Hi Jon, love your videos. I and my wife carry a whistle. Not only to attract esch other’s attention but also a means of getting rid of „ friendly“ locals who work in teams to pick your pockets - something I have come across quite a few southern european tourist spots. While one person is trying to engage you in conversation, the back up team proceeds to rob you …. Since the person engaging you and distracting you is quite persistent, literally blowing the whistle makes them and their team leave promptly because you are attracting a lot of attention- something they do not want. Now you may feel stupid , and bystanders may question your sanity but is very effective
Have to absolutely agree! My partner and I found ourselves lost in the mountains in Canada and that whistle legitimately saved our lives. I go absolutely no where without one now, especially with how compact they are. Someone was able to locate us deep in the bush thanks to our tiny clip whistles that are built into our packs. Cannot recommend enough!
Over many decades, I have experimented with lots of belt pouches and fanny packs for hiking. I always discard them for a lightweight backpack so I can carry an extra layer, water, food, etc.
All good and logical choices with well thought out reasoning. As a frequent hiker in the mountains of upstate New York, I usually trek with my dog. The need to carry potable water for both of us require a canteen. The power bank was a real eye-opener. Never considered one before but now I see how important it is. Thank you.
A kit that is the perfect example of lost in the UK versus lost in the States. There are swaths of wilderness remaining in the US that are so huge one must be prepared & equipped to self rescue. However it’s an excellent kit for holding it together overnight when a zig that was supposed to be a zag happens. The only thing I would add is a rechargeable laser pen for signaling. They easily penetrate tree cover and can be seen well over a mile. It wouldn’t even detract from the kit aesthetic. Another fine video, Jonathan
I've noticed that whenever a loadout video contains a ferro-rod, the person must strike it and make sparks. It is like an unwritten rule or to prove it is indeed works. Either way, great video and it has given me many ideas!
I was taught, decades ago, that you don't have that sort of pouch with outdoor stuff. The first 'layer' of stuff is on the body , close probably in a pocket ( whistle, compass, map, torch, knife , ferro rod and an old tobacco tin with small survival items and a mylar foil blanket) Then comes the belt kit with food, first aid pouch, water and mug. Pistol was optional (ha ha, actually a miniflare). Then finally the bergan with the 50 lbs of whatever.
Another well done piece. I continue to be amazed as my own kit has evolved how similar it is to yours, yet I learn much and take away great ideas from your videos every time. One evolution in my kit is carrying Extreme Post-It notes rather than other paper. The Extreme Post-It notes work will as reminders, notes left for others, trail markers; sticking without additional tape to any dry surface. And their size is convenient for EDC or emergency kit.
Excellent pouch. One suggestion would be a cheap mylar blanket and/or large plastic trash bag. Either could be used as emergency shelter combined with the cordage. Weight is next go nothing.
Are those playing card protectors? That’s genius! The more of your videos I watch, the more I’m convinced your channel is quite different from all the other carry channels. We have very similar carry tastes, so I’m getting lots of great ideas.
Another option for a AAA flashlight that is cheap and would add more capability and at a smaller size is the Fenix E01 V2.0 AAA. It has 3 modes: 100lm - 50min, 25lm - 4h50m, 5lm - 25 hours
One thing I like to take is a small tube of eyewash from a medical company, although any eye saline solution would work. So many times in the city, I've had some bit of dust or debris waft into my eye, especially in the underground. But each person's needs and situations are so different, it's really hard to make suggestions.
Nice video, once again. I haven’t read through all the comments, but it would be nice to have all of that along with a water bottle holder and space for an emergency blanket. Thank you for your insightful reviews and suggestions.
Looks just about perfect. I like the ALOX SA Farmer... a lot of tool in a very compact format. I would go with a Rovyvon torch, though. you have the battery bank to recharge it. Saves carrying the batteries. I loves my Rovyvon Aurora A1! I bought it after I saw you recommend it, and it never leaves my keychain. I think I would slip a small ASR ceramic razor in there also. I carry one in my wallet, and I use it more than my pocket knife. Super small and super cheap! Last thing, I promise. I would include two water purification tablets (Aquatabs or Katedyn) in your possibles pouch. Cheers Mate from across the pond.

