      @@GregSummersMusic weird comment bc this is honestly a great vid analysis. I've been kind of working at this riff for a year and a half and still can't make it swing/gallop without a lot of effort and tension. You need to get to a high level of alternate picking with ease. It's one thing to play fast notes cleanly, and another level of skill is to put a groove onto it.

      @@guyincognito320 I'm sure you've probably seen this, but watching Jacob's fluidity, looseness and just getting into the song vs. trying too hard is what has really helped me to finally get it. th-cam.com/video/pA4ko8Qf0-s/w-d-xo.html

    Hey man, thanks for watching my video! Yeah like Jeff Rupert said below, its kinda impossible to REALLY play EVH stuff to a click... its near sacrilege! Maybe we can all work together to further decode the greatness of EVH. Cheers.

    • @GregSummersMusic
      @GregSummersMusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Ben! I sure hope that this video didn’t come across negatively (I’m sure it may seem this way). By no means did I want to portray that you weren’t playing it correctly. Yes the click makes perfect sense. You provide a great service to the community and we all look up to the efforts you put in. I’m sure you can appreciate what it takes to build the channel in the beginning organically...which is near impossible. Keep doing great work. Your transcriptions are spot on and I’m sure you play it like him without the click. Teaching is tough for sure.

      @@GregSummersMusic no offense taken at all! The depth of Eddie's swing is the real deal, that's whats so hard to nail. I think i play it almost like a triplet feel, where my down is on "TRI" and my up is on "LET", and the way Eddie plays is more like sextuplet-based. playing the first and last notes of a sextuplet, so that upstroke is coming that much later in each beat. At the insane speed of this tune, feeling that subdivision is absolutely ridiculous, but that's the magic of the VH brothers!

    • @GregSummersMusic
      @GregSummersMusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ben Eller yep I think you are right. Honestly I’m not very good at tackling most of their other stuff with the swing feel. It’s very hard for me and some solos are very unscripted like hot for teacher. Get up is another one that comes to mind.

  • @TisTheDamnStickSeason

    It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing. So many covers of this song don't swing enough. You nailed it.

    I read somewhere that a reporter pressed Ed to explain his influence, and he said "I gave rock a shot in the arm". Considering it was 1978, he sure did. This tune is far more bad ass than even Eruption. I like your tone in this video!

    • @jimmyboy131
      @jimmyboy131 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good point about Eruption. If anyone ever asks me what a good VH song to introduce themselves to the band I would point them to I'm The One, not Eruption.

  • @jarupert
    @jarupert 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Here’s another issue with the feel....when I did the backing track for Ben, I did it to a click. That is something EVH didn’t do, as his BPM varied on the record by 4-5 BPM. Ben and I conceded to doing it this way for simplicity’s sake, but your “feel” comment is spot on. Keep up the good work!

    • @GregSummersMusic
      @GregSummersMusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I hope I was able to add to Ben’s video rather than detract. He does awesome work. I just watched an old VH interview and they were talking about playing to a click (against it). They felt it was cheating in a sense...kind of like not playing their own parts. I can see his point although so many people do it in the studio today for various reasons...including myself. I can see where it can take away feel, though.

    • @jarupert
      @jarupert 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Greg Summers songs like I’m The One and Barroom Boogie by Y&T are perfect examples of no click, get the feel right. I mean tape warble could account for a couple of BPM, but I’m The One varies from 114 to 121 during the intro, for example. Hell, at the end of day, who cares! It is what makes you tap your foot (or bang your head, though I can’t anymore due to arthritis in my spine LOL) and listen to a song again and again.

    • @dohoeijmans2432
      @dohoeijmans2432 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ben had some more mistakes but who cares. If you learn it the Ben way you still will sound killer playing Im the One. Eddie messes around a little more so not every note in the same run is the exact same. If you slow the isolated guitartrack down you hear what I mean. Also im almost 100% sure that he should have doubled the run on the G string and not the B string in the thing he called the 'VH rubbish' lick.
      An example of a great player who has that Eddie feel down is Pete Thorn. He can do it!
      Both you and Ben keep up the good work!

    • @GregSummersMusic
      @GregSummersMusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dohoeijmans2432 Agreed! We are lucky to have so many resources out there to learn stuff and it doesn't really matter in the end how you play it, as long as you are playing. ;-)

    Great work - Greg!
    I started playing it in 1982 - but there was no way to get it done at that time even with an adjustable tape recorder. First time I heard it on the music fair in Frankfurt, from an Guitar Teacher and I was flashed. I am just wondering that you can skip from a differently accentuated playing this easy - for me it is more feeling the rythm....

    I think it's funny that Eddie said when he was preparing for the 2012 tour, that he had to find out how to play some of these older songs. He had forgotten how to play them, and ended up having to do what everyone else had to do to figure out how to play his songs!

  • @BladeJones
    @BladeJones 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    0:16 How the hell did anyone figure out how to play these parts back in the day? I guess you had to have a tape machine that could be slowed down to half speed.

    • @GregSummersMusic
      @GregSummersMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      TTT Prank Calls yea maybe. I was pretty good at rewinding or adjusting the record needle when I was younger. The old 4 track recorders helped as well, but yea similar things with vocal autotune as well. Singers back in the studio just had to sing in key ;-) now they can do their best and “we’ll fix it in post”

    I'm the One covers are *not* authentic w/out nailing this shuffle/swing, and those of us w/VH burned in the brain from '78 onwards know it, feel it. sense it, smell it. Great addition to all the I'm the One lessons elsewhere from Uncle Ben etc.
