Hell of a lot of talent on that stage. But there was something else there too that night. There was an energy and spirit produced by artists completely immersed in the moment, touched briefly by a magic that happens only rarely on a stage and in our lives. Thank you, OCMS, Rawling and Welch for giving us this.
The Weight to me was The Band. Then saw this. The group has amazing musicality that matches Garth Hudson and they sing so well and harmonize in such a great way.
As a child growing up in my house The Band was a staple in a daily diet of wonderful music. Whenever I hear this song it always reminds me of good times, great friends and contentment. I had heard other versions before but they never evoked the same emotions The Band did. I have to say this version does. Truthfully, with all respect to the legends, I think I like this version better. Please come to Canada Gillian and bring all of your wonderful friends with you.
Saw these guys (Gillian, David & OCMS) at a gig over here in Ireland a few yrs back, got to chat to a lot of them afterwards. Hands down the best gig I've ever been to!! It's a shame that so many people my own age won't listen to a good music just because it's not "cool" or mainstream.
I saw Old Crow, Gillian and David perform this at Hardly, Strictly Bluegrass Festival in 2009 and it did indeed give me chills...(it's as good as any of the dozen or so times I saw the Band perform it over the years). It's so great to have this video to relive their performance.
It does not get any better than a great cover of the best song around. This song is a perfect mix of blues, country, folk, bluegrass, and pop. It is the perfect example of a mixing pot of the American experience.
During one of the interviews in The Last Waltz, I assumed it was Martin Scorsese, asked them all about how they came up with their style of music. Levon answers, it's a mixture of all of it. Southern Blues, Jazz, country, bluegrass, and you can put all those Styles together and it comes out as rock and roll. But they certainly played every other style of music out there, and they did it all Justice! It's too bad the band didn't stay together for another 40 years.
This song is one of the best ever written. I don't believe I've ever heard a bad version of it. the Weight brings out the best in whoever's playing/singing it. I'm loving the new release featuring Robbie Ringo and musicians from all over the world 🎶✌❤😷🎶🍏
What a tribute to "the Band", and Gillian, has she ever sounded or looked more precious...Southern Gothic country slash rock slash whatever perfected...goosebumps and tears, this is the way the south sounds and feels in it's soul...
Many folk speak of this being not as good as the original, but thats not the point, the point is that someone covered it at all and the reason they did is because they felt the emotion in the original, and responded by offering this damn good cover...music isnt a competition, its an evolution
I really felt the same about the invention of the wheel! You know what was great? When Ugh and Agh decided to make it square! This is almost as good as time Tom and Jane made Fire God so we eat square bread! @brian brown: brian brown makes a very good point, here.
Playing music has been the guiding force of my life, and a long time ago I came to the conclusion that I would sing songs written by other people if I felt I had something to add to it. I didn't want to stand on stage feeling like a hack b/c I was doing a second rate job singing someone else's version of a great song. If you don't have something to add to the conversation just let it go. I know the impulse to sing and play songs you Love. I can't and wouldn't want to sing Visions of Johanna or Tangled Up in Blue like Bob Dylan. Jerry Garcia does my favorite versions of both those songs and his versions, for me, define those songs. I will Never play either as well as Jerry, and out of respect for Jerry, myself, and those listening to me will save them the trouble of wanting to tell me how the whole time they were listening to me butcher a version they love of a song they love they were wishing they weren't.
brian brown music as evolution is a perfect way to encapsulate this type of cover. "The Weight" is a song written with intrinsic traditional style. It deserves to be carried on into perpetuity.
Love the way she looks at Dave at around 1:34. Seriously, I love to sing but I will never have what this woman has, do what this woman does. She's got the mountains in her voice. White mountain woman blues with soul to spare. Truly my soul's sister.
Moments like this just have to happen. You cannot plan it. I would love to have been there and heard this live. I thank these musicians for keeping true country music alive. The pop country acts aren't worthy of shining their shoes.
JJK Believe it or not, this is what country music used to sound like, before the folks in Nashville and Memphis decided what was and wasn't marketable. While of course The Band wasn't a country group, the traditional country sound was quite prevalent in their songwriting, and this performance is very much reminiscent of the early days of "mountain" music. Aside from the instruments being used, the traditional and modern country music styles bear very little resemblance to each other.
