I have had a few Ram 1500 Hemi's and currently have a 2022. The GM at my local Ram dealer is a buddy and he lent me a Hurricane Ram 1500 Rebel for a day when I took mine in for oil change last week. I must admit it is a very nice engine to drive. Very smooth and very quiet which is great on the highway but it sounds bad when you start it up. Its powerful but I wouldn't say I noticed it being more powerful than my Hemi (Mine has after market high flow air filter and MBRP muffler replacement that might add a few HP but otherwise stock). I drove it a few hundred km on a loop i drive weekly and it used more fuel than my mine. In fairness its new and its was a Rebel with higher ground clearance and off road tires. So lets assume mileage is roughly equal. Perhaps the turbo has better emissions but it can't be that much different if you burn a gallon of fuel you burn a gallon of fuel. To me I'd stick with the Hemi at the very least until the is more durability info. The hurricane cost more, roughly same power and mileage and sounds awful and reliability and cost of repairs are uncertain as of yet so I'll buy a 2024 Hemi and drive it for many years. My last Hemi prior to my 2022 went 300K with no issues at all aside from exhaust manifold studs. Time will tell how these hurricanes fair.
Interesting engine choice from Stalantis. Wonder how a 3.0 liter twin turbocharged 6 will fare in the long run? Specially with emission restrictions and 500+hp. People should wait to buy and see if they figure out the kinks as time goes by. It sounds insane to squeeze that much power out of a small production motor.
I wonder they they didn’t replaced the 3.6L V6 with a naturally aspirated variant of their 3.0L I6. GM’s investment in keeping the V8 under their trucks hoods will pay big time in the long run.

Since 1979, Loyal Dodge/Ram/Jeep customer, but now Stellantis won't even get a chance to sell me anything. Took my 2017 Ram 2500 (lifetime Maxcare warranty) in for transmission issues in late July 2024, yep, need to replace the transmission. Today 8/21/2024 (nearly a month later) I got notice of ETA 10/4/24 for the new transmission. 394 transmissions on back-order, I'm number VOR 31 on the list. How can Ram/Stellantis think this is acceptable?
Nice truck! But not having the equivalent of Ford's 7.2KW Pro Power Onboard makes these Ram trucks a non-starter for me. The available Ram 2KW option doesn't cut it, I need Ford's 7.2KW to fully power my 25 ft RV while boondocking (microwave, air conditioner, etc).
Really nice Truck. I wish they would put this much effort into a Chrysler branded product! I can't afford anything over 35l. Do you remember when Chrysler came out with cool designs attainable if you had a decent job. I like that the Ramcharger name is making a comeback.
Sweet, beautful truck. The update was evolutionary but was done gracefully. No HEMI and no V8 AT ALL takes me out of the market for this RAM. Im old school. My dad taught me that if it didnt have a v8, its not a real truck. Ive always gone by that advice and ive never been burned by it.
Keep in mind that all of these vehicle reviews are being paid to tell us why "we shouldn't be mad" that there are no longer naturally aspirated versions of anything... and they never, ever mention reliability beyond the warranty.
We went through something similar during the late 70s and early 80s. Most 5.7 to 6.2 liter V8s were putting out 150 to 170 hp. We were spoiled by the recent V8 horsepower wars. Technology will catch up again and V8s will return. These new turbos aren’t of the engineering of the 80s. Let’s see what happens. Anywho, still plenty of 2024 and older Rams to purchase. You could also shop Ford or Chevy for V8 options. It’ll all work out.
Stellantis needs to work with Cummins or Isuzu (I think that’s the new Duramax)… and make a mini I6 diesel for Ram 1500 with similar strong exhaust brake as 6.7 Cummins.
It was a very bad comparison. The Ram was a 3.92 rear end which which is a massive MPG killer as well has very aggressive tires. The Ford Tremor had a 3.73 and weigh like 700lbs less.
"EPA: 15 City, 20 Highway, 17 Combined" since Motorweek didn't mention it in this "road test." Or that the fuel tank is 23 gallons... so you are reminded every 300 miles about the terrible gas consumption. Typical fill up is $62... every 300 miles. (Unless you have zero payload in the truck and are driving it like it's on an EPA test, in which case you will get a bit further)
In line 6 cylinder engines are the best type of layout, smoothness, ease of maintenance, room to work, simpler design. I am not necessarily saying this one though. I would have gone with a larger displacement, about 4.0 or 4.5 litres, high compression like 12.0 : 1 even if it achieved 350 horsepower and 300 pounds feet of torque. More reliable, longer lasting and as everyone knows, once those turbos start spinning, there goes your fuel economy. Bragging be damned.
