With how horror has changed over the years, I wouldn't call the environment as horror. Not even for any stranded alone scenarios. It fits more for suspense than horror.
The hallucination of a human figure is common among arctic divers. There was even book written on the subject of these hallucinations. This series was a masterpiece.
@Carlo Canti It's caused by hydrogen narcosis. There is another effect called the Ganzfeld Effect. I will look for the book that emphasized the ghostly humanoid hallucinations. I think it was McCorristine, The Spectral Arctic. The producers of this series did an awesome job, it just amazed me the knowledge and insight in this series.

Earlier in the episode, Mr Collins (the diver) was there when the man fell overboard, and was trying to help him. He would have dived in to try to save him if he hadn't been prevented. You can then faintly see the drowned man sinking under the water, arms outstretched. So in this scene, while it's terrifying enough to see a corpse floating towards you, it must have seemed especially personal to Mr Collins, maybe even vengeful. Maybe that's why he couldn't bring himself to tell anyone else what he saw.
I also think he's not really sure about what he just saw, hence why he tells nobody about this, to not appear like he's crazy since he would be the only one to have seen the body floating eventhough it could be real since the guy fell in the water earlier, and when asked he tells it felt 'like a dream'. Nice touch.

I love how this completely captures the horror of being faced with something truly terrifying floating towards you. It'll just keep getting closer, reaching out to you as if it had a will of its own, and there's nothing you can do to stop it. It's just coming closer, slowly, but soon it'll brush into you.
Funny enough it'd probably be scarier if it doesn't touch you. The closer it gets the more you can process and if it did brush into you, depending on how you are as a person it could be more or less scary. Man fears the unknown.

as a diver who uses this type of diving gear, it is very well done and accurately portrayed. while the diving suit may be late 19th century but it is essentially the same as used in 1850. glad to see it done right.

This is seriously masterclass stuff. The subtle nuances in the acting, the breathtaking sets and music, how well the cold is conveyed. Even if this lasts 1 season so lucky to have gotten it.
It's only meant to last 10 episodes, because the Franklin Expedition didn't last very long. And even since finding the ships on the bottom of the Arctic Ocean, all we know for sure about the crew is that none of then survived. I expect this to be grim, bleak, and amazing.
neuralmute the following seasons will focus on later expeditions and surrounding lore much like an anthology series assuming this gets picked up, which by the ratings it should. This season like you said is this specific expedition and so far, after finishing episode 4 its still top notch!
More seasons of the search and the mystery would be fun, but I'm honestly happy just sticking with the contents of the book, and with the fate of the doomed Expedition. It's some of my favourite northern history (here's to living in Canada, a country that tries to kill you every winter, just like Crozier said!), actualy, some of my favourite Canadian history overall, and a damn good scary story on its own. I am loving the hell out of this series so far, possibly even more than the book. The sets and costumes are gorgeous, the acting is perfect, and so's the casting! As a history nerd, a horror geek, and a shipwreck buff, I'm so very hyped over this series!
Pretty sure the crew had zero worries about freezing. If worst came to worst, their captain would light the biggest fire the North has ever seen and no wall of ice would deter him.
I think the thing that gets me about this scene is that it isn't where it ends. Collins pops up throughout the rest of the show, his mental health progressively deteriorating after losing his friend and then seeing his body in the water. He tries to articulate his increasing sense of depression to Dr. Stanley, but gets told "Yeah, sorry, I can't really do anything with what you're telling me." It's so apparent that he's lonely and suffering really badly.
Now this is how you do horror right, not loud noises, flashing lights and sudden and cheap scares, just a sense of creeping dread, to feel helpless, alone, seeing something off in the distance and wondering if it's there? You look again, it can't be, it's not possible, and yet it's still there, it's very very real, and it's coming towards you

