- Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria (retd.) is the former Chief of Air Staff, a highly decorated officer with a distinguished career spanning over four decades. He previously served as the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief (AOC-in-C) at Southern Air Command. During his tenure as Vice Chief of the Air Staff, he played a pivotal role in the Rafale negotiations. He has joined the BJP right before the 2024 Lok Sabha Polls.
In this edition of the ANI podcast with Smita Prakash, Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria (retd.) defends the Agnipath schemes introduced by the NDA government in 2022. He emphasises that the Agnipath scheme was the result of extensive discussions among the armed forces, government departments, and paramilitary forces over two years.
He asserts that the scheme is not merely about reducing pension liabilities but about adapting to evolving technology and combat threats. He explains that the scheme aims to create a younger, more technologically adept force, with 25% of Agniveers being retained for permanent service.

As a layperson I understand the Agniveer scheme clearly and even more the dire need to have discipline installed in our youth. Armed Forces recruitment is based on necessity and should not be equated with 'employment'. It is voluntary. It should not be a subject of discussion by civilians.
Armed forces since inception had always been a source of employment in a country like india where the majority of people who enroll in junior positions Belong to lower middle class

Well done Smita P, the Retd AF Chief has so well explained, point by point he has put the details absolutely correct, yes the technical aspects, technology and young talent are the best for the future of the country, the % of people who leave the Armed Forces & join central forces, public services will be a huge factor in bringing in well disciplined youth. I feel in the next 20 years there will be great pool of dedicated professionals. Armed forces do a lot of brain storming, training on a continuous basis and the soldiers are well skilled.
Vicious Politicians are damaging the reputation of the Armed Forces in a very serious manner, this damaging statements have crossed all the limits. I request the PM, DF, CDS should go out in educating the public ( who are interested to join Armed Forces) to improve understanding & knowledge, make several senior retired Officers take such leads in educating the public. Thanks for this excellent video, it will be mandatory to make a bill that states should recruit AGNV soldiers to Police & other state government jobs. You have the resources and honesty to bring this issue to the right people. If it's not addressed promptly, your podcast may face the same challenges that String Vinod experienced.
Firstly doubting youth that an Agniveer may become a mercenary is an insult to our youth who’ve chosen Military as a career. Secondly what stops a 30 year old or 35 year old retiree with more years of training becoming a mercenary. Did any short service officer ever become one? It’s like saying after 4 years of MBBS a doctor might become a drug peddler

Armed forces work on SOP. Every inch and bit u move is driven by such operating process. So asking questions about forces effectiveness on deploying anyone be regular or agniveer, is driven by such operating procedures. This SOP word I didn't hear from air chief, but he would agree to it.
So anyone civilians questioning forces shud understand this.
I have an acquaintance who served in army for 15 years and later joined large private sector conglomerate in capacity of security guard or jamadar. He during his tenure in army learned to drive Russian Left hand drive heavy vehicle. He studied and appeared for recruitment in ONGC and got selected based on his written score and driving skills. ONGC often employees American and Russian heavy vehicle and skill of this particular individual came handy. Now he is a full time employee of ONGC.
He is joining BjP, how could he contradict it.

Vets is a very common term for veterans.
One must remember that Admiral KB Singh and General Naravane are coursemates of ACM Bhadauria and were chiefs at the same time as ACM Bhadauria! They were all consulted. If one or two of them had a different point of view, he/ they should have given a dissent note on file at that time. In any case, once a decision has been taken which none of them opposed while in service, it doesn’t show them in very good light to start criticising it now.

I think the govt must bring a bill to make it compulsory service to the Nation by all young gen, at least one member from every family to serve the country in the age group of 21+ for two years, before joining any other job. And a one time package of specific amount of compensation other than a normal salary. And dont give any reservation after two years of service. There is law dept, kitchen, teachers, administration, clerks, hospital, doctors, nurses, cleaners etc.
In adittion you have cyber warfare.
Investigation departements, research departements. Etc etc.
6. To become super power we need many overseas basis, with forces.
7. We need permanent contigent with the United nation peace keeping forces.
8. For disaster management etc.
Great video but how do you get it out in public domain. F more than 5 million subscribers only just over twelve thousand have seen this as of time of writing. An important point - the 75% going out will never have had the option under the old scheme.... So more people get chance to make money instead of remaining unemployed.

