"And everytime...........I pass (emphasis on 'I')" Phrased as ONLY Lady could do it. NOBODY had her timing before or after her. That pause between "time" and "I" is NUTS!!! She makes you wonder "every time WHAT, Lady???" before she finally closes the phrase. She could draw you right into the story with her.
this lady day performance was filmed around late 1958 or early 1959. in what one now knows were the last months of her life, lady's voice was noticeably rougher but none the more expressive and it was perhaps of that roughness that made her singing all the more poignant and moving. lady still held until the very end her sense of timing and rhythm and her phrasing was still often imitated but never duplicated. billie was in my estimation the best that ever did it.
@graveyardqueen2393 lady day had a long history of heroin addiction but ironically enough that wasn't what killed her. billie holiday died 17 july 1959 from cirrhosis of the liver brought on by alcohol addiction which was a side effect of one of her many attempts to kick her heroin habit. it what was known now as the last years of her life, lady day was completely off drugs but unfortunately by that time the damage was done.
yeah i thought the samething also what could be going through her mind whatever it was her grii was heart warming like she was having fun i wish i was there
@DubTheTexan I think we all have our eras. I prefer her voice in the early 50s. It was still full, and Norman Granz had her with small combos that let her voice quietly envelop you.
i love her the drugs started effecting her voice a little at this point but she is still the most amazing person to ever set foot on stage all these people now-a-days have no talent compared to her :) i may be only 20 but even i realize that this world lost one of the most amazing people ever in musical history :(
I think Billie Holiday is really amazing too. No one can compare to her, but I really think some artists now-a-days are really good though. I really love Queen Latifah in Jazz. And Melody Gardot (Sound a bit like Holiday) and there are some more. Anyways, Billie still is the best traditional jazz singer ever!
@guitaress1 nope, not at all....that was a billie holiday trademark....lady never sang the same song the same way, even in the same performance. that's what was so money about lady, she could take one song song and turn it around 20 different ways. music impressario john hammond, who discovered lady btw, also said this of her amazing ability to take a song and turn it into something personal, warm and rare. that was all part and parcel of the magic that was billie holiday.
@faldarazzo and lady day would be the first to agree with you....she always said of her troubles and scrapes with the law that she was a big girl and knew what she was doing.
To really appreciate Billie's voice listen to the recording she made of this song in June 1937 with, amongst others, Teddy Wilson and Lester Young. In the above video, her voice was deteriorating. Here's the 1937 version: th-cam.com/video/frLJefQZFh0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ImncRi6b-5wXNEdt

Her smile could light up the day.
No one like her. Best jazz singer ever.
🤓
It's beautiful to see her smile;such a lovely smile.
What more can you say of her voice that hasn't been said. She is the one and only.
PURE JOY watching this! Lady Day was so special. There will never be anyone like her.
She has a wonderful smile ! And the song and interpretation are great (y)
Simply the best at lyric interpetation
Легендарная классика!Билли Холидей!❤️🌹вечный старый джаз!потрясающе!💎🎶
All I can say is that this is the BEST Billie Holiday video I've ever seen. Thank you!
on repeat
I love the look on her face at the begining. Then she gives a little laugh. Who knows what was going on in her mind at that very moment. great video.
The One, the Only.
@73380401 indeed....there are some songs that lady sings and i cry like a baby every time i listen to them.
Supernaturally gifted...
no one has her voice, she copies no one...Billie is the "Lady of Jazz"
That was beautiful

Best Jazz Vocalist in the HISTORY of the genre and one of MUSIC'S greatest singers.
I love this clip. I too, like the beginning where she has that little grin on her face.
ESPECTACULAR........
I just want shout out loud I'm fooling myself. Beautiful! Beautiful! Beautiful!
Classic! Thanks for this.
She knows exactly what to say..... I love herrr
GREAT BILLIE.. SAO PAULO_BRASIL
A great influence in my singing - the slight off timing and key is beautiful to my ears.
God bless you 🙏🙏🙏 Billie
I do the same with "i loves you Porgy"! simply MAGNIFICENT!!
Yeah.. She gets up to sing. Smiles shyly at someone and I fall in love
....MERC
@nigel1034 what a sweet way to describe it....lady often said that she was her happiest when she was singing.
I love it when she gets up, getting ready to sing...
she looks like a little girl going to a carnival for the first time or something
how fantastic this woman was!..love her always...and I share her fooling :-)
This is a poor reproduction, BUT I believe it is best for me as Billie's follower. This is now collector's item. Three thumbs up!!!
I'm a little embarrassed to say how many times I've watched this video
..... MERC

@xxxBellexxx U got Man, NOBODY...
U got it Man, 'The Ultimate Jazz Singer' ever...
@hsbrent
The greats from the top of heaven made it possible to play with other greats!
Can anyone imagine what the world of music was like vocally, before Billy Holiday?
The real thing as in authentic
yeah i thought the samething also what could be going through her mind whatever it was her grii was heart warming like she was having fun i wish i was there

no había visto este video, gracias gracias.
put the blame on anti drugs users, not on drugs.
saturday 8 may, march against prohibition
Loving her...
Hey 4 deaf people here too xD
i love her
the drugs started effecting her voice a little at this point but she is still the most amazing person to ever set foot on stage

I hear Louis Armstrong in her voice. I know that she admired him, and I guess she was influenced by his singing. Pretty awesome if that's the case.
Billie! Mal Waldron!
Supreme. Funny how she changes the words though. I wonder if she forgot.
i feel you on that one
I think Billie Holiday is really amazing too. No one can compare to her, but I really think some artists now-a-days are really good though. I really love Queen Latifah in Jazz. Billie Holiday is in a class all by herself. No one can touch her.
@emarsha3 that's the hallmark that was billie holiday....lady never sang the same song twice, even if it WAS the same song, if you get my drift.
Mary Osbourne on guitar...
Yes she is....... Merc
@greekforasummer amen to that! couldn't have said better myself!
@faldarazzo and lady day would be the first to agree with you....she always said of her troubles and scrapes with the law that she was a big girl and knew what she was doing.
sad but true
what year is this? LOVE HER.
I think the word "cool" was invented for her
i do. i can make a video of it if u like. i love that version
@xxxBellexxx U got Man, NOBODY...
@rdickinsondickinson Mas quisiera esa estar a la altura de Billie Holliday.

On tenor sax? Tony Scott?
Eleonora, ti amerò sino a quando l'ultimo filo di suono entrerà nelle mie orecchie.......
Great Billie but video is in wrong key - it sounds like B natural but she's singing in B Flat.
@merc0049- Join the club.
i think its Mundell Lowe
@rdickinsondickinson SORRY "YOU'RE JUST FOOLIN YOURSELF"
Katherine Whalen from the Squirrel Nut Zippers has Billie down to a T.
I had all of her CDs already. She is an excellent singer but I like Melody Gardot better.
😂😂😂
AMY WINEHOUSE
What has Amy Winehouse, although she's the only singer that counts in this centuary, to do with LADY DAY?! Ridiculous!
... it's my story! sadly ...
ah..who's disappointed you, then?
Her voice almost sounds like Julia Stone.
Certainly not Billie's best performance
Is that a chick on guitar?
That's what I was saying!
Mary Osborne
