    I watched a documentary about Leonardo da Vinci, and it’s interesting how they compare his early portraits with the Mona Lisa. His studies of human anatomy, optical illusions, and color studies really show how much the Mona Lisa looks and feels human.
    The use of smears and other optical illusions I’d argue do the opposite (showing information) in Indivisible, but again it just *feels* right, and makes the characters feel more “real.”

    • @timothymclean
      @timothymclean 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Smears might obscure details of motion and character design, but that doesn't mean they can't convey information. I don't know much about Indivisible's mechanics, but smear frames are obviously-different enough from other frames that they make a good place to put the mechanical effects of something. The moment an attack deals damage is an obvious example.

    I really like the turning animations myself. When I first noticed Ajna's, I just turned her in place for a while to soak it all in.
    Unfortunately, it still ends in a sprite-flip like every character is ambidextrous, so it loses a little of its impact when you notice that.
    I'm glad you slow-mo'd the Zebei arrow shot. Every time the battle would end with a freeze-frame on the end of that animation, I wanted a better look at how he got there.

    I don't have much else to contribute since your the animation expert, but something fun to point out. Qadiras entire moveset and animations seemingly are a big send up to Captain America from the Marvel vs Capcom series. Many of her attacks resemble his, such as Charging Star and Stars and Stripes. They even have similar multiple smear effects in place. Watch some gameplay footage of Cap in Marvel Vs Capcom 1, 2 or 3 and you'll see exactly what I mean. It just goes to show how much love of fighting games and attention to detail that Lab Zero puts into their games

      They actually explain _why_ they're not on-screen all the time. The main character has some sort of psychic pocket-dimension in her head, and the allies she recruits basically just live in there. I think she can also hear their thoughts and stuff when they're inside. Or something like that. Definitely more of an explanation thought up to justify gameplay, rather than the other way around, but an explanation is an explanation.

    I was a backer of Indivisible. I absolutely love the characters, overall full-of-life feeling, and the smaller animations like the turnarounds in combat and such, the character artists/animators did an amazing job for sure. Unfortunately some of the enemy balancing(or lack-thereof) completely cause my play-through to come to a halt.

      Which ones? They've said they're working on some rebalancing post release. Was it the iron kingdom grunts in port maerifa? They're tuned way too high for the point in the game they are so it takes forever to kill them.
      If it's others, well, I recommend learning the combo system more since it's pretty easy to steamroll most enemies in two turns max once you get a good combo going.

    • @AStandsForFrench
      @AStandsForFrench 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@smolblockboi the worm boss is super divisive in my experience, like I've watched a few LP's of the game and beaten it myself of course, and I feel like half of people get completely ganked by the wizard teleporting constantly and either haven't learned to block out of combat yet or aren't good at it; or they totally steamroll it by just dashing into him repeatedly and killing him without him teleporting away or seeing the worm more than once or twice. Mine was one of the former, then the latter on the second attempt.
      I heartily recommend giving it another go. those are definitely the worst combat parts of the game in my experience, and imo the story and character interactions are worth it. outside of the resolution of the iron kingdom and a couple bits that seemed glitchy in kaanul's story wrapup, it was pretty satisfying, and the finale was great. you'll also get to see some really crazy enemies and bosses later on, including a completely hand-drawn screen-filling boss which just totally gobsmacked me

    Animation and stylization are indeed amazing, and it's a shame to see that the game industry is still chasing photorealism and ever more unappealing bland designs instead of focusing on the freedom and the imagination that the videogame medium can provide.
    That, and there's a depressingly large amount of people that seem to think that anything that doesn't strictly adhere to human anatomy is automatically "bad art".

    • @VideoGameAnimationStudy
      @VideoGameAnimationStudy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can't say I've encountered anyone who thinks non-anatomy is bad art, if I'm honest.
      Also, I don't mind part of the games industry pursuing photorealism in games, that's a really interesting channel to go down and it'll be fascinating to see where we are in ten years.
      It'd be bland if that's all the games industry was chasing, but the industry is so diverse that's there's enough development in all areas to please all audiences, so I wouldn't say it was a shame.

