  • When Lahaina experienced the most severe natural disaster in recent American history, Kai Lenny along with the Jaws Water Safety crew spearheaded efforts to collect and deliver food, water and other supplies via jet ski due to blocked roads. Many others from Maui provided shelter, served meals and rendered aid.
The Maui Surfing Community has won the 2024 Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian ESPY Award, an honor that recognizes athletes and sports figures who are using the power of sports to make a difference in communities across the globe. According to Kai, the recognition shines light on the Aloha Spirit and the Hawaii way of life.
“When you're trying to help other people, you're not thinking about yourself or the recognition you might get from it. I just did the best I could to help and so many people on Maui turned up. The award is for the entire Maui community because everyone dropped what they were doing and turned up.”
“With the aloha spirit you're not necessarily thinking of the future or the past, you're just living in the moment. When you live that way It's easy to do the right thing. The right thing in this situation was to turn up for your neighbors, turn up for your friends, family, and try to be there when it's the most critical moments of people's lives. At the end of the day, if you just let the Aloha spirit guide you you'll always be making the right decision.”
Watch now to witness Kai Lenny and the Maui Surf Community's remarkable relief response when it mattered most for Lahaina.

Seeing the shots of them delivering supplies to my family’s/neighborhood boat ramp is truly heartwarming. It was painful processing the situation at that time but when I saw people like Kai guys riding in delivering supplies to help the survivors, I couldn’t have jumped in the water faster to lend these heroes a hand. Seeing other local communities like Kai guys helping my family/friends, all I could feel was the true aloha and spirit of the people. Mahalo for sharing your love to the people and my family. Eō Lāhainā! Eō

Extremely grateful for what you guys did for Lahaina. But this island couldnʻt even open up the road to let these supplies in. Trucks would have been faster . Sad all the way around. Once again MAHALO for what you guys did

Didn't miss an hour in shock over the loss of Lahaina from Kona ... and having grown up surfing 60's NS ... have seen how it has evolved into a stronger and stronger community whom can always be counted on by some of the finest humans on the planet.

Would like to see a special on how Ocean Safety operates at Jaws .... because I wonder about the surfers out there that do no have their own safety team ... so does Kai's team assist them too? And would be interesting to learn about all the different strategies.

Maui's people still hurting, our officials are moving with the same ignorance and arrogance. Maui's people, Lahaina/kula people are suffering still houses are not been build and money is running very thing!