Best scene of the whole series. As if it wasn’t terrifying enough to be lifted down into the endless deep, dark and ice cold sea with the very possibility that whatever shall hold you snaps and you’ll sink towards the bottom like a stone.
Smart man. Kept what he thinks he saw to himself so as not to come off as the insane individual on the crew. His shivering will be attributed to the cold and not the terror that he was apparently feeling as well.
The figure in the water is the corpse of the diver's friend, who fell into the water a few days earlier and died. The diver wanted to jump into the water to save his friend, but was held back by others on board, who knew it would be suicide. Wracked by guilt and fear, you can think of it as if the diver hallucinated the whole event, especially with the presence of lead poisoning in their food, but I like to think that the sight of his friend was a genuinely supernatural, inexplicable event without any logical answers or scientific reasoning. Men just don't belong that far North, and the magic that resides in those climates are the same types of magic that will warn you to stay out, or kill you if you venture closer. His friend may not have been "angry" at the diver for leaving him to his death, but it almost seems as if the floating corpse is in deep sorrow, and wants to return back to the boat with the living, almost as if he doesn't know he's supposed to be dead. He could have been trying to warn his diver friend, or he could have been trying to get revenge. He could have been trying to grasp onto his diving friend, the same way a drowning man grasps anything nearby to help him keep alive. Or, perhaps, he could have been trying to drag his friend to his death as well, so he would not have to spend eternity alone in the frozen seas. I think that the drowned friend is destined to swim forever in the unforgiving North, dragging explorers foolish enough to enter the water into a watery grave. In fact, now I am almost certain that he would have dragged his diving friend down to his death if he had somehow managed to catch him before he was pulled up. The corpse hadn't simply floated all those miles to appear at that exact moment by mere coincidence. The corpse had swam.
The scariest thing is that we don't know what it was. Maybe it's a hallucination of Collins, maybe it's really the corpse of a drowned sailor, or maybe it's a northern spirit that warns of further danger...@@kuskuskus1212
This was one of the best TV shows I've ever seen not exaggerating I definitely recommend binge watching this entire season. Also gangland undercover was out around the same time as this and that was also binge-worthy

What's so cool is at 2:26 when he saw the body I couldn't tell what it was, I thought it was a shadow and he was just hallucinating. When I finally saw the episode I realized it was the body of the man who fell. It's so cool and eery

From what I know is that more than 100 years ago ships and sailors ( some of them ) truly believed in seeing mermaids and large Kraken creatures the size of vessels. Maybe the liquor, maybe hallucinations, maybe the food poisoning. Maybe true?
Could be true. We don’t know what’s really down there. Anyway, you can go to Cebu, Philippines where you can swim with several huge whale sharks really close for 30 minutes. I think the fee is $50 per person (kids are allowed for less).
Sea monsters we're usually just depictions of how harsh the seas were. Some people today have fear of boarding ships due to the titanic but imagine how more scarier it was to be on a ship during the age of sail
For fear of jumping aboard the bandwagon on this most fantastic of shows, but the fellow dressing the diver is himself an expert helmet diver and did the very same routine to me when he dressed me in one of his original helmets before my first dive. It is an unforgettable experience and one I will be forever grateful for.
I have severe thalassophobia and these images are basically hell for me. Unbelievably well done. I mean, really really realistic, perfectly portraying what it must look and feel like down there. I’ll take my chances with the demonic polar bear, thank you very much.
That’s what I like, enough of a view to tell me “that’s not right”, but not nearly enough visual detail for my brain to conjure an image.. that means my imagination needs to work to scare me, and it does.
Underrated masterpiece. There are some poorly done moments, just like any show, but this is undoubtedly a 9 or 10/10. I really can't imagine how they could've made a better show out of this plot from the dialogue, the acting, the directing, writing, and even decent CGI despite having a low budget. 9/10 for sure. Could've been a 10/10 with a higher budget. The last 4 episodes are some of the best episodes of a series I can think of. If this were a mini-series of 5-6 episodes on Netflix, it would've blown up. Brilliant show with a brilliant ending

About halfway through the show. Amazing atmosphere in this movie. Every crunch of snow, every shift of ice, every cold breathe taken. Wish more shows would use the arctic as a setting.

Ciarán Hinds absolutely nails an overconfident, blustery captain who doesn't know what he's actually getting himself into, the mannerisms, the line reads, everything. man what a good actor
In truth, the lead in their food was not all that poisonous. To the show's credit, the crew wasn't familiar with lead poisoning and never figured out that it was the lead water tanks that was really poisoning them badly. But lead doesn't make you go crazy...it just slows your mind and body down.
To support this effect I remember a scene where a man sings a song but abruptly forgets the lyrics. His facial expressions really nail down the point that it's not like he had a simple mistake. I felt like he knew something strange just happened and that was the effect of the lead poisoning.

Ever since I read "Buried in Ice" as a kid, I've been morbidly fascinated with the Franklin Expedition. Great to see a drama about it, even if it does have fictional elements.

