Let’s not forget that while Barbie was named after Ruth’s daughter, Ken was named after her son. So the origin story of boyfriend/girlfriend Barbie and Ken, is that they were named after brother and sister. So funny and interesting.
Does anyone remember My Size Barbie? The Barbie that was supposed to be your size, that you could switch clothing with. Did anyone else get their heart broken when they got their doll and realized they weren't Barbie's size?
You guys should do a bit more research I’ve known since I was little and just looked it up to be sure, the inspiration for Barbie was the creators daughter who was always talking about her dreams and aspirations while drawing paper dolls
That’s only part of it though. She noticed that her daughter doesn’t have as many toys to play with as her son does. Then she and her family went on a trip to Germany and that’s when she saw the German sex doll. She bought about 4 of those and brought them back to America, and decided to create a new and American version of the doll but for kids, and she named her after her daughter.
lili was not a sex doll or a call girl she was a secretary at a news paper who was a gold digger and she was a novelty doll for adults who were fans of the character
In middle school, myself and two girls try to recreate this music video for a digital media class and were told that we cannot show it to the class because it was too controversial because of the lyrics "you can brush my hair; undress me everywhere" lol
2:49 This is a bit out of context btw. The reason it was perceived that way, was because prior to Barbie, nearly all dolls that little girls played with were baby dolls. They didnt think that they wanted to play with a doll that was older.
The inspiration for Barbie was NOT a sex doll. She was a German doll based off of a character in the newspaper. It's like calling a figurine of any adult female character a "sex doll" It's just a small version of a character. The character it was based off of wasn't only focused on sex either, there were jokes about her entire life. She might've looked like a pin-up but she wasn't a SEX doll. This constant dialogue that sensationalizes a child's toy by saying it used to be a sex doll is weird.

I never saw the doll as a real human representation, nor did it have anything to do with my messed up body image that I later developed, in my 20s, and I also grew out of the "stereotypical" female stuff too as you get to know more of the world. I got a lot more influenced as a teen, looking at Britney Spears and other young stars in magazines and on TV, but even with that, it was more about clothes and fashion, rather than anything else, only with social media did I start thinking something was wrong with what I look like, how should I look like or how I behave and that was already in my late teens. Adults interpret everything as adults, kids are not interpreting it that way at all. It is REALY not that deep. Sure, some of the choices the companies make can look a bit questionable, but kids are kids. Social media, TV and ESPECIALLY, if not solely, your peers at school have a lot more to do with your insecurities than stupid cartoons, toys or whatever.

I always thought it was weird that Barbie's family members kept changing. When i was a kid in the 2000s barbie was in her like early 20s, she had a teen sister named skipper who was 14-16 and a little sister who was like 5-6 named kelly. They didn't have a mom and barbie was the mother figure for her younger sisters. Then i remember seeing a movie or one of those youtube vlog videos or something later on when i was in my teens or early 20s and barbie was like an only child or only had skipper.
I feel like a huge nerd because I knew your trivia facts... I just adore history facts and you never know when a random fact will save the day and surprisingly Barbie facts always hit. The early barbie movies are the best. What a fun video.
I think a lot of these Barbie’s that came out were because of the time. Back then people watched their weight, it wasn’t cool to be “thicc” or overweight. Everyone was tiny compared to now. A lot of these Barbie ideas seemed great at that specific moment. Clearly they discontinued the ones that were way too controversial. I played with Barbies and watched the movies. Not once did I ever feel to be like Barbie. It was just a toy to fulfill my imagination. Barbie could do anything and I think people are just trying to nitpick everything because they want attention and start some movement or whatever. Kid’s realistically don’t sexualize anything because they don’t know!! Only the adults are sexualizing the doll.
I'm mostly raising my eyebrows over that scandal because they used a Daily Mail article - I don't trust the Daily Mail and I have friends in England who advise me against reading it, it's conservative and its sensationalist, I don't find it reliable.
It's probably because your sister has a certain body type, is physically active a lot & may have a fast metabolism. Then again, it's your sister, so I don't know.
@@camilahopper11 by "We" you're implying both man & woman, which, in an ideal world, is true, but the biological, harsh reality is "we're all beautiful," when referring to visual, physical beauty, is false. The Body Positivity Movement, which is only for women, proves that "We're all beautiful" is a lie.
@@christianboehlefeld5168 oh, the "Dad Bod" trend started in 2015? Well, I wonder why. I think the "Dad Bod" trend is probably the male equivalent to the "Body Positivity Movement," which, if no one believes, realizes or cares to know, is only for women, not trans women, bur biologically born women. Ultimately, I think both movements & trends that persist to this day are to eradicate the U.S population & replace them with a new population. The irony & hypocrisy of the Body Positivity Movement is that, despite the "Dad Bod" trend, most women, regardless of their physical appearance & anything else about them, desire men in great, physical shape, while looking like a hippo, wildebeest or even a sumo wrestler which I like to call sloppapotamus. I think that men should deny women relationships & even sex due to the fact that she weighs more than her potential boyfriend/husband because if he can't lift her up to rescue her from a dangerous situation, while the argument can be made that the men should bulk up & gain more muscle, the women need to keep their weight under 200 pounds. Besides, what man wants to be with a woman and they look like the shape of the number 10, with the man looking like the 1, but the woman is fat & round like a circle or oval like the number 0? Then again, I'm speaking for myself. The dudes that do that are settling for a woman they truly don't desire, but sadly accept.

