    The Seiko SRPH75K1 - or the Antarctica Monster Save The Ocean - is overrated. It really is.
    Yes, I know you're paying for the brand and the 'Save The Ocean' credentials and all the rest of it, but just how much is too much for ancillary, abstract concepts like those? Plus, the actual build quality of this watch left A LOT to be desired. It rattled like hell, has an abysmal clasp and the bracelet feels cheap. But that's all just my opinion, of course...

    A bit of a harsh review...even though I tend to agree (generally) with your points. Full discloser: I have three Seiko Monsters (including the model featured in this review) and I have two Heimdallr "monsters" as well (an orange dial and a really cool green dial). While it's true, spec-wise, these homage watches (fake-o's) are superior to the real deals (again, by specs) and the prices are WAY cheapter, I must confess that the sum of the parts doesn't necessarily trump the whole, if that makes sense. In other words, I'd rather have the real thing, short comings or not. The finishing on the real Seikos I've found to be superior and then there's the grating, nagging little voice that bugs my horological OCD: you're wearing a fake!

      That's a really good point, mate - no doubt, there's a magic to certain brands and pieces, and that goes for this too. I think sometimes when you're trying to review stuff, it can be difficult not to let it boil down to hard facts, but then something will happen when those facts come into play. In this case, the Hardlex got scratched and I wasn't even sure how, and I think that's something that would really annoy me (and it did!). Seiko perhaps are riding the wave of goodwill because their watches have that certain magic that their history and designs hve afforded them, but that'll only go so far. If they could have better QC (alignment issues, etc) and ramp up specs the way they've ramped up prices, it'd be better for us all :)

    I totally agree that hardlex at this price range is an outrageous decision. Seiko sure makes some weird decisions these days. The review is spot on, I've often been tempted by a Samura but the ongoing qc issues and the price deter me. I have Citizens that have been half the price better qc and blow the Seikos literally out of the water. I'd like to buy a Seiko but I will not pay through the nose for sub standard procedure.

    I have not purchased a Seiko for years....Their lack of quality control is abysmal, and the prices, well....They have ideas WAY above their Horological station !!.......It,s the only watch brand where if you did decide to purchase, you have to contact the dealer first to make sure there are no issues with misalignment with the Bezel, Chapter Ring etc......Various Micro Brands supply pieces that knock Seiko out of the park for both QC and quality components.

They’re great watches but don’t offer the specs others do for the same price - a take as old as time. Nice finishing, great historical brand, but you’ve just got to pay a bit of a premium to match other brands that offer the same/better specs for less.

      The Monster is not my type but I do like their Samurai,Turtle/Tortoise and Alpinist line. And they do make beautiful dials. I guess the motto of Seiko is there is a watch for everybody (by churning up all different designs at different price points). I used to be a Seiko snob and my collections were all Swiss brands from entry level to high end. Now I realized I am missing out a lot by ignoring Seiko. There will never be a perfect watch even at the Swiss brand higher price point. It's a matter of what you're willing to compromise. I have noticed that people are more critical of Seiko's fault but are forgiving of more expensive Swiss brands fault. Just look at the rehaut of my Rolex and see if it's off by a mm. In the logic of the people complaining with Seiko having misaligned bezel, at the price point of Rolex the rehaut should be 100% aligned. But in reality, only WIS people can notice that when inspected closely. But practically nobody will do that when it's on another person's wrist.

    • @96kyh
      @96kyh ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@cedricduyongco I agree with your points. For that matter, WIS people are complaining about imperfections on AliExpress watches (homages) that cost from USD 60 - 250; which are otherwise incredible value for the money. Of course these are usually homages, but with outstanding specifications and finishing, considering the low prices..

    I really don't understand the negativity and the hate for Seiko...I just bought this watch from an AD for 20% discount from retail price, IMO it's great: case finish is top notch at this price point, accuracy is about 6 seconds per day. On my own alignment is good, I thought the cyclop iwas off but after staring very carefully I noticed it was an optical illusion. Bezel action is also very good and just after checking the alignment for a while I noticed the paint used for the engraved numbers of the bezel is indeed dark blue matching the dial. Yes there is some play in the endlinks, but underneath them my case was polished well. My main complaint is the clasp that IMO is too wide for the watch, I understand previous generations had a slimmer one but complainers complained it looked weird. I also noticed that the notches of the case aligned with the ones on the bezel but the latter should have been a tad wider in order to match their counterpats but here I'm nitipicking. Overall I would recommend this diver to people that are more interested in substance (ISO 6425 tested) than form (0.5mm play in the endlinks). Oh, hardlex is IMO better than the cheap and hazy sapphire you find on the knockoff brands at the same price point, even if it made more sense with the original design without lens because the bezel protected the recessed crystal...I am thinking about removing it to be honest. P.S. It's sad to see this channel recommends to go with AliE because they have a blue tinted sapphire, in the 70s an advertisement stated "just fake people buy fake watches".

