- Coming up next the two key members of the rock and roll chapter of one the world’s greatest classic bands: the Doobie Brothers tell us a truly funny story. Tom Johnston and Pat Simmons were the principals of the Doobies' phenomenal 70s radio hits… Tom Johnston believed that if they could get all the politicians together, all the world’s leaders together on a grassy hill with the sun shining and let the music play, they would figure out they all had a lot more in common than they thought... And we could work toward a utopian world. Well as Tom will admit, it was foolish thinking and would never happen but it made for a great song. It became the fruit of “Listen to the Music” the Doobies' first massive hit. He wrote it as an afterthought and in his own words it wrote itself… All of a sudden he had this great song… coming up a masterclass in classic riffs.

Much was changing in music as the 60s switched over to the 70s. Vietnam was raging, young men were being drafted and were being shipped off, unsure of what the future would hold. It was a time of great trial. It really came to a boil when the tragedy transpired at Kent State in early May of 1970. It was in this exasperating time that a band named the Doobie Brothers formed in San Jose California.
The band would have a massive run through the rock era to now. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020 though they should have been a first ballot. The band's two iterations, the Rock and the soul… From 1970 to 1975 it featured lead vocalist Tom Johnston along with the great Pat Simmons leading their classic straight-ahead rock sound that included a mix of Folk, R&B, and Country with hits galore that would dominate radio from their release to now. Songs like today’s focus: Listen to the Music, as well China Grove, Long Train Running and so many more.
Then Micheal McDonald joined the band in 1975 as a keyboard player and second lead vocalist, to give some relief to Johnston, who had some serious health challenges at the time. This brought a pop-soul element to the band including Taking it to the Streets and the #1 smash What A Fool Believes. They broke up for a time to the chagrin of Michael Douglas… then came back together with Johnston and Simmons hitting the charts at the end of the 80s with The Doctor.
The Doobies' first album came out in the spring of 1971 through Warner Bros. Produced by Lenny Wanoker and Ted Templemen who would become a mainstay with the band. The first single called Nobody failed to chart as did the album… The single was rereleased and did a little better charting at #58 on the Hot 100 but it was the second album.
Poll: Which rock band had the greatest background vocals ever?
Pink Floyd.
I'll nominate ... Queen.
I'll also nominate Van Halen.
Queen for sure! Styx is great as well! Mamas and The Papas are purty good too, though they aren't really a "rock" band.
Crosby, Stills & Nash immediately comes to mind.
The 5th Dimension and The Doobie Brothers are right there too.
Queen
Heart
The Beach Boys
Fleetwood Mac
Another Park, another Sunday, is undoubtedly a forgotten gem in the Doobie Brah's repertoire.
The Doobies- a thousand years from now, their music will still be streaming across galaxies... Peace
I swear Adam, you have the coolest job in the world. You're sitting there, 3 feet away from a frickin LEGEND, watching him play the riff to one of the great songs in history, telling you how he wrote it. That must be absolutely INSANE lol.
It is. I love it! Never get old!
@@ProfessorofRockit’s not an easy job but if you love Do’Ouro it (which you do) it helps.
yeh amazing pof intrviews high profile legends my nephew was in a band several years ago they opened up met tom.and the guys showed him his gear nice of him he was just a teen playing guitar they got to see part of the show from sidestage surreal how great those guys were are onstage but giving back to young guys starting out super nice to them veteran crew also yeh have give pof credit he was just a few feey away watching them play iconic riffs my nephew can play the song today and a few others
I would be shaking!
I totally agree. And to maintain your cool and not get all school girl giddy....ROFL
I’ve seen the Doobies at least 10 times in my 63 years. They never disappoint. Have taken all 3 of my kids to see them. When I realized that they were singing right along with me to the songs I knew I’d raised em right.
I am now 67 years old. I have seen the Doobie Brothers at least 4 times over the years. Always a blast .
