  • www.Heart-Valve-Surgery.com - Now, more than ever, leading cardiac surgeons are using new techniques to help patients keep their own heart valve tissue when treating aortic stenosis (a narrow valve) and aortic regurgitation (a leaky valve).
    To explore the advantages of these new and/or modified approaches to aortic valve reconstruction, we interviewed Dr. Chris Malaisrie, Professor of Cardiac Surgery at Northwestern Medicine in Chicago, Illinois. During his extraordinary career, Dr. Malaisrie has performed thousands of aortic valve repair and aortic valve replacement operations.
    Important patient questions addressed by Dr. Malaisrie in this video include:
    1. What are the patient benefits of aortic valve repair compared to aortic valve replacement? Durability? Blood thinner use (anticoagulants, Coumadin, warfarin)? Infection?
    2. What is aortic valve regurgitation (a leaking aortic valve)? What does aortic valve prolapse look like?
    3. What surgical techniques can Dr. Malaisrie use to repair an aortic valve? Free margin plication? Prolapse resection? Aortic valve annuloplasty?
    4. What should patients know about the history of the Ross Procedure? Why has the Ross Procedure become such a busy part of Dr. Malaisrie's practice? What are the main Ross Procedure benefits specific to infective endocarditis, thromboembolism, anticoagulation and durability?
    5. What should patients know about the association of aortic valve disease and aortic aneurysms?
    6. How is Dr. Malaisrie using "valve-sparing" aortic root replacement techniques to help patients keep their own aortic valve tissue while replacing an aortic root aneurysm?

    Is this an open heart procedure?

      Hi John, Great question. Yes, from what we know, each of the aortic valve reconstruction procedures referenced in this video - aortic valve repair, the Ross Procedure, and valve-sparing aortic root replacement - are performed using open-heart (sternotomy) approaches. Hope that helps!!!

      @@HeartValveSurgery not for me, then. I had a four way bypass open heart surgery ten years ago. It took me over a year to recover. Since then, I have had three clips in my mitral valve with no problems. If I need my aortic valve replaced, I’ll probably go for a TAVR.

    What should I ask my cardiologist to see if I’m eligible with a bicuspid aortic valve? 😊

      @HeartValveSurgery  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Scott, The key question to ask your doctor is what type of disease you have associated with your bicuspid aortic valve. Is it aortic stenosis (narrow)? Or, is it aortic regurgitation (leaking)? Or, is it both stenosis and regurgitation. If your bicuspid aortic valve is regurgitant then you have a much better chance of getting an aortic valve repair of a valve-sparing aortic root replacement (if you have an aneurysm). Make sense? We hope that helps!!!

    • @Scott31510

      Mine is regurgitant so this is very helpful. I am 48 but do not want an artificial valve if possible. 😊

      @@Scott31510 Thumbs-up! That's good news. The next step is to find a heart surgeon that specializes in aortic valve repair for bicuspid aortic valves. You got this!
