My son is autistic and he has had an IEP since kindergarten. He’s graduating HS this year. IEP stands for “Individual Education Program”. They have to follow the IEP to the letter. Under 504 federal laws. We had to almost sue his elementary school for denying aid.
We have a son with an English teacher that tried this. We wound up having to switch classes. He didn't want to comply. I threw a fit because even though it was way beyond the time it to be able to switch this idiot refused to follow my son's IEP. I was like it is not right. I didn't realize at that time it was illegal. So I gave them the ultimatum switch him or else I will go Special Ed. I had already discussed it with him twice and my son was getting frustrated. My son has functioning autism which he now refuses to believe he has. I am hoping that he will come back around to reality eventually.

Carissa Messina Not the same thing- but my school district used to deny me my use and carrying of an asthma inhaler... that I needed... for my asthma... because I did sports, band, and had a gym class. So I couldn’t breathe. They were very lucky then that I didn’t need it, otherwise they would have lawsuits coming at them. They already do though because they tried to screw over the band directors and they want justice. Schools that deny kids the things they need deserve to crumble. I’m not mad at my teachers, just the school board since they’re a bunch of bullies.

When I was in the 7th grade, the school had "on campus suspension. Basically all day detention. Our punishment for the day was for every letter of the alphabet, find a word in the dictionary & define it. So I put A: the 1st letter of the alphabet B: the 2nd letter of the alphabet. Ect,ect. The teacher was PISSED. I told him to look in the dictionary. I had done exactly was he instructed. The vice principal looked & relunctantly allowed it.

I'd like to think she was really serious about her job in both good and bad, and did it to set an example about sticking to the rules, even if they suck for you right now, lol. I'd LIKE to think that, being the key words.
Because she was in trouble either way. She's allowed to deny one use in the IEP, but no more than that. She denied the computer, so her gimme is gone. Moreover, the child did the assignment on the computer, so she can't just take back the assignment at this point. If she does, then it can be seen as an abuse of a position of power over a special needs child. If she refuses to write, then it's failure to abide by an IEP, which is illegal. Either way, career ending stuff. In the end, she had no other choice. Also, she did get respect for sticking to her guns, so there's that.
I was a substitute teacher for 7 years. My best friends son had an IEP simply for accommodations. He was 2 grades AHEAD of his peers. He has dyspraxia. His handwriting is NOT legible. And that is with special pencils and clips. One of the things that had been an issue was his trauma from being bullied..by both students and teachers...One of the things put in his IEP ( Individual Education Plan) by the Pediatric Psychologist was that his work NOT be returned and asked to do it over. His handwriting was junk but still legible. At this time programs like Dragon speak were fairly new but he also had a speech impediment so there was that too. Anyway. A substitute gets a folder from the teacher, you are supposed to come in at least 10inutes early and familiarize yourself with the syllabus and on any students in class that may have accommodations. Fast forward to snack time and I'm walking down the hallway and my "nephew" is sitting in the hallway, CRYING. This child has NEVER EVER done a thing to be sent out of class. He and his brother are very smart, polite and well rounded children. I walked up and asked him what was wrong. The substitute called him a lazy little story teller and made him REWRITE the paper 3 times. By then he refused. His classmates even told her that he was not doing it on purpose. She sent him out of the room until he decided to not write like a baby. Oh my gosh did I see red. I went directly into the classroom and asked for a word..I also took the folder off the desk with me. I then asked her and she proceeded to try and tell me that my nephew is a lazy little brat that tried handing in his chicken scratch because he didn't feel like slowing down and doing good work. I took out the syllabus a showed her the teacher very clear directions on him and 2 other student with accommodations. She rolled her eyes and said, " Oh for heavens sake! Now they are letting lazy bad behaviours their own paperwork???" These children just lack discipline and direction" I was APOCALYPTIC PISSED. I went straight to the principles office. The sub was fired. And I gave a statement to my best friend. Years later I gave testimony when they sued the school district for the complete and total lack of help while my nephew was bullied to the point that he was WETTING the bed in 7th grade and causing himself to vomit every morning to avoid school. They had to provide him with a tutor until he graduated because he physically cannot step foot in a school. He is so very intelligent and it breaks my heart he missed out on actually going to College. He has done a bunch of online and is now working for a television studio. But he won't even attend his brothers graduation ...
Reminds me of my cousin who had a vision issue. Being bullied for being stupid because he was nearly blind and they would often refuse to let him move to the front of the room. 😢 I’m a permanent sub rn, and I will add one thing. It really ticks me off that in my school system I will to go into a classroom and not receive a full sub binder/folder. This is supposed to be a requirement and more than half of the teachers at the school I’m currently at don’t have proper documents and information for me. Sometimes it’s just really outdated. I get really frustrated because I have had students lie about accommodations and normal class procedure before- but I always try to be reasonable and give accommodations and help. Its worse when I know they need those accommodations. It’s hard to do that when idk what they need. I just wish that regular teachers would understand how important that folder is and how it is a substitute’s lifeline. I have since build a strong relationship with our schools primary special ed teacher and give her a call when needed. I hate interrupting her class but needs must. 🤷🏽♀️