what a wonderful interpretation of a classic song. the pairing of OCMS and Gillian Welch/David Rawlings is just about perfection. saw OCMS in houston a couple of weeks ago - they are a MUST SEE LIVE ACT. if you get the chance GO. find a sitter, call in sick, drive 4 hours if you must. just get there - you won't be disappointed.
Thank you so much Gillian Welch and OCMS for this beautiful performance. Battling through Traumatic Brain Injury for the past 6 months, and this song (one of my all time favorites)--what a sweet and heartfelt version!
Gillian and the Boys did this song proud....this is the best cover of this song, that I have ever heard.... I am sure Robbie and the rest of the Band are smiling
The best video on TH-cam. It has the most heart and the most soul and you really see how much OCMS and Welch Rawlings enjoy playing the music together. There wouldn't even have to be an audience and it would be the same. Awesome.
I really, really like this. Her smile makes it all the more precious. The joy of performance is amazing and I have felt it. Spiritual joy and much more.
I'm just discovering Old Crow Medicine Show. They're like all my fav musicians wrapped up in one band...and young and energetic. Bless their hearts. It's a real sacrifice to do what they've done with such dedication and talent.
Credit to RR for authoring this remarkable tune and Levon and Rick for its delivery. Still after 50 years of this tune filling our ears, the only vocalists who can bring it to us like they did.
I got to see these guys together in Chico a few years ago and I still think it might be the best concert ever. Loved the whole thing...this song was soooo great that night.
This is the BEST cover I have ever heard of this song. Don't know if I prefer this or the original by The Band.... so much the same and so different. Class! Thanks for posting!
Beautiful music, lovely happy people, doing what they love, the warmth and honesty of this music just oozes like sweet sweet honey off of warm toast between the fingers of a laughing child...
Finally, a comment that I can't resist adding to. Ever since I was a kid around 1970, I turned onto the band, and over the years have gotten a deeper sense of what classic legends they were, when they were at their height. And they all had the sense to get out at the top of their game, before the road killed them. Robbie Robertson talked about that in the Last Waltz. So it's nice to see another group of musicians do one of their most well known songs, and do it justice. Gillian and David have become legends in their own time, for very justifiable reasons. I believe they are at the very top of this game, and do not receive the attention they deserve!
Just the real deal talent I've seen him solo multiple times just raw talent, you can even see it on Gillian's face after..David Rawlings actually produced his last album it's called folk singer vol 1
This was amazing.. In my idealist 20's I hated covers, then I realized it was the highest form of flattery-- Now I appreciate covers when they are done right-- this one is done even better than right-- Thanks for posting and sharing it. EXCELLENT version of a fine old song by a stage full of outstanding talent- I too, am a Band Fan, as well as OCMS and now Gillian Welch
Brilliant video, watching it makes me feel really good, because I know that the future of popular music is safe in these guy's hands.. such great, raw talent.
I always have a hard time believing this song was "written" - feels like it has always existed and Robbie and the boys unearthed it up north somewhere. Many (too many!) good and great musicians have tried and failed to do it justice, and there will never be a version quite like the original, but I think this is a beautiful performance. I Love Gillian and David - can't wait to see them next month in NYC!!
I feel that way about a few songs. Songs that are so much a part of the culture it’s hard to imagine they once didn’t exist. It must be weird to be the songwriter. Imagine you’re driving along listening to the radio and Eleanor Rigby comes on and you think “Oh yeah, I remember where I was when I wrote that” No particular reason I chose that song, there’s a few I could choose from. Not a helluva lot but a few.
It is always a testament to the talent of a band to be able to improve on an already great song. And, they have obviously done that here - well done by all.
Love it all, but how could this part not be anyone's fav. . . it's Ketch rippin' that fiddle and such a great voice to add harmonies in. . .absolutely incredible. Love it . . . can't say anymore that words can describe . . .
That is how I Define a "good" song. If it makes me feel something, any strong emotion, elation, depression, sadness, happiness, any other emotion. If there's one oversized tear rolling down each cheek at the end of a given song, I know that that is wonderful music. Neil Young and Crazy Horse do that with several, just in this century, that affect me that way, and I can't understand why. But there it is.
I sincerely love the version by The Band, but now I can't hear this song any other way than this. It simply beautiful, and the stories bear much more truth in a setting like this with acoustic instruments and a more earnest tone.

