'Big Screen VAR' controversy at Sheffield Wednesday as Byers goal ruled out against Plymouth

  • Sheffield Wednesday ran out 1-0 winners against Plymouth in a top of the table clash at Hillsborough Stadium on 4th February.
    However, the Owls will rightly feel aggrieved that a second goal by George Byers was ruled out nearly a minute on from the strike.
    Referee John Busby eventually disallowed the effort after discussion with linesman.
    Wednesday are adamant that the officials only arrived at the decision after watching the replay on the big screen in the stadium.
    Just as a reminder, League One games aren't governed by VAR technology and as such replays shouldn't be used to influence the referees thinking.
    Make your own mind up from a collection of video footage from the day and the iFollow commentary which includes reference to the role of the big screen.

    Officials need reprimanding but given the EFL's attitude to the Owl's nothing will be done

    It was very strange ... as an argyle fan it was minutes until we realised it was disallowed...

      If you read the rules Gregory (the man in the goal) is not offside. He’s way past the line of the last man, but does not interfere, which is defined as obstructing the progress or view of the goalkeeper, therefore is not offside. If you look at the rashford incident for United against city in the last derby, it is similar in the way he never touched the ball or interfered in the play.

    I have to say that there is 0 evidence in this video even hints as to that the linesmans uses the replay to change his decision. imho the goal was rightly ruled out, However thats isnt the point of this video so lets ignore that for a second... What looks like happens is the ref doesnt know if the player is offside but believes hes classed as "interfering" and the Linesman knows the he is offside but isnt aware if hes interfering. Thats what i believe is happening... I will add however, if the lino did use the replay to make a decision then that is wrong and the goal should of stood.

    • @anthonydeakin3834
      @anthonydeakin3834 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Plymouth bench pointed the 4th official to the video replay, he relayed that to the ref, who then stopped walking to our players and slowed down and went to the linesman. The fact is that Gregory did not connect with the ball and as he jumped the ball was past their keeper. I could show you photographic proof but you cant post pictures on comments on here
