    Thanks for the memories. I'm an Eagle Scout, probably about the same age as you are, and my Toten Chip card still has all four corners.

    Clear concise explanations, with plenty of visual back-up/examples. You must have been a well liked scoutmaster. I was, sadly, never a scout but knife work [carving, maintenance etc], bushcraft, knot tying etc have always fascinated me. I'm [as you may remember] in the UK but as I've read a lot of Stephen King's depictions of young boys lives back in the pre-tech days of the N.E. United States (incl. guys playing mail-box baseball in a convertible 'naughty') I'm creating in my minds eye an idyl that I never knew. I hope you have many of those warm memories and if we ever end up in a 'pub' you'll have to tell us some stories over a beer.

    Gosh, what a great Mosh! ...have me thinking of my scouting days, which surely had an impact in my professional work path (manage conservation lands). I still keep a basic model Victorinox knife in my truck. ...and I still have two Maglights in service - a mini and a D-cell model. I have newer lights and headlamps that put out some much more, but the Mags still work and I feel some nostalgia related to them. Why not use them, huh? ...and thanks for the handling explanation. I think I mentioned my frustration with this task before in another of your vids. It's nice to have some more information to guide efforts. Thanks you so much for all of your sharing! Swiss army knives all your eggs in one basket, drop the knife in a river or hole and all the functions are gone. Better to have two knives a small multifunction one a proper 6 inch knife in a sheath. I never knew torch batteries gassed, I would blame the batteries for the corrosion not lack of ventilation. Hammer wedges come in sizes and in the UK are slightly different shape as we have two ridges go down them each side. Thanks for the lesson.

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    when i use those big hammers to hand drive nails into concrete the head always comes loose on the job site we try to smack in nails in the head to get true the day but it always fails somedays i just drop it in bucket off water for a while as quick fix but all my boss need do is buy one good one but nowadays they so cheap he just replace each time

      @@ScoutCrafter I had one too when I was in the german Bundeswehr, the original ones were made by Victorinox:
      www.raeer.com/images/full/68070i-BW-Taschenmesser.jpg
      But they've replaced it by this one made by Victorinox:
      webimg.secondhandapp.com/w-i-mgl/5bb623d3992be41b54636c70
      Wenger actually made a collectors edition for an anniversary, it contained ALL tools available in one knife. Totally unusable, but cool for collectors. Too bad it's no longer available:
      www.amazon.de/Wenger-Schweizer-Offiziersmesser-Messer-Schatulle/dp/B000R0JDSI
      I guess the knife is round about 370€ (400 US$).
      The type of batteries you're using matters much more. If you put in zinc-carbon batteries they'll always corrode. The zinc pole is the outer housing, so after some time they'll start to leak. Alkaline batteries won't do this, but they cost more than zinc-carbon.

      The original design and spec for the official Swiss Army Officer’s knife was generated by the Swiss army and then the orders split between Wenger and Victorinox so that if one of them had production problems or was taken over by a foreign company supply by a Swiss owned company could be guaranteed.
      Both companies evolved the designs into their own products but for a long time the army officers model didn’t change as it was a government contract (and we know how easy they change their minds). Given how many modern government contracts fail when placed entirely with one contractor, I guess the Swiss went about this the right way.
      I’ve had the same victorinox since my 11th birthday, still have it still love it.

    Great video! One other thing regarding the flashlights - I was a lifelong Duracell user. However, over the past several years I've noticed that my Duracells were leaking a lot! The last straw was when a brand new pack of Duracells began leaking in the package - the pack was unopened and the expiration date was 2025! Not sure if the manufacturing or composition of the batteries have gone downhill, but it was just a huge disappointment (you can do an online search and see similar experiences). And these were not counterfeits either - I got all my Duracells from Costco or Walmart!
    Have since switched to Energizers, and have been very happy. Eveready also has a specific no-leak warranty on their Energizers (Duracell does not).

The first time, I was the hero of the party because we were all so young and new to the dinner party idea, no one else owned a corkscrew. Didn't much care for the wine but it was one of the first times I was glad of my hayseed upbringing. At that time, appearing sophisticated and cultured was a big thing and hiding my rural roots and uncultured upbringing had become a habit. The cat was out of the bag after that!

      @ScoutCrafter  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jonathan... It seems to happen more when the lights aren't used or left unattended. The AA maglites had very close tolerances so when the batteries would corrode they expanded slightly and would get lodged in the barrel. Some lights are more prone than others for leakage. Thanks!

    On the flashlight topic, after your recommendation I really wanted a Big Larry for in my car, and luckily they are sold over here too. I found out that there is a Big Larry 2 now which boosts 500 lumen in stead of 400 but it also comes in a patriotic version (kind of like your clamp from the clamp challenge), figured that thing has got your name on it! Thanks John, great video!!!

    Hi scout, thanks for a great video, really liked the Ka Bar scout knife,do they still make them ? , my late father in law was a scout leader before ww2, and was presented whith a trophy in the form of a scout leader , by Baden Powell ,at a camp they were at. It's about 10 ins tall ,and depicted a scout leader whith a wide brimmed hat carrying a long staff ,I still have it.The tip on saving Maglights from corrosion is invaluable, is the Maglight whith the corroded batteries beyond hope ,or have you a way of recovering it, I have used boiling water in the past on other torches, never tried it on a Maglight though.maybe it would make an interesting video ,hint,hint,lol. I’ve carried a huntsman over 30 years. Kept in my picket for 20 years as an Infantryman from AK to Iraq, Ranger school to national camp school. Always kept it on a dummy cord of 550 that was attached to my belt. Used it many times to teach scouts how to use a knife. Scales are worn as the emblem was lost long ago. I have to say they hold an edge. Helped skin out a 600lb bull elk in Colorado when I was stationed at Ft Carson. The other guys had to hit the stone many times. That Swiss stayed sharp. Btw, the cork screw was the best rope wrench when a scout tied the wrong knot. The hook was perfect to remove a bolt over-ride on an M16/M4.

    1. To clean corrosion from batteries, in Maglites, use White Vinegar & wipe with a cotton swab. Vinegar works on remotes, etc.
    2. Victorinox has an LED Flashlight. i.e. swisstheme.myshopify.com/products/victorinox-aa-cell-led-flashlight?_pos=1&_sid=6b0a094c7&_ss=r
    3. First Aid Question: Would thread/dental floss & super glue really work to close a cut? You'd wrap the thread/dental floss around the cut, i.e. finger or leg, and apply super glue. Acts like an external suture.

    Does anyone remember Order of the Arrow ceremony? You had to fashion an arrow out of a twig and you must not utter a sound, except in an emergency, for 24 hours. If you were caught talking, a small notch was carved in the arrow around your neck. Too many notches, you were dropped for consideration. Also at ceremonies, you wore a white sash with a red arrow, to show you successfully completed the test. Of course the Order of the Arrow was secret.

    I have the Tinker in my vehicle although I don't carry one. I have 2 or 3 of the old Scout knives also. I don't carry one because I have carried a regular slip joint for many many years. They are easier to clean and dry after cleaning fish or small game. One of the sad things about scouting is all the new rules. To me it went down hill when they had to quit teaching kids to shoot. Scouting leaders teaching kids about firearms and then taking hunter safety would make for more mature shooting youngsters and later adults.