It's based on reports from neurologists, psychiatrists, behavioural specialists, biokineticists, etc. Each child's needs are different. E.g. if a kid is super fidgety in class to the point of tearing off the skin around their nails, we can give them special toys, play dough, etc. to keep their hands busy. They're also allowed special concessions during examination periods. Some kids are just not great at writing, so they're allowed to use a scribe to write for them.
The life of an IT basically boils down to When there is no down time: Why are we paying IT so much? Nothing happened anyway, we should just cut the budget for IT, we are definitely overpaying them for doing nothing. When system failure happened after the budget cut: What are IT doing anyway? We paid them and they failed in their job! They don't deserve what we are paying them!
For the guy with the IEP, I can relate a lot, very similar to my childhood. IEP stands for individualized educational plan, or something to that effect, and I was placed on one from kindergarten to my senior year of high school due to my A.D.D. and emotional impairment, and I often got blamed for stuff other kids did, or fights that other people started, which sucked a lot, and they told me I wasn't allowed to go on field trips because I got too many detentions, man I hated that school. One thing that happened in my highschool was they were doing school wide testing and it was in my IEP that I have a robot read out all the questions to me, despite me being a fast reader and perfectly capable of understanding each word. When I refused to listen to the robot talk, since it actually slowed me down with the disconnect between reading and hearing, the teachers forced me, eventually sending me to detention for not wearing the headphones. Eaton Rapids High is the name of a garbage school that no one should ever send their kids, especially those with an IEP.

I had an IEP in middle and high school because of my ADD and, I found out later, Aspergers and minor autism, and one of my things was that I can listen to music while I do tests because it helps me concentrate and longer time on schoolwork. It was nice but it also really sucks because a lot of the other students were pretty jealous
I have ADD as well! I can listen to music and it helps me. If it is a familiar song, I can just have it in the background because I know what will happen and don't have to worry about it changing and so I don't have to worry about things happening like pencil sounds or people moving around. I have anxiety as well and that probably contributed to me needing to have something familiar and having no surprise sounds. Though I'm still only a freshman in high school

Regarding the IEP-Story: I heard about a disabled girl who should get extra time on any written test. That should compensate her slow writing (her brain works perfectly though). However, one of her teachers ignores that by giving the other students the same time (so again she has the disadvantage) or doesn‘t cover the extra time during break (imagine how much rummaging around, laughing and talking there is without a teacher) or have her take the extra time during next class (imagine writing, say, a Math exam while English class is held). This resulted in worse grades, and the teacher had the audacity to call the LEGALLY REQUIRED COMPENSATION OF A DISADVANTAGE DUE TO A DISABILITY an „preferential treatment“ and that she „should be grateful“. The teacher also questioned her work ethics, because she didn‘t do as many questions on a certain test (the teacher dictates the questions, you have a fee minutes to answer, then on to the next), knowing she isn‘t able to write that fast. It took her guardian several meetings with the principal, threatening lawsuits and more, to have her grades fixed in that particular class. Absurd. By the way, this happened in Germany, in a normal high school.

Naw mate goldfish can remember things up to 6 months+ if it is related to them directly ( place f birth / genitic family etc) . Corporate drones only remember thing for a week or two if it is really important otherwise few minutes
It's amazing to me when I hear of teachers not understanding the importance of IEP, I can't think how sheltered a training or previous school they must have had to not encounter the absolute ball ache it is to get the local authority to sign off on an IEP like it takes forever so many members of staff are involved and you have to have loads of discussion with parents and the pupil. So if a pupil has one it's there for a fucking reason, and these teachers are just like 'nah'.
Honestly teacher in this story had a point. Use of the original IEP the kid suggested completely circumvented the entire punishment. And to her credit she did actually write the lines which probably kept the kid there a while which was the point. Probably could have found a way to make the computer work by increasing the number of lines to compensate for increased typing speed and forbidding copy paste. If I was that teacher, I’d see the kid is trying to be smart and I’d maliciously comply. I’d write the lines as slowly as possible. He knew what he was doing and I’d give it to him cause he’s clever (and it’s the law), but I’d make him regret not trying to write the lines himself.
The small spam getting through one was truly malicious. They complied because they wanted to not because they advised otherwise and they didn’t listen.
IEP: Individualized Education Program. I have been fighting the system almost nonstop since my son left his wonderful elementary school five years ago. Too many administrators and teachers have the weird idea that all they need to do in the IEP is just describe his challenges, and then just say that the goal is for him to learn in the same way as the other kids. Without actually individualizing anything to make that possible for him to do. Want an example? When I wrote to the administrator in charge at his middle school (saying, in part, "his educational program must be individualized. That is what IEP stands for, and that is the mandate of the school system," here's how she responded: "I prefer to keep our programming as closely related to standards as possible to inform best practice." In my blistering reply, I told her, "You may 'prefer' to keep your programming as close as possible to standards but the fact is, that's not the point of an IEP. The point is to individualize the educational program. It's an IEP, not an SEP with tweaks." Argh!
My family is currently in a similar situation, with my younger brother. My province has been making it harder to get a IEP and to be like, recognized as autistic...? He's in grade 2 now, but had a IEP since Kindergarten, and they're bringing up his file again. They took away all the support he was getting, and it was causing him to lash out (throwing rocks, screaming, etc.) and the school continued to deny him support/care, and they didn't even bother to put that much effort into fixing this until he HIT a teacher. The school was furious, and only then decided to get support for him.
How about this for 'proof' of illness: One of my former work colleagues once phoned in sick and, when asked by our boss "How sick are you?", he replied "I'm in bed with my sister." Even the boss got a laugh out of that one. Man, I miss that guy, he was funny as hell...
In high school I had an IEP that I didn't use much, save for one thing. That one things was I didn't have to do homework so long as my test grades were fine. I always aced exams and set the curve for the rest of the class (which got me snark comments about cheating from others who were barely passing). In Junior year chemistry I had a teacher who graded my homework (as a zero as I didn't do it) no matter how many times I brought up my education plan. Her reasoning, I never paid attention in class, so how was I learning? One day, after almost a full week of valence elections (they're not hard people, it's basically LEGOs!) I was bored out of my gourd, so I skip ahead in the text book to the full electron shells. I work out where every electron should be for Uranium (largest stable element) and show it to her. Me: Mrs Teacher, is this right? Teacher: (pause) Yes. No one look at Rosie, it will just confuse you more, just accept that she's right. After that no one made snark comments about cheating, and my homework was never graded as a zero again.

