I agree with you. I'm only 33, but I don't see a point in bringing out old machinery just to idle around. Let it rip! When they sit, it's like throwing an able bodied 40 year old into a retirement home
Never stop doing these, you guys! This is the best!!!! I am a Poulsbo Washington native ,and I love RV. I also love Carson, though he's my favorite dirt bike rider of this Era. All Pacific Northwest!
I love this new format of competition. Fun as Hell to watch. 2 great NW guys getting to this 1 moment of time through different avenues. Great job boys... Respect
Awesome video. I owned a wr500 about 20yrs ago when working at motocross store and it was a beast. I had a few blokes on 450s that didn't know what it was because of air-cooled engine and customisations I'd done. After beating them in drag races they were shocked that 92 had somuch power. I'd put skin graphics, polished motor, swing arm and stripped frame and polished metal then had dark yamaha blue powder coat that was like glass and could see through to polished frame. I'm so angry I didn't keep but sold to get 07 yz125 too start racing. Can't find another cheap one these days. Avagud1 awesome work showing old school weapons. I always found because bike only revs too just over 5000rpm it has so much torque so I found short shift and use torque and it goes better because not digging trenches everywhere.
Wr500s were air cooled snails. They have 43hp. Fully modified one wouldn't beat a stock 450. Maybe a early 2000s 450 with a bad rider on it, but anything 06+ has 50+hp and is lighter, with a better power spread.
@@crazychad2720 on tight tracks such as here in the uk, i see a lot of people racing old 500s against 450s and doing pretty well but as you said they are too outdated to keep up modern ergonomics just work better and that's a good thing
@@crazychad2720that’s a good point. Not sure if the hp number is correct but Cycle World in 93 said in drags against the cr500 they were even. Top end on the Wr 500 / 490 motor was always nuts.
So good and so fun! RV is such a celebrity and good sport 👍 The most logical matchup next would be a 250cc, either 2 or 4stroke. Of course, everyone loves 2stroke 😎
I was so pumped to watch this whole series and especially this video in particular because it was a 500. Pretty bummed out on the track conditions and how dusty it was. They couldn't even ride that bike to half of its potential with all the wheel spin. Water truck must have been broken.
As an old guy 54 yo loved the 125 that bike looks almost identical to my 93 ktm 300 purple rims purple seat you just missed the purple AXO sport outfitt ha ha and your right no one scrubbed on purpose back then . My hands have just gone numb remembering the wr500 . Do more please thumbs up from down under ✌👍
Those bikes were extremely underrated in the day with Yamaha only releasing it in off-road trim, most people never had any clue how good they actually were in mx setup. Being a 500 guy since 12yrs old to date now 50 I surrendered my pride kx500 after setting up and running one of those and have never looked back since.
why wouldn't it hold up? Back in the day the Men did 45min motos on those air cooled 500's. I knew of only a few fellows that roda all 3 classes 125/250/500 at our Canadian provincial races! You had to be tough to do that
Enjoyed the video. I owned and desert raced a '92 WR500 back in the 90s and can say I don't know how these two were able to hang on. Not because of the power, but because the high RPM vibration from that 490 engine is intense, to the point it would make my hands go completely numb in the fast sections. Fortunately that engine has lots of usable low end grunt, at least the vibration, while ever present, was tolerable down there. To be honest, the "setup" of the chassis and engine was a complete shit as delivered. Lots of people hated these bikes back then for good reason. I can't imagine that bike's suspension is stock, as the WR was way too soft. I also can't imagine that motor hasn't been blueprinted/set up, as that bike sounds really crisp and good. The WR was a blubbering mess out of the box. I got a great deal on my brand new WR as nobody wanted these evil things back then. I just love the sound of the old big bore air cooled 2Ts and knew exactly what I was getting into. Did a some basic motor work to my WR, the head was reshaped for better squish, iron liner to aluminum cylinder casting port matching, FMF pipe, dialed in the jetting. Once set up it had a stupid amount of crispy critter power, and I geared it way up (15/42) for desert racing, which lengthened the hit and made it more rideable, plus the top end speed needed for desert racing. It had a lot of suspension work too, with stiffer springs and valving front and rear from Race Tech. 13:14 "she's a big hog, once you get her moving she goes wide, she don't wanna turn sharp". Yep - my WR was a good stable desert bike at speed, but "nimble" is barely a thing at low RPM and simply not a thing once that heavy crank is spun up. Whether or not a KX or CR 500 from that era had more power was irrelevant, they all had unruly stupid power, my WR was definitely in there for sure. My WR proved to be bombproof reliable over many hours of desert racing and trail riding, probably in part because I could never ride it hard enough to actually stress it. 3rd gear was front in the air big hill out in Lucerne/Johnson Valley climbing gear. After many hours 3rd gear had an issue and the cases got split, but it was well due for crank bearings, rod kit and seals by then anyway. On a counterbalanced but still carbureted '18 300 XC with a spring conversion kit in it's air forks these days, have died and gone to two stroke heaven. We old dudes need all the help we can get 😆
What would be cool would be you could get RC and Bubba out there on an early 00s kx125. @@chargernk7748 idk about that, Chad Reed just won an area qualifier for Lorettas this year, and in the recent video he posted JLaw ran off on and Chad and Tate and Dade City. Yup for about 10 laps then the smaller bike start to come back on them because the 500 riders become exhausted.
