If you can rick playing TAA rwb so could you Palmer. I think Palmer and Saka would play well together on that wing. Drop Foden and play Bowen on the left
He finally has a chance to let Trent maraud up and down the right side with actual defensive cover-the thing he's always needed-and he's passing it up. England might as well have Berhalter.

Do please give us exactly what experience you have to NOT play the only English defender to be nominated (NOT once, but twice) in the last decade for the Ballon D'or. This I have to see. Palmer is NOT half the player Trent is. He IS the only game winner England have in the way that HE only can unlock along with Bellingham, any defence. You see Trent is THE best person to complete passes and crosses, of the ball from anywhere on the pitch in the world currently, so Kane, and eveyrone else should be able to get on his crosses better then any defender. Simple logic really.

Whilst I agree wholeheartedly, a Trippier at right back is much much better than a Trippier at left back, it's progress, but we'd be silly to expect Gareth to drop his whole defensively boring approach.

@Thomas...191 Southgate could do right by playing the best players for certain positions. Trent is better than Trippier at rb. Bellingham and Foden both want to play #10, well there isn't 2 #10 positions, so pick who you think is better and get a winger on the left. Players are having a shocker, bench them for the next game and play someone else. It isn't that difficult
Trent plays in a club team that actually plays attacking football, look at the options he has in front of him for Liverpool, it would work for England too of kane didn't drop so deep and the team actually played attacking football.
Southgate is spectacular at wasting tallent with England and Aren't is the best example of this
One thing that worries me more than Southgate not changing the formation is Southgate changing the formation. A shrewd manager does this and it is called tactics; with Southgate doing it it is called an experiment.
I just saw the 2 best teams go up against eachother yesterday in Spain & Germany.
Neither team changed their shape to counter the other team.
And here we are with the best squad on players in the tournament changing our complete Shape & going even more defensive to counteract….

I’m not being biased but everyone should agree here. Not starting one of the best if not the best attacking rb in football TAA and choosing a washed trippier is absolutely fucked.

I would start Trippier as he's better defensively, and then bring on Trent after 60/70 mins.
Trippier isn't washed, just playing on the wrong side for the best of the team.
He's not as good as Trent offensively, but he's better defensively. In a back 3 i'd choose Trent though

With Walker next to Trent and Rice in front, Trent shouldn't even be needed to defend (although defensively Trent had better stats than Walker & Tripper anyway this season). But let's regurgitate what the British press spouts every week.
Trent would get in any team Spain, France, Italy, Brazil it's a joke he isn't utilised. Same with Palmer.

Because Southgate doesn’t have a clue and will opt for the less favourable choices when it comes to making player selections for England. If England are somehow to end up unsuccessful with the result, it may be down to player performance but it’s more than likely going to be down to Southgate’s ineptitude….

Saka and Trent... That's attacking. Trippier and Saka, that's being more defensive for a team that has struggled to create chances.

Switzerland when they get possession have 2 Wingers who will charge down the wings. So either our Wing Backs have to defend too much or our Centre Backs cover across and leave the centre exposed.

I hope no player will be blamed for not doing well in their new roles at this stage of the tournament. Personally, I think players play better when they can easily anticipate what their playmates will do when in possession of the ball.
There's nothing radical about Southgate, he'll play the same bunch in a different formation nothing more, the fact Trippier will start ahead of Arnold at RWB is scandalous and shows clearly how scared he is.

so let me get this straight....the whole issue with england right now is players are not comfortable in roles they havent played at club level, and instead of trying this out before the euros or in the group game he tests it out on a team that is one of the best in the tournament right now? this is a stupid gamble worse than before because the players are not used to it....he hasnt got a bloody clue.

With Kane there is no hope. These formations are either 3 4 3 1 or 5 4 3 1 then there either camped defensively or attacking properly but I fear Kane will nullify it and won't be taken off to make it work. Tony or Watkins would suit it better. Will the necessity to squeeze Foden in this team despite him never fitting in win us the tournament or make us fail like he did on all his previous outings with England. Hopefully we make it to the next stage. Hopefully we win it. But we must use our subs

I think it now all comes down to commitment. If the players feel unsure of the formation or where and what they should be doing, they may not give it their all. They have to accept and commit to it all or face going home tonight. Two no.10s may cause chaos, but chaos in the final third is a good thing, so long as there are teammates in and around the box and balls get there. One ball after another into the box, time and again. No more endless passing sideways or back and back again.

In paper it's 3-4-3 or whatever, but during the game it can be anything from 3-5-2, to 3-6-1 to 4-5-1 and back to 5-4-1.
This is the last game Southgate will get to be more fearless and experiment. Show some spine.

For the group of players he picked for England they don't make sense for his formation especially at a major tournament round , instead of using Trent at wing back a player who can hit pin point crosses , he picks someone else a player who hasn't played much football and who has not had the best of games , then he puts a winger at left wing back, does he want to win these games , square pegs in round holes , but the worst thing is he is so defensive, he's going to play counter attacking football, he will still play 2 defensive midfielders, which takes away from our attack , our players are going to be so tired towards the end , I predict a England loss , because of his defensive tactics if we go a goal down he wont know how to turn it into an attacking formation and tactics he will hope we are lucky again