    • @LumePip
      @LumePip  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I totally respect your position and am glad you've had a great experience with your Seikos. But I have to say, the sapphire crystals on watches I've experienced and reviewed at £480 (the current RRP of this watch) are not hazy or cheap looking. Likewise, most people paying £480 for a diver likely aren't using it for diving, and if they were, the poor diver's extension would be a disappointment for them. I think a lot of people - and admittedly this is based purely off anecdotal feedback and my own inclinations - would go for a combination of specs AND design/brand heritage at this sort of price point. There are better offerings from Seiko at this price, or just above this price. And let me add I absolutely don't condone fake watches. You imply I do - that's wrong. The Heimdallr homage that many argue is better than the real Monster (but I can't say as I haven't handled it) is not a fake.

  • @tomaskew1936
    @tomaskew1936 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Wow I do like the styling of the Monster, but I have to agree with you that in this price range you have a sapphire crystal. Dust inside the case of a 500-dollar watch is unacceptable. And I don't like the idea of all the crap collecting around the bezel. I think they made a decision at the top to pocket the money they save by giving their customer less quality hence no sapphire in many of their mid-price so-called better-quality watches. That said most of my Seiko's are still looking great even with Hardlex Crystal, Mineral instead of sapphire. There are always pro's and con's, I like Seiko and I do wish they would start using Sapphire in more of their mid-range choices. Orient Triton has sapphire Crystal and they do it at a price point below 300 dollars and great accuracy, the but on the Triton though is I am sure it is no ISO certified for diving and that does cost! And hey I am no professional, but I do like my watches and I have them ranging from an Omega Planet Ocean to an Invicta Pro diver, everyone needs a beater watch. LOL!

    I would be the most hardcore Seiko fanboy but I cannot lie, I cannot deceive myself. They are basically rip-off artists at this point and the sad thing is that they do not need to be. They have the history, the brand recognition. People would pay! I would happily shell out 500-700 for one of their divers which are, in reality, mass produced but the last time I did (a samurai save the ocean) it was so misaligned that I could not unsee it and it ruined the watch for me (it sits in the drawer until I buy the tools to correct it myself). If they sold watches with better crystals and with the alignment even a sub-100 Casio can achieve they'd get my money. It's sad. Like a friend ruining themselves with heroin.

    Seiko makes their watches the same way as the Chinese make watches. The difference is, a Chinese worker working for a Japanese company is less eager to make a precise product, because he hates the Japanese owners. Chinese workers work harder for Chinese firms, more accurate and are more proud of the end product. That´s my take on it. Stop buying crappy Seiko´s and demand better QC from Seiko. If you keep on buying badly aligned dials, Hardlex instead of Sapphire, pressed clasps instead of milled, than Seiko won´t stop producing these substandard watches. Go San Martin or Cronos all day, or even Pagani Design or Heimdahler. These Chinese brands are superior to Seiko and half the price or even 25% of the price of a Seiko.

I got Monster, Samurai, Presage, and 5. Every one is different and I like it, someone else doesn't need like it. if you don't like this type of crystal, is easy to replace with Sapphire - flat or not. Can't see the sense of this video.

    Seems good for 200$ . I bought mine without box together with sumo hulk sumo. Paid 400$ equivalent for both but they did not come with a box. I know it is real seiko as I have the real sumo hulk to compare. Besides the cyclops and without box, I like em. Wearing it today just got them few hours ago😂 with stickers and all from a very unhappy wife. Great size. Great color and my first special edition. Happy feet monster penguin doesnt sound correct but they look really cool as antarctica. Same size with my kamasu but with same dial with my king samurai and bezel action is seiko as it is quite not perfectly aligned but better clicks than my sumo hulk. Lumes is same as seiko samurai. Its my most loved piece so far. I will be checking if an SKX 007 will give same feeling of satisfaction after I will get it few days from now. But this one is cooler than what I currently have. I just ordered a SD1970 Captain Willard on the 11-11 sale and was thinking this black friday to get the heimdallr with the same dial and saw someone selling this. What a bargain . Better than buying something homagjng it. Perfect size for my wrist so far.