    The animation is stellar, and I'm also in love with pretty much all the character designs. THIS is how you do diversity in video games. Every character, no matter their skin color, size, shape, pronouns, or anything else really, is given a chance to shine. Plus I absolutely dig the fact there's lots of feminine guy characters and masculine women characters. I know I'll likely get shit for a comment like this, but who cares? The world is a very diverse place with all kinds of people. So you can't even make the argument that the diversity in the cast isn't realistic.

    • @jessiehogue.
      @jessiehogue. 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't you love it when people whine about the lack of realism of a solid amount of diversity... in a game about a fantasy universe where magic, monsters, superhuman powers and a girl who absorbs people in her head are all a thing, heh?

    • @bugjams
      @bugjams 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jessiehogue.
      Okay, but fantasy is always based in reality. We can't imagine anything that _isn't_ based on something we already know. Unless you make all your characters blue, or green or something, race is an issue that _will_ come up, and you _will_ need an answer for how to deal with it.
      If anything, having a game with well-written, deep and diverse characters, _is unrealistic,_ because so much media today struggles with diversity and representation. Usually minorities are treated as joke characters, or get killed off in the first season. Or when a show tries to be inclusive, the writers only seem to focus on a character's race or sexuality, instead of giving them an in-depth character.
      It's more rare and refreshing to see a game that does diversity _right._ I'm not saying every single show or game has to be diverse. But those that try to be often fail miserably at it. Which makes this game all the more better.

    • @jessiehogue.
      @jessiehogue. 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bugjams ...All true... which doesn't change a thing to my point. It is completely nonsensical for people to complain about there being diversity in a game because 'realism' when they are willing to suspend their disbelief about everything else. People who do, have issues.

    • @bugjams
      @bugjams 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jessiehogue.
      No, it does change a thing about your point. Not all fantasy is escapism. And lots of fantasy has a _message._ Like Lord of the Rings, or Star Wars, they all have themes and messages that relate to the real world.
      Some game developers want one of their messages to be that inclusivity is good. That diversity is good. That people are not worse, or weird, for being different. That's perfectly acceptable to have in a fantasy setting.
      Again, saying _every single movie or game_ has to be diverse isn't fair to say either, because maybe they don't have a message that relates to diversity, or the setting doesn't call for it. But it is a fair critique that anyone can make, especially with how some games treat minorities. Even more so when how a group of people are treated _clashes_ with the message of the game. Like if your game is about working together to overcome obstacles, but the game treats allies of a certain race or gender like they're less valuable than others.
      Diversity also helps open up more worldbuilding opportunities. If you have characters of all kinds of ethnicities from all parts of your world, that gives you more reason to explore each area in-depth. If they were all the same, why bother explaining the lore behind more than one location?

    • @jessiehogue.
      @jessiehogue. 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bugjams Neither of the things you said were part of my point, therefore, no, it absolutely doesn't change a thing to it. I never said, nor implied, that all fantasy was escapism, nor did I state or suggest that fantasy held no message.
      I simply stated that to say that diversity is unrealistic when so many other, actually unrealistic elements get a pass, is nonsense. In and of itself, based solely on the words I used here. Nothing more, nothing less. No hidden meanings, no additional thoughts or deeply reflected philosophical concerns here. Just, 'Diversity is hell of a lot more realistic than magic and monsters'. If you don't agree with that much, then we're gonna have to agree to disagree, be cause you're not convincing me otherwise anytime soon.
      Again, I'm not saying anything you said - aside from insisting what you said changed anything to my statement - was wrong. I actually agree with everything you said afterwards. I'm just saying that it has nothing to do with my point/statement mentioned above, and I still - though respectfully - stand by said statement 100%.
