This is how to put "Bob and the alien fireflies" onto a cartridge so it works on a real Atari 2600

    Also I suppose the eraser would be expensive and hard to find nowadays, maybe would be possible to make a home made one using uv leds

      It's cheaper and more reliable to buy an eraser. I've heard that the UV supplied from cheap UV LEDs is not within the right range (or bandwidth) to erase ROMs. An older style UV bulb would cost you as much as an eraser, so buying one fit for purpose in this case is the better option. Thanks for watching ;)

    Fantastic video as usual, very informative and interesting. Having an 8kb ROM I suppose you can burn two versions in It, for example ntsc and pal, but need a different PCB to support It like one with a jumper selecting the ROM memory bank to use. Superb video!

      You sure can, all you need is a switch to address pin 12 of the 8Kb ROM which will let you pull it high or low. Then you'll have split the rom into two 4k banks and be able to switch between them.

      Thank you Rudy, it's nice to finally wrap up a project and have something I never in a million years thought I'd possess; a cart with a game I cane up with myself on it. It's really a great feeling. Still plenty of bAtari basic videos on the way though and hopefully a Bob2 game ;)

    Downloaded already mate, keep it up and cheers!

      Great, I hope that you enjoy it. There's a version for the Coco as well if you wanted even more Bob in your life ;)

      Thanks Ken, It seems that it turned out more playable than I had ever hoped. Thanks for all your help and feedback on it. I'll be calling on you in the future for the Bob2 game I've got in the pipeline. Enjoy VCF MW ;)

      Thanks, I'm glad that you found it interesting. I've always found ROM chips and how the code on them works interesting. All in all this was a fun project ;)

    Great Video with a clear explanation of how to use the programmer. I'll have to look on the shared projects section on PCBway and find that PCB so I can make my own physical copy. Did you see that Atari is releasing the 2600 +? Plays 7800 and 2600 games.

      Hi Tron, thanks. I've heard of the new 2600+ and I have to admit that I like the idea of it. I'd probably be in the market for one if I didn't have a 2600 and 7800 already. The only gripe that I have with it is that it's smaller than the original and that they chose the 4 switch model. A full size heavy sixer replica would have been a better choice in my opinion.

    Superb video, love the sandwich converter ❤ must be nice to have an actual physical copy of a game you made

      Man, it's a funny feeling to have a cart with a game you put together yourself on it. 10 year old me would never had believed he'd manage that some day. But that's bAtari basic for you. Making a game for the 2600 is within anyones reach now, what a wonderful thing :)

    That EPROM is so cool too :) BTW Bob showed up! Thanks! I will be making a video on it, looks like he made it through the mail in good shape :) Stay Tuned , and i sure will.:)

    • @8bitsinthebasement
      @8bitsinthebasement  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, I had to spend some time trying to figure out how to rewire a 28 pin EPROM to work in a 24 pin socket, hence the "Fankensandwich". The chips I ordered showed up a few days later though so now the cartridges look a bit more normal ;) Great news that the package got to you. Enjoy Bob buddy. Oh, and try a game or two with a friend, 'cause the two player version is a heck of a lot of fun, even if I do say so myself. Take care buddy.

    Hi Peter. I don't have a 2600 but this game would look great on a CoCo. Hint, Hint

    • @8bitsinthebasement
      @8bitsinthebasement  ปีที่แล้ว

      I hear you Mike. I would really like to convert it over. I've tried a few tests in basic on my Coco 2. It looked great, I had a good screen resolution and the Bob sprite on screen drawn and looking good. The problem is that basic is slow and moving Bob on screen was a real flicker-fest (so not good). That's why I've been looking at learning assembly over the past few weeks but it's a very far cry from bAtari Basic. I'm hoping to do most of it in basic and maybe stitch some assembly code in to speed up the slow parts. But to be honest, me looking at assembly right now is (to use an old expression) like ducks looking at thunder (I'm having a lot of trouble making heads or tails of it). I'm sure that I'll get there in the end, but don't hold your breath :)

      Witchcraft and magic of the blackest kind ;) I'd love to know what a connoisseur of fine vintage gaming such as yourself makes of my hedgehoggy offering to the community. Many thanks for watching my friend ;)

    Hey Peter, it's been fun watching the development of your Bob the Hedgehog game. I would love to contribute to your project if you liked. I have an art background and would love to make a cart label for you, in the old school style :D i don't expect anything in return, it would just be a fun project!

    • @8bitsinthebasement
      @8bitsinthebasement  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Evan, It's been a whole lot of fun making "Bob", even more than I thought possible before I started typing the first lines of code. I'm glad that you enjoyed the journey too ;) Listen, if you would like to contribute a cartridge label for the game I'd be more than willing to take you up on the offer. It could be made available for download along with the game and manual on itch.io. I afraid I have nothing to offer you for it but "fortune and glory kid" minus the fortune of course ;) Thanks very much, I really look forward to seeing what you come up with.

      Glorious! haha Yeah, very happy to contribute. I've always wanted to create something along these lines and should be lots of fun. I'll get in touch.