I was attending San Jose State, back in the late 60's, early 70's. We used to go up to Los Gatos to a place called the Chateau Regis/Chateau Liberte. The Doobies used to play there quite often, along with other now famous Bay Area bands. Those were the best times for rock. I never cared for the Doobies once McDonald joined the band. Liked the old sound better, but thats just me. They were still a good band.
Ah, the Doctor! I remember being blown away as a 12-year-old when I heard that rock n' roll guitar and piano intro. Our school bus was fitted with a radio (something I have never seen since), and every time the Doctor came on, the driver would oblige my request to CRANK IT UP!!! The message of the song has stuck with me ever since: music is indeed the doctor of my soul.
Doobie Brothers have always been a phenomenal group. My aunt introduced me to the best groups and music of the 70's! She was a teenager but she let me hang with her. I asked her why they had such a funny name and she just laughed and laughed. She said I would understand it when I was a big girl and not to worry about it now. I still love to hang out with her when it's possible. My father (her big brother) didn't like that she took me with her so often because she was the Doobie sister... 😂.
Love the Doobies "Without you" most of all. Straight in your face R&R.
The Doobies have been mainstays in my life. My daughter, born in 1974, was raised on them - and passed them on to HER kids (and shares them now with HER grandkids). She and I were just texting about the Doobies - coincidently the same day this came out. Their music - from finger pickin' to smooth electronics - always a joy.
I love the Doobies in every incarnation... I got a chance to meet Tom back in the 80's I was driving taxi out of the airport in Burlington VT, and their ride was late and almost got to drive them to Lake Placid NY but the bus showed up at the last minute. It's funny when you see an artist in person you fail to recognize them, he is one of the kindest people you could ever meet.
He’s such a nice man.
I was taking guitar lessons 2 blocks away from that house on 12th St back then. Met Pat and John several times. They were absolute local rock heros. I still can't get enough of "Slat Key Soquel Rag" and "Neil's Fandango." Album cuts that are timeless for the die hard fans. Love these guys.
So cool! Thanks for sharing!
That’s awesome!
Saw Doobie's in Chicago the first time when Mom was playing a club after hours following a show...They were the Band on before her little stint with one of the groups she often jammed with on Keyboards. Great Guys who were great with the kids backstage. Have all the Doobie Albums through the 80's and still crank 'em as soon as the first note snaps the lobes into place. ALWAYS AMONG THE CRUISIN' TUNES FOR THE ROAD WITH THE HARLEY'S OR ON FOUR OR MORE WHEELS.
Love The Doobie's been listening to them since I was 13 years old and now I'm 62!!!
Saw the Doobie Brothers in 1975 in Asheville NC. I was 16. Now I’m 65 and still love their music. Their music just makes you feel good. My favorite band.
Got my notice in 73 to report to the draft board Doobie Brothers music was like medicine Felt So Good when Tom Johnson reappeared with the doctor what a great humble awesome musician keep rocking Tom you too Pat
Thanks for sharing
Music is" the doctor"! Lol😊
I wasn't even born yet when they got together and cut their first single/record, and I love their music so much. It's always nice to hear something you can "feel " w/o being there. I would love to have your job and meet all these legendary musicians.
Fantastic to see Tom back on stage, he and Pat, to me, are the Doobies. The Captain and Me came out when I hit my teens...been listening ever since. Looking forward to seeing them this summer.
Where are you seeing them?
Charlotte
we hope to go to doswell meadow event park in va. friend working on tickets you have to get months ahead he says otherwise no way van get tickets last year ringo all stars steely dan sold out in a few days so im sending him.200 dollars maybe we can get seats for doobies
Professor, how do you keep from freaking out every time one of these legends starts playing these legendary riffs in front of you! Thanks again for these amazing interviews!
Right? It's hard!
@Professor of Rock Do you ever ask for autographs?