This soundtrack on its own provides the most suffocating, anxiety-ridden cold and hopeless feeling in me. Just perfectly done. You can feel the despair in your soul.
I had no context (still dont) before watching this scene, it was one of those things that just pops up in your recommended. but jesus christ is this well done. you really get the sense that theres something in the water with him, the sea that we see is vast and expansive. yet the icebergs still give me a mild sense of claustrophobia. at 2:14 i get what i think may be a POV shot, it could have not been intentional but i got that vibe from it. its very eerie and, of course, it feels like something is right behind him. and then the body itself: the music gets slightly louder, which amped the effect for me. and the appearance of the body is so well done. its clear that its human, but just far enough, just blurry enough, i can barely make out a face. it lets my imagination run wild. as another comment stated, it perfectly captures that raw terror of knowing that if something isnt done, that thing will brush against you, that thing will touch you. i really liked this and i kind of want to watch the whole thing now. on another not so scary note: this may just be me cause im a sucker for character design and historical dress, but i adore the costumes in this scene.
Man this was such an awesome show. Set in the perfect time period between industrialization and exploration. I never got around to watching the second season but I heard it was good.
I've had the opportunity to wear one of those old diving helmets. Even without it being fully sealed up by the diving suit, it's damn near impossible to hear anything outside of it. I just get a chuckle out of thinking that Captain Franklin's final words of encouragement for Mr. Colins before he went down were nothing more than a muffled warble to him 🤣🤣🤣
This clip alone inspired me to watch the series when it was uploaded. And now I'm bugging everybody to watch this. Some critic "praised" this as a slow burner but he is wrong. I felt like I was reading an atmospheric Edgar Allan Poe novel while watching this. A sense of dread and gloom pervades you when watching it. And it's utterly entertaining.
The thing I love about the show is yes there is some type of a monster in it but at the same time it's more of a psychological mind fukk as well and that makes it even more horrific
To see something unbelievable and keeping it to yourself , especially while doing something no one in history. All while being in the middle of nowhere must be extremely lonely and terrifying
"You're a pilgrim to the deeps and remember, God lies in all realms." That choice of words is probably meant to sound reassuring but if I were in Mr. Collins' place, I would feel as if I am about to trespass into an unknown realm and there is no God down there that can help you.
Henry Hudson’s crew saw mermaids in the arctic, looking for the same cursed NW passage. They wrote about it in their diaries like it was nbd; clearly they were hallucinating but it goes to show people see strange things up there

Best scene of the whole series. As if it wasn’t terrifying enough to be lifted down into the endless deep, dark and ice cold sea with the very possibility that whatever shall hold you snaps and you’ll sink towards the bottom like a stone.

The figure in the water is the corpse of the diver's friend, who fell into the water a few days earlier and died. The diver wanted to jump into the water to save his friend, but was held back by others on board, who knew it would be suicide. Wracked by guilt and fear, you can think of it as if the diver hallucinated the whole event, especially with the presence of lead poisoning in their food, but I like to think that the sight of his friend was a genuinely supernatural, inexplicable event without any logical answers or scientific reasoning.
Men just don't belong that far North, and the magic that resides in those climates are the same types of magic that will warn you to stay out, or kill you if you venture closer. His friend may not have been "angry" at the diver for leaving him to his death, but it almost seems as if the floating corpse is in deep sorrow, and wants to return back to the boat with the living, almost as if he doesn't know he's supposed to be dead.
He could have been trying to warn his diver friend, or he could have been trying to get revenge. He could have been trying to grasp onto his diving friend, the same way a drowning man grasps anything nearby to help him keep alive. Or, perhaps, he could have been trying to drag his friend to his death as well, so he would not have to spend eternity alone in the frozen seas.
I think that the drowned friend is destined to swim forever in the unforgiving North, dragging explorers foolish enough to enter the water into a watery grave. In fact, now I am almost certain that he would have dragged his diving friend down to his death if he had somehow managed to catch him before he was pulled up. The corpse hadn't simply floated all those miles to appear at that exact moment by mere coincidence. The corpse had swam.

Brilliant show, well written. The stuff of horror, no gore, no jump scares but a well developed plot with suspense and tension.

What's so cool is at 2:26 when he saw the body I couldn't tell what it was, I thought it was a shadow and he was just hallucinating. When I finally saw the episode I realized it was the body of the man who fell. It's so cool and eery

From what I know is that more than 100 years ago ships and sailors ( some of them ) truly believed in seeing mermaids and large Kraken creatures the size of vessels. Maybe the liquor, maybe hallucinations, maybe the food poisoning. Maybe true?
Could be true. We don’t know what’s really down there. Anyway, you can go to Cebu, Philippines where you can swim with several huge whale sharks really close for 30 minutes. I think the fee is $50 per person (kids are allowed for less).

Sea monsters we're usually just depictions of how harsh the seas were. Some people today have fear of boarding ships due to the titanic but imagine how more scarier it was to be on a ship during the age of sail
AMC and the show makers did such fantastic job with this show, I bought the first season to support them too!
For fear of jumping aboard the bandwagon on this most fantastic of shows, but the fellow dressing the diver is himself an expert helmet diver and did the very same routine to me when he dressed me in one of his original helmets before my first dive. It is an unforgettable experience and one I will be forever grateful for.
I have severe thalassophobia and these images are basically hell for me. Unbelievably well done. I mean, really really realistic, perfectly portraying what it must look and feel like down there.

