Even though he never got to do those things he was still knocking them dead right up until the end and that’s my point.

The best is always a matter of taste. What in my opinion make the versions he pulled of during his last tour and at other occasions better then this one is the amazing shift he did form A to D into E in the ending phrase of "I would never ever hurt, hurt you". Something that shouldn't be possible with a baritone voice as Elvis'. This makes Elvis' voice a baritone and tenor all in one and these versions really show that miracle. That's why, in my opinion, these versions are better then this one. Count up the terrible state he was in at his last tour and the pain he was in makes it even more stunning.

Sixty years ago today on March 20th, 1961, "Surrender" by Elvis Presley peaked at #1 {for 2 weeks} on Billboard's Top 100 chart...
"Surrender" also reached #1 in Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, Belgium, New Zealand, South Africa, and Spain...
It peaked at #3 on Billboard's Hot R&B Singles chart...
Between 1956 and 2003 the Tupelo, Mississippi native had one hundred fifty-two records on the Top 100 chart, thirty-five made the Top 10 with eighteen reaching #1...
He just missed having five more #1 records when his "Wear My Ring Around Your Neck" {1958}, "A Fool Such As I" {1959}, "Can't Help Falling In Love" {1961}, "Return To Sender" {1962}, and "Burning Love" {1972}, all peaked at #2...
And his "One Broken Heart For Sale" {1963}, "(Such An) Easy Question" {1965}, "I'm Yours" {1965}, and "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me" {1970} all peaked at #11, thus just missing having four more Top 10 records...
Sadly, The King passed away at the young age of 42 on August 16th, 1977...
    May he R.I.P.
And from the 'For What It's Worth' department, the remainder of Billboard's Top 10 on March 20th, 1961:
    At #2. "Pony Time" by Chubby Checker {the #1 record for the three previous weeks}
#3. "Don't Worry" by Marty Robbins
#4. "Where The Boys Are" by Connie Francis
#5. "Dedicated To The One I Love" by The Shirelles
#6. "Apache" by Jørgen Ingmann and His Guitar
    #7. "Wheels" by The String-A-Longs
#8. "Ebony Eyes" by The Everly Brothers
#9. "Walk Right Back" by The Everly Brothers
#10. "Baby Sittin' Boogie" by Buzz Clifford

He went for that note at the end, and the tempo was a bit slower thanks to Larry London which gave it a more soulful feel. This is tremendous, thank you.

Wow, HURT, Such gutwrenching and profound lyrics, only someone who has truely experienced deep, heartaching and truely heartbreaking hurt could deliver these vocals with with intense believe ability. Elvis had suffered so much heartache and and heartbreak both with his disallusioning career and his own personal situations, he didn't have to dig too deep to let his unique interpretation of the lyrics come flooding out.
His vocal prowess here spoke for itself as always, , and the slight quivering on the end note simply added more gravitas and poignancy to the narrative. Omg was he tearing out his heartstrings here, his pain was palpable, he,d began to accept at this stage that all had not been as he had thought, and me personally I think he realised that those he,d thought as his life savers had merely been his life takers, in more ways than he could ever have imagined.
Never to be equalled or surpassed.

I agree with what you said in your comment with that being said if you listen to the final note he hits it's very unique. not to say it's necessarily better than any other version but on top of that it does seem to be the closest to the original recording in The jungle room. I debate whether it is truly the best version ever but I understand why he thinks that. like I said go back and listen to that note he gets at the end. I know other versions he does hit more impressive notes but there's just something unique powerful and awesome about the note that he hits at the end of this version

As always, awesome video! I always enjoy watching. Anyways, I was listening to the 1976 New Year's Eve concert and while singing It's Funny How Time Slips Away, Elvis takes part of the song up an octave and hits some really high notes. I figured you may want to check it out
