Using the phrase “after schizophrenia” IS suggesting you do not have the condition anymore which is misleading because in theory based on the information you have shared if you stopped your keto diet then the symptoms would resume (indicating there is still an underlying condition).

I mean if you're taking the title literally that would be many peoples assumption. She never said she was cured or that its possible to cure it. Maybe she means it more in a metaphorical way because she's not experiencing symptoms with this treatment. Why not just let her be if she's happy and healthy. The issue remains that the new channel title implies that you no longer have a Schizophrenia Spectrum Illness/Disorder. For a population that frequently have issues with medical compliance, this is dangerous.
Two things can be true at once:
I can be cheering for your success with metabolic therapies, and can also hold strong concerns about the way you're now approaching discussion of the illness **you still have**. To imply that those with concerns are engaging in polarisation and black and white thinking is black and white itself - it doesn't acknowledge that many of us with strong concerns wish you well with the metabolic therapies you're engaged with, and hope for a future for you that remains free of the symptoms of Schizophrenia.

I think delving into the downside of keto is something that you have not entertained or really discussed. The experts you have referenced are all in one camp. It would, I think, be more well-rounded to reference other view points. There are some very real, well studied, scientifically based concerns with keto. I believe it is actually dangerous to not at least include the other side as part of this whole discussion. There will be pros and cons to all interventions, we should also discuss the cons.

You would think with the increasing popularity of keto and the millions of people around the world on the diet, we would hear lots on how sick people are getting while on the diet, yet there is very little indeed. The only thing I really hear is that it sometimes will raise LDL cholesterol quite a bit. But even in the most incriminating studies, high LDL cholesterol only has a 1.3 hazard ratio for heart disease. If I had a mental illness I could control by just changing my diet, even if there was a 30% chance of increasing heart disease I would for sure still do it just because of the betterment of quality of life.
Also, please remember when you see studies poo-pooing anything that people seem to find beneficial in some way, look to see who is funding the study and what motives they may have.

    • @Lauren-fj2dm
      @Lauren-fj2dm 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

@TravisBrickleKillZone Off the top of my head: I think that you could have a diet that is quite low carb (not in ketosis) and one that is keto (significant ketosis) and subjects would not know. THe researchers who are evaluating symptoms must not know who receives which diet. The subjects should be randomly placed in the keto arm or the non-keto arm. The ketone tests would need to be blinded.

    • @reinerschafer1708
      @reinerschafer1708 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@TravisBrickleKillZone Very difficult. the only possible way I see is locking people in a metabolic ward and feeding them prepared goo like or blended food that people would not be able to tell what the composition is. That would be an extremely expensive trial and seeing that a possible outcome would be that metabolic therapy is a viable treatment and people would need less medications, guess who is not going to fund that trial?
But trials don't have to be blinded to be viable and any trial looking at the benefits of being in ketosis have the added benefit of simple tests that determine if the participants are following the diet by measuring their ketone levels.

So, if someone didn’t get the same results from keto, it’s because they weren’t doing it right or didn’t have a keto coach? I admit, I owe you an apology.
I was jealous of your recovery and worried that you quitting meds was a dumb idea. But, after learning more about how psychiatry works here due to support groups that are led by former psychiatrists, and doing research in general, I'm starting to realize that the system really is fucked in general. Nobody knows exactly what they're doing: sometimes meds work, but sometimes you get the wrong med thrown at you because your psych is an idiot, or hurries the diagnosis.
After speaking to others, I'm starting to realize that no one has the one true answer. I used to think meds were the answer. Then I started thinking that metabolic therapy was the answer, and I was weak for not being willing to try it. Now, I'm starting to think the truth is in the middle, and that it depends on the person. It's a complicated issue for sure.
So, I apologize for being jealous and upset with you for getting to be off meds. I think it's good to have an open discourse about it *and* for both sides to not try to push meds/metabolic therapy on one another, or blame the other side of trying the opposite of what they're doing.
At the end of the day, all of us are trying to heal, and this infighting/division into hostile camps is just driving us more and more apart. And I admit that I've been guilty of this as well in the past.