They need to do a video where all the girls react to the original Barbie movies and the original Barbie Life in the Dreamhouse. As someone who grew up with EVERYTHING Barbie, the movies were my childhood.
Ruth had two inspirations, Barbie being named after Barbara (Ruth's daughter) and Lili (who was just the European version targeted initially at adult collectors and then families/kids)
Wow didn’t expect a mention of a German sex doll 🙃I thought it was her daughter that was the sole inspiration for Barbie . Idk. And those old school Barbie movies were favs for my twin and I for sure

Now I’m in my 30s and I still have Midge and her family. I have lots of great childhood memories playing Family🌷
What about gymnastics Barbie? She could actually bend and do the splits. Also, the one where you style her hair- there were scissors to cut her hair, (as I was young I made a big error and got upset at myself for not realizing once you cut the hair it's gone) stencils, and color spray. I remember making star designs in the long hair and even crimping it. As I live overseas, did the US not have Teresa? She was the African American barbie sold here. Loved her outfits and how long they made her hair (which I definitely styled).
Ok, many facts were left out on the creation. It was a husband and wife team, and And this i think is weird that everyone chooses to forget or leave out This husband and wife team named barbie and Ken after their own children But still allowed them to be bf/gf or husband/wife. So weird.
I never saw the oreo barbie This is much weirder (and worse) That is BOTH Mattel and Nabisco being 100% cool with it. To me it's creepy having her be based off a sex doll. Like you're basically just being like let's make her look sexually attractive but not make her sexual. It's not ok and I feel like the husband was the one who based the look off his favorite German brand of sex doll looks...🤢

