Setting up Machine Disallowed Areas in Cura to work with IDEX Mirror / Duplication Modes for Duet
มุมมอง 9543 ปีที่แล้ว
Rather than guesstimating model locations in Cura for mirror or duplication prints, as well as worry about post processing the GCODE to ensure the correct RepRapFirmware tool is selected, I created a true Cura printer profile, included "machine_disallowed_areas" with an IF evaluation based on the number of active extruders to split the build plate in half. forum.duet3d.com/topic/13696/new-large...

AMIDEX PA6-GF30 and EVOLV3D USM Test Print
มุมมอง 6914 ปีที่แล้ว
Testing a dual material print (glass filled nylon, soluble support) on a custom IDEX 3D printer, PA6-GF30 w/a .4mm nozzle, USM w/a .8mm nozzle. Build material at 285°C, support at 235°C. Some notes: Keep the filament dry, especially the USM. Leaving a dry roll out during a 2 hour print showed how quickly the filament can absorb moisture, impacting print quality. If using adaptive layers in Cura...

    Is this running on main cura or a fork?

    This video is an enormous help, thank you friend. I was wondering if you could go a little more into the conditional in your .json file? (i.e. - which variables equate to each tool disallowed areas). Thanks in advance!

    Nice Printer! Is this a Core XY machine running idex? Never seen one like this before. What kind of printer is it?

    • @jaredwebber
      @jaredwebber 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment! It is not a CoreXY - just a cartesian IDEX(although the bed of course moves in the Z direction, rather than the Y direction). The Y axis is driven by a NEMA23 stepper, and the X and U axes are driven by NEMA17 steppers. I've got some details of the printer linked in the video description if you're interested in learning more.

    Very nicely done. I'm contemplating going down this road for mirror printing but also for dual extruding where I can park the unused nozzle over an ooze guard for fast printing. This will mostly be for soluble of easily removable supports.

      Thank you! Mirror and duplication modes are nice, but IMO the real advantage of a separate carriage is indeed parking the tool off to the side. You loose the flexibility of doubling output (when compared to IDEX+mirror/duplication), but another great alternative would be a Jubilee (or e3d) toolchanger - 2+ tools, where you have dedicated tool docks for unused tools. Print head has the capability of grabbing tools on demand.

    I'm pretty new to 3D printing so a lot of this went over my head. I recently got a Flashforge Creator Pro 2 with IDEX so I could do batch printing. In their Flashprint slicer it looks like they have about a 10mm disallowed area running down the middle of the build plate in mirror and duplicate mode. The issue I'm having is that even if I lay my models out right up to this disallowed strip down the middle, when it comes to actually printing the gap I have is over 30mm which is a huge chunk when the build plate is only 200mm wide. I can totally understand this in mirror mode so the extruders don't interfere in the middle but in duplicate mode the extruders remain the same distance apart the whole time. Is this issue more likely due to using Flashprint and if so, what software would you recommend that works well with idex printers? Thanks

      Hey Stuart, thanks for the comment! I just took a quick look at Flashprint.... unsure at how 'locked down' that would be. I do enjoy using Cura, and I think you may be able to find enough information out there from other Flashforge users to get you started with a Creator Pro profile. Regarding IDEX capabilities on the Creator Pro 2 - could you provide me an example mirror and duplication print file? That is mainly for me to take a look at the 'preamble' GCODE, and decipher how the machine preps the two nozzles. In my opinion, slicers seriously lag behind the mechanical capabilities of printers today. Take a look at tool changing printers (Jubilee, e3d), IDEX, or even printers that can print in full color - slicers do not do a good job of working with the advanced capabilities of these machines. Too often the slicers are developed and used by those with experience in single extrusion only.

      Of sorts, yeah! Check out the video description, just added a link to the Duet forums where I also posted the printer. In there is a Google Drive link - I guess technically it falls under CC BY-SA. So far only I have built (and designed) this printer, but you're free to check out my parts document and CAD files and use them how you see fit.

    I am currently fighting with amidex PA6 GF30 myself using a tungsten nozzle. kinda disappointed with the print qualities compared to matterhackers nylonX... will see how it goes. i'm using a 0.6 nozzle on mine. build material at 285 as well. at 270-275 i wasn't getting good layer adhesion.

    • @jaredwebber
      @jaredwebber 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      In addition to the Amidex, I've also used 3DXTech's CarbonX and Owens Corning GF30-PA6. The two glass filled materials (in my experience) turn out very similar when using the same settings, however when using the CarbonX I do tend to tweak various extrusion settings. Are you keeping the filament dry? I won't even attempt a print with any sort of nylon or nylon blend unless I've let it sit in a dehydrator at 80°C for at least 12 hours. I haven't done any non-linear extrusion or pressure advance calibrations on any of the machines I run, but I've found I need to drop my flow down to ~80% or so when printing with nylons at higher temperatures - something I would like to look into more.

    • @mattbackvass
      @mattbackvass 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jaredwebber Yes, I have the printdry system that runs 24/7 at 70C / max temperature to keep everything dry. Before beginning any prints with nylons I usually keep them warmed up in the print dry system for at least 7 days, and i have it completely shrouded going to the extruder via ptfe so there's a very small chance for any moisture to get in. In addition, i have an air conditioner running full time for humidity removal from the printing office, so i'm pretty happy with how dry i am getting things. I have dropped the extrusion multiplier a bit, and things seem to be working better.

      @@jaredwebber thank you for the reply by the way! Other nylons i have printed - taulman 910 (pretty good), taulman pctpe (pretty good), taulman 960CF (garbage), eSun ePA-CF (awesome), matterhackers nylon X ( pretty great ) . I want to try the esun epa-GF next as well

    • @jaredwebber
      @jaredwebber 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hahaha seems like you are definitely keeping the filament dry. I really like Alloy 910 myself - and that is a filament that really shows the impact of moisture absorption on print quality. Another material I have used a little is DuPont's Zytel 3D1000FL (unfilled). I really want to like it (the first prints I did turned out awesome), but for a bunch of reasons I suddenly had a string of really poor prints, and that left a bad taste in my mouth. Its been about 18 months since I really have tried using it seriously.

  • @rysiora
    @rysiora 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello! What nozzle material you used? Brass, titanium, stainless steel possibly would be too soft for glass fiber. The best would be tungsten carbide or hardened carbon steel. What do you think?

    • @jaredwebber
      @jaredwebber 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello! Right now I am using / swapping between P3-D Hercules, E3D NozzleX, and the Slice Engineering Vanadium nozzles, and in the past have used standard E3D hardened steel nozzles. I very much like the first three nozzles I have mentioned as they stand up very well to materials filled with glass fiber, and for the most part have coating that help prevent filament buildup.
