Kai is one of the best big wave surfers I've ever seen, and I've seen and surfed a lot of big waves over the years living in Hawaii for 12 years and going over at least once a year before I moved over there right out of high school and when I moved back to San Diego in the early nineties (until the mid-2000s). Kia is the full package big wave rider with his bravado, surfing ability, intellect and approach to riding big waves!! Love watching him surf!!
And, even when Shane Dorian's wave was the best ever at Jaws, just notice how many bumps he has to negotiate before making his bottom turn. Also , thank you editor for leaving in the take off.

That 50' tube ride by Shane Dorian was truly the ride of a lifetime... and without a tow-in?? Crazy. Some of the worst wipeouts, however, were clearly experienced by the poor souls who weren't riding at all, but got caught inside by these giant waves, and in a desperate attempt just to get over them and survive, were caught by the lip and taken over the falls head-first in the most dangerous part of the wave... backwards. Who would ever ride a wave called, "JAWS"?? These are men of steel, heroes all.
A Question. Why did they take so big boards ? I dont know much about wave surfing. Just windsurfing :D Is it not better, when you use a smaller board ?
Mavericks is a killer. The cold, the bottom there has caverns you can get caught in. It goes from deep water open ocen swells up on shallow shelves. Its deadly. And to have some guy disrespect the men and women that have the courage to ride it by saying some stupid sunscreen off the wall comment makes me sick. One look at Mavricks and its deadly setup would send you running home to mommy pal.

I noticed a couple guys dive back into the wave, I assume to try and punch through instead of taking a bad wipeout. I would think the board yank them back over the falls. Could someone explain this to me?
Yep I agree it is intense and more dangerous but they have brakes, pit stops, safety gear and the ability to pull over if they have to. These guys have a surfboard and a wetsuit and are up against an unpredictable powerful mother nature. Once they commit there aint no turning back. If they wipe out they are held under water while being completely smashed so making it to the surface without drowning and heading back out to catch another one requires incredible strength.
Mad tom They may have safety gear but it only takes one crash to kill them. You can get injured and you can drown from the waves but if ou're able to hold your breath long enough it's not really all that dangerous anymore. While the formula 1 drivers have to hol their breath at every turn they make because of the immense G forces. The original question was about the mental and physical strength of surfers being the best in the world and that's just not true, it takes technique to surf and sure there's some mental strength necessary but when it's about the best, it's definitely formula 1 athletes.

But to hear Kai say he has to be "ready" one day for Mavericks is terrifying. I jus watch a lot of surfing videos and interviews but I really don't know. Any chance anyone here ride big waves and can open up on why Kai would say this about Mavericks? I honestly thought jaws was more intimidating to most big wave surfers than Mavericks.
I've heard in one video/comment that Mavericks is heavy, rough and the slams are violent, and the spits are very powerful compared to this, making it more difficult to be prepared for (even though the waves aren't as "big") Although I'm not 110 percent!
di A friend of mine told me what also makes it crazy is just the conditions; it's mega cold and you have to paddle with a crap ton of wetsuit thickness and paddling out is horrible for this spot. H
ThyChrysanthemum Mavericks just has much colder water which makes holding ur breather much harder and Mavericks is much heavier even when it’s not bigger and there r rocks that u will wash up on if you wipe out wrong
