- Shadow is one of the most popular (and coolest) characters in the Sonic series, but many fans feel like he has been misrepresented over the last few years. In this video, I discuss Shadow's characterization over the years, and why I think things are looking up for the character.

Food for thought: If it is true that Flynn is head writer of Shadow Generations, then this will be the first time Flynn writes Shadow as just...Shadow. No ancillary Archie lore, no harsh guidelines that limit his role in the IDW story, just a game-Shadow-centric narrative.

In all seriousness tho, yeah. They really nailed his character first try. Even after all that bad stuff, that simply doesn't go away. Kids are still growing up watching Sonic X or playing SA2 on Steam. And a good portion of the Sonic fan base grew up in the 2000s, so lotsa folks are still attached, I think. Word gets around.
In December of 2022 I beat Shadow's debut game SA2, for the first time in my life, (on an old console, not the PC port) and for some unknown reason I've been a big fan of him since then. I've been seeing what he behaves like in that game and have been doing online research about what he was like in Heroes, and 06, and I want that better version of him to return. Which makes me glad that when I saw the trailer of Sonic x Shadow generations I heard the fact that the story in it will have him be going through his past. I got into thinking that Sega may have finally understood that what they did to his personality was a BIG mistake and that they are trying to bring that better version of him back!. Same with Sonic Prime from him acting in that series like a smart older brother to Sonic instead of like an evil edgeloard from what I've been able to see of it so far.(not all of the episodes yet) I'm super hyped for the third movie, and became very pleased from hearing the draft of the Crush 40 Live and learn song in the title trailer. After discovering a confirmation from the lead singer that he signed a deal that Paramount can have the rights to that song I got thrilled because it's currently my #1 favorite song and I've been 1 of the multiple fans who SOO strongly want it to be in that movie, especially during the final battle scene when it should be playing at. I really hope we see the better version of Shadow in that movie instead of him being shown as an annoying gun shooting and swearing edgeloard!
I really really really wish there were a lot more things to see of Sonic, his friends and others after how long it has been. The great old times of seeing them and playing as other characters besides Sonic.
It really looks like they're pivoting back into this direction with stuff like Frontiers Final Horizon, the comics, and Shadow Generations.
Here's hoping they keep it up! Fingers crossed!

The Steam description sort of alludes to the same thing, but I very specifically remember seeing the exact "fulfilling a promise to an old friend" wording somewhere else.

Hopefully it stays like this. Big spikes in viewership are always kinda worrying, cuz there's always the chance it'll just suddenly stagnate for whatever reason.
I don't like that Shadow is not using guns in recent media! And I 100% disagree with anyone who says he should not be using guns! He is a gun and close combat master he should be using his skills.
Wonder if they'll bring back guns (probably not)

The more time passes, the more the idea of Shadow using guns becomes kiinda cool rather than ridiculous to me.
Still, when you really think about it, it was one of those tryhard moves from Shadow '05 that really weren't all that necessary. Especially when you think about Shadow's powerset and how he has pretty much no need for a gun considering all he can do.
I'd be happy with the very occasional small callback, but I don't think bringing the guns back fully would do much good for the character

Doesn't look like there'll be any huge moments or major fan service like the end of Movie 2 or anything. But it seems like a fun ride. I'll probably end up enjoying it more than Sonic Prime lol

Bro chill out. It's mostly to differentiate Shadow The Hedgehog (the character) from Shadow The Hedgehog (the video game). Pretty sure I'm not the first one to come up with this name.
There are probably better ways to do this? Most likely, yeah. Is it that big of a deal? No, not really. Sorry if it bothers you so much

Sonic Prime is lame and needs to end already! Watched much more of it that I care to confess! And Shadow is not himself at all in it!
