This is a very different type of video from me how you guys like the concept and idea. Took me an insane amount of time to make this one even if it may not look like it. Thats why I haven't uploaded anything in the past 2 weeks. Hope you guys enjoy:)

Don’t talk shit on that cat. The cat is what FINALLY got Mei banned. It was weeks of the casters of OWL randomly drawing and missing Mei, who was the oppressive core of the dominant comps at the time. We Stan that cat

We need to bring cat bans back, no one can be mad at their character being banned if a cute animal did it 😂
Which makes it a bit suspicious in that they can have influenced the cat's pick by adding some type of scent to the paper or something to finally ban Mei and still say it was random. But, hey, ACTUALLY CHOOSING the hero ban would still be better than banning completely random heroes.

We can't talk about hero pools without mentioning the week where they banned widow, cassidy, sombra, soldier, dva, and baptiste. That week was pharah week and it was hell

Many people forget that double shield's entire reason for existing was thanks to supports like Baptiste being so good, not even because of the tanks.

As a Sym player since OW beta, i think we are forgetting one of the few metas when Sym was considered viable. The Pantheon meta! Stacking og Torb's Armor, Og Brig Armor, AND Shield health from Sym 2.0's shield gen. Squishys suddenly werent as squishy as they were walking around with 500 health😭😭
Sym was like mercy hiding the tp so if your whole team died they could instantly get back on point after respawn lmao😂😂😂. The good ole days

Honorable mention: Sombra "support" meta. Back when she was released and gained ult charge from teammates who used her hacked healthpacks
Sombra wasnt played out side the OWL becouse she needs a team around her or she is trash
I swear, new OW players will never know how frustrating the “Sombra is a DPS” vs “Sombra is a support” conversations were.
she was usually to get rid genji, doomfist or dva with 4 fucking second of silence!!

You missed a meta. There was a short period (maybe a week or two long) that Bastion got buffed so much that he was practically unkillable. If he was Nanoed, he could survive D VA ultimate. I played a game on Dorado during this meta that went 12 rounds or so and lasted over an hour. Every round had a nearly invincible Bastion sitting on the payload for the entire match. I'm sure there is some footage of this time kicking around.
Yeah. The pirate ship meta was also missed in this video.

Truuuue. I even remember the exact month it was viable for a week or two - January. Whether in 2018 or 2019 I can't exactly remember but I DO remember we've stopped playing game because of pirate ship meta😂

OW1 was wild wasteland with no roll lock, but it did lead to some actual interesting and fun strategies. My most memorable match from it was when it first came out and all of our team picked Mei. Once all of the other team respawned then they all came out as Mei. It was a giant CC fest but it was still fun asf

That sounds hilarious. Too bad this can't happen anymore. If you want something like this try playing tf2 for a while. You might get lucky and get a game where everyone does something stupid like heavy with a shotgun or all demoman or gunspy or something like that.

Never heard of hero pools before, that's wild lol. I feel like they must have just given up for them to decide that banning heros at random was the way to go
While not the most broken, the 5-man rez meta is probably the one I hate the most. It was so cheesy to waste enemy CDs and Ults then essentially pull up a phase-2 of the boss fight where the enemy team who "won" the team fight is now punished.
I am glad we plastic 5 people get recognized from time to time. Bronze is already too high elo for us to climb up there.

I think hog meta would've been a good addition, it lasted a couple months and was just hog being able to one shot anyone, he could kill a full health zarya in one shot
There was a meta in Beta that had 2 zen’s, 2 Winston’s, and 2 tracers. Zens orb never disappeared off of a target out of LOS, friendly or enemy.
So it was “chase the purple balloon”

And double shield was the last time we seen Reinhardt being a good hero. For those who don't know, double shield had 2 version: poke or brawl. Poke will run Sigma and Orisa, while brawl will run Reinhardt and Orisa. DPS was hanzo bastion or reaper mei respectively.
Honestly GOATS was not really the problem. The problem was how long it took for them to patch that meta. Originally it was legit fun, I personally know Rein players were having a field day. But then it got dull having to play the same characters over and over again, because the only way to counter GOATS was to play GOATS. There was actually a somewhat functioning anti-GOATS comp developed just before 2-2-2, but it didnt exist for long. I believe it was 1-4-1? I can't remember what was in it, though. I only played it a few times.
yeah, it was quad dps, developed by a chinese team. it was ball, mercy, sombra, and the other 3 dps were pretty flexible, usually a widow, sometimes a hanzo as well, a doomfist, and a soldier were the most common. it was just about being able to focus damage in fast enough to get the picks to get a good opening.
Tbh it always took 10x longer than acceptable for them to patch... Anything in ow 1 at all
Balance patches are nowhere near perfect now in ow2, but at the very least they do it fast
The comp that was meant to counter goats but it wasn't universally able to actually deal with a good goats team
@@temmlygaming5509 it was kinda difficult to pull off successfully yeah, but at least possible unlike anything else at that point. I actually ran that comp a few times (successfully) before 2-2-2.

Either double shield or the ana Kiri mauga meta we had
Pharah mercy were an amazing counter for goats. The splash dmg would hit everyone because goats comp plays close. And pharah would get her ult in like 2 clips. Then the rest is history

Quad tank was also a thing before goats. I think goats and quad tank were signs that stacking tank utility, especially damage mitigation was just too strong. Also shoutout to orisa hog and Winston zarya.