I've loved the Doobies for 52 years now. Great songwriting, great harmonies, great soul. Really enjoy their Quadio recordings. If you haven't heard them, you're in for a sonic treat!
My oldest sister bought me "The Doobie Brothers" 1st album for my 16th birthday. She thought they had a goofy name and was reading the song titles at a Tower Records, and saw "Travelin' Man" and of course she was a huge Ricky Nelson fan and she was tired of me playing her records, Traveling Man by Ricky Nelson was one of her 45's and I wore it out. She had a Sears stereo record player with removable speakers that she had gotten for her 18th birthday, and she gave that to me for my 16th birthday. The first song I played on it was the same title on the Doobie Brothers album. It wasn't the same song as Nelson's but I was HOOKED! I learned to strum the old Martin guitar that our So. Baptist preacher gave me years before. The second album was of course even better and the rest is history.
Hey Adam....you sound MUCH better today. Thank you for toughing it out for us this past week! We ❤you.
Thanks! It's been rough but music can get us through anything!
Adam is the HARDEST WORKING guy. He's earned the respect of the artists he interviews.
Orémus Y'all.
My parents went to see them in August of '79 I think, in Cincinnati, OH. My mom was pregnant with me, and my dad snuck a fifth of Jack in her maternity pants under her belly, under me lol. Anytime someone asks what my first concert was, I say The Doobie Brothers. I've always had a cosmic connection with them, but I've never been able to see them live out of her belly, and I wish I had. One day, hopefully.
Love the Doobie Brothers! Back in the early 70’s, went to a little joint in Bossier City,La. and the house band there were named DANNY AND JERRY. They were a great band and I can remember dancing to Long train running with the young lady who became my wife. 50 years later,we’re still dancing to it. GREAT MEMORIES!
"what the people need is a way to make them smile" great line on a great song
I love the Doobie Brothers! I think their songs are timeless!
I agree. So many classics!
Great humble guys making great music! Thanks Adam for letting us discover the human side of these artits!
Always loved the Doobie Brothers for years, almost forgot and about them (how could I??!!) but rediscovered recently and can't get enough of their sounds and music!!! Great Episode @ProfessorofRock Love It!!!
Takes me right back to the 70"s, not just hearing the music but seeing them talking about those days and all those old pictures you showed, thanks for the memoirs Adam, you never fail to bring me back!!! ❤
The moment where Tom nonchalantly launches into LTR is really cool. Must have made all your hairs stand on end being there.
It was AMAZING!
I would have been on the verge of crying there.
I envy you the Doobies were the one big band outside the Beatles who I never saw live. Where did you see them?
Great band great sound. Love that southern fried rock. Saw them live in 91.
Yeah Tom just went into a room for 20 mins and came out with these amazing lyrics. And Pat just decided to sprinkle in some stuff and the song wrote itself. What I would do to have super powers like that!!
Love them, and loved jamming to their music. We had the 45 of Long Train Running, and even our mom like it, and some of their others too. Takes me back and makes me happy. 💜💃😎
For sure!
Thank God musicians aint politicians. Ask them a simple question and they give u the answer with a back story of their answer!
BRILLIANT! cheers Professor!
Thanks for watching!
I’d vote for uncle Ted
@HubertofLiege
I'd vote for Alice Cooper, because he wants to be elected 😎
@@dmitryowens Right On! 🤨🤜
I saw The Doobie Brothers at the Beale St music festival in 03 (I think). I was going to see Counting Crows, and found out like 2 days before I left that the Doobies were playing the same stage right after them. By the times Counting Crows took the stage, I had managed to get within 20 feet of the stage. When the Doobies went on, I was up against the barricade! It was AWESOME! One of my all time favorite bands, followed by one of my favorite bands from growing up, listening to my parents' music. Then the Doobies had Adam and Charlie come on stage and sing with them. It was definitely the coolest show I have ever seen!
I liked that you put that clip from “Romancing the Stone” in there!😂
One song I really like by them is “I Cheat the Hangman.”