As someone who has followed this channel for many years, I'm happy to listen to any changes you go through. The more voices and varied experiences we have from people who live with mental illnesses, the better off we are. You've found a method of management that currently works for you, and sharing that is very helpful even when your experience of managing symptoms is not the same as it may be for anyone else. I think the big take-away is that no one's symptoms and ability to manage symptoms is the same! You touched on that very well in this video.

Lauren, this video is so so good. You shared your thoughts and intentions with grace, clarity, and candor. The change in the name of your channel is up to you, and I agree that polarization is very rampant in this cultural moment. The change in your health is momentous and the name change may be provocative, but it also provokes hope that schizophrenia patients have possibilities that MIGHT work for them. Your channel is contrarian to the literally BILLIONS of dollars that the big pharmaceutical companies use to incentivize the medical and insurance industries. You are sharing the hope that has WORKED FOR YOU, and it inspires me to hope that some of what you have done may help my son. THANK YOU. You inspire us, give us hope, and are a unique, educated, and winsome voice that is desperately needed in the very dark world of mental illness for those who have SMI's and for those who care for them.

A Keto based diet has been a life saver for me personally.
What matters is also what you actually eat within that diet.
You can eat over processed meats and garbage, or you can eat avocados, good beef, chicken, fish, etc.
Doing this has given me more mental clarity, energy and far less pain.
Thank you for speaking on this and sharing your experiences, you have helped me understand alot of my own neurological differences over the last few years.

I think it’s just important to be very cautious about potentially encouraging people to try to go off meds when people with this condition are already inclined to stop medication and get very very sick. And the alternative that would allow someone to go off meds is this very strict diet that requires a lot of effort and executive function. I think as long as you are careful and thoughtful about your messaging, that’s what is important.

I am very happy for you and your ability for the metabolic changes and leaning to repair your mental health daily. At the start of this video, you address a name change for this (our) channel. My raw reaction was a kick in the gut and a little sadness. I felt this way because when I was diagnosed, scared, and seeking knowledge, you were here as a friendly face and a relief to know I wasn't alone and I was understood. I hope you do not rid the videos w explanations and guidance on this disorder. This site helped me to be able to have a conversation w family and friends that was packed full of support and answers that we all had. Many of those going through treatments of a multitude of mental challenges would not be able to do this treatments you have for various reasons mostly not have drs to be able w proper knowledge for treatment, lack of being able to do the amount of physical activity do to other heath concerns, diet is also tricky as you know but in just my case I can't eat red meats and low fat. It's frustrating even if I wanted to this it could be risky for other medical issues. From my point of view, I feel this makes me more broken that I don't qualify for this for change. I take so much medicine daily, and I hate it, but I'm kind of trapped. I just stress, please don't take off the very raw and educational videos, especially in the earliest of times. If i showed some of the newest videos to family and friends now 100% they would say see its easy to get over this just do what she does. (Not realistic) this would cause me more harm they good. Hope you understand my point of view? I do wish you a continued life of good health. Thank you

I think something that should be reflected upon is that there are many conditions physical and mental that can go into remission but aren't "cured" so to speak. For instance, eating disorders are often thought to not be "cured" or people with cancer. Often, when they go into remission, they still have a proclivity for the cancer to come back. So they don't give up on preventative measures like a yearly CT. Similar to how it is probably recommended that you still see a psychiatrist or therapist while in remission to avoid symptoms to come back. I think you are so brave and graceful and vulnerable to be going through this change and sharing it with us.