I thought it was ironically funny that the same teacher who was in my IEP meeting and suggested or backed the majority of aids ended up being the one who wouldn’t let me use them. I had him before the IEP and his brother, they were some of the best teachers I had but he did make it more difficult just to get my work after the IEP.
I had an IEP after starting highschool because i'd just gotten the OK from my doctors after being cured of cancer. If i remember correctly, one of the accommodations i was given was that, i had to option to leave class a few minutes before to bell in order to gather my things from my locker and get to my classes without much hassle or getting stuck in a clogged up hallway, or something to that effect, i don't really remember why. But i know i never used it because i felt and still feel like it wasn't necessary. Just because i'm a cancer survivor doesn't mean i should get special treatment.
It's not about special treatment. Students are all individuals, and sometimes they have individual needs. I didn't have an IEP but I got extra time on standardized tests, which I don't recall ever using once, but just knowing it was available made me feel more confident and secure while taking the tests. The majority of IEPs are given for emotional/behavioral/psychological issues that many students have, though there are also obviously medical accommodations such as yours. Some students just need extra help sometimes, and that's totally OK.
@@SRosenberg203 it felt like special treatment to a 15 year old because of what i'd gone through and i didn't understand then the reason why IEP's existed. My brother is autistic, and has an IEP as well, in highschool, amd i now understand the reason for IEPs. To give sudents with learning, social, physical or developmental disorders an advantage in schools and to help them be on similar levels to their peers. The point is, i was young and dumb at the time and didn't understand shit.

6:27 Well, that's the thing about IT: most of the time if you're doing your job right, the client isn't going to notice anything different...which clearly leads to some thinking you're doing nothing. Best (not necessarily most ethical) way to fix that is by showing them in no uncertain terms what you are helping with.
Hi. Long time lurker, first time commenter. As an ESE (Exceptional Student Education) Case Manager (think teacher that does paperwork), I write IEPs (Individual Education Plan) constantly. Teachers don't get to pick what IEP Accommodations (i.e. extended time, technological aids, note taking assistance, copy of teacher notes, etc.), they follow. What is written, is what is followed. Period. There is NO picking and choosing. To that point, most teachers are flexible and know the score, but we had one DICK that when asked if they would allow a student to use a highlighter in class, literally said "that's not in their IEP"! So.... by the next day a call was made to mom, the IEP was amended, and a new copy of the student's accommodations were ready for him to sign for and acknowledge.
My friend Emily has dysgraphia. (like dyslexia, but for writing. Can’t write like at all). In elementary she had a laptop, since she can type, specifically for that. The amount of teachers that bullied her, refused accommodations, and attempted to destroy her property is insane, especially in elementary! By the time we met in HS none of the teachers really cared, all us students were doing our work on computers anyways. She had to start school a year late because she was too small and they worried the other kids would accidentally kill her! She was an extreme pre-me, like survival rate less than 1%, and by 5 years old I don’t think she had reached two feet tall! Ik plenty of disabilities aren’t visible (mine included!) but really- These teachers really looked at Miss Thumbelina and went “nahhh there’s no way you’re disabled, you don’t need that laptop” like ma’am my hands do not work! Combine that with the student bullies, and she’s missing large chunks of memory from elementary. Ableism is shit. Stand up for your disabled and neurodivergent classmates, kids! Cuz your teachers fucking won’t. At least most of them. FYI she is about to graduate with a bachelors and is going to stay in school to become a professor herself in nutrition. She’s the best cook I’ve ever met (she was going to school for that first and changed her mind, so she is a professionally trained chef!!!) loves classic books and musicals, and often sings quietly to her dog, who is almost as big as her, and her adorable baby neice, who is already taller lol. One of her school bullies was in the local paper for attempting to kill someone with a bat, and she is now locked up. All’s well that ends well, I suppose…
I was in special education until high school. It was HORRIBLE. I think I had maybe two or three good teachers, the rest berated me and screamed at me when I didn’t do something right. Me and the other students were treated like shit and I was especially targeted because I questioned them and stood up for myself.
That suck. I was I special Ed, and I still am (even though I'm an A/B student) but all of my special Ed teachers were pretty amazing except for one who would I think yell at me for reading something aloud wrong. I think this is why I have anxiety about reading aloud.
I once had a teacher spray me in the face with water twice after an argument. We had a meeting with my parents, the principal, my counselor, and her boss. She was not fired. She never addressed me in class again.
Honestly, with the IEP thing...I'm not gonna say the teacher was in the right in any way for denying computer use, but I think Copy-Paste was admittedly toeing the line of what should be acceptable in that context IMO.
Re: the topic at 6:28 - ALWAYS document any instruction you are given by supervision (including the department Lead), noting the date and time the instruction was given and note the date and time the job was completed. I worked for a health insurance company and part of my job was to call members who appeared on a 'trigger list' to ensure they were receiving appropriate care. My supervisor was a Karen (she even had the haircut!) who went on a rant when I set up transportation to an appointment 120 miles from our member's home for a five-year-old child who suddenly went selectively mute and and was set to see a renowned expert in the field. The doctor was going to be in our state for one day and the drive would take them through a major contruction zone. Since the dad cried during the call, I decided they had no business driving. This was escalated to our Medical Direcor, because of cost, who read my notes and agreed it was a potential liability. If I hadn't had those notes...
11:20 - The CYOA rule is pretty important, but it only ranks no 2. The no 1 rule (told to me by my father, the day started my first job. "As the most junior guy, you'll be sent out for sandwiches, cigarettes [this was a while ago] etc. When this happens, BE SURE TO GET THE MONEY FIRST. It's astonishing how many high-powered executives 'Don't have any change right now,' and will then suffer a memory loss about paying you later."

