I wrote the music for the song. Wanted to do something in 6/4, like Otis Redding.... remember that the early television was not "earth music" - Ahmet Erdigan
Thanks, Richard, For the great music over the years. I have Alchemy on vinyl and played it before your show at Amoeba Hollywood last week. I still have Misty Eyes in my head and it's going to be there for awhile. I am reading your autobiography and love all the stories and your insights into human nature that make an autobiography something to learn from.
RIP Tom Verlaine. I remember seeing them in 2019 thinking it would be my last chance, and they played this masterful song which I had never heard before then. I'm happy to have that memory associated with this song. Tom had absolute control over his guitar that night. RIP to one of the great underground musicians
Aww, this is so beautiful. Tom and Richard were so great together musically, the Neon Boys and early Television songs were just amazing, and so magical really ... I have a vinyl record of Neon Boys demos that I bought at a second hand record store, it's SO cool. The record itself is made of clear see-through vinyl :D coolest record I own except my Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers limited edition PICTURE DISCS hanging on my wall ;) I know you're all jealous
Re: the lyric ... won't try to decipher the rest, but the first line is clearly "First time I seen you" ... which sets up the whole Romeo & Juliet thing ... great post, thanks!
thanks for all the downloads! The early work is fascinatingly varied and sounds pretty good. also thanks for the interviews and articles. The other thing I found whilst around here was the Terry Ork loft video. Wow.
Great upload. Took advantage of those links you offered in the description and this comments section is a real goldmine for interesting stuff. Shame about the Hell recordings getting taken down. These early TV recordings have a real crazy ramshackle on-the-edge-of-collapse feeling to them. I love it. Saw Television in Brixton last night and they encored with this song. Was a beautiful feeling.
I just came from seeing Television at the 9:30 Club in DC. They played this song. He said that it didn't make their first album, but maybe it'll make it to their next. :)
Going to see them in Boston tonight. Very excited. Will be my first time. They are part of my Bucket list of bands to see live. I know Verlaine's voice is shot now (based on the live footage of recent gigs), but his vocals are secondary to their playing imo. Although his singing IS distinctive, it sound like age has limited his range and he has to force his voice. And also, thanks for the extensive ABOUT section info you provided. As well as this track. I've never heard it before.
@shashwati Well, I'm glad Tom &/or his record companies don't seem as possessive as Hell seems to be about his Television material. I've read Tom & Hell got to be on semi-friendly terms again. But I recall a Hell quote from the late '70s that expressed his feelings about Tom at that time: "It's not a feud, it's a cold hatred"!
A nice surprise Television resurrected this ancient, rarely played song at their April 2013 Sao Paulo show, & someone (Alexandre Matias) upped a video of it to YT!
GB, Your question got me checking a boots list, & although there's no apparent record of shows from Japan from their '70s "heyday", boots exist of at least 4 Television shows in Japan from after the band re-formed: - 1992-09-04 - Club Quattro, Osaka - 1992-09-06 - Nakano Sun Plaza, Tokyo - 2002-07-26 - Fuji Rock Fest, Naeba - 2003-09-25 - Shibuya Ax, Tokyo
I just upped a good recording of another Television rarity, a song I don't think has appeared on YT before. The upload's title is: Television - Let Me Out - CBGBs 1976, Apr. 16 ( rare, unreleased song)
Anyone interested in old/rare mag. & music paper articles/interviews with Tom Verlaine & his Television band mates Lloyd, Hell, Ficca, & Smith should check the video description info. here. I've left a link here to a downloadable file of approx. 60 articles dating from '74 - '90 I collected between 1978 & 1990. Plus a link to scans of scarce poetry book "The Night", by Tom Verlaine & Patti Smith, published 1976.
@hurting I doubted the spelling too,but didn't bother to check for sure or correct Lloyd. Richard Lloyd's an ace guitar player, not necessarily an ace typist or speller.Who's Ertegun to him anyway? A guy he probably met once, who maybe signed some hot bands to Atlantic, but rejected his band. Check lloyd206's posted comments at this YT vid: "Television - Mistakes" uploaded by Singluder, explaining in detail about his leaving the band. The plausible details are persuasive it's the real Richard Lloyd.
To those that love this song: listen to You Don't Miss Your Water by Otis Redding. I believe that this is what the band were listening to when this song was written.
A link to your website, lowerthirdenterpriseDOTcom has been added to the video description here so those interested can check out your fine 1970s photos of CBGB bands, & purchase your limited edition photos.
@Bobjb999 I wish I could say I'm surprised...From all his written work and interviews and that, he really seems to want to leave behind his Television days (which seemed quite a degree better than the Voidoids days, with all the fights for money and things). He'd said something somewhere about feeling like he was *almost* betrayed by Verlaine, especially since it was Hell that brought him into rock 'n' roll. Well, more power to 'em, but that doesn't leave the fans anything, does it.
@Allrightteam Let's see,if you dig up an old Stones' tape from their beginnings in '62, & compare it to Television`s beautifully played & produced album,Marquee Moon, you might think "The Stones, a 3rd rate Television?" Your perspective's skewed, dude. Anyway, this song doesn't even represent Television at their '74 best. "Horizontal Ascension" is superior, imo. For a band still learning to play in '74 (Verlaine later said the band didn't gel till '76), there's some nascent genius apparent here.
Sometimes I see you with your shiny, dirty, black hair and your clothes, your clothes, they just don't make no more Well, it was, it was, hard to look at you But it was quite clear But how do I explain it I say...? (can't make out) But you know it's kinda like Romeo and Juliet Well, you went away off somewhere You went away somewhere But, I'm a gonna tell ya... But, I'm a gonna tell ya... But, I'm a gonna tell you... I saved so much up to make this trip You just turn out and give me the slip I'm gonna check out of your little bathhouse check....? (can't make out) I've believe I gotta go to Paris (I think he starts naming different places in this section, but the guitars kinda drown out what he's saying) Baby...go to downtown..? ...............to the poor house ?????? I gotta go down to the future I gotta check outta the past I gotta break through to a new dimension I gotta.....? I gotta.....? I gotta go to Mississippi and New Orleans (sounds like, not sure) I'm a gonna find you I'm a gonna find you Say I'm a gonna find you Some sweet day...
@shashwati Too bad Hell's intent on ensuring Hell-era Television songs,at least ones Hell co-wrote&sings on,are kept as rare as possible on YT.I've had no trouble re. copyright claims on any Television uploads-except for two with Hell singing.Television doing "Blank Generation" with Hell singing I once uploaded but it got spiked .Yesterday,"Excitement",a '74 Television song Hell co-wrote&sings on got spiked due to a copyright infringement claim lodged by "Richard Meyers"(Hell's real name).#&@%!
+yuckfaceyates Tom sings here. It's too dangerous to upload to yt any Television recordings where Hell sings songs he wrote or co-wrote. In Television, in cases where Hell wrote lyrics, Hell sang them, & there were quite a few Hell sung Television songs in the early days. Unfortunately, Hell has had a history of lodging copyright complaints against yt uploads of Television recordings with him singing. Just one such copyright claim immediately penalizes ones yt Channel & for a year one's not allowed to upload videos over 15 minutes long. Three copyright claims in a year result in ones entire yt Channel being permanently removed. My Channel got penalized by Hell before. So, now I'm like "once Hell-bitten, twice Hell-shy." In contrast, Tom seems to tolerate such yt uploads okay, & Richard Lloyd has even left a few helpful comments at my yt uploads of Television rarities. As the Brits say, Bloody Hell!
I don't understand why people bring up Velvet Underground and doors when they talk about Television. The difference is huge and decisive. Genius is TV, not anybody else in those names.
they were cool but a bit pretentious for their own good...that is what I remember of them..The New York dolls were more people friendly that television or the Talking Heads' these last two bands were always too self conscious, while playing an image of being "simple" ...they were not people friendly...
I wrote the music for the song. Wanted to do something in 6/4, like Otis Redding.... remember that the early television was not "earth music" - Ahmet Erdigan

