    Nice, really like the idea of taking a high end miniature paint to a DIY store for colour matching and making up a big cheap batch as an emulsion tester for use in basing. It’s so simple & obvious, but I never would have thought of it. Big brain move there, like it.

  • @martynjones3978

    I bought cork matts from ikea that you usually use for hot plates or pans to stop the table from being burnt.
    When you tear it apart you can get big chunky rock shapes, you can paint it with super glue or watered down glue to harden it or leave it as it is and just prime it.
    It comes up nicely when painted and easier then the milli put and possibly a lot cheaper!!

    • @SwordsandBrushes
      @SwordsandBrushes  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Great idea!! I've seen some lovely rocky looking bases with those Cork mats :)
      I've also used a cheese grater on normal corks to create quick rocks.
      Twice the fun if drinking the wine and then using the corks for the hobby haha 😄
      I may do a part two to this video and add some more ideas:)

    Great vid. My PRO TIP is base your minis before undercoating. Then it just becomes another surface to get paint on as part of your mini, rather than a whole other process that you have to do after 'finishing' your mini. I find I get more completely finished minis this way.

      I tend to batch base in a session and get about 50 done at a time- which would last me a little while. Because i paint a lot i find it more efficient and quicker for me.
      I know that other people tend to glue their models down first then add the basing afterwards - both methods will work well, but i would suggest to try it out on a few miniatures and see what works well for you :)
      For delicate looking miniatures, or ones that do not have much surface area to glue down a foot for example, such as a horse or if someone is running forward and only a toe would be touching the floor - i would glue them down first before basing just to make it as stable as possible :):)

    Hey! I love your movies, they are just so informative! I was using the above one when when working on some bases and with great effect :) One thing I was wondering about - how are you approaching metal models? Do you also cut off their "bottom bar" and later re-attach them to the base? Or maybe you just work the base around the model? I am currently working on base of the "Frodo laying by tree" and there's not really much of base to work on - mini is always getting in the way.

    • @SwordsandBrushes
      @SwordsandBrushes  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you very much, i really appreciate that :) With metal minis i wouldnt go down the route of just supergluing them ontop on the sand layer as it will not hold very well due to the weight - for the most part i either glue it into the slotta base and then apply the sand afterwards.
      Or you could "pin" it in two ways -
      1) either drill a hole in the foot and base, superglue some paperclip into the hole and place it that way.
      2) which is my preferred method as i already have slotta bases that come with my models, is to use some masking tape over the slotts and then just base as normal.
      And for the miniature instead of faffing around with drilling and paperclipping, i just clip off the base but leave a wedge under a foot. That will then be placed through the slotta after making a hole with a knife or sculpting tool - and superglue that in to make it secure.
      Any of these methods should work fine and dandy :):)
      With the frodo laying by the tree, i just glued mine on the base first and sanded around it just so it looks like the tree stump is coming out of the ground :)
      Hope that helps!

    • @Kogitto11
      @Kogitto11 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SwordsandBrushes Thank you for the reply! I will keep on working on Frodo while he's attached then :) I would love to see how you work on base while model is present, especially some "difficult", obstructing model. I am curious how would you do drybrushing etc., as I am not imagining doing that with my current experience... Also I couldn't find any videos about that - all I find are concentrated on doing bases with model detached. Maybe that's an idea for a clip ;)

  • @borna1231
    @borna1231 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This video is currently on repeat, as I´m FINALLY basing my Rohirrim from the Battle of Pelennor fields :). Thanks so much! I have only one question though: do you find that just supergluing the figures to the base is enough to make them reasonably sturdy for gaming, or do you also pin your minis?

    • @SwordsandBrushes
      @SwordsandBrushes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thats awesome! glad to hear that you are getting your minis done, and also that you like the video!
      Im looking forward to starting the Pelennor Fields box next week, ive had it long enough haha
      I would say the majority of the miniatures yes it will be fine and dandy, for things like horses i would definitely use the holes on the 40mm bases for extra stability!
      You could certainly just glue everything with the tabs in the first place before sanding too - but it's all about trial and error and seeing what works best for you :):)

    • @borna1231
      @borna1231 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SwordsandBrushes Awesome, thanks for the reply and the advice!
      yeah, I´ve pinned and glued 95% of models to the bases prior to priming up to this point, but then it´s kinda a pain in the butt to paint the base around the model. It gets difficult to use drybrushing and some other methods, plus it seems MUUUUUCH slower than bulk base building.
      Welp, I guess this is the project where I finally trust fall into the gooey hands of super glue.