15:06 IEP stands for individual education plan. And many schools like to fight you on following IEP's. It's a pain in the neck to get them to comply. I got a university professor fired after he denied me in writing and verbally. He didn't have tenure.
I work as a developer and have worked as IT support in the past. I usually get customers to desist from stupid requests by telling them the consequences in a way that they understand. For the spam filter my response would be: "You will be getting 20+ spam e-mails every single hour, are you sure this is what you want?"
In the second and third one when they said that they wanted the spam filter back they should have put it for everything. Not just spam everything and see how mad they get!
That assessment on how IT works is 100% accurate, we don't have a ton of users so we have storage set up to make automatic images of the users computer every Friday, any time something is messed up we ask if it worked last week, if it did we just install their image from a week ago and no one's the wiser

As someone with special needs I can relate to the last couple of stories... I went to a school where THE BUS and CROSSING GAURDS were nonexistent (parents HAD to drop off AND pick up their kids EVERY SINGLE DAY and the PRINCIPAL was the one directing traffic) and one where it was a luxury you had to fight tooth and claw for and you’d only be able to get it if you were lucky and in special ed! (California pre 2007 If you’re wondering)
I remember in Year 9 (UK, this was October 2019), I was at a Parents' Evening, and my Computer Science teacher is, let me be honest, a bit dyslexic. And so eventually the topic comes onto my work. Sir says that it is good work, but I need to make my handwriting better. And, quick side note: I have had... OK, have, very bad handwriting. It's like writing in English and the reader (who is English) thinks it's Chinese. Even I can't read it sometimes. So, Sir says that if I want some good Computer Science grades, I will need to improve my writing. But, he says the words I was wanting to hear: "but, for tests, you can do them on the computer". As far as I know, kids over in the UK can't get an IEP or an equivalent unless they have a SEN need. But I kinda need the help, so when I need to do my actual GCSEs, the exam board (OCR) *might* allow the use of a computer if my exam would be illegible if handwritten. And, Sir has stuck to that! After the UK lockdown, we had a test to see how we were doing. He actually put the test on the computer and asked me to do it on there. And... I am a fast typer (140-150 WPM depending on various factors), so I did the test in around 10 minutes. We had 60 minutes to do it.

Yes! CYA is important. Whenever I talk to a boss I always send a follow up email confirming what we talked about, lol. Something like, " to be clear, blah blah " or "just to confirm, etc. etc. " which forces them to reply back to me. I never get screwed over because I can always bring the receipts.
In IT, if you do your job correctly, the company can't figure out why they're paying you because nothing "fails". Then all hell breaks lose once you're not around. So that's why it's useful to make sure they see you as useful

I had an IEP during elementary and middle school. Saw it briefly, was vaguely told that it was supposed to help me. Never told how to use it or what accommodations i had access to. I now feel like my education was needlessly made more difficult for me.
As for lines... my IT teacher in the 90’s gave out 20 lines if anyone played around in class. My being a smartarse geek, I asked if we could use Excel. Then he said “ok, but use excel, you must write 65536 lines. In the same file.” Later I find out that excel at that time stopped at 65535 lines.... Well played sir. Well played. Rest in peace.
I once worked in an organisation with a few hundred computers, about thirty of which were in a particular tutoring room which was mainly booked to one tutor. Originally I had named the computers after the room number, followed by a computer number starting at "01" next to the door and working counter-clockwise around the room. This was standard for all the tutoring rooms in the building. The tutor, not asking about or checking my numbering scheme, later drew up a room layout with the count starting next to his computer and going clockwise. He was mad at me for not predicting his intended room plan. When the computers in his room were due for replacing, I took care to number them in accordance with the room plan which was pinned on the wall above his desk. Nope, not good enough! He had drawn up another room plan and was quite annoyed when I told him that the task of renaming the computers AGAIN would have to wait twenty six weeks until the next vacation period when I wasn't taking time off. The computers were perfectly usable the whole time.
IT has a thing called PICNIC. It's short for, "Problem In Chair, Not In Computer". Some even have a simple question list like "Did you try turning the computer off and on again?","Did you turn your monitor on?" and others like that.
since you brought it up ... there is the weird thing where if a service is faulty and the customer gets quick responsive help with the order he will be happier by the end than he would have been getting a perfect service in the first place.

