Just finished watching Ninjago Crystallized and then I thought back and I remembered Watching this video and you were right that’s so cool great job
Mistakè said that the Oni was unleashed inside him so the venom didn’t corrupt him but it made his Oni side take over
Maybe it was a mix of both. The overlord is the source of all evil in ninjago, implying that the devourer was somehow influenced or created by him. His evil in the devourer mixed with the Oni in Garmadon probably created what we saw,

More evidence supporting this theory is in a simple detail: the Great Devourer’s eyes. They’re a pinkish purple color, which in Ninjago is nearly always associated with evil. The overlord’s power, reborn Garmadon’s power, and the eyes of oni are all purple. That’s always the main color scheme for evil in Ninjago: black and purple. If the Devourer is controlled by the overlord, then it would make sense why it’s eyes would be an unnatural pink-purple color. We even see with Wojira in sea bound that it’s not hard to control a world destroying beast, as Kalmar did it easily and changed the color of Wojira’s eyes.

That makes a lot of sense. Magic venom, incredible size, and long lifespan aside, the devourer is quite obviously little more than a dumb animal, no way this was its own doing.
my headcannon for a couple years was just that the great devourer’s venom only awakened evil which explained why the venom awakened both garmadons pre-existing evil and the stone warriors were previously possessed
Well, I came back to this after the finale of crystallized, and can say, this theory has been confirmed, the overlord himself said that he was the one who corrupted the great devourer and set it against garmadon, and he was the one who possessed the serpent which bit garmadons hand when he was a child by putting an extension of his evil into the venom of the devourer

I feel like the dark matter may have come before the great devourer. Maybe Overlord used it to corrupt the Devourer and it possibly mutated it?

I personally feel that there is even more forces at play here, bearing in mind that Garmadon was born representing the Oni half of the First Spinjitsu master and is the master of destruction. I think your theory has a lot of merit, but the fact that Garmadon, representing destruction, ended up being turned against his brother to recreate the endless conflict between creation and destruction/dragon and oni is also, for me, too coincidental

The overlord said he had been planning his return for thousands of years, it is entirely possible he corrupted the devourer knowing it would bite one of the sons of the first spinjitsu master and knew they would eventually end up on the dark island and free him

This is an interesting theory about Gardamon. That I think it was Overlord because in the end of Episode 13, Gardamon defeated the Great Devoror and in theory, it would turn him back normal, but he is still evil after the snake’s defeat. But in the end of episode 26, he turns back to normal after the defeat of the Overlord.

I come from the future with knowledge. The Overlord did it. HE DOES EVERYTHING
At least now it’s confirmed that it was The Overlord behind it all along hinted at since season 2 during Lloyd’s and The Overlord’s first faceoff on Garmatron in tank mode when The Overlord said “Stupid boy, I’ve been planning this for thousands of years”. Since The FSM split the land in 2, The Overlord corrupted The Great Devourer to set his return plan in motion to only need to play the waiting game until Garmadon became full evil side and found the dark island.

As mentioned in Season 8 TFSM had two sons that represented the Oni and the Dragons, and all of us know that Garmadon represents the Oni part. Meaning that Garmadon sooner or later would be corrupted, the Devouers venom is like the Dark matter, it corrupts someone, and when it bit Garmadon it was not the reason for his downfall, it just made the evil inside him more intense and powerful
I personally think the Garmadon that was corrupted by the great devourer is not his Oni side. He could turn into his Oni form he cared and didn’t have hate like an Oni and it was also stated that Darkness is different from destruction. My theory is the Garmadon we see in season 8-10 and Crystalized is the Oni Garmadon he can now use the powers of destruction, he can transform into his Oni form, and he hates everything and cares about nothing like an Oni and the reason why I think this is because this Garmadon was way after Garmadon was ridded of the Venom and no longer was corrupted by Venom and Darkness.

Directly: the Great Devourer, since it was the one who bit him and initially turned him evil, though it can't be said he would never have turned wicked due to his Oni heritage.
Indirectly: the Overlord, since it is heavily, heavily, _heavily_ implied that he was responsible for the creation of the Devourer, whether intentional or accidental. It's more up in the air if it was acting on his will when it bit Garmadon or if it was just coincidence, but it still bears mentioning.

The Overlord was using The Great Devourer as a pawn to find a worthy vessel, but he failed, so he used Lord Garmadon as his vessel. It’s all the Overlord’s fault, he emitted it himself.

This is right, but the reason the overlord corrupted the Devourer to turn Garmadon evil wasn’t to divide the first spinjitzu master’s family, but rather so he could possess him and return to his original dragon form like he did at the end of season 2.
The ultimate revenge, Taking one of his sons to turn him evil by a serpent venom and using him as a vessel.

It is highly considered that since the overlord is the source of all darkness, he might of made the snake evil therefore lord garmadon would be bitten so in that case it would be Overlords fault.

Wow this is an amazing theory, I never thought of that, I don’t think it is dark matter since the characters in the final battle are far more evil. Maybe it was the oni since “the evil of the oni was unleashed”.
They aren’t the same, but they are similar. Dark matter just makes everyone a brainwashed servant of the Overlord, think of it as a general use tool, it can infect anyone. The venom basically takes corruptible traits that someone has and intensifies them, for Garmadon, this trait was the element of destruction/his oni side, it was likely made specifically for Garmadon.
Now it makes sense why Overlord said "I've been planning this for thousands of years".

I agree with you on this, I always thought that the Overlord was responsible for the Great Devourer for years, I mean all the signs were there, Garmadon turning evil and being the one to help the Overlord, and bringing the stone army back to life, and the Overlord did say that he been planning for a hundred years.
Basically at first garmadon was evil but he could still somewhat control his actions they were just influinced by the devourers venom however in sog harumi brought back the darkest side of garmadon making him lose any humanity he had left

Fun fact: it gets weirder. In the Ninjago Legacy short "Golden Hour," which picks up (technically) between Season 7 and Season 8, it is revealed that Wu could have prevented Garmadon's corruption. Even though he didn't know it, Garmadon wasn't wrong when he said that it was Wu's fault.