It's not for any of us to say what you should and shouldn't do with your channel, it's *your* channel. But I've found your content very alienating recently, and the shift to talking almost exclusively about keto has been kind of bizarre. Personally I don't understand how someone can go from having repeated, severe episodes, to it all being fixed with diet. I would understand if you'd had one episode and they never returned, or that your episodes were induced by something other than schizophrenia, but it's not as if keto is some big secret that big Pharma are keeping from us and you are shedding light on ancient secrets, but that's what it feels like watching the channel now. As I said, your channel, do what you want with it, but I know a lot of us in the schizophrenia community (going off the r/schizophrenia subreddit at least) feel like this isn't really a place where we can come for identification, advice or validation any more. In that respect, it's good you've changed the name of your channel, because this is not a channel about mental illness or for mentally ill people any more, it's a channel for a diet that lots of people with schizophrenia can't afford. Good luck with it, anyhow.

I just like having the extra choices and knowledge about treatments for mental illnesses, because I can't take meds. I think though she is probably telling the truth about her symptoms in remission, and it would be weird to make videos about experiences she isn't having anymore. I know it's hard to believe someone could do something like keto and control symptoms with anything besides meds, but the science being studied on metabolic issues and how mental illness might be connected is fascinating to me, the human body is complicated and it wouldn't surprise me one bit if keto turns out to be a really great treatment in the future. The reason it seems too good to be true is because she is really early and it still needs more proof. I'm not ready to try keto for my issues, but it's nice to know there is an option. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate the approach you have taken to responding to criticism. Although I do understand some of the concerns that people may have, ultimately you have to do what is best for you., and by all means, if you have found a way to put the symptoms of your serious mental illness into remission, please share it with the world!! It gives me so much hope that there COULD be something out there that could help me or others that are struggling. What you call your channel does not change that. If people take the name of your channel and interpret from that that they’re going to be cured, then it means that they didn’t actually watch any of your videos. If people are actually invested in wanting to get better and finding hope, then they have to put the time in, which means fully watching the videos or doing their own research. That is on them, not you. We need more people in this world like you, who try to start a conversation rather than an argument. Thank you for sharing your journey and providing information in a professional way, and with the added reality that you were living it! Your channel has and still does provide so much hope for me. Please keep it up.

Keto is so worth it when your symptoms go into remission. Yea the American diet is “fun” but when it affects your mood and triggers my symptoms is not fun anymore. Keto lifestyle for me has been very lonely specially because the fact that my diagnosis is my big secret- I haven’t shared with my family and friends yet so they just think I’m in a strict diet to lose weight so they often tell me to “live a little” and eat the junk. I really true believe in medical keto because I started as I said in another comment to eating carbs here and there so I experienced the symptoms get worse. In a popular linguage I am pretty sure that you are cured from at least the symptoms. I hope you keep going and can overcome this kind of negative comments. You’re doing a great thing Lauren. Keep it up. I think that maybe you have had such a great and fairly rapid response, is because at least by already exercising and being thin and relatively metabolically healthy…pre Keto…those might be factors for the robust response. Something to keep in mind.
I have had a tremendous response with a strict medical keto diet for severe resistant depression and social anxiety. For 5 months was basically in remission, slumped back to mild depression doing the same things but am working on getting back to feeling 100%. The other benefits, best physical health in my life, have lost 115lbs in 15 months, have a lot of energy, exercise daily, gut issues gone, sleep way better and feel rested, I can go on and on. So I’m a lifer for Keto…just gotta make some tweaks.
I’m not sure why some people are so skeptical. I think it is more likely the chronic sufferers and much older people than yourself would be my guess. It is hard having dealt with a chronic illness for many many years without help from any medication combos and from your best efforts. It is demoralizing. Me included. 27 years of unrelenting, debilitating depression. Many years lost. No family of my own, no girlfriend for many years, not able to work in my career of music consistently, and most years unable to work. Pretty depressing quality of life over these 27 years of depression. So there are a lot of us out there. I think you should keep in mind that many people with something that looks similar and didn’t have the trajectory that you have had may feel bitter about their situation and may be projecting on you, so that is something to keep in mind. I am not one of those people…I am all for this modality. But as bad as your story is and what you have gone through, there are a lot more worse stories with very chronic and debilitating lives…so something to keep in mind.
For future content. I would love to see videos and videos with experts regarding hurdles and barriers of keto for mental illness. How to optimize, how to keep it working, etc. Things like electrolyte imbalances, salt intake, exercise to optimize keto like HIIT, adjunctive natural therapies like cold therapy. And of course my main interest is troubleshooting why keto works less now for me and others than in the beginning. That is for mental illness. Because the physical benefits just keep coming. Thanks:)