My son is autistic and he has had an IEP since kindergarten. He’s graduating HS this year. IEP stands for “Individual Education Program”. They have to follow the IEP to the letter. Under 504 federal laws. We had to almost sue his elementary school for denying aid.
We have a son with an English teacher that tried this. We wound up having to switch classes. He didn't want to comply. I threw a fit because even though it was way beyond the time it to be able to switch this idiot refused to follow my son's IEP. I was like it is not right. I didn't realize at that time it was illegal. So I gave them the ultimatum switch him or else I will go Special Ed. I had already discussed it with him twice and my son was getting frustrated. My son has functioning autism which he now refuses to believe he has. I am hoping that he will come back around to reality eventually.

Carissa Messina Not the same thing- but my school district used to deny me my use and carrying of an asthma inhaler... that I needed... for my asthma... because I did sports, band, and had a gym class. So I couldn’t breathe. They were very lucky then that I didn’t need it, otherwise they would have lawsuits coming at them. They already do though because they tried to screw over the band directors and they want justice. Schools that deny kids the things they need deserve to crumble. I’m not mad at my teachers, just the school board since they’re a bunch of bullies.

When I was in the 7th grade, the school had "on campus suspension. Basically all day detention. Our punishment for the day was for every letter of the alphabet, find a word in the dictionary & define it. So I put
A: the 1st letter of the alphabet
B: the 2nd letter of the alphabet.
Ect,ect. The teacher was PISSED. I told him to look in the dictionary. I had done exactly was he instructed. The vice principal looked & relunctantly allowed it.
On campus suspension sounds a lot better than hub, or as its called now, focus. Its all day isolation in school. You aren't even allowed to get lunch

I'd like to think she was really serious about her job in both good and bad, and did it to set an example about sticking to the rules, even if they suck for you right now, lol. I'd LIKE to think that, being the key words.
She had to be there one way or another.....she wasted the students time. She can't go home either way.
Because she was in trouble either way. She's allowed to deny one use in the IEP, but no more than that. She denied the computer, so her gimme is gone. Moreover, the child did the assignment on the computer, so she can't just take back the assignment at this point. If she does, then it can be seen as an abuse of a position of power over a special needs child. If she refuses to write, then it's failure to abide by an IEP, which is illegal. Either way, career ending stuff.
In the end, she had no other choice. Also, she did get respect for sticking to her guns, so there's that.
I was a substitute teacher for 7 years. My best friends son had an IEP simply for accommodations. He was 2 grades AHEAD of his peers. He has dyspraxia. His handwriting is NOT legible. And that is with special pencils and clips. One of the things that had been an issue was his trauma from being bullied..by both students and teachers...One of the things put in his IEP ( Individual Education Plan) by the Pediatric Psychologist was that his work NOT be returned and asked to do it over. His handwriting was junk but still legible. At this time programs like Dragon speak were fairly new but he also had a speech impediment so there was that too. Anyway. A substitute gets a folder from the teacher, you are supposed to come in at least 10inutes early and familiarize yourself with the syllabus and on any students in class that may have accommodations. Fast forward to snack time and I'm walking down the hallway and my "nephew" is sitting in the hallway, CRYING. This child has NEVER EVER done a thing to be sent out of class. He and his brother are very smart, polite and well rounded children. I walked up and asked him what was wrong. The substitute called him a lazy little story teller and made him REWRITE the paper 3 times. By then he refused. His classmates even told her that he was not doing it on purpose. She sent him out of the room until he decided to not write like a baby. Oh my gosh did I see red. I went directly into the classroom and asked for a word..I also took the folder off the desk with me. I then asked her and she proceeded to try and tell me that my nephew is a lazy little brat that tried handing in his chicken scratch because he didn't feel like slowing down and doing good work. I took out the syllabus a showed her the teacher very clear directions on him and 2 other student with accommodations. She rolled her eyes and said, " Oh for heavens sake! Now they are letting lazy bad behaviours their own paperwork???" These children just lack discipline and direction" I was APOCALYPTIC PISSED. I went straight to the principles office. The sub was fired. And I gave a statement to my best friend. Years later I gave testimony when they sued the school district for the complete and total lack of help while my nephew was bullied to the point that he was WETTING the bed in 7th grade and causing himself to vomit every morning to avoid school. They had to provide him with a tutor until he graduated because he physically cannot step foot in a school. He is so very intelligent and it breaks my heart he missed out on actually going to College. He has done a bunch of online and is now working for a television studio. But he won't even attend his brothers graduation ...

Reminds me of my cousin who had a vision issue. Being bullied for being stupid because he was nearly blind and they would often refuse to let him move to the front of the room. 😢 I’m a permanent sub rn, and I will add one thing. It really ticks me off that in my school system I will to go into a classroom and not receive a full sub binder/folder. This is supposed to be a requirement and more than half of the teachers at the school I’m currently at don’t have proper documents and information for me. Sometimes it’s just really outdated. I get really frustrated because I have had students lie about accommodations and normal class procedure before- but I always try to be reasonable and give accommodations and help. Its worse when I know they need those accommodations. It’s hard to do that when idk what they need. I just wish that regular teachers would understand how important that folder is and how it is a substitute’s lifeline. I have since build a strong relationship with our schools primary special ed teacher and give her a call when needed. I hate interrupting her class but needs must. 🤷🏽♀️

It's based on reports from neurologists, psychiatrists, behavioural specialists, biokineticists, etc. Each child's needs are different. E.g. if a kid is super fidgety in class to the point of tearing off the skin around their nails, we can give them special toys, play dough, etc. to keep their hands busy. They're also allowed special concessions during examination periods. Some kids are just not great at writing, so they're allowed to use a scribe to write for them.