Theres some tyvek jackets that can be better than the disposable,poncho. They are for chemical handling but are pretty sturdy and great wind barriers as well
add a small strip of 3M reflective vehicle marking tape or similar i can be useful to mark your position in an emergency or where you left someone/something to get back to them with a torch beam over distance.
Boy was I lucky to run across your videos! This is an excellent little hiking pack! I also have thoroughly enjoyed several of your other videos. You have some fresh ideas that I have not seen before. Like your style!!
Take a look at the clipper lighter. Use as a normal lighter then if you run out of fuel you can use it as sparker simular to the exotac nanosparker. It's refillable for fuel and flints. Available in plastic or metal casing.
A good posting .. thanks. I carry very much similar .. although more 'distributed' throughout .. my whistle hangs (albeit separately, together with my front door key) around my neck. The tweezers are on my Leatherman Micra / SAK, etc. The 'Space Pen' .. interesting. I have the 'poor man's version .. an HB Pencil. It worked in the Underground Gold Mining Industry in often less than ideal conditions and still does 😊. Once again, thanks for that .. something to 'check off' against my current setup. Take care ..
I love the kit. It is very similar to what I carry. I would add a zip tie to every one off you kits. I think you have everything else covered for most things besides multi day survival, but that is not the intention of your kits.

On the Victorinox Alox Farmer's cap lifter blade, not only is it a large screw driver, cap lifter, but the little notch is a *wire stripper* I don't think more than 30 people in the world use the wire stripper, but it is there. Great channel Jon, you got me as a new subscriber. 👍

Great video and nice kit. Would add some sort of vessel for carrying water and some water purification tablets. Even if the vessel is just a condom or plastic bag. Also I would we concerned about how waterproof the maxpedition pouch is as protecting the phone charger and some other items would be a priority for me.

I wear my whistle on my paracord bracelet with a small compass (not the best) and a fire starter. I have a real good compass in my bug out bag in the car all the time.
Lots of stuff, but I'm missing a space blanket, plastic bag and micropur and aluminum foil. The space blanket is for me after the lighter the most important survival tool for outdoor. Then comes a zip bag to fill water and clean with Mikropur. With the aluminum foil you can build a container and boil water.
I carry a Victorinox Hiker in my wandering kit. In my case a bumpack that transforms into a backpack if necessary. But i also have a knife in my smock parka and a Victorinox Fieldmaster in my pants pocket. When i saw your pack i thought the powerbank was a torch. I have a solar powerbank on the outside of all my kit, also usable as a backup torch. I would put in a better compass unless like me you carry one around your neck.
Agree with one of your other commenters ... consider swapping out the Farmer and Leatherman for a SwissChamp. Or if that’s to bulky for the minimalist approach there’s the Fieldmaster which has knife, scissors, saw and an awl... but then so does the Farmer X Alox 😂 Great vid. Checking out your others 👍

Antihistamine is also useful for insect bites and stings. If, say, a wasp stings you, and you take antihistamine immediately, it will neutralize your inflammatory reaction. It can be a lifesaver.
No rain/warmth shelter or water purification tablets? I don’t understand why no one includes a space blanket or ideally a space poncho in their kits. Hypothermia is a real danger even in the summer especially at night when wet and windy. My micro hiking kit includes: space poncho, water purification tablets, whistle & signal mirror, waterproof matches and kindling, compass, basic meds/pills, and a water bottle (for current use and as emergency container). The whole thing packs into a zippered phone case and can fit in a pocket or clip/slide on belt. Many of the other items in your list I’d consider nice to have, even the knife. One should power off the phone when lost and only turn it on on tops of hills to get signal and send a message.
I found with the victorinox saw that it is sharp and does cut wood but realistically the thickness it can cope with you could just snap the twig with your hands.
I don't agree - with a bit of patience you can get trough wood between 5 to 10 cm diameter. That's so thick you can't break it even with your foot. In normal instances I always find enough small wood when hiking - but we are talking about an emergency when your exhausted or maybe even hurt
Good suggestion. I've been on the lookout for a AAA sized rechargeable that would fit in the loops on this pack. There is some benefit from having a power source that can be 'purchased' but rechargeable batteries usually have a longer battery life which would be preferred.