this song kept me alive tonight. literally. it changed my heart about the worth of this life. thank you.
Wow! Love Gillian, David & OCMS! Thank you, Levon, for probably the all-time greatest group sing along ever! Your cool vibes will resonate forever!
I would be willing to wager, that Robbie Robinson himself has this song in his top playlist. Absolutely beautiful work!!!
Saw these guys (Gillian, David & OCMS) at a gig over here in Ireland a few yrs back, got to chat to a lot of them afterwards. Hands down the best gig I've ever been to!!

It's one of the most soulful and beautiful interpretations of a song that I ever heard.
Many folk speak of this being not as good as the original, but thats not the point, the point is that someone covered it at all and the reason they did is because they felt the emotion in the original, and responded by offering this damn good cover...music isnt a competition, its an evolution

Good rendition...

The harmony and the way they perform this is absolutely beautiful. The Band would be proud of this especially the late Richard Manuel.
Moments like this just have to happen. You cannot plan it. I would love to have been there and heard this live. I thank these musicians for keeping true country music alive. The pop country acts aren't worthy of shining their shoes.
Country music? I don't think so
JJK Believe it or not, this is what country music used to sound like, before the folks in Nashville and Memphis decided what was and wasn't marketable. JJK educate yourself
+JJK Get your head out of your ass, this is real country music, not that bland pablum Nashville is selling. This is real Americana.
Some much better than she likes my truck or taking my jet ski to the marina
Gillian/David made me respect a genre I wouldn't have bothered to check out before hearing them. Just phenomenal artists.
Gillian Welch and David Rawlins are so amazing together...always have been, David's guitar playing is brilliant.👍👏🤗
One of the best live performances of any song on TH-cam. A truly great song by The Band.
There are those few times when a group of musicians get together and magic happens - this is one of them!
what a wonderful interpretation of a classic song. the pairing of OCMS and Gillian Welch/David Rawlings is just about perfection. saw OCMS in houston a couple of weeks ago - they are a MUST SEE LIVE ACT. if you get the chance GO. find a sitter, call in sick, drive 4 hours if you must. just get there - you won't be disappointed.

This is simply fantastic. Everyone shines. Gillian's smile is radiant. One of the best things I've seen and heard on youtube.
I concur
Gillian and the Boys did this song proud....this is the best cover of this song, that I have ever heard.... I am sure Robbie and the rest of the Band are smiling

The best video on TH-cam. It has the most heart and the most soul and you really see how much OCMS and Welch Rawlings enjoy playing the music together. There wouldn't even have to be an audience and it would be the same. Awesome.
I used to sing this in high school with my little folk rock band. I loved this song so much. Brings back the memories.
Fantastic harmonies. It is an absolute pleasure to listen to these folks perform together.
Just about the best version of this song I've ever heard. Ol' Levon and them would be proud.
a wonderful person introduced me to this version. i'll never again hear this song without thinking of her.
I really, really like this. Her smile makes it all the more precious. The joy of performance is amazing and I have felt it. Spiritual joy and much more.
said it before and ill say it again. one of the best musical performances i have had the pleasure of seeing. thank you
I'm just discovering Old Crow Medicine Show. They're like all my fav musicians wrapped up in one band...and young and energetic. Bless their hearts. It's a real sacrifice to do what they've done with such dedication and talent.
They really put heart and soul into the song. Thank you to the Lady, and the Gentlemen. XXX.

Loved the whole thing...this song was soooo great that night.
Gifted and soulful musicians one and all. The perfect tribute to the perfect song.
This is the BEST cover I have ever heard of this song. Don't know if I prefer this or the original by The Band.... so much the same and so different. Class! Thanks for posting!
Superb.
Almost as pleasing as how good this is is how much Gillian smiles throughout - clearly enjoying the whole experience!
Beautiful music, lovely happy people, doing what they love, the warmth and honesty of this music just oozes like sweet sweet honey off of warm toast between the fingers of a laughing child...
Love Gillian and Dave..!Rest in eternal peace Levon, Richard & Ricky..God Bless THE BAND !!!!!
Amen.

Absolutely Amazing! As a huge fan of both Gillian & David as well as OCMS it only makes sense that they'd make incredible music together.
I just love that young fella in the blue shirt singing his short bit!
+Rachel King I feel the same; each solo is so filled with their what effort?
+Rachel King "I'm a peaceful man..."
That would be Mr. Willie Watson you gotta check him out
Just the real deal talent I've seen him solo multiple times just raw talent, you can even see it on Gillian's face after..David Rawlings actually produced his last album it's called folk singer vol 1
+Rachel King i
this is simply the best version of this song ever. for them and for us.