I would maybe add the triple tank comp that dominated for a while, the Sombra EMP farm as well as the diverse dive comps (triple DPS Rogue style and the dive that was played during season 1 of OWL).
Also maybe minor comps ? Like the flex support playing Roadhog during season 1 playoffs or the season 2 stage 4 meta with hogs going fishing and Meis trying to prevent them.
As someone to played in Masters when Brig was released, she was oppressive before even GOATS. If I remember correctly, she had a 60% WR across all ranks all the way to GM. Her ability to, as a support, shut down most flankers and be able to hold up against most DPS made DPS' just worse than her in most comps. She was more of a bruiser or drain character than a support, who could heal everyone around her and instantly disengage any enemy with her stun + flail hit.
Overwatch 1 was so depressing from 2019 to 2022 like it was just tragic

Never forget the “No hero limits” speed meta from early launch OW1 double Winston, double tracer, double Lucio.
Can’t forget quad tank and junkrats flying tire.

I still think the top two worst meta still haunts me ranks like this
#1 GOATS: because it killed dive. Any possibility of playing mobile dps flank heroes were killed. Which was major part of the game that made it different from any other fps games.
2nd was Mercy: I actually never hated 2 CP until you had to defend 2nd point with Mercy absolutely doing what seems like infinite Rez and making a lost fight a won game.
Ngl, I was distracted sometimes with how smooth your Lucio movement was lmao. Either way tho, dope video. I didn’t get into ow1 back then, kinda glad I didn’t but also kinda sad I never got to experience it lol.

I'm glad I missed most of this stuff and only played toward the end of ow 1 life even with double shield being a thing (I was bronze / silver at the time so double shield wasn't nearly as picked) but good times even then, I still miss dps doomfist though
The current Pharah-Mercy pocket is right up there too.

I remember the Hide ‘n’ Seek meta being called the Necromercy meta
Blizzards team would rather cut a limb than cauterize the wound. Goats meta is a problem? Well, let's put role lock. Certain heroes are too powerful? Well, if you are lucky maybe they'll get banned this week. They don't fix the problem, they just cut pieces of the game away until the problem is gone. Seriously, the weekly bans, to this day I still don't understand how they thought it was a good idea to have heroes randomly banned instead of doing what every other game does and letting the players choose.
A lot of people forgot this about hero pools but you summoned my PTSD. THEY BANNED ASHE AND SOLDIER WHEN ECHO WAS NEW AND MORE PEOPLE PLAYED PHARA. DOUBLE FLYERS WAS TERRIBLE

Ana's ult giving you a speed boost is awesome. I wish that was still a thing. I didn't start playing OW1 towards the end though. I'm a Mercy main but the mass rez + Mercy hiding sounds tilting 😅

I’m surprised you didn’t go over the McCree meta in season 1 where he could out snipe Widows and basically had two of him on every team.
And I disappointed I didn’t get to hear about the stun meta again with Orisa, Roadhog, Brig, Cassidy, Ana and I think Junkrat or Pharah, I can’t remember

Nah it was in metal ranks also. Plat and up was infected by 2 shield.
As someone who was hardstuck diamond in OW1 the majority of my games were double
Shield unless we had a ball otp or something like that
Just a note, GOATs wasn't the first team to find out the triple support, triple tank meta but they popularized it. Also, you'll notice a pretty common theme here of broken supports enabling these metas. GOATs would not be possible without key supports, beyblade was only strong because of Ana and beyblade itself wasn't the problem as Ana was the real problem. The mercy one is obvious. Supports are the pillars of any team, you can't swap them out in the puzzle of your team as easily as tanks and DPS.
I will keep saying it, Brigette is the reason we have 5v5 lol
Forgot to mention how brig could shield bash/whip and kill tracer and 1v1 almost every hero

I think the worse metas are the ones that force you to plain certain heroes, putting GOATS at the top and Mauga at close second.

It wasn’t just 1 tank, 1 support, 2 dps that got banned. Are we forgetting the week where Mercy and Moira got banned. Or the week where like no supports got banned, but they banned like 4 dps and 2 tanks

I was there when the cat chose mei. It was one of the best times when Mei got chosen. Good time! I miss OWL. I enjoyed hero bans, but it did make different teams dominate different weeks. Goo dtimes.

Wow, I left before goats on ow1 and came back for OW2 since day 1. Never even knew they banned pools ot heroes, seems crazy
Hero bans are amazing if they would be made correctly. Players would get to choose before match what heroes needs to go so i would get Sombra and mercy banned everygame and force the enemy dps into fair dps duel and i would farm the sr of boosted mercyplayers that would have to flex into moira
Double shield did not last until the end of overwatch 1, it was still a comp but it wasn’t ‘the meta’ per say.
Also a short meta was hanzos ult with dmg boost in zarya ult , zen ult couldnt outheal it
Honestly my favorite meta of all time, tho I do main hanzo even till this day from the launch of OW.

i played ow 1 but was too young to really grasp the game (i would literally ONLY play sombra) but hero pool and blizzard banning the characters actually sounds like the worst gaming experience ive ever seen

Correction on the Beyblade meta, you didn't need Zarya. It was purely the interaction between Reaper and Ana's ultimates.
also moth meta wasn't the predecessor to the previous Mercy rez meta because the Moth meta came from the rework.
Great video! I feel like you forgot the first triple tanks meta including Hog back when Ana's nade was broken in late 2016/early 2017 but otherwise this vid is very complete. Great takes regarding the supports and Blizzard being awful at balancing the game 👍

I saw Goats meta just once in a freaking arcade mode. I did see shield meta in silver rank and in QP. It's was a headache. Skufy how would u implement hero bans?. I hated Blizzard method for them it's like my way or no way.
I atill think hero bans are a great idea if they let the players pick. Bronze-gold, Plat-masters and gm up get their own polls and get to vote to ban would be actually amazing