I was reading about how some of them are ear piercing to be right next to but the sound doesn't travel very far. Also do you think you could review the flash lights with a taser/tazer on them. I have one for when i go for walks my neighborhood is not the best in terms of loose scary dogs and sometimes leary people. Are they legal in your neck of the world? Hi and thanks for the feedback. Yes I think it would be safe - it's wax impregnated fibrous material - so would need some form of external ignition (fire or spark) to burn and the fact that it is an enclosed tin means that there is a barrier against ignition and also the lack of oxygen with the lid closed would also prevent a fire - so pretty safe in my view.
Although the viewer can decide for him/herself, it would be useful to state the type of hiking this EDC is designed for, e.g. short distance or mountainous terrain etc. Also you do realize quite often when you are hiking you don’t get cell phone signals?
I carry a freznel lens with me, not just for fire lighting, but also as temporary reading glasses. Small enough to slip into a wallet. One question how do you prevent that all important power pack from getting damaged due to rain?
Great idea with fresnel lens 👍 I put a small bit of Gorilla tape over the usb b ports to keep rain out. I fold over the end so it can be removed easily and reused.

Thanks for the concern - yes, left eye does flicker - I have had it checked out and it looks like there is some nerve interference - I'm told there is nothing really that can be done - it can be very annoying.
That's all fine, but where do you put your map and compass? Because no-one in their right mind is going to go hiking without a proper paper map and a decent compass...

It was better when phones had swappable batteries as carrying a charged phone battery was smaller and simpler than a powerbank, lless than half the space and volume. Difficult to get new decent phones with replaceable batteries these days.

Thanks for the kind feedback - there are very cheap polythene ponchos available on Amazon that will do in an emergency - I often carry these for others in a group who might not be as prepared - but it would be nice to find a quality one. I have a Arcteryx FL (fast and light) waterproof but still not super compact.

Nice. I’d probably replace the Farmer with a SwissChamp and not bother carrying the Leatherman. I’ve found the magnifying glass to be useful for removing splinters and stingers and the small blade is perfect to me for detail work. I know you said it’s a minimalist first aid kit but a couple of ibuprofen and Benadryl wouldn’t add much bulk and could come in handy. One suggestion, given all the metal in the possibles bag, I’d put a little tape on the ends of the battery to keep it from discharging. Great video!
i am unsure on why you need a special kit for this.. a knife i always have on me, especially when hikibg and most other stuff i have in my edc.. the whistle is nice but thats included in my backpack for example

The REAMER on the SAK Farmer is also a GREAT ferro rod striker and it won't fold up onto your fingers or hand.

We have Ticks in California, and a tweezer won't always remove the entire insect successfully. I carry a dedicated Tick Remover from The Tick Patrol.

I carry a few insect repellent wipes. They are convenient and light weight. Much better than carrying a spray can.

I'd recommend using the energizer lithium aaa in the light cause they last longer and don't leak.

I keep a hank of 100 lb test fishing line it’s very small and strong also some water tablets to drop in your water bottle if needed

Would use an iodine wipe for boo boo kit for wounds and save the alcohol wipe for cleaning other thing like hands knives.
The only thing I would change is a space blanket and a tube of ca glue

Agree with one of your other commenters ... consider swapping out the Farmer and Leatherman for a SwissChamp. Or if that’s to bulky for the minimalist approach there’s the Fieldmaster which has knife, scissors, saw and an awl... but then so does the Farmer X Alox 😂 Great vid. Checking out your others 👍

Antihistamine is also useful for insect bites and stings. If, say, a wasp stings you, and you take antihistamine immediately, it will neutralize your inflammatory reaction. It can be a lifesaver.

No rain/warmth shelter or water purification tablets?
I don’t understand why no one includes a space blanket or ideally a space poncho in their kits. Hypothermia is a real danger even in the summer especially at night when wet and windy.
My micro hiking kit includes: space poncho, water purification tablets, whistle & signal mirror, waterproof matches and kindling, compass, basic meds/pills, and a water bottle (for current use and as emergency container). The whole thing packs into a zippered phone case and can fit in a pocket or clip/slide on belt.
Many of the other items in your list I’d consider nice to have, even the knife. One should power off the phone when lost and only turn it on on tops of hills to get signal and send a message.