    Prices will continue to rise and have poor QC as long as they have little competition. I buy maybe one Seiko in a year now. I find Seiko homages from the far east to be be better value with better finish and materials plus Seiko movements at 1/4 the price or less. I like an honest review like this.

You’re right for the best part of £500 the specs and build quality just aren’t good enough. I recently purchased as C Ward Trident pro 300 for £750 (with a coupon) and for what you get for the extra £250 is staggering. The quality equals that of my BB58 navy. Sorry…rant over!!

    I own the JDM model SBDY115 and the previous Save the Ocean Antarctica Monster SBDY105 as well. This is the first negative review I’ve seen on this watch . I don’t have any of the issues you have with yours on either of mine and I’d say these are actually excellent Seiko divers . I’ve even thought of adding the Padi edition of the fourth generation monster as well. The only point I agree with you on is that I do wish it had a sapphire crystal. Other than that my two Save the Ocean Antarctica Monster watches are amazing 🤩

    I’m a seiko collector and I’ve got quite a few divers, including a jade green monster which is pretty similar to this one. It’s probably the watch in my collection that I’ve got the most mixed feelings on, sometimes I love wearing it but it gets less time than any other seiko diver. I have to say I agree this bracelet is a bit of a waste of space, it just doesn’t match the case and dial. The diver extensions generally are just a load of nonsense for 99% of users, they just look like a cheap afterthought to tick a box. I’ve got mine on a strapcode superengineer, much more in line with the industrial case design I think. On a positive note it seems to have nearly doubled in value since I bought it….

    • @LumePip
      @LumePip  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had a Strapcode Hexad bracelet on a Samurai I used to have and it really did lift the watch into a new tier entirely, so that is always an option. But it seems like a lot of these $500 Seikos now come with the understanding you might have to do upgrades on it for it to match other brands' watches in the same price category! 🙃

    I have the watch and I completely disagree with you. Not only is a great watch is also unique in design, original and most importantly part of the money goes into saving the ocean. So if for this price I should get a sapphire and I get hardlex, for me is fine with the thought that the rest of the money goes into a good cause. I want to see you so keen on what you get for your buck from a 15.000$ Rolex Sub vs this 500$. Or if you want absolute best back for the buck go get a Zelos. This watch is not for you because you clearly are missing the point of it. For me is the absolute best watch.

    The Seiko monster is the kind of beast that you love or hate.
    Excuse me, but I must be frank: from your review you seem to belong to the second category.
    Most of your points are pointless. For example mineral crystal has some advantage over sapphire, it's not always true that sapphire is the better option. The bracelet it's not the best but at this price point you can find something worse...and in any case you can just swap it with whatever you want.
    So the real question is : why did you buy it?

    • @LumePip
      @LumePip  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Whether you love or hate it, you're right - if it's for you, great, but I think for the price there are better options, even from Seiko. I recently reviewed the SPB185J1 and thought it was superb. That can be had on the secondary market for a similar price to the Monster at retail. I appreciate the argument that mineral crystal is better in certain contexts - it's less likely to shatter than sapphire, for example, and that might be a factor depending on what you're using it for - but I think most people enjoy the benefits of a sapphire crystal because nobody wants a scratched watch. The beauty of Seiko, of course, is it can be modded quite easily! To answer the question of why I bought it, it's because I loved the dial. I'm also interested in watches generally and enjoy reviewing them, even if they're not to my tastes, and the Monster is a staple of the watch community - naturally, I stumped up some money and bought it so I could share my thoughts 👍

      I love the dial too...I have recently bought a first generation monster (a bit wilder look than this) and it is definitely one of a kind. I like especially the fact that it does not look like anything else, in a market (the diver 's watch market) where a lot of watches look more or less the same (i.e.: like the rolex submariner...)

    It's a tool watch that looks best with some battle scars...like a Lexus GX460...ya it's an upscale SUV, but it's meant to be seriously off-roaded. It's a Seiko, it's meant to be abused and keep on ticking for years and years, it's not an investment and I never expect to see my money back. Besides, I can't see the lint on the dial...I'm old.

    I don't like the Monsters case design. Seiko makes too many models. Some are good some are bad. I guess by releasing many models they cater to different tastes of different people. I just started buying Seiko's as my collection used to be all Swiss Made watches. But Seiko has some compelling watch designs (Alpinist, King Samurai Manta Ray STO, Land Tortoise Dark Green Dial, to name a few). But for every good model that they make, they also release some models that are ugly. I guess you just have to choose the right one that calls out to you.