I just did therapy tonight on all of this and went into depth on how to put mental health issues like ADHD and depression into remission given once it’s a chemical imbalance it isn’t something like a computer where you can say “ control alt delete “ and be good. But I like the word remission better because you are just simply managing the underlined issue rather then the symptoms and if there are genetically components or if there is pre dispositions issues you can’t stop it for ever but you can put it into remission by being repetitive in healthy basic habits like Lauren is talking about. And sometimes like she said medication is needed and I still need it to a small degree but in other things you can learn.

It is interesting to think about how something as impactful as this might be made accessible to people with additional barriers, like agoraphobia, ARFID, MCAS, other medical conditions that affect what foods you can eat safely, etc. There are SO many facets to why ketogenic medical interventions are inaccessible, but I wonder what kind of research this will inspire in the future.

@@kata6966 Yes, of course. First, I'd like to mention I'm not doing this alone. I am working with my doctors and we carefully monitor not only my mental health but physical health as well. I do not advise anyone do this on their own nor am I giving medical advice. And my doctor's certainly do not advise doing this on your own. I must note that dietary interventions are different for everyone. Each persons health is different and so are their goals. You need to work with your doctor's. Now, with that being said, I'd also like to say the medical ketogenic diet intervention has profound effects on brain function. If, your doubtful of that, take a look into the last 100 years of research done on how effective the ketogenic diet has been on epilepsy. To say it's been a miracle on how effective it is is nothing to sneeze at. There is research being done regarding the medical ketogenic diet at many prominent universities. Harvard, Stanford Medicine, John Hopkins School of Medicine, the University of Oxford, James Cook University etc.. I'm not a doctor but if you want to hear from those who are there is a plethora of information online that explains better than I can the importance of mitochondria, how it works, hows it's related to metabolic health and how the keto diet addresses these issues. Feel free to start by looking up Dr. Christopher Palmer. A Harvard Psychiatrist. I also must mention I am not anti-psychiatry. Medications have helped me. But, they've also been the root cause of many health issues I've had to deal with for over 2 decades. And in my humble opinion, if patients were given an option to help control symptoms without the side effects of huge doses of psychiatric medicine that ruin lives, I'd opt for a healthy resolution. I wish I knew 20 years ago what I know now. There's no way you could keep me away from metabolic therapies. Of course, the main component of it being making a dietary intervention towards the medical ketogenic diet. Now to directly answer your question. It's simple. Yes, I use the medical ketogenic diet for my mental and physical health. And I strictly adhere to it. It's a change. And like I said in my post above, I failed the first time around. But that doesn't mean there still isn't hope. I tried again and have been on it for 7 months now. It's been life changing. I feel unbelievably better and my medications have been reduced. As I see it, it can only get better from here. Also I'm still on medications. And that's ok. I'm not bothered by that. Maybe one day I'll be off of them completely. Maybe I'll just be at a much lower dose. Only time will tell. Other things I do to improve my metabolic health is exercise regularly. I try to stay on a regular sleep pattern. I take supplements. I've made changes in my life to reduce stress. I have a therapist I speak with regularly. I avoid drugs and alcohol. I'm working part time again. And now that I'm feeling more alive, I'm doing things that give my life meaning and purpose. I do things that make me feel good. And I couldn't have done it without the medical ketogenic diet, the help of my doctors, as well as the help of the online community including Lauren's dedicated work, Dr. Christopher Palmer, The Baszucki Group, and Metabolic Minds to name a few. So, to end, I'd just like to say I'm very moved and gracious by those involved in this field of psychiatry and all I want to say is Thank you! Thank you for bringing me life again!

