Psycho is and always will be my favorite horror film of all time. What makes me love it, is the ending when Norman stares at the camera and slowly turns that face into a smile. Its so twisted , and didn't involve any blood or guts, just truly cinematic art. The best !

MICHAEL AND JESSICA..... This video deserves an award. The information, scene lineup's and time that was taken is amazing. I lived in Arizona for 15 year's and didn't know I was walking those same streets where the movie was filmed. You both are awesome and would like to see your channel continue to grow in viewership and contributions.

I so totally echo Dan "The Breaking News Man". "Psycho" has been a fascination of mine since - believe it or not - the release of "Jaws". And that is because the audience reaction to "Jaws" was compared to that of "Psycho", so naturally it got me curious (I was 15 when "Jaws" was released). I must have been a Pioneer in the "Psycho" fascination category, cause in just a few years a sequel was announced (and Part II is very good btw), and a book on the making of the film would be released around 1989 I believe. I don't know whether to yell "Spoiler" - but one of the most fascinating things I learned about the making of the movie was this: It was well known that Perkins was in New York rehearsing for a play when the shower scene was filmed. It wasn't until just before the book was published that we learned that the person who doubled for Perkins........was a woman. Now why tell you all this? Because this video is proof to me there were STILL things to learn about the making of a movie that nobody associated with the film could ever have predicted 62 years ago. To them, this was just a small budget high-quality quickly-made film that they didn't think would make movie history. I think even the makers of the movie would have been blown away by the thought, research, and execution of this video. I don't know what else to say other than "OMG Michael and Jessica. Great Job!!!"

I'm a big scary movie watcher. Nothing scares me so far of movies. But when I was a teen and watched "Psycho" I had a hard time going in the shower as we had a shower curtain. I was happy when you could get glass doors. hehe....I super love all your video's. I'm trying to get thru them all and be caught up. Your video's are amazing!!! Love you guys!

I just finished watching the documentary The making of Psycho. Thanks so much for this presentation. You are always so spot on. I love the nostalgia. I'm actually happy the old hotel or building is still in Phoenix for the opening shot. I need to see that someday. 1959 and 1960 were so much more of a simpler time in America. Always relish it.

Alfred Hitchcock was born 13 years before Arizona became a state! While "Psycho" was released in 1960, most of the filming was done in 1959. This was a great video---you really did some investigating!

Ha, I've been on that tram tour back in the early 80s. The house was incredibly eerie. We were just out of high school and we were hitting all the hot spots,Universal studios,Hollywood sign, wax museum, Disneyland, Knottsberry Farm, everything. We even made it to Burbank and were in the audience for a game show "can't remember the name". We also went and made it to the tonight show. Greatest vacation ever. Thanks so much for your hard work making this video. Brings back great memories.😉

You are absolutely the best with these little wonderful video trips. You do your homework. Yes that Psycho house still gives me the creeps..when I was seven in 1964 I stayed up late with my mom who feel asleep about 11pm. I stayed up and started to watch a movie on my mom's portable TV. As I began to watch this harmless story about a nice lady a cop following her I was the king of late night kids staying up late award! Then came the shower scene. Wow nudity! My mom still deep in sleep. Then came the figure. Then the knife. The music. The horror. I hid under covers. Then the staircase scene. After weeks of nightmares my parents search the TV guide an were aghast! "Billy watch Psycho". It took me fifty years to watch it again with my 13 year old son who loved it!! Just thought I'd share it because you share so much with us. Thanks. Love you guys.

At 4:08, you have the right building, the right floor, but clearly the wrong window. From left to right, it had to be either the 5th or 13th window. Here's why I say that:
    1) At 3:43, you can briefly see in the bottom left corner that the shot doesn't start at the left edge of the building so there must be at least two windows off screen to the left. The first window being shown on that floor at 3:43 (two to the left of the zoomed in window) must either be the 3rd or 11th window.
    2) That wall protrusion on the left side of the screen at 3:43 is narrow, as is the next protrusion directly to the left of the window the camera zooms in on. This means that if the actual window they zoomed in on was on the left side of the building, it can only be the 5th window. And if the actual window they zoomed in on was on the right side of the building, it can only be the 13th.
    3) The overhang directly above the windows on that floor is straight except above windows 7 and 8, where it protrudes out along with the facing of the building. In the movie, the overhang is smooth to the right and left of the zoomed in window, ruling out the 9th window, which has the protruding overhang to the left above the 8th window.
    4) Lastly, it can't be the 9th window as you claim because the protrusion (where the 7th and 8th windows are located) is wide. Not narrow like in the movie. Therefore, it can only be the 5th or 13th window. But which one of those two, we may never know for sure. Not sure if I explained this well because I'm not familiar with architectural terms. Great video though. Enjoyed it a lot.

    Interesting Fact:
Bernard Hermann was the composer who wrote the score for Psycho and what set him apart from his contemporaries in 1960, is that he demonstrated through the famous “Psycho Suite” that one didn’t need a complete orchestra (woodwinds, brass, percussion, strings, etc) to create a score which was the common belief and practice.
He relied on strings ONLY and it was very effective thus becoming one of the most famous film scores in history of cinema.
Also Hitchcock’s wife often assisted her famous husband with some of the film editing. When they reviewed the shower scene with the close-up of Janet Leigh’s eye, she discovered that Leigh’s eye was following the camera slightly which would have ruined the illusion of her character being dead, so they had to re-shoot the scene being sure her eye remained perfectly still.

    • @RD3D-1
      @RD3D-1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It was Herrmann's intention to "complement the black-and-white photography with a black-and-white score", according to his biographer Steven Smith.
      Reference: www.npr.org/2000/10/30/1113215/bernard-herrmanns-score-to-psycho
Out of the 26 takes of the camera moving away from Janet Leigh's eye, they deemed only 1 to be usable; and in that one, they discovered after production she took a breath. In covering it they needed to cut away to the shower head.

This was FANTASTIC... the best video of it's kind I've yet seen. I particularly liked your use of B&W (oh, how I miss it), along with Bernard Herrmann's incredible, haunting score. Kudos!
Btw, I had ALWAYS thought that those dry, empty hills in "Psycho" looked a lot like Gorman (which I learned from you that they were), that I would always pass by on my way to Frazier Park, a beautiful, pine tree-filled mountain area just north of there where John Schneider of "Dukes of Hazzard" now lives. I've never seen hills that like look like these, as barren as the moon.

I was in Rome in 2013 and made a point of checking out all the areas used in William Wyler's 'Roman Holiday' starring Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck, 60 years earlier in 1953. I'm curious if the owners of the current dealership even knew they were a shooting location for "Psycho"? Your use of Hermann's brilliant score reminds us of just how essential his music is to Hitchcock's films. Your future visit to SF should be interesting for "Vertigo." Sooo many locations for that movie are still around. Great stuff!

I went to visit the apartment from Vertigo in SF. It has been completely remodeled and a high wall is around the property now. I heard the owners got tired of people taking photos.

In one of them, as they are showing the dealership, you can see lots of people in the background taking pictures also

Another fantastic video, i can only imagine the amount of research that goes into finding these long forgotten filming locations, however they might be forgotten to most people but not to people like me, you and your subs who love all the old horror movies, I'm 56 now, and i never get bored with watching them over again. all those iconic scenes are still as fresh to me as they were when i first saw those movies. Keep doing what you're doing, you're making an old horror fan very happy👍👍🇬🇧🇺🇸