I found with the victorinox saw that it is sharp and does cut wood but realistically the thickness it can cope with you could just snap the twig with your hands.
I don't agree - with a bit of patience you can get trough wood between 5 to 10 cm diameter. That's so thick you can't break it even with your foot. In normal instances I always find enough small wood when hiking - but we are talking about an emergency when your exhausted or maybe even hurt

when I saw the cylinder I first thought it was bear spray, then comes out as a powerbank.
If you switch out the flashlight to a rechargable your power bank could be used to recharge.
Good suggestion. I've been on the lookout for a AAA sized rechargeable that would fit in the loops on this pack. There is some benefit from having a power source that can be 'purchased' but rechargeable batteries usually have a longer battery life which would be preferred.

Hi Jonathon, THANK YOU for you reviews. Ive purchased many things as per your suggestions. Do you think you might do a review on whistles. I was reading about how some of them are ear piercing to be right next to but the sound doesn't travel very far. Also do you think you could review the flash lights with a taser/tazer on them. I have one for when i go for walks my neighborhood is not the best in terms of loose scary dogs and sometimes leary people. Are they legal in your neck of the world? Hi and thanks for the feedback. Yes I think it would be safe - it's wax impregnated fibrous material - so would need some form of external ignition (fire or spark) to burn and the fact that it is an enclosed tin means that there is a barrier against ignition and also the lack of oxygen with the lid closed would also prevent a fire - so pretty safe in my view.

Although the viewer can decide for him/herself, it would be useful to state the type of hiking this EDC is designed for, e.g. short distance or mountainous terrain etc. Also you do realize quite often when you are hiking you don’t get cell phone signals?

I carry a freznel lens with me, not just for fire lighting, but also as temporary reading glasses. Small enough to slip into a wallet. One question how do you prevent that all important power pack from getting damaged due to rain?
Great idea with fresnel lens 👍 I put a small bit of Gorilla tape over the usb b ports to keep rain out. I fold over the end so it can be removed easily and reused.

Thanks for the concern - yes, left eye does flicker - I have had it checked out and it looks like there is some nerve interference - I'm told there is nothing really that can be done - it can be very annoying.
The best EDC item is charging you phone before you go, and then not using it if you don't have to!

I don’t have a SE so hard to be sure. I’ve not had any issues so far though.
It was better when phones had swappable batteries as carrying a charged phone battery was smaller and simpler than a powerbank, lless than half the space and volume. Difficult to get new decent phones with replaceable batteries these days.
especially if you need extended functionality like navigation

Hi Jon, loving your videos. I wonder if you've found a micro pack waterproof coat on your travels. I thinking of something really light/thin but waterproof that you can wear in a sudden downpour but would fit into a small EDC bag..?
Thanks for the kind feedback - there are very cheap polythene ponchos available on Amazon that will do in an emergency - I often carry these for others in a group who might not be as prepared - but it would be nice to find a quality one. I have a Arcteryx FL (fast and light) waterproof but still not super compact.
@@JonGadget I guess a reusable poncho would work. Not keen on the single use ones, but something a little durable might work. I have a lightweight RAB waterproof, which is OK for fitting in my backpack but still a little bulky for my shoulder bag. Thanks for the idea, the search continues..👍😊
Maybe a thermal foil blanket. Tiny but may be helpful. Throw in a few KFC towelettes.
Foil blanket is quite big for this - but worth carrying in a bag.

Nice. I’d probably replace the Farmer with a SwissChamp and not bother carrying the Leatherman. I’ve found the magnifying glass to be useful for removing splinters and stingers and the small blade is perfect to me for detail work. I know you said it’s a minimalist first aid kit but a couple of ibuprofen and Benadryl wouldn’t add much bulk and could come in handy. One suggestion, given all the metal in the possibles bag, I’d put a little tape on the ends of the battery to keep it from discharging. Great video!

i am unsure on why you need a special kit for this.. a knife i always have on me, especially when hikibg and most other stuff i have in my edc.. the whistle is nice but thats included in my backpack for example
