    Honestly, wrapping duct tape around your neck to keep the zombies from eing able to bite through and break the skin to infect you is the smartest thing I've seen anyone do in any of these zombie movies. So props for that.

    • @arthas640
      @arthas640 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's one thing I think about a LOT. Duct tape is really hard to chew through and it's easy to apply to anything, especially clothes. Slap some duct tape on exposed skin or clothes and you've got instant near immunity to bites.

    In short.
    This movie is what you get when:
    You combine Norwegian history, culture, folklore, Evil Dead 3, horror cliches, humor and "We want to make a funny movie" with a low budget.
    There you go, and trust me, a LOT is lost in the translation.

    The scene with the "random old guy" is supposed to be funny and awkward 'cause the guy playing him is one of the most famous modern Norwegian actors Bjørn Sundquist. He's from the north, aka the coldest and darkest part of Norway, where the people are known to be particularly tough, hardened, foulmouthed bastards, and that's typically the sort of character's he portrays. Imagine Clint Eastwood or Mads Mikkelsen in a similar role and you've kinda got it.

      Super late reply but just wanted to say I'm guessing it's a sort of pun on an old Swedish-Norwegian mini-series called Rød Snø aka Red Snow. It takes place during WW2 and the plot is basically some people going on vacation and then strange and horrible things start happening. There are a lot of parallels.

  • @kuromomoiro
    @kuromomoiro 9 ปีที่แล้ว +196

    Ok, I now realize how much of this movie gets lost if you're not Norwegian^^
    First of all it's a comedy, not a serious horror movie. Horror cliches and bad effects are played up for laughs. The "vague exposition man" is an actor named Bjorn Sundqvist, who's famous for "being in every single Norwegian movie ever"(not really, but almost, due to Norwegian film industry being very tiny for many many years, and there not being a lot of famous Norwegian actors). He comes in and is this typical kind of asshole old man character that he often plays, and the awkwardness and boringness of his scene is humorous, because it's a scene that Norwegian young people will relate to (when you don't want to talk to this person but you're trying to be polite and pretend listen cause he's older and even a little scary), but I think it seems like the whole tone is pretty much lost in the dub^^ The whole nazis being the ultimate evil thing and also "Dovregubbens Hall" playing in the beginning is also something that's very indebted in Norwegian culture.
    I know there's no point in writing a long TH-cam comment about this, but I just realized how this movie is very dependent upon it's audience being Norwegians (possibly of my generation even) and that's kinda interesting to me, so yeah... guess I wrote one anyway.
    I hope Phelous takes a look at the sequel too though, in my opinion that one lost all the charm and actually pissed me off a little:/

    • @Horzuhammer
      @Horzuhammer 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +JoeRingo118 I know it's a cultural thing, but holy shit I hate dubbing. It's not like the target audience for this kind of movie can't read.. I'm not terribly into anime, but I'm a huge Dragon Ball fan, and watching that in English (no matter the dub) is just painful. Btw your "even Finns" remark caught my eye. Are we known abroad as some kind of film snobs? :D Or maybe just grumps who don't like anything..

    • @Horzuhammer
      @Horzuhammer 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      JoeRingo118
      Oh yeah, I've been called a Scandinavian on the internet so many times that I almost started to believe I was one, hahah. I like many Norwegian movies, lots of good stuff. Neither Finland nor Norway has had filmmakers like Bergman or Dreyer, so I don't know of any really mindblowingly good movies from either country, unlike from Sweden for example, but lots of really entertaining stuff none the less.

    • @kuromomoiro
      @kuromomoiro 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah! I'd say it's a very cultural thing for us. And yeah, the dub is pretty shit:/ But I think with how many just cultural "situations" there is, dubbing wouldn't work unless they switched things completely out with different referances...? But to be honest, I don't really think that would work very well either, it's just not an i ternational film^^

    • @Horzuhammer
      @Horzuhammer 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hungryhungryheart
      Yeah, I was making a more general statement about dubbing. It's been a long time since I've seen this movie, and never in English so can't say much about that. You know it's a common practice in many countries, but still when you hear a movie like this been dubbed, you go "this isn't fucking Winnie the Pooh, why is this necessary?" The funny thing is, we nordics are pretty much a minority in the world with our fancy subtitles. I've heard many English speaking people go "who wants to read while watching a movie, I'm not reading a book!" which sounds absolutely absurd to me. Maybe it really is a chore to do if you haven't grown into it, who knows..

  • @LibraGamesUnlimited

    What is with characters in horror movies starting around the 90's onward? If you look at movies before that there would one jackhole in the group but everyone else would be pretty normal and when they were being killed you actually cared (most of the time).
    Now they're all jackholes and you WANT them to die, when they're not bland and generic.
    It's like modern horror movie makers want you to root against the characters and for the killer or something.