If it were my money, I’d I can afford it, I’d get that twin turbo high output engine, since the Hemi is no longer offer. Like my uncle, I prefer a V8 in a 1/2 ton truck. He has a 2018 Ram 1500 Limited Hemi 4x4.
I owned 3 hemi engines all of them had lifter problems at under 60k miles. I do a lot of city slow driving. So in my opinion the hemi is a bad choice. But I currently own a 6.4 challenger hemi I hardly drive it though.
I almost guarantee that you won't see a tradeseman available on any dealer lot. At least not enough to consider it widely available to those who want them. Most will be forced to buy the bloated high priced models with glitchy fiat electronics. I had a 2014 5.7 hemi tradesman. It was basic but had great towing power. I don't need a home theater system/luxury condo on wheels for 90k. This is utter madness. I could buy a Lexus GX550 with top trim level for less! And don't expect a tiny 3L I6 to have a long life whilst pushing that kind of power. Toyota's finding that out right now. Semi truck engine makers learned the inverse relationship between hp and longevity decades ago.
The hurricane sounds great bit will require 93 octane only I have found out so that's off my list of wants. My 2024 1500 with etorque V6 runs really well and feels like a V8 almost so no complaints here it seems improved from my 2021 ram V6
Most ya'll are tripp'n, here in Minnie you can get a 25 1500 Q cab 6-4 box Night edition Hurr 6 anywhere for $49k out the door? almost the same as my 23 Hemi. feel free to drive on past if its not your cup o tea.
They could have gotten the same or better numbers with two smaller displacement turbo Hemi V8s. A full-size truck or SUV should always have at least one V8 engine. Otherwise, it's not worth it to get one.
The issue is that dodge took too long to update their V8s to meet emissions and were buying emission credits because they didn't move fast enough for their V8s to be a bit more efficient like chevy's and fords, including the fact that Ford and chevy offer their trucks with I4 and V6 options that help float over the issue of their V8s not meeting emissions standards that dodge doesn't have at all.
Just use a different transmission stop using TorqueFlite. They are not good for longevity. They’re great at delivering power but they’re not reliable after 60,000 miles
I’m glad I went out and got a 24 Nissan Titan SV, mostly loaded, for 48k out the door. No special financing but I’ll work to pay it off early. 48k made me want to puke but these numbers are nuts.
While the review is good, it's focused on the most expensive trim level and likely beyond the reach of most shoppers. Perhaps do a review of a Laramie with the standard output Hurricane?

Since 1979, Loyal Dodge/Ram/Jeep customer, but now Stellantis won't even get a chance to sell me anything. Took my 2017 Ram 2500 (lifetime Maxcare warranty) in for transmission issues in late July 2024, yep, need to replace the transmission. Today 8/21/2024 (nearly a month later) I got notice of ETA 10/4/24 for the new transmission. 394 transmissions on back-order, I'm number VOR 31 on the list. How can Ram/Stellantis think this is acceptable?
The front bumper resembles me a frontend of some cars from kia motors.
Had me with a straight six, lost me with twin screws pushing the six to behave like the 5.7 Hemi. Have to wait and see how reliable the six will be.
Big mistake getting rid of the Hemi. These Turbos will break way more, I am guessing like the ford eco boost. They even use more fuel.
Not gonna get these power and torque numbers, from three liters, without burning a lot of fuel. As far as reliability goes, only time will tell. 🍻
Eyyy first on a Motorweek video. Epic. Love you John Davis.
Legendary Automotive Journalist!
A 520 hp V6 isn’t going to be reliable.
straight 6
Good call. I knew that. Just didn’t realize that I said V.
no turbo is in ICE..they are al built to puke at 80-100k
It's a straight six dufuss.
Bought a new vehicle in 2020 and have a 2.9apr. Happy to live in those days in these prices
Keep in mind that all of these vehicle reviews are being paid to tell us why "we shouldn't be mad" that there are no longer naturally aspirated versions of anything... and they never, ever mention reliability beyond the warranty.
This was straight up salesmanship and telling viewers they shouldnt be mad really pulled open the curtains on that fact.
5.7l hemi should atleast be an option. Like ford does with the 5.0.
I’m not a truck guy, but the RAM looks very 🆒 cool
And they have a great ride quality.
The 2025 Ram 1500 is guaranteed.....to pile up on dealer lots.
I absolutely love my 2018 Laramie with the hemi, best truck I've ever had
Wow actually I can’t wait for an aftermarket exhaust on these engines 🎉🎉🎉
Stellantis needs to work with Cummins or Isuzu (I think that’s the new Duramax)… and make a mini I6 diesel for Ram 1500 with similar strong exhaust brake as 6.7 Cummins.
