    Fair to note that Ed had a very odd sense of time by his own admission, he heard grooves differently than most people. He had trouble coming in on 1 in some songs at least early on, you may note that Ed started a lot of songs and Al would follow. Al understood what Ed was hearing. You actually hear odd hesitations in quite a few Van Halen tunes. I get the feeling thats the same reason the classic van Halen riffs are so unique, other worldly and ground breaking.

      @@dougsteeleguitar this is just an incredibly difficult rhythm shuffle picking lick and I just wanna say thanks for this lesson. So many TH-cam lessons on this song but nobody explains how to really breakdown the practice to build it up to speed. Amazing how such a " simple looking " riff can be so difficult. I stumbled across Phil X’s “Nobody swings like the king” video about a month ago and as soon as he said no one can nail the feel like Eddie I had a Barney Stinson “Challenge Accepted” moment and I’ve been practicing that intro riff RELIGIOUSLY every night since. It takes time but you get there, I’m still not there quite yet either but I’m enjoying the process of developing killer swing feel at high tempos

    • @Anthony-nk4ky
      @Anthony-nk4ky 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Itelkner I think that’s a key part man, you have to stay at a slow speed for a long time to really ingrain that feel. I played along to the isolated guitar track at half speed for like a two weeks before I moved up. Now I’m pretty comfortable at like 90% speed.

    • @Itelkner
      @Itelkner 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Anthony-nk4ky Those are great suggestions. Phil might be right about nobody, except Eddie, ever really being able to fully 'get there.' It's still worth the effort though. I'm getting the feeling already that learning to master a high speed boogie riff with a swing feel has a great transfer effect on other parts of playing.

      @@Itelkner Even Eddie didn't quite "have it" back in the early days. Let me clarify: of course he "had it", but it wasn't as perfect as the studio and from 78 onwards. They played it slower, and his swing was less "groovy." Look up "I'm The One 1976 Van Halen" on TH-cam. By the time the studio recording came around he had completely mastered it, but it took years of playing! All a matter of time, practice, and effort!

    Alex and Ed heard their Dad, Jan playing swing (jazz) in the house. Alex was sitting in with Jan as soon as he was able to hold the groove. My theory is Jan is the real reason both Alex and Ed swing so hard; from playing polkas and jazz standards in gigs with him and from hearing his records all the time. This engrained into Alex who would groove like that forcing Ed to immitate that feel. One principle reason as a band they shuffle and boogie so hard. It was constantly around them growing up. If anyone here has been around jazz musicians long enough.... their sense of time is passed along.

    It's crazy man. Been playing Eddie stuff for 40 some-odd years now and I still struggle with this one. I always thought it was straight 3/3 time. I can play the lead no problem, but the rhythm is still a bitch. Back in the day we didn't have tutorials or even the ability to isolate guitar tracks the way kids can now. Even I enjoy listening to all of Ed's isolated guitar tracks on YT. You hear things you never heard before and you also get a new perception on how "loose" yet so technical; his style was. He was very loose, even to the point of sounding like a mistake, yet he was so good he could just pull it off. No ultra- precision. Just "feel" and whatever rule-book he wanted to play by. Once you get a chance to really listen a lot to his isolated stuff, and his total LACK OF DESIRE to overdub much, if anything at all. It's so cool to hear him go from Rhythm to Lead whenever he wanted without any rhythm guitarist to fill that gap. He didn't need one because seemingly, between Him and his brother, they filled ALL of the spaces. A rhythm guitar would have just been a distraction for the band. I suppose that's why the keyboard only works to a point, which is in "Jump" (their very firs HIT single).... Ed did overdub some of his lead guitar with deep delay/reverb/flanger mixes, but you never really hear him play actual rhythm behind one of his leads in the studio. I'm so glad their producer wasn't the type of guy to try to make Van Halen play 'perfect' because even the timing in most of their songs speeds up AND slows down, just like it does when they play live. Eddie rushes some of his leads and then slows them down when you listen to his isolated tracks. I'm guessing this is because he is playing off of Al's timing... and Al surely is NOT using a click track. I think a huge percentage of what Ed did (as far as lead guitar) on their first album was mostly 'spontaneous' ~ like 'first takes' and I think "Eruption" was something the producer pieced together in the studio from a hundred takes of Eddie just shredding and "noodling" around....

    If you haven't seen the Phil X vid NO ONE SWINGS LIKE THE KING, then you are missing out. He plays this and talks about the swing factor. His solo work is SICK. I've seen his vids since he started posting on AdTube, and this display of fretboard acrobatics is unreal. It's Jake E Lee level. I had been so sick of Eddie's squeals, taps, and Floyd dives that I never listened to it. I was 15 when I started playing. The year was 1985 and the gunslingers were polished. I loved VH, no question. The DLR era is right there with Zeppelin, The Eagles, Pink Floyd, The Stones, and of course, Poison. 😁 However, all the squeals and tapping were getting old. When I heard the Hot For Teacher solo and it's 99% trick free fretboard assault, I loved it. They are few and far between. When he died, it hit me so hard. I felt like I'd been disrespectful. I realized he was one of only a few game changers. Hendrix, Randy, Eddie, Yngwie, and SRV. None of their colleagues could do what they were doin at the time. Phil X does this tune justice. He has turned into a SERIOUS rock n roller. Check it out.

    As much as you don't want to be technical on this, there is a big distinction to be made between swing and shuffle....this isn't a lazy swing, it's the other way; AVH's power shuffle with EVH playing quarter note triplets with the notes landing on the 1 and 3 of the triplets. It sounds like a swing, I get that, but it's pushing rather than pulling the beat.

      The best way I can describe the swing feel, which I had to once to someone, it is the "pimp walk" of music. Ever see a pimp walk with that swagger? That is the swing feel. They laughed, and once I put it like that, they got it.

    here is my opinion,...... you and Phil X want to use the word swing cause what the riff is doing...... well its very close to the swing feel....... however its not swing....... its just another Eddie original riff........ the masters hand.......... and what Eddie is doing is bouncing off the LH thumb at 5th fret 6th string with the open 5th string .......... thats how he gets the super fast double notes cleanly (its always 3 notes, but 2 always are so fast together, not possible to re-produce staying on open A only) ............ and simply put not how Eddie is playing it.......and with that type swing pattern feel ........... which really is more like the very intro to Mean Street ....... which is a specific number of notes with a riff feel, or movement repeated .......... this is Eddie's genius....... making Eddie a unique impossible to nail down too a specific time signature style player .......... i have been playing 41 years now...... i grew up also learning to EVH ......... now Eddie is gone i am back at re-learning him note for note .......... i will make video's soon ......... i have to get the video camera up and running ........ i got a old school DV 8 ccd ......... but reason i backed off from playing Eddies stuff years ago was to hone my sound away from VH best i can ............ i think we all have some VH in us and always will Eddie paved the way for us all .............. I play a Gibson V now ............. but still have my own hand made Strat to do Eddie style ....... this is me on guitar in this band ........................ th-cam.com/channels/NASx0WPmsGdjHDq5M9HeJg.html