For the guy with the IEP, I can relate a lot, very similar to my childhood. IEP stands for individualized educational plan, or something to that effect, and I was placed on one from kindergarten to my senior year of high school due to my A.D.D. and emotional impairment, and I often got blamed for stuff other kids did, or fights that other people started, which sucked a lot, and they told me I wasn't allowed to go on field trips because I got too many detentions, man I hated that school. One thing that happened in my highschool was they were doing school wide testing and it was in my IEP that I have a robot read out all the questions to me, despite me being a fast reader and perfectly capable of understanding each word. When I refused to listen to the robot talk, since it actually slowed me down with the disconnect between reading and hearing, the teachers forced me, eventually sending me to detention for not wearing the headphones. Eaton Rapids High is the name of a garbage school that no one should ever send their kids, especially those with an IEP.

I had an IEP in middle and high school because of my ADD and, I found out later, Aspergers and minor autism, and one of my things was that I can listen to music while I do tests because it helps me concentrate and longer time on schoolwork. It was nice but it also really sucks because a lot of the other students were pretty jealous
I always thought things like this help to easily identify shitty people, and you shouldn't care what they say or how they feel
I have ADD as well! I can listen to music and it helps me. If it is a familiar song, I can just have it in the background because I know what will happen and don't have to worry about it changing and so I don't have to worry about things happening like pencil sounds or people moving around. I have anxiety as well and that probably contributed to me needing to have something familiar and having no surprise sounds. Though I'm still only a freshman in high school

Regarding the IEP-Story: I heard about a disabled girl who should get extra time on any written test. That should compensate her slow writing (her brain works perfectly though). However, one of her teachers ignores that by giving the other students the same time (so again she has the disadvantage) or doesn‘t cover the extra time during break (imagine how much rummaging around, laughing and talking there is without a teacher) or have her take the extra time during next class (imagine writing, say, a Math exam while English class is held). This resulted in worse grades, and the teacher had the audacity to call the LEGALLY REQUIRED COMPENSATION OF A DISADVANTAGE DUE TO A DISABILITY an „preferential treatment“ and that she „should be grateful“. The teacher also questioned her work ethics, because she didn‘t do as many questions on a certain test (the teacher dictates the questions, you have a fee minutes to answer, then on to the next), knowing she isn‘t able to write that fast. It took her guardian several meetings with the principal, threatening lawsuits and more, to have her grades fixed in that particular class. Absurd. By the way, this happened in Germany, in a normal high school.

It's amazing to me when I hear of teachers not understanding the importance of IEP, I can't think how sheltered a training or previous school they must have had to not encounter the absolute ball ache it is to get the local authority to sign off on an IEP like it takes forever so many members of staff are involved and you have to have loads of discussion with parents and the pupil. So if a pupil has one it's there for a fucking reason, and these teachers are just like 'nah'.
Honestly teacher in this story had a point. Use of the original IEP the kid suggested completely circumvented the entire punishment. And to her credit she did actually write the lines which probably kept the kid there a while which was the point. Probably could have found a way to make the computer work by increasing the number of lines to compensate for increased typing speed and forbidding copy paste.
If I was that teacher, I’d see the kid is trying to be smart and I’d maliciously comply. I’d write the lines as slowly as possible. He knew what he was doing and I’d give it to him cause he’s clever (and it’s the law), but I’d make him regret not trying to write the lines himself.

IEP: Individualized Education Program. I have been fighting the system almost nonstop since my son left his wonderful elementary school five years ago. Too many administrators and teachers have the weird idea that all they need to do in the IEP is just describe his challenges, and then just say that the goal is for him to learn in the same way as the other kids. Without actually individualizing anything to make that possible for him to do.
Want an example? When I wrote to the administrator in charge at his middle school (saying, in part, "his educational program must be individualized. That is what IEP stands for, and that is the mandate of the school system," here's how she responded:
"I prefer to keep our programming as closely related to standards as possible to inform best practice."
In my blistering reply, I told her, "You may 'prefer' to keep your programming as close as possible to standards but the fact is, that's not
the point of an IEP. The point is to individualize the educational program. It's an IEP, not an SEP with tweaks."

My family is currently in a similar situation, with my younger brother. My province has been making it harder to get a IEP and to be like, recognized as autistic...? He's in grade 2 now, but had a IEP since Kindergarten, and they're bringing up his file again. They took away all the support he was getting, and it was causing him to lash out (throwing rocks, screaming, etc.) and the school continued to deny him support/care, and they didn't even bother to put that much effort into fixing this until he HIT a teacher. The school was furious, and only then decided to get support for him.
How about this for 'proof' of illness:
One of my former work colleagues once phoned in sick and, when asked by our boss "How sick are you?", he replied "I'm in bed with my sister."
Even the boss got a laugh out of that one.

