Please note that this is MY property and I can do with it whatever I want. Including breaking it. I have absolutely no use for that thing (as you have seen, in case I ever want surround sound I have a much better Sony receiver that I can use). In fact, the super bright yellow LEDs are going to be more useful to me than the whole system. And as for selling it - the ads on this video here over time are most definitely going to bring in more money than this thing would have.
That's a fancier version of the Sharp stereo system that my dad bought new for $99 in 1998. One strange thing about it is that the radio tuner remains powered on all the time the system is plugged in, even with the power turned "off".
Looked nice till it was taken to bits and how cheap the hifi is. Again though cool you got some speakers they would be handy to use in bedroom or small room.
So was this a dump find? I'm guessing you were after it for parts. I have seen the "Dumb" Play only Cassette deck before, esp. on Sharp units, but NEVER on a full-logic unit like that! (Which takes cheapness to a whole new level)
The turn-around head assembies are total rubbish. Even under ideal conditions without dust etc. they will come out of alignment over time because the turning mechanism gets worn out.
I remember stereos by Sharp, Philips and JVC. My aunt has a JVC system (seperate components, but connected using a proprietary interface) with a load of flashing fancy lights and VFD displays. That system actually appears to be pretty good.
Sharp has always been rather cheap, but in the 70s and 80s their equipment despite the cheapness was still designed to be reliable. I don't think it is these days...
My aunt got this from a friend of hers and gave it to me. I have absolutely no use for something like this, so I just took it apart. The cassette deck in fact is amazingly cheap, that's why I decided to get it on video before taking things apart.
I wonder why they even bothered to put in an actual supply reel in Tape 1, most cheap Walkman-style cassette players (that at least had fast forward) only had a piece of plastic to center the supply reel.
Many Sharp mini systems only play and stop on the playback deck probably all Sharp mini systems use the same cassette deck. At least if the cassette deck is micro switch operated it's surprisingly not too clunky sounding. I have never seen the point in multi disc CD players. I don't think this model has a window in the top of the CD changer which I think is better, my concern with a window in the top is what if the laser is exposed. Separates always were better than all in one systems and always will be.
I don't think that would be worth my time. The amplifier ICs are both very cheap parts with rather bad specs. The Sony receiver has been working fine so far, so no need to take it apart. Therefore, no video.
I like your videos very much Jonas, your the best! I can't believe they took out everything but play and stop, it reminds me of those stupid cheap little Walkman knockoffs that lacked rewind function! I once had one with flashy lights and a cooling fan!! A cooling fan in a crap little stereo, the fan never came on. My litle sony also has a fan that never comes on do they normally never run?
Wow thanks for uploading this video. I remember this Sound system, i bought it back in 1992 and it was awesome, i remember paying less than $150 and the sound was fantastic. Thanks for bringing good memories, i enjoy your videos
Hey, I had a similar one like that. It was my very first stereo system. It didn't have RDS, auto-reverse, the surround sound function, and the demo wasn't as fancy, but it was far off better than what SHARP is manufacturing now for bookshelf units. I didn't have to go through what you went through, it retired (with some help of course!) so I got rid of it because it was occupying too much space in my room. That shit was expensive here (like $300 US) when it first arrived!
okay okay, they just seemed like ok speakers, and on a decent stereo i am sure they sound reasonable if not good, but if you dont want to make a video that is fine.
I have never heard... well, I even have never guessed that there is a stereo system with such a stupid double cassette deck which can only play and stop! And I would never believe that SHARP would produce such a low quality shit under its brand name!! I am shocked...
Well said. Cheap plastic audio equipment need to be taken apart and the parts used for something worthwhile. Nice teardown video. Shame you didn't get to use the big hammer on this one.
I agree the JVC gigatube mini systems were far more repulsive compared to this one, on one model the speakers looked like a bubble machine with those silly tubes on the top. I never understood the appeal of those so called massive power mini systems.
@@LittleRichard1988 the tube was the actual air hole for the speaker. I guess it's placement was the 'Attraction' of it. I mean, they used to sound really good though, but the CD players were pretty crappy, They were ram packed with mechanical issues, and the cassette players were worse off than the CDs too, as they also gave horrendous recordings!
@@TheJaHa5I prefer stereo systems from the late 1980s to mid 1990s, the JVC CA-E23L midi system from around 1990 is actually quite a nice stereo system and even though it's cassette decks are mechanical they do sound OK and that model has dolby. I also prefer completely black stereo systems or that grey/black buttons look which was very typical of the early 90s but I'm not so keen on that fake silver finish which was was popular in the late 90s and early 2000s.
Keep in mind this video is from 2013. Neither the website nor the twitter account listed in the outro exist anymore, and of course, also I have changed. Sadly these days there are too many people on TH-cam making bad videos just to show their face to the world, and likewise, there are too many people watching TH-cam videos just to see the people who made them, and not the actual topic of the video. This is why I don't appear in front of the camera anymore.
@@DrCassette it's a shame that some of these changes have not been positive ones. But you can rest assured that I'm not watching your video's to see your face, I watch them because I like the topics and the way you bring them 👍😃😉
Junk stereo I hate these mini systems, th eonly ones i like are the ones that are rectangular/square CD receivers like the marantz, Pioneer And denon stuff
Yeah kind of boring.. I actually like AV recivers.. but those japanese ones from the 90's.. I don't care about HDMI.. i only use them for the sound.. Right now i don't have one.. i was very close to buy a Technics SA-TX30.. i love that model especially its VU metres.. Those are very rare.. at least here in Sweden.. But anyway next week i'll get another technics AV reciver but the model is quite cheap and not made in japan.. but i won't keep it for ever so it should do its work for a while..
Please note that this is MY property and I can do with it whatever I want. Including breaking it.

