When I was 18 I bought my 1st tenor sax. I plowed my way to learn jazz standards, with Billie holiday as my main influence. When I was 40 I got fired from my factory job, thought it was one if the worse days of my life,, turned out to be one of the best days.and never got another viable job since. However, I was freed up to embark upon a career as a street musician. Mostly in Roanoke va, and Savannah ga. But some in New Orleans, Memphis, LA, San Diego , as well as many cities in the US , in Canada and Mexico. But holiday was with me the whole way. I was a practicing alcoholic until I turned 38. I aways thought I'd have to take a drink before playing in public, but the opposite was true. but, Ms Holiday was a huge factor in my recovery. Is as if she warned me not to take the road she did as I felt her presence close to me.i loved her madly.
Wonderful performance. Here she's really carrying the torch. She is even more swinging than ever!!! Wonderful timing Lady!!!!!!!! Swing, slow swing, happy swing, half time, great timing, impressive and exciting.
God Bless her, she is so easy to remember and so hard to forget. So thin and I'm sure not well at all, but still beautiful in song and face. In so many ways God blessed this child.
@@monicabella7894 Lady Day is the best! She was a Master at her craft. I wish I could've seen her perform but I was born too late darn it. I was only months old when she passed away.😺
She had pure magnetism and magic that makes your give her all your attention and observation. A rare sensation that will live on through her gifts she left behind.
She has SO many songs she owned and no one else could come close to including this gem. She was always chic and turned out beautifully and a riveting performance; it's impossible to take one's eyes off her. I have everything she ever recorded, including unreleased sides, and she was incapable of making a boring record. Even when she recorded a song several times every version is unique. Compare "God Bless The Child" on Columbia, Decca and Verve. Among the greatest singers on the planet she was always the favorite and the role model, and that includes Mr. Sinatra and Miss Lee and Miss Dinah Washington.
People who have only heard her are shocked when they finally see her. They never seem to anticipate seeing a beautiful woman elegantly gowned and coiffed, slim and sexy. She was that until the end.
Except her 'slim' and 'sexy' appearance was a pure by-product of her drug dependency and of her impending organ failure. One should not consider her illness as sexy.
@@rpatten78 Yes, before drugs and alcohol became her constant companions, Lady Day was a beautiful lady. Check out The Many Faces of Lady Day by Robert O' Meally.
True superstar, wow.... She was definitely ahead of her time. So many beautiful tunes and hits to remember this legend. She sung like a real instrument. I’m only in my 30s, but so amused by this woman and her capabilities and the gems she left for all of us to enjoy.
In this clip it's like you can see the spirit of death hovering over her yet she is still magnificent. I will always love her artistry, personally and the woman herself. A testament of how greatness is that decades after her passing people are still captivated by all things Lady Day.
Oh PUHLEASE. Ain’t no spirit of nothing hovering over her. We can see a woman, singing and enjoying singing music she likes. Give it a rest, BH was NOT. Tragic figure as much as you people want her to be one
She Is Graceful, and Miss Lady Day will always be a Legend. I can remember when my grandfather and my father as well as i today would sit back and just take inher music. Miss Lady Day is true to Jazz.

Here Lady is really sick. But she looks bad ‘cause of the terrible lights in the studio; there are photos taken in the same period in which she is absolutely beautiful. Her voice sounds here like the voice of the little girl who now she seems returned to be and in her deep never abandoned her.
Lady Day In these clips was so weak, frail but strong waiting for God Holy Angels to received her in Heaven love you Billie Holiday, she sang because she knew she had to (Quote from Billie)
Her lifestyle had def. Impacted her beautiful voice heard years earlier.... She still sounds amazing but not like earlier years.... God Bless The Child ..... Her voice was tip top shape..... Amazing
Not sure but this was one of her last performances she died 1 year later July 17, 1959 of pulmonary edema and heart failure caused by cirrhosis of the liver. She was ill from and had loss a lot of weight. Still stunning at graceful on stage.
Art Ford says the broadcast is in stereo! Never knew they had stereo TV broadcasts back in 1958! Was this using a simultaneous stereo FM broadcast, or what? Anyway, it's Billie, and that's all that matters...
This is glorious, despite the crummy audio, especially "It's Easy to Remember". She recorded this and "You've Changed" the following year for my all time favorite Lady Day album "Lady In Satin". Sadly, she died the same year it was released (1959), but not before claiming it was her favorite album as well.

My father never watched TV unless it was Baseball or the Fights. But, I remember him commandeering the old Admiral for this program and I was not happy because Dobie Gillis or some other stupid show was on at the same time. So, with reluctance I watched it and after about a minute or so, I was transfixed before I knew what that meant. Something about her was so honest that no one has ever come close to duplicating in my humble opinion.
+Alain James Notice that, during "Easy to remember", when she sings "press me tight", the way she speaks "press" always makes Mary laugh! Why? Because NO SINGER could ever put that amount of charm in just one word! I love Mary's reaction!

Yes, but she still couldn’t be anybody else!
Whitney Houston was our version of Billie Holiday during our era....RIP to both.
Mary Osborne...
It would have been much better w/out the visual. She appears to have been drinking plus other ingredients, just enough to allow her to perform.
Could it get more stupid? !!!!!
Enidra Yadakcoh your nuts!
She probably had been drinking to curb the cravings for narcotics.