In high school I had an IEP that I didn't use much, save for one thing. That one things was I didn't have to do homework so long as my test grades were fine. I always aced exams and set the curve for the rest of the class (which got me snark comments about cheating from others who were barely passing). In Junior year chemistry I had a teacher who graded my homework (as a zero as I didn't do it) no matter how many times I brought up my education plan. Her reasoning, I never paid attention in class, so how was I learning? One day, after almost a full week of valence elections (they're not hard people, it's basically LEGOs!) I was bored out of my gourd, so I skip ahead in the text book to the full electron shells. I work out where every electron should be for Uranium (largest stable element) and show it to her.
Me: Mrs Teacher, is this right?
Teacher: (pause) Yes. No one look at Rosie, it will just confuse you more, just accept that she's right.
After that no one made snark comments about cheating, and my homework was never graded as a zero again.

I thought it was ironically funny that the same teacher who was in my IEP meeting and suggested or backed the majority of aids ended up being the one who wouldn’t let me use them. I had him before the IEP and his brother, they were some of the best teachers I had but he did make it more difficult just to get my work after the IEP.

I had an IEP after starting highschool because i'd just gotten the OK from my doctors after being cured of cancer. If i remember correctly, one of the accommodations i was given was that, i had to option to leave class a few minutes before to bell in order to gather my things from my locker and get to my classes without much hassle or getting stuck in a clogged up hallway, or something to that effect, i don't really remember why. But i know i never used it because i felt and still feel like it wasn't necessary. Just because i'm a cancer survivor doesn't mean i should get special treatment.
It's not about special treatment. Students are all individuals, and sometimes they have individual needs. I didn't have an IEP but I got extra time on standardized tests, which I don't recall ever using once, but just knowing it was available made me feel more confident and secure while taking the tests. The majority of IEPs are given for emotional/behavioral/psychological issues that many students have, though there are also obviously medical accommodations such as yours. Some students just need extra help sometimes, and that's totally OK.

My brother is autistic, and has an IEP as well, in highschool, amd i now understand the reason for IEPs. To give sudents with learning, social, physical or developmental disorders an advantage in schools and to help them be on similar levels to their peers. The point is, i was young and dumb at the time and didn't understand shit.

6:27 Well, that's the thing about IT: most of the time if you're doing your job right, the client isn't going to notice anything different...which clearly leads to some thinking you're doing nothing. Best (not necessarily most ethical) way to fix that is by showing them in no uncertain terms what you are helping with.

Hi. Long time lurker, first time commenter. As an ESE (Exceptional Student Education) Case Manager (think teacher that does paperwork), I write IEPs (Individual Education Plan) constantly. Teachers don't get to pick what IEP Accommodations (i.e. extended time, technological aids, note taking assistance, copy of teacher notes, etc.), they follow. What is written, is what is followed. Period. There is NO picking and choosing. To that point, most teachers are flexible and know the score, but we had one DICK that when asked if they would allow a student to use a highlighter in class, literally said "that's not in their IEP"! So.... by the next day a call was made to mom, the IEP was amended, and a new copy of the student's accommodations were ready for him to sign for and acknowledge.

My friend Emily has dysgraphia. (like dyslexia, but for writing. Can’t write like at all). In elementary she had a laptop, since she can type, specifically for that. The amount of teachers that bullied her, refused accommodations, and attempted to destroy her property is insane, especially in elementary! By the time we met in HS none of the teachers really cared, all us students were doing our work on computers anyways. She had to start school a year late because she was too small and they worried the other kids would accidentally kill her! She was an extreme pre-me, like survival rate less than 1%, and by 5 years old I don’t think she had reached two feet tall! Ik plenty of disabilities aren’t visible (mine included!) but really- These teachers really looked at Miss Thumbelina and went “nahhh there’s no way you’re disabled, you don’t need that laptop” like ma’am my hands do not work! Combine that with the student bullies, and she’s missing large chunks of memory from elementary. Ableism is shit. Stand up for your disabled and neurodivergent classmates, kids! Cuz your teachers fucking won’t. At least most of them.
FYI she is about to graduate with a bachelors and is going to stay in school to become a professor herself in nutrition. She’s the best cook I’ve ever met (she was going to school for that first and changed her mind, so she is a professionally trained chef!!!) loves classic books and musicals, and often sings quietly to her dog, who is almost as big as her, and her adorable baby neice, who is already taller lol. One of her school bullies was in the local paper for attempting to kill someone with a bat, and she is now locked up. All’s well that ends well, I suppose…

I was in special education until high school. It was HORRIBLE. I think I had maybe two or three good teachers, the rest berated me and screamed at me when I didn’t do something right. Me and the other students were treated like shit and I was especially targeted because I questioned them and stood up for myself.
That suck. I was I special Ed, and I still am (even though I'm an A/B student) but all of my special Ed teachers were pretty amazing except for one who would I think yell at me for reading something aloud wrong. I think this is why I have anxiety about reading aloud.
I once had a teacher spray me in the face with water twice after an argument. We had a meeting with my parents, the principal, my counselor, and her boss. She was not fired. She never addressed me in class again.

