    I bought an Aiwa NSX V-20 at a yard sale for $5.00 with speakers. It looked pretty good but when I got home the cd player didn't work. Looked like the plastic on the cd unit was warped or melted some. But everything else worked good so I hooked it up to a pair of huge BSR 5 way speakers that a friend gave me and it sounded damn good. Those 15 inchers really put out the bass. Surprised the heck out of me. I set it up in the garage and it shakes the walls pretty good. Can't beat the price either.

    I worked on a portable AIWA combo unit where the CD player didn't work, just like yours. I thought it was a goner, until I checked the power supply. Sure enough, it was low. It was a bad resistor. Once I fixed that, the CD player came back to life. The whole thing sounded good too!

      A new laser unit for this systems now its really cheap, about 7€, with a new one and new belts for cassettes that systems works fine again, the sound for its price is really good, it has powerful bass and good sound...

    Damn, now I go to the garbage collection room of my apartment complex every night to see if there's any audio equipment or cassette tapes I can repair and enjoy !
    Thanks a lot DC.

    Well...a real honest to god tear down! Nothing left of it. Nice job.
    That display reminded me of a Frisky Tom game my friend used to have. It really takes me back to those days.

    I have this exact model, got it for free from my neighbor. Indeed it is cheaply built but I absolutely love it, discs don't work but I mainly use it for it's auxiliary to play records.

    For some reason, the audio on this video is out of phase... I recorded a sample of it into my audio editor and flipped the phase of one of the channels, and then it sounds correct.

      +vwestlife I have a cheap Zotech headphones when they are new they come with the sound like this. Out of phase. I open the left earphone and the wires are soldered in the wrong positions. + with - and - with + :-D I fixed and they are ok now. A brand new headphones with bad soldered wires!

    I have an NSX-SZ42. It is indeed cheap, but for its size it sounds amazing and for an alarm clock to wake me up using a cassette tape (or analogue cable FM radio) it is more than good enough.
    Actually I'd rather spend 30€ on one of these than 200€ on some bluetooth speaker, man I hate these things.
    I actually went through the trouble of disassembling the cassette mechanism and replace all 5 belts with brand new industrial round belts just for them to last nearly forever. I am probably the only person willing to do that to such a cheap old system.
    On the one hand because I always wanted one of these systems when I was a kid and 2ndly because I want to keep this thing my alarm clock

    I had an aiwa system which was almost identical to this one. I salvaged the transformer and made a two-way active system. It's very convenient that it has two dual secondary windings and a single 4.5V winding for logic controllers. Not much power, but great for small speakers.

  • @TheJaHa5
    @TheJaHa5 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I got 2 aiwa systems, same kinda build like that. One that works very sometime-ish, and one that's main purpose is to play tuner and auxiliary. Those stuff sold like freshly baked bread here in Trinidad & Tobago, but people resorted to SONY, JVC and other brands not too long after.....

  • @sdaonline
    @sdaonline 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Some of the Aiwa all in ones are very good, the NSX 77X range for example. The tape decks and CD will break but the sound is usually very nice if you use it as a large amplifier.

    • @garydunn3037
      @garydunn3037 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree, my system is only rated at around 24 watts rms per channel, yet ithas Big Bass Reflex speakers and can certainly kick some sound out withoutany noticeable distortion. And yes, the tape decks have long since give upthe ghost, but the cd, radio and turntable work just fine.

  • @briangiles8979

    Wow! I had a couple of aiwa stereos in Jr. high and high school. One had a 7 disc CD changer and the other had a 3 disc changer and a mini disc player although the volume control on that second one was messed up and was super hard to turn down without the remote. Those things were the stuff back in the day. I have no idea what models they were, but it would be interesting to find a digital user guide somewhere. My homepod is the best sounding speaker I've had since those all-in-one systems in the late 90s. My how far we've come! Thanks for the blast from the past...

    The motor in my all in one system's tape player also has the same exact noise. I had to replace both drive belts on mine. It works well. The old belts were the consistency of bubblegum and one of them was broken... oh, did I mention I got the CD player working by taking the top panel off and cleaning the laser pickup with rubbing alcohol and a q tip, which is a little stick with cotton on the end?

    What size belts would I need for the cassette deck(s) & the CD player?

  • @realgroovy24
    @realgroovy24 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    These Aiwa stereo systems from the late 90's and early 2000's aren't too bad actually (for the price), I've got one from 1999 and keeps working well, I haven't used the CD player all that much though on it, mostly the cassette deck and radio (and yes the belts have had to be replaced) but since that replacement it has been super super reliable.

      @garydunn3037 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Sony Trinitron Yeah, but I live in the UK, and when something breaks down, they simply throw it away for somecheap Chinese rubbish. This is a Quality system that I plan on keeping until something major goes wrong.However stores over here like Tandy or Radio Shack in the US are no longer trading here, so parts are reallythin on the ground. I do have some technical know how, and have fixed many things over the years, its just likeI said, parts are hard to come by these days, especially for older systems like mine. You are obviously from theUS where such stores still exist.