I 100% respect any changes you feel like you need to make to the channel or your life to reflect your new inner self. I just feel like, realistically, you will always have this disorder. Progress isn't a straight line, it's a spiral. You have times of revelation and success and reprieve, and there are times of regression. That's everything in life, not just mental illness. Your diet and treatment has to be SO carefully monitored and maintained. I'm sure it's exhausting for you, but not nearly as exhausting as schizoaffective disorder. But, inevitably, you will have slip ups and down turns. I think it's up to you ultimately, obviously, but I feel like changing the entire nature of your content to conquering the disorder will make sharing those negative experiences all the more difficult for you. Maybe causing you feelings of unnecessary shame or defeat. What I'm saying is not trying to discourage you at all, just being realistic. I think this keto metabolic therapy is genuinely incredible, and I'm stoked to learn more about it through your content. But I think running away with all these feelings of success and enlightenment is skewing your view of what might happen in the future. We're here for your journey, not just your success, but how you've navigated the hard times.
I also feel like the tone your content has skewed negatively towards modern traditional medicine. While I think that the system is completely messed up and a trash fire, it also does help people and get it right sometimes. It's amazing to encourage people to seek alternative treatments, and do research, and to advocate for themselves when nothing is working, without also fostering distrust in people's minds for what could help them and is more accessible. You are very priviledged to have access to these doctors and this treatment. So many people with this disorder are not so lucky. Trying everything is valuable. And I will have to stop watching if that's the attitude going forward. It's amazing that this worked *for you*, it's not guaranteed to work for everyone, and I feel like your content has gotten more and more.. Pushy.. In that respect. That's the only word I can think of right now.
Those are my thoughts. I'm sorry if they were unwelcome, but I'm so happy this is working for you and you feel better! ❤

Before I was dx'd with bipolar disorder since I was a teenager, and the medication caused me permanent kidney damage. So I *personally* empathize with the discouragement and mishaps the medical system can cause. But there's a balance. I don't inherently distrust doctors, I just have to be much more careful with how I handle my treatment. I'm FINALLY properly medicated, for literally the first time in my life. But I'm not "cured" and I will never be cured, and I don't go around telling all of my neurodivergent friends that my particular cocktail is the answer. That's what I'm getting at.

I just think her personal frustration with it, mixed with the new world she discovered of a more holistic diet based approach to treating her illness, has made the tone of her content lean in that direction. The truth of the matter is, not everyone has access to or can afford what she's doing, and it won't work for everyone the same way. It's great for her, but if the tone of her content changes to this is *the way* to "cure" her disorder, I feel like it's a dangerous and disheartening path for not only herself but for people who are desperate for answers and can't do what she's doing. We're so happy for you Lauren.
I think while discussion on the use of metabolic therapy is important in patient groups, it's really up to the person themselves on what works best for managing their mental health and life. I don't think other people have the right to impose one way or the other. But for myself, I do notice a marked improvement in reducing depressive symptoms, dissociative symptoms, and perhaps reduce the risk of mania when I am paying attention to my diet and reducing fats, added sugars, and acids.
Conversely, whenever I am eating well but return to habitual eating where I consume whatever I crave -- I often end up feeling depressed and potentially end up in a dissociative episode. What I mean is, metabolic therapy with licensed professionals is something we - as a plural system - want to try so it's easier to engage in the world... Nobody can take that instinct for us to try away from us, and we won't impose what other people need to do for themselves.
Trust your mind, your heart, and your instincts -- even if it doesn't agree with the people around you. You're either right, or you're facing a consequence that you're most capable of handling than otherwise. But hey-- that's just advice that works for ~us.~ And that's the whole point. ;)

Your story through the year is very heartening and positive. Very best wishes in your life after schizophrenia.