I love it too!
Some bands created timeless classics. The Doobies are on that list. My kids absolutely love their music. When those songs come up on the playlist the volume is cranked up a few notches!
This brings back such great memories of my best friend and me riding down the road in my old(and I do mean OLD) 1947 Volkswagen Bug. Windows down and signing at the top of our lungs with the Doobies, knowing every word to every song that came on the radio.
same but mine was 1974 wish i still.had 48 thats awesome the shop i bought mine from.installed am fm radio and 4 small kracos not great not bad either no ac open the front vents rock out to doobies on local rock station
Anytime i hear the Doobies I think of my late sister. She was such a big fan. Like your father and you, Adam, my sister and I shared a strong bond for music. She introduced me to so many different bands. Thank you for this story today professor. 😊
I like all generations of this BAND and as a Northern California girl (spent many years in San Francisco and know some of the people you yalk about in several episode) this music and this song brings back good memories! My father as well introduced me to their music after hearing them on the radio. Another great episode Adam!
My dad is a huge fan so I grew up listening to them. Pat is my favorite, and The Captain and Me is my favorite album. How can you not love a band with 2 drummers?😍❤️🔥
I got to watch them live in the early 70’s - part of my high school days. Was amazed at the dual drummers. The concert was at the Tulsa Assembly Center. Love their music.
Thank you for a wonderful trip down memory lane. I fell in love with them in 1971. Had the pleasure of seeing them at Madison Square Garden in 1980. I then got to see them in Sugarland, Texas, in 2018.
I love both iterations of the group. It goes to show their versatility.
My first Doobie Brothers concert was in 1975...the last time..2016...Always amazing...a slice of Americana.
Love the Doobies, i like both Ton and Michael, each had classics. South City Midnight Lady, China Grove, and of course Black Water. Great interview Adam!
LTR is a classic, always turn that one up never gets old
Great interview! And I love how you sneak in that Michael Douglas reference! Lol.
Doobie Bros. The 70's. Nuff said! One of my all-time favorite groups. Great live shows and albums by great singers/musicians.
One of my favorite Doobie Brothers songs! I love both the Tom Johnston and Michael McDonald eras of the group. I have every album they made!
Dude! Such a good point about a father handing down music to his son on par with throwing a ball. You are so right. That comment really moved me Professor.
I really appreciate your comment about handling down your music to your kids. So true. 👍🏻👍🏻
Doobie Brothers songs are so easy to listen to and stick with you a long time. Great band great sound. The 70's was the era of great music and great artists. What a pleasure to have seen it all unfold.
I played their music in the house for years and brought my wife and three teenage kids to see them a few years ago at a smaller venue. We had tickets in the fourth row right in front of Pat Simmons. They opened with Take me in your arms and my kids didn’t sit down until the show was over. After the show, my kids just stood there clapping while everyone filed out of the place. Pat looked down at them, then at me, and just shook his head. I like to believe he realized right there that their music transcends generations and will continue to do so.
Toulouse Street was the very first album I bought when I returned from Southeast Asia in '72. Then saw them in concert the following year.
Thanks for sharing.
Where?
The Captain and Me was such a good album!! They've done a lot of good songs over the years.
Love me some Doobie Bros. I jam the solo on "China Grove" as part of go to finger warmups. It's trickier than one might imagine. Thanks Tom. THAT is a classic!
Great interview Prof!! Tom Johnston's Doobies -- musically very similar to Terry Kath's Chicago annd after Kath died the softer Chicago.
Music is handed down not just from father to sons, but daughters also! My father handed me all my albums & we also played the songs in songbooks with the cords! ❤
I still remember the first time i heard Black Water. I was 3 or 4 and headed to the basement of my grandparent's basement to mess with the pool table. They had and organ and a jukebox down there, and a radio that was never turned off. The song had just started, and i walked around the table shuffling the balls around while it played. It was like magic. I loved everything about it. I still get the same feeling every time it comes on.
