Mr. Stephen, I dont know if you're aware, but this video is recommended a number of times on the G6 Forum...for its thorough details! Also, Ive read every single comment and all of your replies. You are really very kind, offering your guidance through this awful situation! Im sure i speak for everyone...Thank you very much! GOD BLESS YOU, SIR!!
Thank you for that tour of the convertible top of the G6! I really appreciate your detailed coverage. That is quite the mechanical/ hydraulic contraption! Like you, I assumed it was electro- mechanical.
Thanks fot your video, i bought this vehicle in 2013 with no issues but i want to preserve it so i am learning everything i can about it before it does happen
Yes It almost overwhelmed me. But the wife really loves the car. Put some hydraulic fluid in the tank on the right side of the trunk It might work enough to get it back up for you. (The system will still leak). Mine was so badly leaking it wouldn't keep any pressure. Good luck my friend
Thank you. Much appreciated. There is a lot of hardware back there to tend with... at first glance.. it's a little intimidating! Lol. Mine keeps telling me that the back cover in the trunk isn't closed.. like it has to be. Idk.. Maybe it's one of those 2 back sensors along the back wall? At least now I have something to work off of! I also have a broken bat wing cable to tend with. Ive come across 5 wrecked 07 G6 GTs in a pull a part junk yard. I got lucky with that! Thanx again!
Yes, it can be intimidating. I would look for broken wires an switches. Are switches that have come loose and or are now out of adjustment. If you find one that's damaged you can get the switch on eBay. Our repair the broken wire. On my wife's car oh, I had to make sure that tire cover is on. There is even a switch to make sure the cover is over the tire
was looking into getting one but the seal around the windshield is dry rotted where the hard top latches into. was wondering if yours is like that too or if this one has just been dry rotted from the weather.
Mine getting hard also, I just cleaned it and lubed it Petroleum jelly / Vaseline. And it helped. I've not tried to replace it or to see how.. Maybe a local junk yard has one you can play with before messing yours up first. Good luck
More about question. Will the trunk not open at all? Press the button on the door not release the trunk? Or are your roof hydraulic system will not open the trunk.? If not, open trunk on door button. Then like the video... check oil and refill. It should help but not fix the problem... Will need to fix the leak or wire break
My trunk wouldn’t open just a few days ago. Remove negative battery terminal for a moment, after reconnecting (don’t worry about tightening it ) press trunk button on key fob or in door. It should open then. (Mine was a broken wire in trunk to a sensor for top). I repaired with butt-connectors and wire. Trunk button works now.
Is there any written manual (for example Haynes) that covers servicing the convertible top mechanism? I haven’t been able to find anything. Gonna have to watch the video later, I’m sure it’s great but I always like to have both video and manual if possible.
No I have not found any. it's just by the gifts that Lord has given me to understand the hydraulics and the wiring. I am willing to talk to you and guide you through this as much as you would like me to do. Email me your contact info if you want to talk. Stephen.g.cromer@gmail.com
How Many Miles does your red one have in this video ? I'm a body man with over 50 years experience .. and I've always heard these Karmann tops were very reliable. They are the same company that build the top for the Mercedes SLK and CLK series. And many parts on this are interchangeable with the Mercedes tops.. but the problem is none of the interchangeability is documented
Hey have you ever had a issue with the trunk getting stuck open while putting the roof down? I messed up and pulled the emergency trunk open while opening the roof and now it’s stuck open. The motor for the roof won’t move and all I get is (too not secure)
Stephen, 2 years have gone by - Any update on your repairs to your G6 convertible? I have a 2007 one and trying to diagnose "top not secure" problem. I don't see any leaking fluid but thought I would refill fluid with CHF11S as a start.
Yes, my wife still has her G6, I've just replaced the right cylinder. The main seal was leaking but cleaned them and lubed the seals with Vaseline. They came back to life . Your message has to be coming from a sensor not being happy or miss adjusted or broke..