    • @SwordsandBrushes
      @SwordsandBrushes  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes there is definitely pros and cons to which ever method you go with, overall i feel base batching outweighs it and takes the biscuit for me! :)
      But i do tend to use slotta bases which are covered up with masking tape - so if i do need a bit more surface area for feet to be stuck down - then i can use a small part of the tab at the bottom of the foot - for extra strength. - if you know what i mean, as its not the easiest to write it in text without showing :)

    Wonderful video for a new guy at painting minis. But, by minis are already have a base. Am I supposed to remove them? How to you add a mini to your finished product?

    • @SwordsandBrushes
      @SwordsandBrushes  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not a problem at all, i did these with out miniatures as it easier to record them and show off each stage with out a miniature in the way.
      I wouldn't remove them if they are already on as its more hassle - You can absolutely do the same process with the miniature already glued onto the base - thats how i do some of my miniatures :):)

    So do you just cut off the plastic strip below the mini's feet and get yourself a new base without the rectangular hole in the middle? If so, will the mini's remain in place if you only glue them to the base by their feet?

    • @SwordsandBrushes
      @SwordsandBrushes  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I tend to do that on pretty much every project, it saves me a nice amount of time when not trying to base around feet, cloaks weapons etc. Just use super glue to attach and you are good to go.
      It's kind of like when creating a diorama but you don't want the miniature base to be present, just gluing the plastic miniature to rocks, debris with super glue is more than enough.
      But something like a metal miniature - i tend to keep the tab on the feet, as it's just heavy!
      However sometimes i feel a mini needs to have the strip at the bottom, especially if its something like a dainty elf that is only attached by some toes! then i glue the tab into the slot and do it that way.
      Hope that helps a bit! :):)

      I use two layers of PVA. The first one undiluted, often with a dash of dark brown paint so I can see where it’s been applied, and the second diluted roughly 50:50 with water, and with a lot more dark brown pigment. The second layer serves to seal in the loose sand and gravel and acts as an undercoat.

    Noob question, how do you glue the miniature to the base if it's almost only sand to glue on to?

      Thank you for the question! :) I use super glue when gluing plastic minis on, for metal i tend to just use the slotta part of the base.
      But you can just glue the miniatures onto the base first and then add the textures/paint afterwards - whatever works best for you :):)

    But don't i have to plan where the feet of the miniature would go? It would look odd if the feet would rest only on the peaks of the sandgrains. Or am i overcomplicating it?

      For the video i've not put the miniature on so that you can clearly see the base and how they were created, you absolutely can glue the miniatures on first and then use some the the techniques to create some nice bases for your miniatures.
      I would say have a go both ways and see which way you prefer and what you would enjoy doing :):)

    6:10 you didnt mention the black paint on the rocks is clearly watered down, otherwise it would just make the tip of the rock black

      important info for people with 0 modellling experience, cause they often dont water down the paints

      Ah yes, that paint It not watered down, it is a wash so it goes into the recesses, but thank you for letting me know as i will keep this in mind for beginner videos later on so i can be as informative as possible :):)

    Great video, thanks so much for the basing techniques.
    ...but by god, GW's LOTR miniatures look awful. It's like they never updated sculpts from 20 years ago.

      haha yeh 20 year old models, i do like a lot of the range, but some of it could do with a smidge of an update with a shiny new plastic kit :P

    how to base miniatures. ... but where is miniatures?

    • @SwordsandBrushes
      @SwordsandBrushes  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's a basing tutorial, so to make it easier to film and see what's going on only the bases we're used.
      Anyone could then follow the techniques with either the glued miniture on the base from the start. Or glue them on at the end :)
