Hiking the Organ Needle - Las Cruces, New Mexico - What to expect

  • I'm going to show you what to expect when hiking the Organ Needle. Man was it a hard hike. The folks on all trails weren't kidding.
    Highly recommend bringing some form of ice traction if you hike in the winter time like I did. Trekking poles FOR SURE cause the way down I damn near killed myself. Tons of water, some good fitness and a camera with a full battery :)
    Enjoy!

    That scenery was so beautiful! I've never seen anything like that. The way up sure was different than the way down. Those cactus looked brutal.🥴 I know even some of those spiney plants have needle like tips on them...ouch! Thank you for taking us with you. Looking forward to the next adventure as we travel on..😊

    I was so happy to see this! I live in Las Cruces and I could never make that hike. My yoga teacher was just telling us about when she hiked up there with a group several years ago. I love seeing the view from the top and what it looks like on the top.

    When you said "we", I hope that means you were not alone. If you were alone, that was foolish. Having lived here all of my 71 years and done this 21 times, the last on September 24th of this year, I have in the past helped recover people who died alone on this hike. People of all ages have found themselves seriously hurt or dead as it is so easy to get into that kind of situation. To anyone else who read this post, please have the good sense to not do this alone. Great video, just wish you had captured more of the hike.

      I appreciate your concern. You also don’t know my skill level and to compare me to people who have died is pretty morbid. I’m fully aware of the consequences any time I go into the mountains, which is what I do for work

    Nice job, risky solo hike it would appear. Poles would be a must here in my view but I'm not as accomplished as you perhaps. Love the 4K prominence, awesome view. Gotta get back to NM for sure! Thanks for this, Brian. Be safe, be well.

    Lived there a little more than 3 years. Housecwas down there on the east mesa in the county on high hopes road. I never hiked the needles but always wanted to. I used to park at the lookout point on the pass through the mountains, leave my truck and go on small hikes just enjoying the scenery.

    I first saw the Organs back in 1975 when I was driving on I-10 travelling from Florida to California! I have always been intrigued with their "Needle" appearance and everything about them! Brian when you got up to the top of the Needle just watching the video I was thinking "wow" that you were way up on top of southern New Mexico! Thanks for your great video filming the hike and so forth!

    Wow bro great video ! I never did the hike you just completed. I did explore Fillmore Canyon in the 80s and we found a spent WSMR missle fuselage that had been cut in half to serve as a cattle trough 😂 A resourceful rancher for sure. Thanks for the great view and Video.

    I see the Organs every day from my backyard. I love them, they ground me and their changing colors during the day is awesome. I never made it up to the top, but I did get up to Dripping Springs and the area just above. What a view even from there...Those mountains out West were most like the Floridas on the way to Deming...That was White Sands Missile Base to the right of that big rock formation looking down into the Tularosa Basin (Alamogordo beyond). People have fallen into crevices and died in the Organs, with bodies found after the winter ice goes...Rescue has had to go in with helicopters... The EASY WAY? From Aquirre Springs parking/campsite, there are marked trails right up over a couple of passes in the peaks....

    • @BrianBearButler
      @BrianBearButler  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BrianBearButler Yes, from the visitor center you can hike up and just past the old sanitarium (yes, there was a TB sanitarium up there!) you bear right then swing around going "left" and come to a series of "ledges" for a great view. I was a bit shaky hiking those!