You gotta love any band that featured not one, but TWO former members of Steely Dan: Jeff "Skunk" Baxter and Michael MacDonald.
That's right!
Technically, Michael McDonald wasn't an official member of Steely Dan. But he did sing some backup! I digress though.
Skunk is a phenomenal player.
What’s the definition of “official member of Steely Dan”? 😊
@@pbwbrian53 a member over 9 inches
I like the section when he sings, "All the time..." in A when the chords walk down and back up with the open strings droning. Simple, effective, and just so nice on the ears.
Thank you Professor for giving me great memories of two great song's from my two favorite years of my life when I was 18-19 years old..1972-73
The Dobbie Brothers wrote the sound track for the 70's for sure! What a classic Rock & Roll band!❤
Great interview Adam!
Thanks WIlliam!
And "Takin" Care of Business" was also just a jam... So cool to see the creators of these great Doobie's songs. Back in the day when I had no idea what a doobie was... Both McDonald era and Johnston era are great just as Roth and Hagar eras for Van Halen.
Both eras were great but I have a real appreciation for Michael MacDonald. Especially the way he melded with so many other musicians and even had a hand in one of Van Halen's biggest hits.
First concert I ever went to, in Duluth Minnesota, when I was in 10th or 11th grade. It was friends that roped me in to going. I didn’t understand how great it was that I got to experience them live. I do remember thinking it was so strange to actually see people I had heard on the radio. Wild to see them 47 years later, and they don’t look that old! Amazing band.
Love this band. Wore out so many of their 8 Tracks. Thank you Professor. That interview had to be so cool!
Without love, where would you be right now?
I would be without that song because I love that song. Easily my fave Doobie Brothers song.
My favorite band of all time.....classy group of guys who had done a lot for others through their charitable work. Even better live to see - Rock on Down the Highway and Listen to the Music!!
Ooooohhhh yes! Soundtrack of my teens. Took a road trip and just played DB over and over (cassette). Hot summer, swimming the surf, camping, driving a huge 50’s car drifting the corners on loose metal roads. Now days I’m driving a bit further to avoid the tricky intersections. :(
My older sister was a huge DB fan! I grew up listening to them but never really gained a love for them until my 20s. Since then I couldn't tell ya how many times I've seen them live! Last summer I saw them and still sounded so amazing from the first time I saw them years ago!!
The Doobs are definitely in the soundtrack of my life. ❤🎉
So glad Tom is back touring this year.. The 50th tour was amazing with everyone. I think I will see them this year too.. Their music will never die,,,
Love the Doobies! My fave album is The Captain and Me, but they're all great. Side note...it just struck me how much Tom looks like Burton Cummings!
Just saw them Sunday Night and am grateful I got to see them live before it's too late. Mark Russo playing Saxophone with them currently was phenomenal.
I am so happy that ive seen this group of legends.
The Doobie Bros. was my first live concert, before Michael McDonald, around '74. It was great, but as my first concert, I was not ready for the sound level of a rock concert. Thanks for sharing the details of their songs and the band.
I was not a big fan of the Doobie Brothers when I first heard them. Back around 73 I heard them play at Rutgers University, New Brunswick. I was blown away and left a fan. I've been to many of their concerts and always leave energized.
They are a great band
Those two guys came out with a really good biography
I love the Tom Johnson era but What a fool believes is my favorite Doobie Brothers song.
Great interview, loved how he just picked up the guitar and played like putting the 8-track into the stereo.
I remember watching 'Good Times' and the Doobie Brothers made an appearance and one of the casr members said "Which Doobie you be?"... still remember that 40 years later 😂😂😂
I once told my boss that every time I heard a Doobies song a big goofy smile would appear on my face. He asked 'why?' I had never thought about it until then but upon reflection it seems to me this band represents the best of what the 70s music scene had to offer. The songs had great harmonies, great lyrics, plus there was such a wonderful variety of moods and themes. I'll put it this way: with most bands I have a single 'favorite' song. With the Doobs it's impossible to choose just one as being superior to perhaps 15 others... Seeing those guys still rocking provides such joy to this 67 year old!
