The straight 6 is an inherently great design whether its NA, Turbo gas, or Diesel. This is the most interesting thing Ram has done in years and its no surprise after GM's slam dunk on the 3.0 Duramax and Rams own failure with the v6 ecodiesel. My answer for most people is no, not this truck or any brand new one (with the possible exception of the Maverick). Instead, buy one 3 or 4 model years old (often coming back from a lease) for around 50% of the sticker then which may be 60% or more of a discount to the MSRP for the current model year. I have never had issues getting good fuel economy out of turbo-charged engines. We have a 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe with 2.0L turbo that consistently gets 27 to 29 mpg hwy on the gas engine alone. Though a strong head wind does affect it more than other vehicles I've owned. I think mostly due to aerodynamics and weight of the vehicle with the hybrid batteries. However, with the hybrid drivetrain doing mostly in town driving, we have driven over 800 miles on a tank of gas in it.
Most of the turbo-charged vehicles I have owned were/are all Mopars. My 86 Daytona Turbo Z consistently gets 24 mpg in town with a 3 spd automatic even when driving it pretty hard laying into that boost. And they have all been very reliable vehicles.

The small block v8 requires more fuel to maintain idle than the small displacement turbo engines. So it makes sense the smaller displacement engine is better at “downhill mpg”. When the small turbo displacement gets put under load “uphill”it acts more like a big block in power and consumption.
NA small block with cylinder deactivation tried to due this but GM DFM/AFM failures and “Hemi tick” warranty repairs has scared OEMs away from messing with cylinder deactivation. Market wants MPG and power in new trucks.

It has only been six months but so far I am impressed with the Hurricane TY Inline 6……..Power is there and very minimal turbo lag. Even cruising in mid 70’s the ride is solid, smooth and minimal road NVH. I still say that the inline engine and “centerline” thrust helps in cutting down vibration and noise. Granted mine is a Grand Wagoneer but definitely a decent engine. The lack of dipstick is definitely a “Zonk” In my opinion but a learning curve that eventually owners will adapt to.
I was skeptical about the power running boards but again, I am getting
Used to being spoiled. I have my HEMI fix with my Charger Daytona!! I feel safe and comfortable AA d as long as your eyes stay about 3-5 minutes ahead of the vehicle and traffic, you should be fine.
My remarks are about the Hurricane engine and JGW, but same engine and is planned to be the next “Global Platform ICE with a simple addition of the two extra cylinders and the second Tirbo.
One other drawback besides the no oil dipstick is the Direct Injection engine…..sorry fight all you want , but it’s the way of the future for ICE e gone to be the future as long as we fight to keep the option. 50-60-75K+ mileage engine could be a good investment in SeaFoam but until then should be turn and burn!

I am 100% for having an oil level sensor on any combustion engine. However did they really save much by omitting the dipstick? Make the dipstick optional I would pay an extra $50 for a redundant way to ensure my oil level is not low. The dipstick does not have any downsides and in reality it probably costs the manufacturer a few cents to add. Time will tell if the SST is going to be reliable. I suspect that after the first few years they will work out the bugs and it will be a fine powerplant. I still love my 22 Limited with the HEMI and this does not tempt me to trade it in.

  • @coachvonyo

Guess we should monitor battery/alternator voltage with an under hood terminal clip on reader vs. a voltage gauge in cab? Maybe we should have a mercury thermometer under the hood to read water temps vs an in cab gauge? How about oil pressure monitored only by looking at an engine block screw in reader versus an in cab gauge? I can go on and on. The ability to easily check your oil level anytime without popping the hood from the comfort of the cab deviates from the norm, but if you stop and think about it, what's one more electrical system in a sea of them? Love or hate it ehatever, but i think sometimes we just like to bitch about things, and im not immune from that either. But I personally like this. And the rotary shift knob!

Big Horn/Lone Star is comparable to XLT from Ford or LT from Chevy or SR5 from Toyota.

I went from a 2.7 Ecoboost back to my old friend 5.3 Chevy. Picked up MPG along with peace of mind.

Can't see trading my 21 f150 V8 given new truck prices and depreciation. Best mpg 25.8, worst (towing) 11.5.

89 is recommended but I’m pretty sure you can use 87 at a minimum.

HO version needs higher octane to get full power, 87 is all that is needed on standard output like this one.