"Precision hammer". LOL. Loved that part. It's amazing that someone designed a cassette to play only. I guess anything to save money.
Not to take it apart.A video like you used to do when getting a new component, showing the functions and all that :)
Sharp has had a long tradition of building cheap crap. Some of their poducts are really good, but a lot of it is junk, unfortunately.
I remember stereos by Sharp, Philips and JVC. My aunt has a JVC system (seperate components, but connected using a proprietary interface) with a load of flashing fancy lights and VFD displays. That system actually appears to be pretty good.
DrCassette trust me I have one to and yes it is!!!!!
This video popped up in the sidebar, so I figured I'd watch it again.
I guess Tape 1 can only play "One Direction"
(I know BAD WEASEL!)
Sharp has always been rather cheap, but in the 70s and 80s their equipment despite the cheapness was still designed to be reliable. I don't think it is these days...
Oh i used to love these over the top radios. too bad they are less common now

The heatsink of the rectifier was ridiculous lol.
I am NOT willing to make videos about every single piece of garbage I come across!!!
8:22 I laughed my ass off, haha
This is my new favorite video, The best part is him plugging it in.
I wonder why they even bothered to put in an actual supply reel in Tape 1, most cheap Walkman-style cassette players (that at least had fast forward) only had a piece of plastic to center the supply reel.
+AlmightyMaria PvB
The way they did it most certainly was the cheapest...
Most people used the second deck just to copy a tape so fast forward and rewind wasn't that useful
Be careful it looks pretty sharp it might cut you...

I forgot to mention the only logical reason for such a "dumb" cassette player is for dubbing cassettes, something i have not done in a LONG time.
Yeah, these days the popular systems are the flat units with DVD/BD player that will also connect to the TV and all that...

You could make a small power amp out those parts.
Are we going to see a video on the "new" Sony receiver?Maybe an internal look as well?
Sorry, I don't really have the time for such videos at the moment...
I have never heard... well, I even have never guessed that there is a stereo system with such a stupid double cassette deck which can only play and stop! And I would never believe that SHARP would produce such a low quality shit under its brand name!! I am shocked...
You are rather offensive, don't you think?
I have different model of Sharp surround sound system and 1st cassette deck can only playback too.
Well said. Cheap plastic audio equipment need to be taken apart and the parts used for something worthwhile. Nice teardown video. Shame you didn't get to use the big hammer on this one.
Did the CD part work? if so, that laser pickup will be useful. I always save them as they can be used in keeping decnet players from the dump.
Sharp had some more models with Deck 1 just playback, now FF or rewind.
I did get to use the big hammer, but that will be happening in another video :)

Yeah i do remember those sound systems.. those were quite popular untill the end of the mid 2000's
would be pretty good as a cheap
garage like radio
DrCassette... Don't give up on posting excellent video's on cassette players! Take care and hope things are well.
Love your precision teardown tools for a properly done teardown.
They are quite bed aren't they... It deserved it's fate!
The amp board might be useful...
I didn't try the CD player I'm afraid to say...
I didn't find it, it was given to me :)
will you be doing a video of the speakers soon
I like your "outro" on your videos now.
Nah...., no brand was as annoying as JVC!

Hi Dr.
There's nothing more fun tha taking apart an hi fi.
I remember taking apart a broken awai stereo, I made a right old mess but it was lots of fun

Hahaha
