This is amazing to watch, I am actually in this wood shop now and someone sent me this link! Not a lot has changed except power tools but the shop hasn’t changed a bit.

Amazing to imagine these boats way out on the open ocean. Thank you for this look into a fine old tradition.

Nice post. Love to see old wood boat building. Jus a simple tried & true build here. Simple & rugged. Refreshing to see. Enjoyed watching.

Excellent video, showed old timer techniques, I especially like the templates for the ribs that had the middle brace sticking up so they could be held in place at the top while fitting the side boards.

Great video thanks! Very interesting to see that they're cutting and nailing in the frames after planking.

I built a few wooden plywood boats in my time. These are mostly skiffs for inland lakes. I use white pine also, but it is the lower city lumber yard quality. This quality of pine could change texture within the same length, become punky, and may have cracks and tar vugs that can't be seen easily. I wish I could get grade A quality pine. On the other hand we can get ash easily. If my BIL can find a healthy tree, I usually cut it up with just a chain saw and I use a 12" CT face planer to finish it up for drying. The spruce won't work here in fresh water and W Oak is expensive. I note your shop doesn't make use of epoxy , resorcinol glues and seam sealers but calk the tried and true way?. My exterior ply does me 20 years if it's fiberglass cloth covered and kept out of the rain. Next month I'm starting a 14fft Newport dory, as I want the high prow to prevent splashes which land lubbers in my family don't like, Agh!!

Build your own! Its not that hard, just one piece at a time. Plans for a Banks Dory in John Gardner's, The Dory Book. I'm just starting to build the Alpha Dory and recording progress on my Utube channel, cheers.

I recall when I was a kid in nfld I remember the ole fishermen sculling over the stern of dories as they oar around the wharf those ole guys could get a dory moving at a good speed they were natural at it. Its like they were born in a dory that how swift they could maneuver that thing. I was raised in a small village in Summerville nfld and their was a guy who built Schooners that were famous from our town, and they used the dories on the Schooner, I think his last name was Humby.

I see how the overlaps work at the bow. But at the transome there doesn't show overlaps on the finished product. Not sure how that worked.

I think you can do it yourself, just watch and learn from Stodoys.