    • @miraprime474
      @miraprime474 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +Chris McWilliams Laziness happened. Most horror movies these days have plug and play characters in generic stories with one or two differences.

    • @LibraGamesUnlimited
      @LibraGamesUnlimited 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Pop Culture Primer Yeah, a lot of it comes off like Mad Libs where you just change the names of the characters.
      I also really hate how they try and give the killer a sympathetic back story which only serves to demystify them (killing the suspense) and, again, tries to make you root for them against the victims, which is all backwards.

  • @nilswaage7626
    @nilswaage7626 9 ปีที่แล้ว +44

    The usage of "In the Hall of the Mountain King" IS actually fitting for a chase scene. The lyrics go (from memory here):
    Slaughter him! (A/The) Christian man's son has befouled/led astray the Mountain King's daughter!
    Then it goes into details about how they're going skin him alive and how to best prepare his flesh for eating.
    I guess it's been used for comedic effect so many times now that that's how it's remembered, so of course that would make it a poor choice for international audiences. Plus, it's hardly the reason the director chose it. If it was a slower opening "Morning Mood" would probably have been used. Because Grieg.
    I didn't really like this movie, to be honest. Just supplying that little tidbit of trivia.

The car crashes and they both lose an arm... Which paramedics accidentally switch upon attempting to reattach. So now the guy has a zombie arm that helps him sense where the general is and vice versa. The Nazis aren't tied to the gold after all, and venture forth to conquer the known world, so the MC discovers the story of the only Russian unit that ever stopped them, using the General's reanimation powers in the arm to raise them for a final showdown...
      There's more, and a lot of crazy scenes. It's great fun!

    Good review as always. To answer your question about the use of In the Hall of the Mountain King. The only thing I can think of is that it is either public domain and they didn't feel like spending any real money OR (more likely the case) they are pointing out that Wagner, composer to the tune, was known to be one of Hitler's favorite composers. With Norway's past being mired in both Nazi and Eastern Block Soviet culture, this could likely be the culprit. I think it may be an in-joke.

    • @DracoAries
      @DracoAries 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Dalepatrick Frost Wagner didn't make "In the Hall of the Mountain King", Edvard Grieg did. And the main reason it was used in the movie is most likely because it's one of the most famous Norwegian pieces of music, and we like to use it in our movies. Like, 80% of our movies include it, we're insanely addicted to it.

    I usually agree with your criticism on movies, but no matter how many times I rewatch this review I could never get on the same page with the critique. I haven't watched the movie myself, so the parts where you say it's boring I'd go by your word, but a lot of the clips that you showed I found to be written in a quirky way that maybe isn't "logical" but really unexpected and funny. Unlike movies like the Quarantine or Chain Letter, that consider themselves serious and you pick apart at their "seriousness" with areas where they were goofy or nonsensical. This movie from I can tell from the clips shown was intentionally goofy and seeing you critique strange or illogical moments like them splitting up for no reason or the whole suffocating thing, it just feels like you're criticizing a joke for not being serious. I've watched all of your reviews multiple times and this is the only one where I think your judgment of the film is a bit off. I do like some of your comedic reactions though like saying "and that is not an answer to that question" to "I've been busy" although I'm pretty sure the guy finding a fully functional machine gun without a reasonable explanation was the joke.

      I watch all of the Channel Awesome people, and only Phelous and NC seem to go into total arbitrary mode with their criticisms every so often. I still enjoy both, but some episodes just don't make any sense. At least when I disagree with Brad, Lupa, Linkara, ect. I can understand their point of view, not always with Phelous or Nostalgia Critic. Some of their reviews are just arbitrary as hell, this conclusions and critiques that have no leg to stand on.
      I personally think he misjudged Jeepers Creepers and to a much lesser extent, Triangle as well. Though I am still working my way through his library.

      To be honest the movie isn't great for anyone who don't understand Norwegian. Don't get me wrong, the movie is terrible but that's kind of the point. The dub ruins a good part of the movie because most jokes don't translate well into English, as dumb as that sounds. Also you're 100% right about the part where you mentioned that this movie doesn't take itself serious, it's more of a goofy comedy than a "horror" flick.

    I love that film. It's shamelessly silly and gorey. It could be funnier and needs more undead.
    But it's awesome and unique.
    Awesome zombies. They're fast and credible.
    Dead Snow 2 is sillier.
    The transformed survivor can summon undead. And it ends up with him summoning Soviets. It's hilarious. It turns into Soviet zombies versus Nazi Zombies.

    Dead Snow, is weird for a title. Snow of the Dead would work better because they are dead in the snow. If that makes sense.
    They seem to be nazis that are Zombies. Decorating kinda works if they are nazis that happen to be zombies. If that makes sense
    Machine gun maybe from the lair? Not sure why not show it if that was the case.
