Only issue I have with leather conditioners is that most auto leathers have a clearcoat so it’s useless for a conditioner since it won’t penetrate the clearcoat. Also most conditioners leave a shine or sheen and new clean leather is totally matte with no shine.

That’s true to a point. Even though some people say the leather is “clear coated” it’s still porous. The coating is simply a protective layer (also it’s a polymer plastic layer) so the color doesn’t run or fade. Leather “conditioners” are not what they used to be also, they are formulated for automotive “leather” and plastics to help protect from UV and help keep the porous surface from drying out. All plastics in the interior have a “coating” but it will always need some sort of protection and hydration. I know there is a lot of misinformation out there on this subject, but it’s really not complicated. Detailing companies do market these products strangely though, which leads to the confusion. Thanks. These products can be used for any leather type either coated or not. Even coated leather and vinyl is porous and can always use some sort of conditioning.

So these conditioners will work on the artificial leathers? I bought a new 2018 Mini Cooper with artificial leather and I’m worried about longevity. I assume these are coated vinyl. I know that as the plasticizers dissipate out vinyl will dry out and crack over time. Plasticizers have been greatly improved over the years, but I haven’t owned any autos with synthetic leather(ie vinyl) so I am concerned. Do you think conditioners will improve longevity if used regularly? I assumed it would just wipe off on my clothes.

Good question. All plastics, vinyl, leather wether coated or not are still porous and need some sort of conditioning. So these Procter’s work great

I also use 303 Aerospace Protectant it is perfect for all types of vinyl, leather and plastics also. It’s a UV Protectant and will help with fading and drying out.
Because those surfaces are porous the products will absorb into them and then you lightly wipe off any excess. Nothing will come off on cloths.