      Gary Dunn I'm actually in New Zealand! I'm just lucky that I know a guy who works at a shop that repairs/sells electronics and also this shop is a electronics drop off point pretty much that he saves some to sell and scraps the rest, I'm also a person who is against the system of a more throwaway society and prefer older higher quality items to be repaired which is good as he managed to find a exact oven as mine for recycling when mine needed a new switch and simmerstat, he also managed to get me a old National branded TV from 1983 which works fine and wouldn't trade it for anything else in the world.

    I have found quite a few of these systems within the last 10yrs or so. What I like about finding these all-in-one units is that they usually have a beefy transformer, big heat sink, small fans, and amplifier modules (ex: stk-xxxx series, National Semiconductor, etc) so you could re-purpose those amps IC's and discrete components and use them in your own powered subwoofer for example.I even found volume potentiometers from Alps, a high quality, multi-turn component (and not $5) Cool video

    That laser dust cover was supposed to close when the optical pickup was positioned in middle because CDs are read from the middle (where the spindle is located) out, so the pickup parks there when not in use. This dust cover seems not to be functioning due to a small snapped piece of plastic. I could not see the piece of plastic in this video, but I do know how it works through looking inside my similar unit.

  • @djijspeakerguy4628
    @djijspeakerguy4628 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The units with the main board on the side in the right side of the unit are better. At least, those have a metal bottom, and the transformer is mounted to it. Mine has the same tape player, (replaced the belts in mine, and it works.) and a slightly different 3cd changer. My CD player works better, but the discs skip and get stuck. The problem in my CD player? Broken gear. I also have the American version with the AM and FM radio, that’s compatible with 120 volt mains. My plastic front panel is just as cheap though, and has a crack in it. It has a similar transistor amplifier Before that, I had an older black unit with the auto reverse tape player. It had an STK-type amplifier circuit from Sanyo. It had electronic tape player controls, powered by solenoids. It had a different display with an EQ. It was the same layout other than that, but had a slightly larger transformer, and the sides and rear were metal. The tape player also worked, but the CD player had the problem your has, it just clicked and the disc did not spin.

    I have the later model with full sized turntable, and everything is working apart from the twin tape decks which began to runslowly, then stopped altogether. I think the drive belt has come of the pulley wheels, but it loos like too much of a job takingthe outer casing off to get to it, and then if it needs new belt what chance do I have of finding a new one. I don't play tapesmuch anymore, and it sounds great from the cd player, so I suppose I'll just leave well alone.

    Kss-213f laser. It is indeed a Sony. This model laser sounded decent but they often stopped working. Kind of like the dying one in my aiwa, which you have to constantly bang on the unit to get it to work on the first song. Somehow, all the other songs play.

    Aiwa used this exact same CD player in all of their models, except the color and some minor arrangements in the back such as the older ones with the led lights and window in back. Only the newer ones have the dust cover on the pickup, other than that the cd changers are the same, although they seem to have made 2 different sizes, this one seems to be the same thing crammed in a smaller space.

Despite its size, it only uses a single 4 inch full range driver each. I upgraded to better speakers later on but the built-in amp was just too weak. I ended up selling the thing cheap and got myself a proper separates.

    pichost.name/images/2015/09/06/_86.jpg
    but the speakers have two little light bars where the 'front surround' letters are on this model on the picture that light up in red and green when surround is turned on. We've had it for a long time now, actually for as long as i remember, even my parents had it before i was born. It's still going on strong except a slight issue with the changer mechanism. It's turned on every day as my father goes to work and then turned off when he leaves.

    Mine has the same ( or similar ) transistors. The amp however is not made entirely of surface mount parts, but a mix of through-hole and surface mount. The better ones use a larger transformer, an STK type amplifier IC, a higher end tape player with 2 flywheels per side and not totally mechanical buttons. The play, ff, and rw, seemed to be driven by a single solenoid. The pause probably did the same thing as the stop button.

    • @DrCassette
      @DrCassette  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are the 2 flywheels per side for the Autoreverse functionality?

    • @djijspeakerguy4628
      @djijspeakerguy4628 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      DrCassette they most likely are. It was an auto reverse deck, and the belts were surprisingly good! The motor was also larger and had some kind of grounding if I remember correctly.

    • @DrCassette
      @DrCassette  5 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @djijspeakerguy4628
      @djijspeakerguy4628 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      DrCassette it was auto reverse. There were indeed 2 flywheels per side. It all makes sense that one flywheel moved in the opposite direction of the other.

      Once it's unplugged from the wall it's not going to shock you anymore. All that could happen is a spark when you, for example with a tool, short out a capacitor that still has a charge in it. You could unplug it from the wall while it's turned on, or wait over night if you want to be extra sure.

    • @LittleRichard1988

      All in one systems are not worth repairing, nor are they really designed to be taken apart. I would throw
      it away and buy some nice seperates by a respected brand like Denon, Onkyo, Pioneer, Marantz or Yamaha.
      With seperate components not only do they sound better but seperate components are easier to fix
      and if one component can't be fixed you don't have to replace the whole system.

    Quite an ugly looking system and the bubblegum blue looks grim ( I hope fake silver and bubblegum
    blue never makes a comeback ). And the cassette deck is no different to that in a generic brand system.
    I think most of these combo systems were only designed with an average lifespan of 5-7 years and
    designed to be chucked as soon as it breaks. This one definitely deserved to be ripped apart. By 2002
    and 2003 most of these all in one systems from that time were garbage to be honest.