Re: the topic at 6:28 - ALWAYS document any instruction you are given by supervision (including the department Lead), noting the date and time the instruction was given and note the date and time the job was completed. I worked for a health insurance company and part of my job was to call members who appeared on a 'trigger list' to ensure they were receiving appropriate care. My supervisor was a Karen (she even had the haircut!) who went on a rant when I set up transportation to an appointment 120 miles from our member's home for a five-year-old child who suddenly went selectively mute and and was set to see a renowned expert in the field. The doctor was going to be in our state for one day and the drive would take them through a major contruction zone. Since the dad cried during the call, I decided they had no business driving. This was escalated to our Medical Direcor, because of cost, who read my notes and agreed it was a potential liability. If I hadn't had those notes...

15:06 IEP stands for individual education plan. And many schools like to fight you on following IEP's. It's a pain in the neck to get them to comply.

I work as a developer and have worked as IT support in the past.
I usually get customers to desist from stupid requests by telling them the consequences in a way that they understand.
For the spam filter my response would be: "You will be getting 20+ spam e-mails every single hour, are you sure this is what you want?"
In the second and third one when they said that they wanted the spam filter back they should have put it for everything. Not just spam everything and see how mad they get!
That assessment on how IT works is 100% accurate, we don't have a ton of users so we have storage set up to make automatic images of the users computer every Friday, any time something is messed up we ask if it worked last week, if it did we just install their image from a week ago and no one's the wiser

For anyone wondering, IEP stands for Individualized Education Plan. It's also illegal for a school not to follow an IEP if a student has one, but unfortunately, it can be extremely difficult to actually get anything done about it. Court cases relating to IEP noncompliance are almost unheard of, despite the fact that it happens nearly every day

For those wondering, and IEP is an individualized education plan. It’s an education plan suited for each person who needs the extra assistance. I had one too, so I completely understand the difficulty.

As someone with special needs I can relate to the last couple of stories... I went to a school where THE BUS and CROSSING GAURDS were nonexistent (parents HAD to drop off AND pick up their kids EVERY SINGLE DAY and the PRINCIPAL was the one directing traffic) and one where it was a luxury you had to fight tooth and claw for and you’d only be able to get it if you were lucky and in special ed! (California pre 2007 If you’re wondering)

I remember in Year 9 (UK, this was October 2019), I was at a Parents' Evening, and my Computer Science teacher is, let me be honest, a bit dyslexic. And so eventually the topic comes onto my work. Sir says that it is good work, but I need to make my handwriting better. And, quick side note: I have had... OK, have, very bad handwriting. It's like writing in English and the reader (who is English) thinks it's Chinese. Even I can't read it sometimes. So, Sir says that if I want some good Computer Science grades, I will need to improve my writing. But, he says the words I was wanting to hear: "but, for tests, you can do them on the computer".
As far as I know, kids over in the UK can't get an IEP or an equivalent unless they have a SEN need. But I kinda need the help, so when I need to do my actual GCSEs, the exam board (OCR) *might* allow the use of a computer if my exam would be illegible if handwritten.
And, Sir has stuck to that! After the UK lockdown, we had a test to see how we were doing. He actually put the test on the computer and asked me to do it on there. And... I am a fast typer (140-150 WPM depending on various factors), so I did the test in around 10 minutes. We had 60 minutes to do it.

Yes! CYA is important. Whenever I talk to a boss I always send a follow up email confirming what we talked about, lol. Something like, " to be clear, blah blah " or "just to confirm, etc. etc. " which forces them to reply back to me. I never get screwed over because I can always bring the receipts.

Those tricky OSI Layer 8 problems are the biggest mystery of the IT-sector.
In IT, if you do your job correctly, the company can't figure out why they're paying you because nothing "fails". Then all hell breaks lose once you're not around. So that's why it's useful to make sure they see you as useful

I had an IEP during elementary and middle school. Saw it briefly, was vaguely told that it was supposed to help me. Never told how to use it or what accommodations i had access to. I now feel like my education was needlessly made more difficult for me.
As for lines... my IT teacher in the 90’s gave out 20 lines if anyone played around in class. My being a smartarse geek, I asked if we could use Excel. Then he said “ok, but use excel, you must write 65536 lines. In the same file.”
Later I find out that excel at that time stopped at 65535 lines.... Well played sir. Well played. Rest in peace.

I once worked in an organisation with a few hundred computers, about thirty of which were in a particular tutoring room which was mainly booked to one tutor.
Originally I had named the computers after the room number, followed by a computer number starting at "01" next to the door and working counter-clockwise around the room. This was standard for all the tutoring rooms in the building.
The tutor, not asking about or checking my numbering scheme, later drew up a room layout with the count starting next to his computer and going clockwise. He was mad at me for not predicting his intended room plan.
When the computers in his room were due for replacing, I took care to number them in accordance with the room plan which was pinned on the wall above his desk.
Nope, not good enough! He had drawn up another room plan and was quite annoyed when I told him that the task of renaming the computers AGAIN would have to wait twenty six weeks until the next vacation period when I wasn't taking time off.
The computers were perfectly usable the whole time.
IT has a thing called PICNIC. It's short for, "Problem In Chair, Not In Computer". Some even have a simple question list like "Did you try turning the computer off and on again?","Did you turn your monitor on?" and others like that.
since you brought it up ... there is the weird thing where if a service is faulty and the customer gets quick responsive help with the order he will be happier by the end than he would have been getting a perfect service in the first place.
The first story gives me a idea if my manager ever require that I will do that. lol!!
No one who asks someone to "Prove they're ill" has really thought of the cheapest and most convenient ways to inform someone they're ill, eh?