Great the Doobies. I can't finish a cruise around the lake without groving. To it keeps you running. Thanks
You're right. Its a standard and will always be relevant. Great video.
South City midnight lady is beautiful . I was happy to have taught myself to play it on guitar.
Pro,, your right.. as long as you liked music at your age or older it was all good. Those were the days. Thanks for The Music
Fall of 1974, my first ever concert, Doobie Bros “What Were once Vices are Now Habits” tour. 👍😀 Opened by REO Speedwagon 😉👌 I’ve Loved them ever since, all iterations! 😀
One of the first songs I learned to play by ear, off my Dad’s Doobie Bros album, was China Grove. Lived their flows.
Saw the doobie brothers in October 2023 in Calgary AB and oh my gosh they were great playing tracks like black water my absolute favourite song and listen to the music long train runnin and all the other great songs they released it was awesome
I saw the Doobie Bros. in Walla Walla in 1970 (or was it 1971?). As I recall the concert was a total jam session. They only played 3-4 songs (although there may have been some merging of songs making it difficult to tell where one song ended and another began.) They played in Cordiner Hall on the Whitman College campus. At the time it was brand new and was an acoustic masterpiece. After all these years I wish I had a recording so I could revisit the concert to see the seeds of their great career. Thank you Tom and Patrick! Your music has been an inspiration for my life.
The Captain and Me was the very first album I purchased and loved it. A band with two greatest hits albums, with completely different songs, in (basically) the same decade. AND if it is their last big hit, The Doctor is a great way to sum it all up... "Music is The Doctor of my soul!" --- With that being said, I will remind you of my request that they include their cover of "My Sharona" - when that song came out, Patrick Simmons started playing it at their concert in Buffalo, NY. He did the opening riff, the crowd WENT NUTS and then he stopped and said "I love that song" I would love to hear them include it for the 2024 tour!
I was playing in a Bar Band when Listen to the Music came out. We quickly learned it and used it as out opening song for the next several years. It set the mood for the entire night. Definitely a Modern Classic,
That song came out two months after I graduated from highs school and a month before I went into the army. When I got to Korea in January 73, I bought a stereo system and the first album I bought was Toulouse Street. Listen to the Music was the theme song for that year in Korea often accompanied by Korean MJ "doobies" which were plentiful back then.
I'm thankful for your channel and the content you provide. While I've listened to and read plenty of interviews I know I haven't heard or read everything. I still have a lot to catch up on and you help me do that. Your efforts provide some fascinating insights as well as wonderful interviews. Thank you.
Thanks Professor you always bring us such great memories in music.💕💕💕👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I love how you talk about music being handed down from generation to generation and it does matter, it does make a difference, we used to share music with our kids And them with us, now in the last year I've gotten to literally hand music down to my grandkids by giving my trumpet and violin to two of my granddaughters and a drum kit to my grandson, the ability and desire to make music continues in the family
My son was born in '70 so he couldn't help but grow up with the Doobies cause his old man wore out their 8 trks and the cassettes. He heard them pretty much from the time he was born (close to anyway). To this day at age 53 he's still a Doobies fan. They're second in my favorites only because I'm Dave Clark 5 from their git-go in US.
Great interview! Very interesting! Love the Doobies! Saw them at Zilker Austin, TX at some festival! This band is the soundtrack of my youth for sure! They taught me a lot on guitar as well! Thanks Professor!
Saw the Doobs play with Journey at Pine Knob a few years back . . . I never realized how many of their songs I knew until that show. I had never really considered myself a fan of the band before then, but certainly do now.
The doobies have a certain groove that just makes you feel great.
