How to practice jazz standards - Autumn leaves - Minor section
Do you want different ways to practice jazz standards that develop all of the fundamental skills you need to truly improvise?
Of course we start by memorising small sections of music that we could call vocabulary but as we begin to internalise these elements, we truly develop our ear/finger coordination as well as giving ourselves the best chance of hearing something meaningful to play.
So, I will share with you the different ways I have learnt from my own experiences as well as studying the methods of some of the great jazz improvisation teachers, including Bobby Shew and Hal Galper…
The bonus of practicing this way is you get to choose what you want to practice!
Simply listen to your favourite player, identify a cool sounding part of the solo, work out what they did through analysis and then practice in in a goal setting fashion and do so in a way where you will just hear it!

    Great lesson. Thanks.
    11. 1235 patterns are usually referred to as the Coltrane pattern. 12. Playing the arpeggio in that pattern Barry Harris and others call it 'pivoting'.
