Watching this in 2024 and I’m 65. I’ve never not known the Doobie brothers. I guess it’s my generation. My favorite is Michael McDonald. Anytime I hear his voice. I just get happy. He is such a talent. I love steely Dan I love Boz Scaggs I love.. What a talent he just added so much to everything he touched.
The Doobie Brothers have an amazing collection of music, resulting in great success in both iterations of their sound, with and w/o Michael. I love love the commercial play of both sounds...then I took a deeper dive into the "First 5" of the DB's, where I discovered non commercial masterpieces. On the lp Stampede, please take a moment to listen to "I Cheat The Hangman", it blew me away. The existing band with Patrick, Tom, John and Michael are must see and still going strong (I saw them on 10/5 at Mohegan Sun). Excellent performance!
Me too, but I'm equally bullish on the Michael McDonald years. MM was more r&b influenced. Both Johnson and MM were crazy good. So, for me there's no either or.
Hi, why don't I remember your name? In 79 I was broadcast producer and put the hour together in PP3 and put the show on the air live with Roger Goodman directing. The great logo seen here Roger and I had done. Maybe this was like 81? I left and Rifkinson was directing.
Hi Dan…. I was your PA for one of your first pieces on smoking! I remember you very well.It was 7/3/1980 the piece aired. You, Dennis Sullivan and someone else was the producers of the show. Correct? We did that shoot on top of the US postal building across the street from Madison Square Garden with a magician. I believe we also went to Lubbock Texas for that piece together @@dancooper
My #1 EVER American Band (I'm English) but as much as I admire and respect Michael McDonald, that was not The Doobies I was crazy about, Jesus is Just Alright / Long Train Running / Blackwater / Listen to the Music.... Never better than then!! But so also say they were unknown and most people knew their music??? Whhaaat?? What Planet are these people from! When I first heard Blackwater on the radio, I was like a bolt of lightning down to buy the Album asking for The Doobie Brothers!! Have every LP, CD, DVD, Blu-Ray ever released, and Long Train Running is in my top 5 songs of all time!!
Personally I thought the first album was FANTASTIC! It might not have sold but it is a great combination of acoustic and electric guitar and vocals. By far my favorite band until McDonald. I give them credit for picking him and shooting to the top with him, but the music was really different. But I put on Toulouse Street or Stampede and I am treated to a wide variety of song style all done perfectly.
All time favorite band. How come you can get a copy of every Doobie recording except Sibling Rivalry? people gotta love again 45th floor Rocking Horse Ordinary Man I may never hear those songs again.
No footage of Jeff Skunk Baxter , unfortunately- but very cool to see Ted Templeman : that mysterious, yet lucky charm of a name I used to ALWAYS see on nearly every Warner Bros album or cassette I would listen to. And to think , this was filmed at the time he was just starting with Van Halen 🎉🎉🎉
13:54-14:52 where's the rest of this very very very rare footage. They got Chet in the studio singing? We need to see more Doobie archives. Thank you though for the post.
i had a friend who got caught illegally recording a doobie brothers concert. he was nice guy always wore a hat and for a overweight guy he could really dance 😂

Ted Templeman was a genius . Very Underrated producer. He produced some Awesome albums I still listen to this day in 2024.
1979-1980 was an Awesome time for music. Great times

I loved the band with Johnston. The rock & roll sound.

👍✌️🎶

Thank you Tom, Pat, Michael, John, Tiran, Jeff, John, Chet, Mike, Keith, Cornelius, Bobby. Legends
what were once vices are now bad habits is one of my all time favorite albums ever
Those in-studio harmonies on "Real Love" were flawless.
Today's artists rely on tech to get perfect vocals on their records.
Sure was. Never even seen that footage before, I just know there's more
Pure talent..Made their mark, one of the greatest!
Everybody not living in a cave new about the Doobies in 79.I saw them in 78 and it was sold out.

Used copies of Sibling Rivalry are as low as $2.00 on eBay or Discogs.
Tom Johnston looks almost exactly the same today.
He absolutely does, and his voice and guitar(s) workmanship was amazing! Just saw the band last weekend at Mohegan Sun. They rock!!
Robert Johnston....the catalyst for the Doobies spark and inception
Tom Johnston

Sure glad Tom Johnston came back!

Such a tragedy the band broke up and disappeared into obscurity back in the 70's. They had potential.
Yes that is sarcasm.
It’s funny how Tom Johnston blames everything but alcohol on his ulcer. He’s clearly seen drinking in videos.
It was important for you to make that comment? Booze, drugs and a hard life. He made it through where others didn’t.
Michael McDonald killed their lovely Southern Rock vibe.
i had a friend who got caught illegally recording a doobie brothers concert. he was nice guy always wore a hat and for a overweight guy he could really dance 😂
Wow the recording of the vocal tracks on Real Love. Please don't take this down

michael Mcdonald was a newcomer.lol.
When Michael McDonald joined the Doobies I quit listening to them because their music changed to much.
Loved the Doobie Brothers for fifty years. Are at their best when Tom Johnston is there. Saw them without him and it wasn't as good. Just saying.
For me….the only Doobies are the original. Nothing after the fifth album for me.
remember when that big-ass tape recorder fell out of Hugh Downs' trench coat?
not a huge fan of the Michael McDonald era, still a great band when you take it all in to account.

What’s so funny is Chet never sang. I’m guessing he was just lip syncing 🤣
Michael McDonald is a Vegas lounge act.
He certainly became one.
My only tolerance of him is the Minute By Minute album - other than that , his voice annoys the shyte outta me
Not a fan of the Michael McDonald era
I hear ya but his style kept them current and popular. Tom Johnston eventually returned and they’re still touring to this day with McDonald.
Doobies sucked without Tom Johnston.
Only a Fan of Michael Mcdonald era