Stephen, - Thanks for your tip. As I look back the past couple of months, the truck has become unlocked while driving. This may point as you said to a bad sensor. I think Top Hydraulic sells switches for our Pontiac G6 as part of their options for our Pontiac. I will keep you posted. thanks again.
I just saw this video while searching for a solution to the exact same problem after being told by my local GM see dealership as well as my regular mechanic that they could not fix it. I have some questions and I am wondering how I would contact you.
You have to help diagnose. Normally it's a leaking main cylinder. You have 2(1 on each side) You have to have someone watch the video who is mechanical minded.
Hello, so I bought 07 g6, press button, windows roll down, then the top moves an inch, nothing more. Among other things, could this be the hydraulic line (reservoir looks full)? Tks
it's always a possibility, check the pump to see if it's running or trying to run (have someone to listen while you press the button). but I would also look at all sensors. that's those wire connections near every cylinder. I show you some of that in the video.
Hello since last post, ive found that i need to replace "lid balance" cable on the drivers side. Hard to find, maybe you have source or advise on replacing part. Tks
Remember your systems got to be totally retracted. So try to retract it if you can your dash will tell you if it's incomplete or not. Remember there's two ways to open your trunk. One is the button on your driver door. Other is on your remote. Also check all your fuses because your trunk is electronically controlled. That's the only options I have for you I wish you luck
@@sgcromer526 thanks for your quick reply, Stephen. The remote or door button doesn’t work. I tried to look for the fuse in the dash as well but apparently it looks like they put the trunk fuse in the trunk. Not really the smartest idea. I think I only have one option to be able to open it through emergency trunk opener and only possible way I see is to remove the rear seat. I have no idea how to remove it.
@@prernapandey6022 yes had to remove back seat to fix my hard top that was stuck in the trunk... the bottom of back seat comes up by pulling up from back of the bottom seat. Then that exposes two big bolts and nuts. Which locks in the back of the seat period after that and the seatbelts are removed. Lift up are push up the seat and it will slide up it's very hard
It has a fuse in the normal fuse block. I'm not sure which one it is. I've never seen the fuse been dead. Not saying it's not. But have someone press the roof button and you go back to the back right where the hydraulic pump is and Listen for the pump trying to run. That will tell you...
The video shows you step by step to do it. 1 to fill the hydraulic tank on the pump. Make sure you get the correct hydraulic fluid. Then rock the open and close button to secure the top closed in trunk. With the hydraulic tank being full. Try to put the top up, if the lines and cylinders were dry, it will have to pump for a while before it will move to close. Then look for which cylinder is leaking and replace it. The parts can be purchased on eBay. Use " Pontiac G6 convertible hydraulic " to find them.
Need to check your Fluid levels and the pump reserve. It will be low. Add some then look at one of the main cylinder Probably is leaking . The fluid smells very uniquely . Watch for the extra mess Are fluid around the cylinders . My video shows the one I had to replace
You have to look for oil around the areas. Open trunk and look for a hydraulic silver cylinder near each back 2 side windows. You must put more hydraulic fluid in pump and try to open your trunk. Then look for oil around the cylinders. If your system is dry, (have not had hydraulic oil in it for a while) you will have to try opening the top a few times before the oil gets to the cylinders.
Mine is half way full & i haven't noticed a leak. We've had the car for about 9 years & have only had the top down a dozen times though. Not sure if that helps you out any. Just thought id share.
I'm no transmission specialist. I would look at the linkage between shifter and transmission. You might need a good transmission mechanic to get to the small areas. I'm sorry I couldn't help you more
Hey Stephen! Thanks for the video...I have a very similar issue with my 2007 but my top is down but not secured. How did you get the top up so you could work on the hydraulics?
Thank you for watching. My top was all the way down. But after realizing which cylinder was leaking. Once it was replaced. And putting more hydraulic fluid. It started working when the fluid got to the new cylinder let's start working