Roman Empire before that Greek city states and then Mauryan Empire's standing militaries were instrumental to their power as well as defending from threats like Carthagian aggression against Rome under Hannibal or Greek invasions when Chanakya was with Chandragupta. to Mughal Mansabdari system that defended north west India. Most important was how British India maintained huge standing armies composed of local soldiers funded by the very poor Indians who were taxed to death. The majestic Teen Murti Bhavan in Delhi was the residence of the chief of British Indian army residence which then Jawaharlal Nehru took over to keep the Army under political thumb. All retired soldiers of British army got land and a great pension (Pak army still gives land to it's officers). Soldiers dying in battle got same benefits for their families. British Indian army fought in Egypt, France, Burma, Jordan, Africa and won against all odds with huge sacrifice of men. There were special hospitals in Britain to treat wounded Indian soldiers of WW II. Just to save pension and keep soldier numbers low and young is historically suicidal. The future of India is with soldiers governing large civilian areas under martial law considering the internal population threats. Save on Army at your own peril. Marathas and Sikhs lost to standing British armies made up of Indian soldiers who were paid well with pensions and land, while Maratha chieftains and Sikh Misls destroyed themselves internally over land and power. Indian economy is a case in point with very low wage growth even if employment increases. Without incentives, wage growth, land and assets for common folk from where soldiers also come, India stands to lose. May be this self-destruction will give birth to a new autocratic or military dictatorship, which at the outset is what India always needed, just like how Mao's PLA shaped China.

Although I support the scheme.... I just feel the retention should be 60 to 70% ... Otherwise there will either be a lot of unhealthy competition or unnecessary loss of morale/ motivation. I say this because majority defines the mood of the team and its performance. Eg. He said in a team of 8, only 4 would be agniveer. But i ask in that 4, 3 will be kicked out?

When trying something new... a small percentage of recruits could have been inducted and placed in a variety of roles... and then depending upon the feedback... the agnipath format could have been tweaked and quota increased...
Why Not make the agniveers who have been discharged from service as a instructors in schools (govt or private).

I agree with Mr. Bhadauria, however, there is a clear and visible sense of discontent among the people of the Hindi heartland (contributing majorly to the Indian Armed Forces) towards the Govt's taken for granted attitude towards the youth who, many of whom would have wanted to genuinely join the Armed forces for the nation. This is because 75% of them would be sent back into the society, while they wanted to continue in the Armed forces, though maybe on lower ranks. This would affect, in the long run, the risk taking appetite, making the Agniveers more risk averse, gradually. Hence, for the scheme to run effectively and efficiently, there must be measures &/or incentives to facilitate the provision of different career opportunities for the 75% of the Agniveers returning into the society. This is a huge flaw currently in the Agniveer scheme. Mr. Bhadauriya rightly expressed the Govt's correct opinion that number of years for each batch of the Agniveer program is 4 years, as he explained, not too long, not too short.
US Army hires contract soldiers for 2 years also. Trains them for 2 months and put in real war. Training is rigorous and many fail to clear. Those who clear training with a minimum level of expertise join for 2 or 3 years contract. Army is not for "employment" it is for "defence".

Nation will weaken when we start treating armed forces like a job, officers in short service commission have been serving regardless for no benefits of the permanent ones without a single complaint.
Get your head out of the sand. SSC officers are used and the ones who're released and their families are left to fend for themselves. 5 years is short service. 10 years is straight up exploitation.

People should at least wait for few more years before criticizing it. Not the biggest fan of BJP lately, but one thing I trust then is national security, especially against Congress. A few days back Karan Thapar also found some distractors of agniveer in his podcast. My comments were:
Karan you are biased against every naive and policy move of BJP and you also somehow find Bjp distractors. Against every vacancy civilian or military 100000 Times applications are rec'd do all are recruited not all but few. Agneeveer also provides for 25% such recruitment. Further with this type of turnover if not all citizens but most of the citizens would have a taste of military discipline and in time of crises such 75% retired Agniveers would be handy. This way every citizen 8:51 would be trained in combat. With simmering borders all around every patriot Indians need to be inducted, trained and conditioned to combat.
Will there be a more employable and sought after candidate for any employer in the job market than a highly trained, and particularly technically trained Angniveer, compared to another university pass person, everybody knows the standard of education in India. It seem very good for the civilian world, how good the scheme is for Military is being debated.

The BJP government is absolutely pathetic in communication. At best it is reactive and therefore it is always on the back foot w.r.t the opposition’s narratives. This situation is probably the result of over-centralisation and limited delegation of responsibilities when it comes to talking to the media or through social media. This is probably resulting in the middle level leadership preferring to sit back and watch the super bosses on top fail.