Damn, I have loved this song for a long time. This version sent chills up my spine.
Chills.....great version. Saw her for the first time at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass in SF. It was magic. Pure magic.
I love the Old Crow Medicine Show and I love this cover. Great.
Whats is so beautiful is the fact that all the players are honoring Levon Helm in their own way.
I wish I could have been there in person. So much talent all on one stage!
When they all sing that last verse it gives me goosebumps!
Brilliant video, watching it makes me feel really good, because I know that the future of popular music is safe in these guy's hands.. such great, raw talent.
One of my all time favorite songs. Great job! I believe Levon would approve
This is such a wonderful version! Please please please, this needs to covered on someone's album.
Two of the absolute BEST genuine Artists!
Awesome, just turned 60 Brings tears to my eyes.listening to this the only kind of thing to keep on keeping on.
The talent on that stage is unbelievable
i love songs like this. hit you in the chest like a ton of bricks but leaves you so refreshed after. what a trip.

@@shtevenshtein Not a Dylan tune, but he definitely has a few in this category!
Damn right! Excellence in musical power.Thank you both.Love the guitar DR.
This musical performance truly is top shelf. It is also a beautifully filmed and edited piece. good job broadcast team.
Totally agree!!
An amazing blend of musical and vocal harmonies.
It is always a testament to the talent of a band to be able to improve on an already great song. And, they have obviously done that here - well done by all.
Simply outstanding! Great job. I can listen to it over and over again. It'll definitely be played when I leave this world. God bless The Band's music.
It is hard not to like every version
of this song, my all time favorite song and I love them all! The original is the best to me!
can't believe I missed these guys in Hollywood....great tune!
Perfect song! I hope I'm never so depressed that watching this won't cheer me up.

Love it all, but how could this part not be anyone's fav. . . it's Ketch rippin' that fiddle and such a great voice to add harmonies in. . .absolutely incredible. Love it . . . can't say anymore that words can describe . . .
I hope someday my kids watch this and wonder why it doesn't have a billion views.
+Jeremy AAsum I hope someday this has a billion views!
waves of chills up and down the spine for this one... these are some of the most beautiful people I have ever seen
Wonderful version! Gotta add, if I were to make a list of the top 10 songs of the last 60 years this song would make that list.
great singer & musicians & a absolute timeless tune!!! this song just puts a smile on my face, along with every person on that stage😀 #lovemusic
Bloody hell, this is a great version of a great song.
Absolutely golden!! Musicians performing for the joy of entertaining. Beautiful.
No need to compare this with the original - they're both superb in their own way.
This is grand, really grand. And so well produced. I got to say, I've watched it more than a few times. Cheers to you!
should this make me cry? because it does
That wasn't Carmen,it was karma and the devil
TheCheesecakedeath ,well up meself you not alone lol
Yes, you get it.
Yep. Its ok.

Incredible sounds, harmonies born out of a love of music. I got to hear them live.
Everyone in OCMS looks so young here! Gillian is amazing (not a surprise), and they all sound great together. So sad Willie left the band.
What a wonderful version! What a classic!
Thank you for that!
Just goes to show you how much a great song this really is. This bluegrass type band just nails this song. Great cover!!!!
Wow! Been living in the northern Midwest so long almost forgot how great true Southern music can be. Thank you, Lord and Levon Helm.
I sincerely love the version by The Band, but now I can't hear this song any other way than this. It simply beautiful, and the stories bear much more truth in a setting like this with acoustic instruments and a more earnest tone.
Cole Peterson you can find the band on TH-cam
Anything with the old crow medicine show is worth watching 🎸🎸🐻
Beautiful song, great cover.
this girl will go down in music history, a true gift.
Makes a man wonder how Carmen and The Devil got to be such close frends in the first place.
One of the best songs ever written . One of the best covers. Could be the best version ever. Could be. I'm lovin it.
This is my preference.
th-cam.com/video/0h5CaV9gtDY/w-d-xo.html
But I have to admit some prejudice.
This is so beautiful -2019
OCMS is the epitome of American music. Awesome.
A great rendition of a classic song. Congratulations!
its just amazing having that many brilliant people on a stage at one time