If it really was "after", you wouldn't need to constantly do the diet. It's more how you have chosen to manage this, I think.
The thing is, these disorders can be episodic anyway. I went off meds for bipolar 1 for a year. Felt great at first. Ended up in crisis. Back on meds. Then wonder if it's too risky to stop meds (yes, I have been wondering it as I am tired of gaining over 25kg, which came off when off the meds).

      Time will tell.
If someone doesnt eat peanuts with peanut allergy, that's considered smart - she found lifestyle changes to not experience her symptoms, very smart

I like the message the new name gives - if I hadn't ever watched the channel and came across it, I'd think, "oh, that's interesting, I didn't know there was a cure for schizophrenia", and I'd watch and learn something new.
The work Lauren's done is amazing (I've tried keto and found it ridiculously hard) and I think the honesty she's approached it with it inspiring. Negativity in the comments can't diminish that 😊

You inspired me to go low carb and I finally lost weight. I had to lose weight because of my family history of physical aliments. And being black put me at risk for many things. I think you should definitely keep doing this because it really has helped me. My doctor asked me whatever I was doing, to keep doing it. I think you are a lifesaver.

Yes, when I told my doctor I was doing a ketogenic diet, she was quite concerned I would do more harm than good. The following year, after all my health markers had improved, as well as losing 50 lbs., she told me to keep doing what I was doing because its obviously working.

I have to say you were absolutely brilliant and so articulate it’s a pleasure to listen to you. I am so proud of you and what you’re doing, and I really hope that you can quantify or define it where it’s something we could look at and try and follow as well. It’s difficult when we’re just listening to a video and we don’t know where to begin in our part of the world. But if you were able to, quantify it or define it and put it in writing that is something, as a person, would love to have in dealing with my daughter that has this. Thank you.

I'm on food stamps and SSI, I live alone and I have diagnoses of schizoaffective disorder, autism, and ADHD, and I've eaten clean keto for over 5 years now. Yes, grassfed meat, organic chicken, only organic vegetables, etc. I live in a state that has the HIP program so that's an extra $40/month for fresh veggies/fruit. Because it took me forever to figure out all my food sensitivities, it was a gradual transition and I just kind of landed close to keto, and then made the jump when I saw how a friend ate over the course of a weekend. I thought, I could do that, it's worth a shot, I'll see how I feel. People really have no idea how expensive processed foods are, beverages, juice, candy bars, getting a coffee every day (even the least expensive one LOL), picking up a snack at a convenience store, canned soup. But feeling good is the BEST feeling. When I find out what makes me not feel sick, it doesn't seem like a sacrifice. I like feeling good, so I do what it takes, and the more I do what works for my body, the easier it becomes to keep up with it. I also stopped gaining weight, and eventually I was able to start exercising again after that. I also want to say that it doesn't have to be an immediate change - when I started I had so much cognitive impairment it was often hard to get myself to prepare *any* food (I trained some friends that when I called and needed help, all I needed was them to stay on the phone with me when I braved opening up the fridge, and somehow the social engagement system in my brain helped me decide what to eat) and sometimes I still end up eating leftover mashed potatoes with cheese for dinner if I've used up all my spoons for the day, and it's not the end of the world. I get back to keto the next day. I know it doesn't work for everyone, but I felt "off" whenever I went below 50 net carbs/day, so I do get to eat a little bit of potatoes. I hope sharing my story will encourage someone to give it a try and not give up if it's hard at first. It's amazing when you look back at just how many small changes add up over the course of a year or two. So much has become automatic that I don't even have to think about any more. It does get easier to maintain.

Your story is absolutely inspirational! I hope Lauren asks you onto her channel to talk about it.
I'm just starting to learn to 'train friends' in how to help me when cognitive stuff is bad. You're right how connection and being there helps.
And I like your approach of small steps. Lauren did many of those in her fitness and relationships, before she attempted keto.
And we do need folk demonstrating how to eat cleanly on a budget.
At this rate you'll be so fit, you moved to a smallholding in the country and supply other folk with organic food! Maybe doing other folks' gardens, on condition you get half the produce and are allowed to do it organically, would be a halfway step?