Underrated masterpiece. There are some poorly done moments, just like any show, but this is undoubtedly a 9 or 10/10. I really can't imagine how they could've made a better show out of this plot from the dialogue, the acting, the directing, writing, and even decent CGI despite having a low budget. 9/10 for sure. Could've been a 10/10 with a higher budget. The last 4 episodes are some of the best episodes of a series I can think of. If this were a mini-series of 5-6 episodes on Netflix, it would've blown up. Brilliant show with a brilliant ending

About halfway through the show. Amazing atmosphere in this movie. Every crunch of snow, every shift of ice, every cold breathe taken. Wish more shows would use the arctic as a setting.
They were all doomed i mean being in the middle of nowhere in the coldest part of the planet with a polar bear hunting you.
Idk if its what you intended but this is probably some of the best marketing that this show could have received because I immediately started watching it the night after I saw this vid.

Ciarán Hinds absolutely nails an overconfident, blustery captain who doesn't know what he's actually getting himself into, the mannerisms, the line reads, everything. man what a good actor

The tinned food was poisoning their minds and they went crazy.
In truth, the lead in their food was not all that poisonous. To the show's credit, the crew wasn't familiar with lead poisoning and never figured out that it was the lead water tanks that was really poisoning them badly. But lead doesn't make you go crazy...it just slows your mind and body down.
To support this effect I remember a scene where a man sings a song but abruptly forgets the lyrics. His facial expressions really nail down the point that it's not like he had a simple mistake. I felt like he knew something strange just happened and that was the effect of the lead poisoning.

If we're talking about the show, then it's obvious the lead was contained in the cans since the monkey started going mad about a day after goodsir let him eat out of one of the cans, and was perfectly healthy before.
If we're talking about what actually happened, while the theory of the lead-infected tin cans was indeed abandonned for the lead water supply idea, that theory was also subsequently abandonned. Again from wikipedia:

This soundtrack on its own provides the most suffocating, anxiety-ridden cold and hopeless feeling in me.

Binged this show in 2 days when it came out, was the best thing on TV that year.
I had no context (still dont) before watching this scene, it was one of those things that just pops up in your recommended. but jesus christ is this well done. you really get the sense that theres something in the water with him, the sea that we see is vast and expansive. yet the icebergs still give me a mild sense of claustrophobia. at 2:14 i get what i think may be a POV shot, it could have not been intentional but i got that vibe from it. its very eerie and, of course, it feels like something is right behind him. and then the body itself: the music gets slightly louder, which amped the effect for me. and the appearance of the body is so well done. its clear that its human, but just far enough, just blurry enough, i can barely make out a face. it lets my imagination run wild. as another comment stated, it perfectly captures that raw terror of knowing that if something isnt done, that thing will brush against you, that thing will touch you. i really liked this and i kind of want to watch the whole thing now.
on another not so scary note: this may just be me cause im a sucker for character design and historical dress, but i adore the costumes in this scene.

Man this was such an awesome show. Set in the perfect time period between industrialization and exploration. I never got around to watching the second season but I heard it was good.
Probably one of the best single little scenes in the show..and a geat character moment for the captain and his right hand man.
I've had the opportunity to wear one of those old diving helmets. Even without it being fully sealed up by the diving suit, it's damn near impossible to hear anything outside of it.
I just get a chuckle out of thinking that Captain Franklin's final words of encouragement for Mr. Colins before he went down were nothing more than a muffled warble to him 🤣🤣🤣

I had no idea this was a series. The book was utterly fantastic. I highly recommend it, and I hope this show is at least 1/2 as good as the book was.

This clip alone inspired me to watch the series when it was uploaded. And now I'm bugging everybody to watch this. Some critic "praised" this as a slow burner but he is wrong. I felt like I was reading an atmospheric Edgar Allan Poe novel while watching this. A sense of dread and gloom pervades you when watching it. And it's utterly entertaining.

To see something unbelievable and keeping it to yourself , especially while doing something no one in history. All while being in the middle of nowhere must be extremely lonely and terrifying

That choice of words is probably meant to sound reassuring but if I were in Mr. Collins' place, I would feel as if I am about to trespass into an unknown realm and there is no God down there that can help you.

Henry Hudson’s crew saw mermaids in the arctic, looking for the same cursed NW passage. They wrote about it in their diaries like it was nbd; clearly they were hallucinating but it goes to show people see strange things up there