TFL truck showed that the MPG is lower than the coyote V-8 on the highway. so what's the point of this new motor?
Where is this truck made? Thanks for the review!
MOSTLY IN MEXICO
If it were my money, I’d I can afford it, I’d get that twin turbo high output engine, since the Hemi is no longer offer. Like my uncle, I prefer a V8 in a 1/2 ton truck. He has a 2018 Ram 1500 Limited Hemi 4x4.
They dropped prices to 48k for a 2025 Bighorn with the hurricane. I traded in my 18 with Hemi. The 25 is a better truck.
John Davis is an absolute LEGEND
So what's tungsten about it?
Damn, more power than the srt10 Ram
Until a turbo goes.
Whats MPG on the 3.0TT ???
Small increase at best but much more power. You basically get one or the other
I have a 2020 5.7 with etorque. I would much prefer the new inline 6 turbo especially the higher output one.
The Hurricane twin-turbo is plagued with problems... good luck to the buyers 😢😢😢
Please be more specific, What problems?
I owned 3 hemi engines all of them had lifter problems at under 60k miles. I do a lot of city slow driving. So in my opinion the hemi is a bad choice. But I currently own a 6.4 challenger hemi I hardly drive it though.
This is my future truck right here
But I would love to see and own srt and TRX trim package of this town
1/4 mile time? 0-60?
Not ever buying a non V8 pick up, ever. But that Tungsten interior is amazing
Love this channel they need to add an offroad course and person to be competitive
Not exactly what I call a road test. No track test.
This RT was shot off site, outside of Austin, TX. No access to their home test track.
The Tungsten is too cool to be a Ram. It's fit to be a luxury suv in one sense.
Motor Week in full is bs. Replace the Hemi for a six and you're ok with that? You taking money under the table?
I enjoy this new engine, I6 are cool, one turbo feeds 3 cylinders, 500 CCs per cylinder im optimistic
Johnathan Davis is a blessing to us all
Seems fine, but bring back the 4.7HO Dakota
Never gonna happen at this rate
lmao 4.7 what year is it 2003?
The hurricane sounds great bit will require 93 octane only I have found out so that's off my list of wants. My 2024 1500 with etorque V6 runs really well and feels like a V8 almost so no complaints here it seems improved from my 2021 ram V6
Only HO requires premium. The SO hurricane does not.
@@beauwille2294 better look again
@@zrxcat Sure. Where should I look beyond the owners manual, which specifies 87/91 for SO/HO respectively?
Most ya'll are tripp'n, here in Minnie you can get a 25 1500 Q cab 6-4 box Night edition Hurr 6 anywhere for $49k out the door? almost the same as my 23 Hemi. feel free to drive on past if its not your cup o tea.
Who the hell drops $90k on a truck? Please let us know so we can get them the mental help they so desperately need…….😮
Came here because I thought it was time for a truck. I’ll try again in five years.
I love my ram truck!
Damn i hate that i like it already got some outfitter ideas
They could have gotten the same or better numbers with two smaller displacement turbo Hemi V8s. A full-size truck or SUV should always have at least one V8 engine. Otherwise, it's not worth it to get one.
Why not turbo a v8?
The issue is that dodge took too long to update their V8s to meet emissions and were buying emission credits because they didn't move fast enough for their V8s to be a bit more efficient like chevy's and fords, including the fact that Ford and chevy offer their trucks with I4 and V6 options that help float over the issue of their V8s not meeting emissions standards that dodge doesn't have at all.
@@carboydorifutoparty3976 i see, still stupid but ok. No v8 on a truck is just weirdd
mpg, it wasn't a choice, surprised to see so any applaud this when we know how this will turn out. Unreliable and expensive.
Love that they went with an inline 6.
Conundrum, house or truck.
you can live in your truck
When will there be a new-gen Ram truck? Will it be followed by a Ram-badged SUV that could preview the next-gen Jeep Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer?
Just use a different transmission stop using TorqueFlite. They are not good for longevity. They’re great at delivering power but they’re not reliable after 60,000 miles
Why no 0-60 and 1/4 mile numbers?
I’m glad I went out and got a 24 Nissan Titan SV, mostly loaded, for 48k out the door. No special financing but I’ll work to pay it off early. 48k made me want to puke but these numbers are nuts.
While the review is good, it's focused on the most expensive trim level and likely beyond the reach of most shoppers. Perhaps do a review of a Laramie with the standard output Hurricane?
Just as good
