I have a smaller version of that cleaner. I cleaned pistons in it with a solution called Greez off. I got it in a parts store. If you find it, it works well. 1 hour for a piston & rod combo and there was not a speck of carbon or anything left on them. Basically ready for rings & installation!
Depending on what I’m doing I will use Simple Green / Super Clean / Evaporust / Dawn and water in my small HF ultrasonic cleaner. It’s like a shop, no matter how big it is you’ll wish it was bigger 😂 I’m as tight as they come, I purchase the bucket of evaporust. It lives up to the hype and is reusable multiple times.
I've been using the dial-type ultrasonic like that for 5yrs now!! I do mostly carburetors and valve-bodies for transmissions and the heat/vibratory action really works!! I use aluminum safe concentrated water-soluble Simple Green (the aircraft type is clear) which is guaranteed not to corrode aluminum if mixed to the proper ratio. I run it on max heat and usually one pass does the trick on the gummiest valve body or carburetor. On Holley carbs, you can remove the soft plugs in the metering blocks and rescue them!! A definite must have for non invasive cleaning!!
You will love that unit, mine is about 5 years old and had a couple hundred carbs through it amongst other parts. I built a box out of MDF to cover it when it's running, it's far less irritating when it's quiet.
I use mine for carbs and small parts. Different cleaning solutions for different metals. I love it. Safe, no mess, no fuss. The ultra sonic cleaner is a godsend.
Love my ultrasonic cleaner. With my car sitting in garage for 6 months I disassemble the carb and give good cleaning before spring. Simple Green is all I use
@@JustMoparJoe yes I do. Not near the garage but believe it’s 1 part SG to 5 parts water. Works like a charm and non toxic. Just wear rubber gloves when pulling parts out. The mixture will dry out your hands
I have the same cleaner, if your cleaning small parts, fill the cleaner with water, put your cleaner in the glass or plastic jar, saves ya on cleaner. I did this with rusty bolts, came out very clean. So far, I like cleaning vinegar or Simple Green
50/50 simple green and water. Been using them for 10 years works great. Pro tip. If doing carbs init leave the heat off. It will heat up with just the sonic part going. Too much heat turns the carbs dark gray.
I use a heavy duty concentrated degreaser from Home Depot. I usually use it 50/50 however you can use it at 100% too. I use mine mostly as a final clean up before I plate or powder coat parts. Evaporust would work but it seems to evaporate quickly especially when heated. If you are purchasing a large ultrasonic cleaner like the 30 liter size make sure it has a drain.
2 gallons of your favorite degreaser that can be used with 2 gallons of Evaporust, 4 gallon of water. I have heard of 50/50 Evaporust and water or 60 cleaner and 40% water. Depends on the part and my cleaning guy is hush on his formula I tried to get it for you but I failed Have a great Sunday today.
hey joe . I have the same one and it works pretty good .some times i put in hot water to speed up the heat process.then i put the small parts in a baggie with a solution .
Been using old school Pine-Sol, get it at Menards for carburetors. Don't have an ultrasonic yet, just mix it with hot water and let um soak a day or two. Actually works pretty well, definitely going to try it when I get an ultrasonic cleaner.
@JustMoparJoe Did a Google search for diy carb cleaner old school Pine-Sol showed up a lot so I tried it. Honestly I miss the carb cleaner from when I was a kid. Sure it ate your skin, but it'd clean a carb in no time flat.
Glad you got one Joe! Wish mine was that big. I agree to experiment with different cleaning solutions. Although the Evaporust is more expensive regarding initial cost, it will last for many cycles. Also, I max out the heat to 99 on mine to break as much contamination loose as possible. Great content buddy!!
I use a 50/50 mix of vinegar and 92% Isopropyl alcohol along with a 1/4 cup of Dawn dishwashing liquid. I preheat the solution on the stove to 100 degrees and pour it into the ultrasonic cleaner. The solution works well and not expensive.
Simple Green “Pro 3 plus” is the best.(Home Depot has it) Rinse aluminum parts in water soon or parts will darken. 2oz per gallon of water is quite strong so 1 bottle goes a long way. Follow directions on the bottle for mixing. Stuff is amazing!
We use something that size in the shop...but we use Simple Green ...you can get it at some of the big box home improvement stores it's reseasonabliy priced and it's bio degradable...which is more important... vinegar and Dawn dish soap are good too...plus it keeps you healthy and one less toxic thing in the work area....good content and thanks.....🔧🔧👍
Hi, I start with boiling water and simple green, I do carbs not greasy parts. I also use mirror x aluminum cleaner to strip dichromate. Greasy parts I boil in a 20gal drum with caustic soda. Just saying.
Thanks Joe - always so much to learn here from you and also from all the responses. I hade used an old crock pot from goodwill just to remove yellow paint from bolts and nuts with similar solution, but didn’t have the ultrasonic feature. With tedious work with a hand wire brush it did get the job done. I do understand the thought of buying so much evaporust. I will say that I have had god success on my mild steel trailer bracket parts, but I never tried more critical car parts that need to be”turn out right” and not damaged. My 1/4” steel brackets are not critical or delicate parts. Was that 80 degrees a Celsius number?
Hi Joe. I would try some dishwasher detergent, the powder type. Generic is ideal. It is a pretty strong base (sodium carbonate) with enzymes that activate above 40 C. This combination is an extremely effective degreaser. I would use about 1 cup powder for 10 L, or 3 cups for a full load of water. Use that as a starter, but don't be afraid to try a bit more. Be careful with aluminum and experiment with a non-critical part before using this solution on something expensive. Heat the water first so the powder dissolves readily. And be careful, this solution would be hard on skin. However, my chemical engineer's instinct tells me that this is probably the most cost-effective degreaser that you will find.
Tide would work well. Fresh out of high school I got a job in a big boiler shop and I would come home after a shift covered in sweat, grease, and metal shavings. I used Tide as my all-purpose cleaner for everything, including skin and hair. Regular shampoo wouldn't touch the dirt in my hair until I had "pre-washed" with a slurry of Tide powder and warm water. Tide and water would be a fine choice. I recommended dishwasher detergent because of its heat-activated enzymes; Tide and other laundry detergents don't have these, and also I think that generic dishwasher powder would be cheaper to use, especially when filling a 30L tank.
LA's Totally Awesome works very well, but the newer formula will darken aluminum. You don't have to get to strong with the concentration of soap. Zep has a powdered detergent that we use at work, it is safe for aluminum as long as the solution is somewhat clean.
You do good videos Joe. I think you are good at Mopars too. I got a race motor that needs checked out. low oil pressure straight from the builder.. If you interested in working on it send me a reply. I'll bring it to ya if we agree on your price.
I'm pretty sure that mixing vinegar, which is acidic, with soap, which is basic, will cancel out the effects of each ingredient. Why don't you try just the vinegar solution I bet that would work a lot better.
I have a product for ya that will blow your mind and it's cheap to buy but ya can't tell no one. It will take rust off in minutes and won't stink like vinegar. Yes it's a acid and blows that evapo rust away. Plus it coats the metal. We dip most everything now.
I have a smaller one to use on my small model airplane engines, They are all aluminum, I used to use LA's totally awesome cleaner and they came out like brand new, but LA's changed their formula, then the aluminum would turn black. I haven't found a suitable replacement. The secret is in the solution.
I think you need to bring the unit up to temperature first Joe, like full temp, then lower the basket full of items into it, and set the timer. Not try to clean stuff while bringing it up to temp. Just my 2c.
