    As a guy who's just coming into the hobby, never painted or based in his life, this was very helpful. The end result for me isn't *quite* as good as what you've got there but like painting the minis theirselves, I'd guess that comes with time and practice. Thanks for the easy to follow guide, it really finishes the job on my Uruk-Hai scouts!

      Yep, practice practice practice! I can't stress how important it is to keep working at new techniques. It's OK to not get them on your first try so long as so long you keep at it you will get better :D

    CHALLENGE!! Can you make a Slaanesh base concept that looks like the ground is corrupt by Slaanesh however the ground must look like the earth is morphing into flesh. This concept also has to be able to be recreated to all the different size bases.

    GW, God bless 'em, struck archer skinks from their codex several years ago, and I was able to buy a bunch of really cheap, second hand, unpainted skinks to provide an army for my Reaper Swamp Hag. That being the case, I'd be interested in giving my bases a swamp/marsh look. Hopefully, it would not be totally unique to the one inch square slotta bases that came with the skinks, but could be used on a large, oval base for her Schleich Komodo Dragon, for which I'll be building a howdah, so she can ride into battle.

    Old dog here trying to learn some new tricks. My big question for you is about sealing with the spray varnish. Suppose I'm using a rattle can, how can I properly seal the base while not over varnishing and ruining my mini? I can make a base up to this standard, but I'm struggling with the pairing of a decently painted miniature with a equally decent base.

    • @PeteTheWargamer
      @PeteTheWargamer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I often varnish my models and my bases at the same time with no issues. Just make sure you apply your coats lightly and build them up over a few layers rather than just dumping out half the can. I would also recommend brush on varnishes should not wish to over spill onto your model.

  • @01huntingtown
    @01huntingtown 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not sure I'd leave the grass to dry before tapping it off. You're left with grass that dries flat or at unnatural angles. If you turn it upside down and give it a tap or a gentle blow, then you can get the grass to stand on end, and dry upright.

    • @PeteTheWargamer
      @PeteTheWargamer  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      With static grass it doesn't matter too much as the 'static' effect of the nylon strands will cause them to stand up once dried.

    • @PeteTheWargamer
      @PeteTheWargamer  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's possible you've applied it a little too heavily. I know that some people have been able to fix issues like that with a coat of gloss varnish. I would test it out on a small part of the model first though.

  • @davidtobin1

    I’m not sure if I’m a fan of grass on minis at all. Scale always seems to be an issue and I do bump against it. That’s said, your explanation and tips were super easy to follow.

    • @PeteTheWargamer
      @PeteTheWargamer  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The textured ones? They're not bad, they do the job and are quick. But you can get much better results with sand and cheaper results by mixing some find sand in with some acrylic paint and PVA glue.

  • @ThatsMyBub

    Sorry to comment on such an old video, but I'm relatively new to the hobby and I'm struggling with applying static grass? I follow your technique and the result looks great up until the static grass, where it starts to look like it's sticking out at odd angles and not natural at all? do you have any advice?

    • @PeteTheWargamer
      @PeteTheWargamer  ปีที่แล้ว

      So static grass fibres should repel each other which causes them to stand on end. If the grass isn't looking natural then it could be because you're using too much glue or glue that's too thick which is preventing the grass from naturally positioning itself. If you're using a water soluble glue, like pva, try thinning it out with a little water and see how you get on.

    • @PeteTheWargamer
      @PeteTheWargamer  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've not tried it but I don't think it would make a huge difference. I feel that the wash would flow off the grass and not do much to alter the colour.

    @The War Gamer, do you use Stain less steel ball bearings to make your army painter paint flow properly??

      I haven't added any to my paints but a few of the Mig paints that I use have them in and they're very helpful in mixing the paint.
