I love these Rachel! Yes, please make all the covers online so we can see. I started in this book community when I started learning how to save some of my husband’s books that were damaged in a move. Then I started watching this community on TH-cam in 2014 and loved it so now I make journals from scratch as well as repurposing old books. My husband thinks it’s great I can give the books a new life. Thanks for continuing to share your creativity with us! Laura
HAHAHA! That is how I fell into the junk journnal rabbit hole myslef--I was looking to rebind some vintage books that were my children's favorite, some were rare and all were out of print. I started in 2019.

Hi Rachel, I have always adored and respected books since I started reading age 4 and can’t even bring myself to turn the corner on one. I’m 70 and still have books from my childhood that are in very good condition. I absolutely love making journals and feel that using old books to make something else is a mark of respect, it’s no different to using vintage clothes to make quilts etc. I still cringe and hesitate before I can take apart an old book, but I know in it’s new life it will be loved and have a use, which I’d rather than see it rotting in the ground or being burned, in my opinion, that would be such a shame and a waste. It’s up -cycling and re -using.

You are so right, Rachel, to give the old books new life. No one wants books, that are too damaged (and most young people won’t buy old books at all😜). Many books now a days are simply thrown away, when the owners die. So better to love the books in a new form, than letting them go to waste. And what an exiting new project you have started with Jarf’s beautiful new kits. I would love to see you work on the others. I love all your creations (and my own old book pages😜. Just bought 2 ruined books today in a second hand book shop in Prague - no covers, and actually falling apart - but lovely paper, size and print)🤗🌸💗🥰

Sorry that woman got under your skin about tearing up old books. I love how you handled it. I'm with you in that these old books are good to no one but us crafters. But they live on and that is the point.

My sentiments exactly..."move on"...i just love all you do to preserve these old books and documents 🎉 of course you have your own library of ones you might never cut up. But i don't think it's worm eaten 😮😂 those you show us all what we can do to some old books we can find in our own countries. Jarff is so talented!! Here kits are certainly massive and give you LOTS of bang for your buck. These are so vibrant and colorful, absolutely goregous. I am lookig forwarfd to watching these journals come together I love all the labels, too. You got me totally addicted to labels, lol!!
PS I hope your time does allow you to take us along when you do the ocvers, or at very least show what you've done. Your documents journals are unique just to you and they are fascinating to see come together!

Some people simply love books but like anything else, cannot save them all. I think in a way by repurposing them, even as glue pages, you are actually doing that! New life for something old, wormy, shabby, discolored, whatever ... its fasinating how you transform it into something beautiful!! These journals are going to be so gorgeous, well really ... what isn't that you set your crafty mind to?😊 thankyou for missing me.❤

I think your a great teacher/ love the way you go thru things and are committed to your Art! Yes covers! I’m fairly new just a year here in the states and worked at the Library😂😂😂. I’m learning what you say about your beautiful books and things and your so right books get throw away because their not loved or needed or no more space or people die and so fourth. Your and your husband make a great team and love your digitals.❤

Dont ever let anyone tell you or chastise you for preserving and using old books that were destined to the dump if you dont rescue them.
The only book that I have a hard time watching anyone tear up is the Bible of any language age or culture. Thats just me, everything else to me is totally fair game and should be repurposed and used.
I love these kits. I hope that I can purchase them this week. These will be perfect for my next project.

I definitely agree your saving what can be saved and given a whole new life that may extend another 100/200 years.
Your journals are works of art made from books that very well could have there life over however now they are made beautiful and I know from my own experience I love to sit and look at them over and over again to see all the amazing ways they have been given a new life and the amazing joy they bring people in a whole new way.

I have many 200+ year old books, and the only reason I hate tearing them up is that it means I'll use them up sooner.

So excited to watch this project! I've been eyeing that kit lol. I do understand the lady's feelings. When I first started watching I was like oh wow such treasures but then I became jealous of all the wonderful originals you had. Lol oh my gosh would Love to feel all the different papers❤ the more I watched you though the more I Totally understood your thinking so I finally got that in my head and actually used something out of an old book that I got for nothing. It was very intimidating lol and now if I find an old book I appreciate it for a bit then well it starts it's new life in pieces😂

I so agree! What we do in junk journals is breathing life into things that were forgotten or have outlived their usefulness in what they were for. It delights me to see them find such beautiful new life! ❤❤❤

I really enjoyed this video. The color of the old file folders is so yummy, wish I could get something like that here. I have been working with that kit for several weeks now and I love it so much I don’t want to stop. I haven’t made a journal out of it yet but you are really inspiring me to go back and make one too. I still have so many pages left.. lol! You were right, we could work with it for a year! 😊 Can’t wait to see how your document journals will come out. 😊💕😊

Wow! Jarf really outdid herself. I’ve got a few projects planned for myself but thinking that I need these kits and to follow along with you on this one. I’ve just started experimenting with making faith journals and I think I’ll incorporate these kits into one of those maybe. I have to play with that idea in my head a bit.

My heart bleeds to cut up 200 year old books too but let's be honest, who on earth is going to read them any more. Much better that they have a second chance to be used than fodder for a bonfire or skip. Though I confess to hoarding them, just haven't found the right journal for them yet lol. I understand that but many of these books are 1 volume of many so are incomplete! Some have never been read. The important books are in the hands of collectors and museums. I mostly tear up the damaged ones or incomplete uninteresting topics.

In my opinion what you are doing with old books is fabulous! 😊 you sell some whole, and provide us with beautiful pages to enjoy with our crafting that gets passed on and not thrown in dumpsters or land fills.

Most junk journal creators tear up old books to use in their journals. I do, and like you said, Rachel, you're putting them in journals instead of them being put in a landfill somewhere. They are being kept alive in our journals. Thank you for sharing, Rachel. 🙂♥️

I was brought up very poor. We went to the library every week. We were taught to take good care of books. We were told that children in third world countries didn't have books. So we better be grateful we had books. It was the way we were taught back in the 1960's growing up in America. So maybe just maybe she was just sharing her feelings about books. I am silly too, I still have all my books and barbie dolls from my childhood. But take what you like and leave the rest.

Hi Rachel, do you print on 120gsm paper? When I print on both sides on regular 80gsm I can see some of the other side show through. Thanks
My paper is 80gsm but is super good quality. HP home and office regular copy paper
Rachel, can you please share what kind of printer your new printer is? Mine died this weekend. 😩
I bought 2 the better one is not eligible for instaink here but it's great.- Hp officejet pro 7720 . It also prints A3 which I won't be doing too often lol. The second one is Hp officejet pro 8025e which is on Instaink. The print outs are good but it's much slower. I think if you are able to spend around €150-200 will get a decent one. The latter of the 2 only cost me €120
