1. What is the max recommended warp length when using warping beam? 2. What keeps warp ends from jumping out of the coil, for example when tension is loosened? 3. What keeps warping bar and apron bar from warping under high tension? Thank you.
Hi Cate, I would say you don’t want to put more than 5 yards on…but this depends on the fabric being woven. A wider sett, with say 5 epi and heavy weft yarn will fill more space on the cloth beam than a warp sett of 12 and a cloth woven with fine yarns. I would suggest that the weaver start with 2-3 yards. I loosen the tension just slightly so the threads jumping out of the coils hasn’t been a problem. I have used blue painters’ tape over the coils during warping and I don’t see any reason why you couldn’t use this during weaving if the warp yarns are coming out of the coils. If your warping or apron bar bend during warping and weaving, it is because you have a narrow warp. Removing the outside apron cords will take care of this problem. The bar bends because some of the bar is under tension and other parts aren’t. Removing the outside apron cords takes care of this problem because now those parts of the bar aren’t under tension.
