Coleman BT200X | Don't Buy A Torque Converter For Your BT200X Before Watching This! | Wet Coast Fab

  • The stock centrifugal clutch on the Coleman BT200X mini bike is decent enough, but it has limitations when faced with more demanding conditions. For example, I experienced difficulty getting the mini bike going up a steep hill, as the clutch dragged the engine down, preventing it from providing enough power to overcome the hill.
    In a previous video ( • Coleman BT200X Mini Bi... , I tried to run the Coleman minibike through about 18" of snow. While traction was tricky, the centrifugal clutch caused a lot of drag, preventing the engine from getting up to speed.
    In this video, I'm installing a Vevor torque converter (a continuously variable transmission) that should allow the engine to rev up faster and help the bike reach a higher speed. This transmission is a copy of the Comet TAV2 transmission, commonly found in bigger street scooters.
    I encounter some challenges during this installation, and I'm unsure if the HiSun 196cc engine with its 16mm shaft will work with the Vevor torque converter. However, I plan on replacing the HiSun with a 212cc engine soon, which has a 3/4" shaft, making it compatible with the torque converter.
    Join me as I figure out this installation process!

    Everyone thinks the original engine sux and the pred is better, but, the hisun stock motor is just as good. T/c installation is a pain. Misalignments must be dealt with. Removal of internal governor and use of a better spark plug goes a long way. Good work, Wet Coast Lab! I get 60mph, but rarely use it.

    If you want to go faster, you need to change your rear sprocket to a smaller one. Your original drivetrain gear reduction that you took off was a lot smaller than your torque converter. The sprockets were smaller. Now you went from basically 3 inches to like 10 inch gear reduction with a torque converter when you take off, so you can put a smaller sprocket at the rear wheel and still have enough torque to climb your hills, but increase your top speed.

    You can get 30+ mph on the stock 196cc. Take the throttle stop screw out and throw it in the garbage. Remove the gas tank. Then move the governor spring that connects beneath throttle assembly to the furthest hole on the governor arm. You should get up to 34mph no prob.

    I'm so glad you made a video on this! I ran into the same issues with my bike and it's good to know that it's not just me! I put a basically stock 212 on my Coleman with a torque converter and honestly was disappointed. I put a 60 tooth rear sprocket on it, played around with jetting and exhaust setups (which did seem to help) and still it just didn't pull like it should've. It was faster than stock for sure, especially after bypassing the governor, but without extensive flow mods these motors just don't rev out enough to max those pulleys out.

    • @wetcoastfab
      @wetcoastfab  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for that feedback, RJ! After doing a bunch of research I think the only way that using a torque converter effectively is to either remove the governor (and accept the risks associated with that) so the engine gets over 5,000 rpm or replace the weights/spring in the torque converter's clutch so they open up sooner. I'll be messing with the governor removal in a future video to see how that works out. I've got one more thing to try first though.

    • @RJedmiston
      @RJedmiston ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@wetcoastfab in those Amazon torque converters the driver pulleys engagement is controlled by springs, so in theory you could stretch them out and it would fully engage earlier. Not sure about the driven pulley though. I’d be interested to see how that would work though

    • @wetcoastfab
      @wetcoastfab  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, on more 'conventional' scooters, they typically have a set of ceramic rollers in the clutch or driven pulley and you can replace them with heavier or lighter rollers to change the 'shift' point of the CV transmission - maybe that's a mod I could try: rollers!

      @Deucealive75 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Removing the governor on a stock 196/212 on a Coleman 200 with a torque converter and stock gearing is a complete waste of time. You'll never see 5K RPM.
      The best basic setup for these bikes is a stage 1 kit (look that up), a torque converter, and a 60 tooth sprocket. Back out the throttle screw and you are good to go with nice low end and decent top speed. Keep the governor and stock linkage.
      Pulling the governor is for guys building potent performance engines that use Mikuni style carbs and run higher than 6K RPM. Pulling the governor is also for guys who do not yet know what they are doing and just want more RPM and top speed for their bikes that use a standard clutch.
      I have had my CT200U's for six years. If you rode either one of them you would agree that there's no need to pull the governor.

    After removing the governor and replacing the flywheel with one that won't grenade at higher rpms, you need to switch the clutch pulley to a Juggernaut or another like it if you want to go faster. The ones that come with the CVTs limit the engine's ability to reach it's potential. The rpms will have a higher limit with a juggernaut.

    • @wetcoastfab
      @wetcoastfab  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the great info, John!

    • @Deucealive75
      @Deucealive75 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not always. My Coleman runs higher than 50 MPH with the stock TAV driver. Juggernauts are for guys with 7500 RPM plus engines. They are not what you want to run with a stock engine.
      If he's running that slow there's something wrong. And pulling the governor will not increase speed on any stock Coleman 200 with a torque converter. The engine never makes it to stock governed RPM with the stock Coleman gearing once the belt shifts to high. It's still going to top out governor or no governor.

I've got a 20 thou over stock billet crank and a high compression piston I'll be testing out as well as a 10k rpm flywheel to go on. Those will be upcoming videos soon!

    You'd be surprised just how powerful you can make a 196cc if you do enough mods to it. I never made that transition to a 212. I just upgraded every single part in the 196cc until i was able to hit 50 + and get to that top speed really quick. But yeah I don't even wanna know by now just how much money I've spend getting to this point. Alot more than I paid for the bike I'm sure lol. It's a possibility that the overall gearing ratio is too high and the torque converter will never make it run as fast as its highest speed would be with the little power you have.

    • @wetcoastfab
      @wetcoastfab  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Solo! When the governor was removed, was the hole the governor shaft goes through properly plugged? These engines use splash lubrication for oiling and not a pump so oil is literally sprayed everywhere in the crank case and will find the tiniest hole to leak out of.

    • @BassFishingWithSolo

    • @wetcoastfab
      @wetcoastfab  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah! I don't think anything will be bad as long as you stay on top of your oil level and not let it get too low (other than the oily mess, that is). These engines (the HiSun and Predators) have low-oil shut off so you may find if the oil gets low, and you end up on a hill, the engine will cut out because the oil is moving around in the crank case.

    • @wetcoastfab
      @wetcoastfab  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There's a few things you could do but it depends on your skill level:
      - remove the gas tank and anything else that might be in the way is going to be the first step
      - a basic fix would be a simple silicone plug - clean the area and the hole and put some RTV silicone in it and a bit around the outside of the crank case. This might not work depending if you've got a lot of blow-by pressure in the engine (due to wear) and the plug might just blow out
      - a slightly better approach is the same but drill and tap two small holes and make a small steel plate that will also cover the silicone plug. That will prevent it from blowing out. If you don't want to drill and tap holes in the crankcase, there's probably already a threaded boss you could make a longer steel patch that could anchor to and cover the hole. Might take a bit of CAD (cardboard aided design) patterning to get it right
      - you could drill and tap the governor shaft hole itself, put sealant on a bolt and just thread it in the hole. That's a pretty permanent change (you wouldn't be able to put your governor back in again) and you run the risk of aluminum shavings getting inside the crankcase, so it would be best to take the side panel off the engine when doing this so you can clean out the crankcase after
      You've given me a great idea for a new video on maybe testing out these above methods too; give me a week or two and I'll see if I can come up with something.