otherworldly solo
Elektra boss huh

Richard, my brother - your solo on this is soooooo perfect. So perfect.
I will tell you that to your mug when I see you next.
Aww, this is so beautiful. Tom and Richard were so great together musically, the Neon Boys and early Television songs were just amazing, and so magical really ...

So fucken sad to learn of Verlaine passing tonight 😢 RIP happy we saw you play

best thing I heard of the early television
I just came from seeing Television at the 9:30 Club in DC. They played this song. He said that it didn't make their first album, but maybe it'll make it to their next. :)
Thank you for posting this, man I sure miss those days back in old NYC.
Hey Richard, great to hear from you on here.
Great track from one of my favourite bands. And comments from Richard Lloyd! Subscribed to you and Richard.
Brilliant guitars. Major under-rated influence
Going to see them in Boston tonight. Very excited. Will be my first time. They are part of my Bucket list of bands to see live. Brilliant - these recordings with Hell in the band are so rare....
Now THIS is what I call a proper TH-cam post.
This is so amazing
great song Richard, good on you, best wishes from Italy

thanks for the material

That solo is trying so hard to get there, it missed when it got there. And then it tried to back up by adding more notes.
I just love this little clip
I just upped a good recording of another Television rarity, a song I don't think has appeared on YT before. The upload's title is: Television - Let Me Out - CBGBs 1976, Apr. 16 ( rare, unreleased song)
They looked sooo cool
Thank you for sharing this!
You can tell its Television by the first note
this song is amazing, really, thank you man!
a fckn gem

Well, more power to 'em, but that doesn't leave the fans anything, does it.

and "Misty Eyes" ?
U Tube wont let me send you my website
@Bobjb999 How would Richard Lloyd not even know how to spell Ahmet Ertegun's name?
He dropped outta school and is self educated as is Tom V.
Enough idolatry; it's nice Lloyd is commenting, but, uh, get a grip, eh? Anyway, tx for posting this.

Re-read my post. I think you missed stuff the first time around.
Someone was playing a different tune ...
I don't understand why people bring up Velvet Underground and doors when they talk about Television. The difference is huge and decisive. Genius is TV, not anybody else in those names.
The Doors are pop music compared to The VU and Television!
All 3 geniuses in their own right.
Epic Years 💉💉🎸🎸🎵🎼 yeah 💥
i dont know this fact that television could be kinda blusy
I'm a boy
Bit your ma not admit it....lol
