the guy who taught me had a 25 year old mt it was like a razor!!! it had a bit of build up so i told him to soak it in bi carb over the weekend, as i like my trowels mint at all times! monday he came in and put a spread on and the heel of his trowel fell off 😂 the build up was actually keeping his trowel together.. he was fuming with me 🤣
My trowels are spotless, i give them a wet and dry almost every working day. It takes minutes! I have a bit of ocd when it come to looking after things i have paid for and rely on to earn my living. Every Job im on for more than a day i soak my buckets and throw in my hand board and bucket trowel in so they stay like new.. as a domestic spread i get work through being clean and tidy in peoples house.. i even have traveling foot wear and hoodie so that if I look at a job on the way home I present a nice clean image... The van even gets cleaned inside and out on a weekly basis... 😆
My trowels are as clean as the day they were bought , I have 2 water buckets 1 for washing the trowel and 1 for washing them after the first bucket no skin build up whatsoever clean trowel clean work
Just bought carbon steel trowel after watching your videos, used wet stone 400grit to 8000grit just to get the trowel started ready for skimming this week 👍
I usually leave my trowels in a tray of soapy water over the weekend and after a day or so sitting in the soapy water they rinse off like new,job done! 👍😉
Hey i had a question about some old trowels..so my dad passed away. He left behind a bunch of tools. Concrete and drywall trowels. Ive noticed that alot of the really older models/ vintage from like the late 90s early 2000s have a almost ring sound to them. Like they make a sheetmetal type of noise even with slightest touch and they finish really nice. My newer marshalltown and kraft trowels barely make any noise at all they almost feel like plastic when i tap on them because they dont make a lot of noise. I was thinking maybe a steel shank/ spine on the trowel was the cause but the spine has no rust at all so must be aluminum/magnesium idk. They just feel awesome and different. Maybe thats just what worn trowel feels like idk lol new as a concrete finisher barely on my first year lol
Sorry to hear your dad passed away. That’s terrible. Amazing to hear your following in the same trade as him. As far as the trowels. Difficult to say without seeing them. Can you send a picture of them to me on instagram. @Plastering_alexmorley and I’ll have a look. But generally speaking older tools are better as the quality of the construction tends to be better. I’d consider using them once you get some experience in the trade.
When I was in the game I accidentally found out that soaking them in Diluted Ribena for a few hours did the same job ... But that keeping a piece of angle grinder blade in your tool bucket was even better .... a quick wet swish at the end of the week was all it needed 👍😎
Soaking does work. You just gave it a quick scrub every now and then. It'll look brand new if you do that over a weekend. Hot water rinse will speed it up
Hey man , love your videos was just gonna ask I’ve just bought my first trowel and was wondering your opinion on it I’ve gone for the 14” permashape marshalltown as I kept hearing good things about it ?
Hi Mace it’s probably the best all round trowel, that will last you year to come. There are other trowels that give a better finish, but they have drawbacks to them such as being Carbon, etc.
I guess I'm looking that the people I've learned from always made sure their trowels were clean. Especially the handles, I can't stand dirty handles now. I tend to spend 5 minutes just giving them a quick clean, either when I'm packing or before I use them. I'm a bit ocd about that stuff though tbh as I feel how clean they are represent you.
@@AlexMorleyPlastering Yeah when i first started my handles were covered, gives you blisters and makes it slide all over. Wearing gloves seems to make this difficult too. I don't wear them anymore.
And if you don't have Bicarb' about & you but you have some diluted blackcurrant juice in the fridge, soak it for a few hours in some of that! .... Found out accidentally when I used my flask back in the day to take a cool drink to work ... Just a thought! :-)
Any plasterer worth his salt knows from beginning to serve his time how to keep his trowel clean. A bucket of clean water and a water brush .A trowel in this mess doesn't belong to a plasterer,it may belong to someone who has bought a toolbag and some tools and calls himself a plasterer. Is this a joke?

That literally stresses me out reading that message. Good on you for keeping up but maintenance though.
@@AlexMorleyPlastering imagine being my labourer 😆😆😆😆
I do the same as this. Keeping things clean only takes a little effort, but makes working so much easier.
@@AlexMorleyPlasteringme too ! I’m to lazy to work with that fella! 😂
This is how murderer's are born
I'm 15 years plastering. Look after your trowels spread 😉😆 top man x
White malt vinegar also works as it remover any rust which the limescale is stuck to. It ends up looking like it shed its skin by the morning lol
4 inch grinder and flap disc I use on my building trowels . On occasion my render trowel and hawk .
My trowels are as clean as the day they were bought , I have 2 water buckets 1 for washing the trowel and 1 for washing them after the first bucket no skin build up whatsoever clean trowel clean work
Have pride in your trowels! They are your money makers so always treat them with respect and keep them clean
That’s tru thay make you money so respect your kit

Your advice with the white vinegar really helped my carbon trowels
Does this work on Tile Adhesive?
I agree I use white Spirit vinegar and Bicarbonate of soda Soak for an hour then give a scrape with a scraper
Great tip Alex, gonna soak all my kit over Christmas 👍

My trowels like being covered in crap, they told me never to clean them. So I’ve always respected my trowel’s decision 🤷🏻♂️

Do you sprinkle more bicarb everytime you scrub the trowel mate ?
Bet your lass loves it when you use that for pots.

A peice off brick ,handfull off sand,a splash off water and rub, more water when required
Always maintain your weapon pal 💯🤙🤙
Good job Big A
A bit of broken breeze block does the trick too.
Nothing cleans a trowel like brick acid.

The Heat of my trowel while Spreading stops any Contaminants adhearing to it!!!!

Like it’s just outta the Furnace!
Dan Solo would use Lidls bicarbonate of soda! 😂😂

Totally agree with the handle. Can’t stand gear on the handle.
On the blade not so much.

Why dont you get a stainless steel trowel as they are easier to clean and dont rust
Rubbish I’ve been plastering 36yeats all my trowels are clean and do a lot of price work

It has to be rain water and it does work 100%
Sanding disc on a grinder done in 20 seconds
That info could have been told in less than a minute. I like the fact you carefully but in the soda.

I personally think it looks lazy and if I saw your trowel I'd be inspecting your work like a hawk
