    You had said your dentist recommends how to prevent and heal cavities. In the US they tell you that you can't make them better once you have a cavity it just needs to be filled. I was curious what there tips for healing cavities were?

    • @RachelandJunAdventures
      @RachelandJunAdventures  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1559

      Most dentists don't bother educating patients on how to properly care for their teeth, and some choose to fix cavities that could still be healed with proper care just because they'll get more money. Jun managed to find us a REALLY good dentist here who is all about preventative care and educating his patients. I've learned a lot!!
      I'm totally going to make a full video about this because I think it's really important but I'll just give a quick type up of it now. You can only fix a cavity so many times until there's not enough tooth left to fix it again and the whole tooth has to go. My dentist says fixing a cavity is an absolute last resort, because you can't go back from that damage. But until a cavity gets to those final bad stages, you're still capable of reversing them on your own.
      Cavities are caused by bacteria digesting sugars and turning them into acids, which erode away at your teeth. There are several different types of bacteria that do this. Not everyone has the really bad one, so some people just naturally don't even get cavities.
      Every time you eat or drink something that's not water, the bacteria in your mouth start digesting that shiz and turning the pH balance of your mouth too acidic. Your enamel is weak during this period and this is when cavities can start forming. This acidic period lasts for about 30~45 minutes after you eat. Fortunately you have magic saliva that gradually returns the pH balance of your mouth back to normal, and then the minerals in your saliva start to remineralize the damage done to your teeth and actually reverse minor cavities.
      So there are a lot of things you can do to actually prevent AND fix cavities that have started forming:
      1. Eat no more than 3 times in a day. That means no snacking or drinking non- water beverages throughout the day. The more your put stuff in your mouth, the more often those bacteria can turn your mouth pH balance acidic and start causing damage. And the less time you give your saliva to work its magic and repair things. And of course, try not to eat sugar as much as possible.
      2. Chew xylitol gum after you eat. My dentist recommends us the double strength xylitol gum AND says we should chew two of them at once. As mentioned in this video, the bacteria try to eat it but they can't digest it so they die.
      3. Use flouride, which also provides the minerals your saliva needs to remineralize your teeth.
      4. Make sure you're brushing correctly and using enough toothpaste. Proper brushing isn't just going back and forth on your teeth like they show on tv, but using the front and rear tips of the toothbrush bristles at an angle to actually get in between your teeth. So instead of brushing parallel to your teeth, you're using the brush at an angle (twice--once using the back edge of the bristles and once using the front edge). It's hard to explain in text. :/ If you have a small mouth like me, you may even need to get a smaller toothbrush. Mine was too big to properly brush my very back teeth and now I use a lil baby-sized brush.
      5. You also should hopefully be producing a normal or above-average amount of saliva. Some people don't produce much saliva. :/ (My dentist actually tested us for this! lol) Chewing the xylitol gum a couple more times throughout the day can help get saliva moving more if you need it.
      For the first time in my life I actually had a cavity get better thanks to everything my dentist taught me!! But with invisalign my saliva can't get to my teeth so I'm having trouble taking care of them again. :/ That's why I'm going to such extreme measures with the flouride gel.

      Interestingly, my dentist did tell us the same basic things (we’re in Denver.) He gave us a translated article from Japanese as his reference. We don’t have double xylitol gum here, so I tried buying xylitol to add to my gum. But xylitol here comes in big pieces here and it’s hard. So, chewing is not the best. I’m also nervous about swallowing that much xylitol. If it kills your mouth bacteria, what does it do to your gut bacteria? I’d love to see a video on this. Also, I really liked your health video. It’s so fascinating to hear how other cultures handle health.

      @NethDugan 5 ปีที่แล้ว +87

      @@RachelandJunAdventures Also, it's a bad idea to brush your teeth whilst your saliva is dealing with the acidity in your mouth. You're just spreading the acid around and the teeth are already vulnerable at this time. Rinse your mouth with water for sure. But don't brush until like an hour after eating. Especially if you ate anything sugary.

    • @TessaNewberry

      My dentist definitely educates me on my teeth including cavities and prescribed me special fluoride toothpaste and it's helped so much with everything including calcium stains from my braces that I thought I was just going to have to live with. I think the key is just finding a good dentist. To add to Rachel's list, when she talks about the food affecting your enamel it's important not to brush your teeth right after you eat. You also don't want to brush too hard.

    You might not see this, but I work for a blood bank in the US and you can still donate platelets with a normal platelet count! The only thing that might change is how many units worth they might take at a single time. If your count is high enough they can take up to 4 units in a single donation, however the more they take out= the longer you are donating. Platelet donations can take 1.5 to 2 hours depending on how many units they are doing.

Like mentioned platelets can take up to 2 hours, plasma is 45 minutes to an hour, and 2RBC is 30 minutes.

      On the other hand there are portrait rights (Article 13 - “right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” - influenced by the german law)
      In a ruling in 2005, the Supreme Court stated that taking photos without consent is illegal if the extent of the violation of the subject’s personal rights exceeds the maximum acceptable according to social norms, while taking into consideration the social status of the people photographed, the content of activities, the location where filming took place, the photographers’ purpose, the way the pictures were taken, the necessity of capturing the images, and so on. The same applies for filming.
      The factors to be considered vary depending on what you try to record and how you do it, but the bottom line is that simply recording a sight in a public area for a limited time would be legally permissible, even if the record included passersby who happened to be there.

      I remember reading (or watching a vid? can't remember anymore, it was at the time of the whole Logan Paul disaster) about a case where a professional photographer took a photo of the Shibuya crossing like millions of other people probably have done too. The problem with that picture arose when he was selling the picture on his website and one of the people in the picture saw that. He recognized himself from the picture and took it to the court - turns out that he was going to meet his mistress at the time the picture was taken and didn't want his wife to find out about his affair. The guy won the case and the photographer had to pay for "invadig privacy" or some other legal claim similar to that.

    I can relate to your Invisalign experience. I got my teeth straightened with Invisalign back in 2013-14. Best $9000 I ever spent. Before I had it done, my smile had gotten lopsided due to a nasty crossbite and being born missing my upper lateral incisors ( teeth on either side of your two front teeth). After it was done, my smile was almost perfect and it felt a lot easier to move my facial muscles to make a happy expression. Big difference in my life. So hang in there! It's totally worth all the hard work.

      Seconded on the cleaning your teeth every time you eat thing. I went from two years of full metal braces to a further year and a half with Invisalign, I brushed and flossed twice a day and never had any issues with simply putting the trays back in directly after eating.
      Can't really brush them when you're out and about after a meal anyway. And i never did it at work either, not enough time on my breaks. :D

      Except for she mentions the lisp it gives her and how sometimes she can get past it but not lately...I notice it too like she has a mouth full of plastic. Worth it in the end to have teeth that work! Those side ones really move in the simulation wow! I I wonder if she had her wisdom teeth out and if that affected the side teeth positions.
      I wonder if she would like regular braces better...the invisalign are nice because they are less visible in general (but are still noticed) but they are suuuuch a hassle like she said every time you eat. Braces I think don't take as long, you deal with seeing them and some speech changes but I think much less maintenance... I never had braces but my nephews did. And my aunt got them oddly when she retired. She considered invisalign but went with traditional braces as for her it would be much shorter time with them and less hassle...I don't know which I would choose, got this far without them but some medications from being sick have affected my teeth so we shall see!