But honestly we need to talk about it more! SM has caused more mental health issues that barbie, fashion magazines or any kind of "perfect appearance" stuff(
"Scissor!" 😂 love Sharon
I always thought it was weird that Barbie's family members kept changing. When i was a kid in the 2000s barbie was in her like early 20s, she had a teen sister named skipper who was 14-16 and a little sister who was like 5-6 named kelly. They didn't have a mom and barbie was the mother figure for her younger sisters. Then i remember seeing a movie or one of those youtube vlog videos or something later on when i was in my teens or early 20s and barbie was like an only child or only had skipper.
Barbie got married to Ken and had a daughter : Shelly !
SCISSOR KILLED ME 🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣 SHAROOOOOOON
I'm mostly raising my eyebrows over that scandal because they used a Daily Mail article - I don't trust the Daily Mail and I have friends in England who advise me against reading it, it's conservative and its sensationalist, I don't find it reliable.
i completely agree i remember making up stories not once did i compare myself to her when i was a kid
My sister is 5'9" and like 115. It looks unhealthy but she all natural and always eats.
It's probably because your sister has a certain body type, is physically active a lot & may have a fast metabolism. Then again, it's your sister, so I don't know.
I don't really know why she would say that out loud-
Were all beautiful! All that matters if we are kind
@@jodawa2504 Have you forgotten the "Dad bod" trend that swept Hollywood in 2015?
"What does it bring you back to?" Dancing like an idiot and singing very badly in my room.
The Happy Family dolls were my fave! They need to make a comeback for real.
A+ video!
Fantastic tutorial about the history and controversies of Barbie!
Really liked the commericals and the music videos too!
Barbie Girl by Aqua is just such a classic tune
I only owned and ever loved one Barbie and that was pregnant Midge. When I was little I wanted to be a gynecobstetrician (dont ask idk why) and this barbie was IT for me. Thank you Mattel ahahhahahahahaha
i played with barbie growing up. id take my moms huge salad bowl, dig a hole outside and put the bowl in the hole to make my own barbie pool lol i had skipper and a bunch of others. when i got older i made dresses and outfits for them myself cuz i had interest in fashion design.
10:14 I used to play family all the time when I was younger, it was never weird. and no i dont think it incourgaed teen pregnancy Midge wasn't a teen!
They need to do a video where all the girls react to the original Barbie movies and the original Barbie Life in the Dreamhouse. As someone who grew up with EVERYTHING Barbie, the movies were my childhood.
I watched every Barbie movie made before 2012.
Sharon will never not be everything to me.
As a Trixie Mattel fan, I knew all of this info and more lol
She was actually inspired by her daughter Barbra 😭😂
Ruth had two inspirations, Barbie being named after Barbara (Ruth's daughter) and Lili (who was just the European version targeted initially at adult collectors and then families/kids)
Wow didn’t expect a mention of a German sex doll 🙃I thought it was her daughter that was the sole inspiration for Barbie . Idk. And those old school Barbie movies were favs for my twin and I for sure
I remember when Midge and Allan family set came out and you know what my mom bought me the whole entire family set for Christmas because she wanted me to understand how beautiful and valuable family is as I was playing with them as a child. Now I’m in my 30s and I still have Midge and her family. I have lots of great childhood memories playing Family🌷
Lilly was NOT a sex doll. She was pretty similar (even in size) to the later Barbie.
PLEASE get better sources of information!
How can you not include "Earring Magic Ken" in the most controversial barbie moments?
I know! Disappointing!
Ok, many facts were left out on the creation. It was a husband and wife team, and
And this i think is weird that everyone chooses to forget or leave out
This husband and wife team named barbie and Ken after their own children
But still allowed them to be bf/gf or husband/wife. So weird.
I never saw the oreo barbie
This is much weirder (and worse)
That is BOTH Mattel and Nabisco being 100% cool with it.
But as a genxr
I can testify, oreo was being used as slang for a person of specifically "black and white" heritage. Making it 2 different races available is EVEN WORSE THO
Holy schnikes
To me it's creepy having her be based off a sex doll. Like you're basically just being like let's make her look sexually attractive but not make her sexual. It's not ok and I feel like the husband was the one who based the look off his favorite German brand of sex doll looks...🤢
@@HaleyBug221 she wasnt based of a sex doll, lili wasnt a sex doll, she was a comic book character who turned into a fashion doll, but her clothing was a little more risky and was marketed more to adults however they noticed some kids would her beacuse you could dress them up so ruth came up with the barbie doll which was ment to be a more kid friendly version for her daughter barbra, which is where we get the name barbie from.
I was a kid in the late 80 and early 90s. We had Barbies, but instead of Ken most of my friends and I had New Kids on the Block dolls or the occasional Eric from the Little Mermaid. Hasbro men were just better.
Yes!!!! I never had a Ken, I had Danny and Donnie from NKOTB. 😄😄😄
Oreo Barbie never should have made it past the first meeting. WTAF???
Thanks to the movie I will forever remember Alan
My niece had that Happy Family set...The pregnant Migde, her husband and 3 or 4 yo son... Plus a playset with baby furniture. And Grandma and Grampa Barbies with a kitchen...I remember because I bought the stuff and it cost a fortune lol
At least it made her happy
I remember the midge and Allen wedding and at the same time I didn't know this happened 😳💀💀💀 I remember that commercial, tho...so confused now 💀
same reason you can have an astronaut barbie and a doctor barbie at the same time: MONEY, MARKETING, SOMETHING FOR EVERYBODY!
Wonder if the dieting/losing weight Barbie was because of Twiggy and the popularity of her and the show…
Born in 82, I wasn’t a Barbie fan. I had a lot of older boy cousins so I was always trying to compete with them 😂
I need Sharon and Jair to recreate that Barbie scene.🙋🏾😂
My friend had the giving birth Barbie, but she lost her magnetic belly 😂
I feel like the pregnant midge doll needs a comeback like teens dont really play Barbie, well the ones ive meet. Im a pre teen and none of the people in my school play with barbie so i doubt teens in 2003 were looking at pregnant midge and going "LETS GO GET PREGNANT!" like what..
in middle school all the boys was singing barbie girl on the daily.that song became a instant hit between me and my boys .i think family guy got us into that song
You have no idea how ironic they happy family set turned out to be on TH-cam and let me tell you it’s a good series
I had to beg my parents to buy me a Barbie when I was 6. That was in 1996. My parents told me I can buy, if it cost below $20. I learned to calculate and look at prices since. 😅
So everytime my parents brought me and my brothers to the toy store, I would run to the dolls section and slowly check all the prices. I would pick $19.90 sets of different types of Barbie or 2 sets of fashion pack each time and calculate how much 2 sets of fashion pack would cost. 😢
Omg I love your chanel and every person you have there, reactions are sooo genuine
Earring magic Ken is crying in the corner
