After looking further into this I found that Canva does make a distinction between using elements in a "design or composition" versus trying to sell the element on its own. It seems that if you are to make a design, add text, create a template of your own with some design elements taken from Canva that makes it an altered image which would allow you to use it commercially.
Yes, exactly, I contacted a seller on creative market as they have very similar rules, and they told me that I can re-sell their icons as part of a printable template as it is classed as selling for commercial use. Creating a template for someone to re-print for their even is commercial use and its also classed as adding value for something. I think thats what Canva means as allowed. What is not allowed is to sell their art work on etsy or creative market as your own to other people to also use on their creative work.
I’m very confused with Canva. Why can’t they clearly say what’s allowed and what’s not, why would they hide that information like that, nobody’s going to read that, or understand any of it. Still every youtuber is saying that you can use Canva...
Most places have very hidden Terms of Use. Because if they plainly state everything they probably wouldn't have such a large customer base. You CAN use canva, but you have to ensure you have the right licenses if you're selling digital. A lot of end users utilize canva for social media and things of that nature, not really to sell digital downloads Does that make sense?

@@KatherineOrho If you're using Canva elements to create your designs and do not have the appropriate license to use them and are selling the products digitally then it is a concern yes. If you are, however, creating something to use on your social media it seems to be ok.
As I understood Canva's licence we can use Canva stock for creating templates and resell them. But only through the Canva link, so the costumer gets the link that opens the template in Canva and they can edit it if they want. If you use pro stock in template there will be a watermark on it when a costumer opens it and they need to pay 1€ per pro element to get rid off the watermark.
If you type Sunflower and sell just that, you're not supposed to. If you search a circle and sunflower and you put one over the other, you've altered both and you can sell that. It just confirmed my unease about using Canva media in my low content books. Before I found your video I started looking into free graphic design software.

Very informative video! I’m looking to sell digital downloads on Etsy as well and I was confuse about the usage of Canva elements. so I can use elements to be a part of 1 page (design it up with other things on my own) to make a book cover for sell or picture which is a part of book/ebook, something like that will be ok, right? without people face, logo, place specific.
Hi! So imagine I don't know how to do anything with elements and design myself, do you know any place where I can find elements to create designs to sell downloads on etsy? Thank you so much for your information, your videos teach me a lot!
I am glad the videos are helping you. You can greatly alter graphics to use them by purchasing from other websites but it is very specific what you can and cannot do with them. Depending on what you're trying to create there can be several different options. Feel free to get on the FB group and we can chat about it more there. I am not an artist by any means but I have taught myself how to make graphics on the computer. It doesn't need to be overcomplicated but again entirely depends on what you're selling. Hopefully we can help you out over there!!
Thank you for this video! LOVED your candor. 11:15 so if I take a pro image/clipart, open it in Paint or whatever drawing software, draw a couple lines on it to "modify" it, I can now sell it as a digital file and/or on my POD tshirt/mug etc? I'd love it if you asked Canva this directly! Do you know what happens to your existing designs at the end of the Canva Pro Trial if you cancel the subscription? I'd like to take a month to give another program a try and then possibly come back to Canva if I dont like the other. Will my Pro designs still be there? Canva seems so shady to me!!
You're welcome. Sorry it's taken me a hot minute to reply back (LIFEEEEE) Modification is basically changing a graphic so the original cannot be extracted. Design Bundles actually has some decent examples in their licensing and I will do a short video about that as soon as I can! I believe all of your designs will stay in your account - I have cancelled and renewed several times for creating videos or whatever else and all of my designs have stayed - I believe the Canva Pro items just have a watermark on them after you downgrade. So I suggest before you cancel you download whatever you need to. Highly recommend a program to help instead of relying on Canva
You haven't understood the agreement and overtly analysed it. Canva is free and they want you to use it. If you fill in the colour also in the element, it is modified. What you are reading out, is mostly for a competitor trying to steal or create a setup similar to them. Canva is good to use for downloads !
Appreciate that insight but if you look at the questions I asked in the email it's pretty clear you need to modify the graphics in some way. Most aren't doing that. For me its not worth the risk.
Does this apply only to pictures and elements, or also fonts and colors? I create online lessons on canva, to use in myself as a teacher, and was considering reselling them on etsy.
I believe it also applies to fonts on Canva as well but am not 100% I would have to look into it. I always recommend using fonts you have purchased for commercial use
Okay so if i am understanding you correctly I can use shapes like square, triangle, circle, rectangle etc that may be in the template but may not use anything else of theirs without a license right?
Thank you for this video.. Can you please create a video about protecting your original artwork on Etsy from infringement and copycats..? I don't like someone can steal it and then sell it for profit. :'(
Sadly there are copycats and thieves everywhere. There isn't really a good solution for that when you are posting things online for sale unless you regularly comb the internet for these thieves. I regularly perform searches on Etsy and Google for my best sellers and take them down through there. I can however make some video content on how to address it.
Thank you for the informative video. I still have a question about using Canva for my business Instagram And FB page (social media pages basically). Can I use the elements, gradients, etc. as it is (i.e. without any modification) for my social media posts?
I'm so sad. I thought to look into this before I started creating busy Binders but it slipped my mind overtime. Now after completing so many great resources for kids, I decided to do my research before I launch. Thnx for breaking this down. I'm now on a venture to find commercial use images. Do you have any suggestions?
You can do it! I know it sucks but once you have things that are of your own creation the managing of your business becomes MUCH easier. You really need to read each designers terms of use. You can never go wrong with creating your own elements as well.
How about using these graphics in books? I don’t totally understand the one-time use license. Does that mean I can’t use a graphic in multiple pages of my book, as well as the cover of my book? I would need to use a graphic multiple times, but it’s still for the same project. Canva’s image licensing isn’t very straightforward, and it just feels time-consuming to carefully look at the licensing for each graphic that I want to use. I’m not seeing the point of using Canva Pro if it’s going to be this hard to use their graphics. Without the graphics, I can just use any graphic design software that has even more features than Canva. The only reason I even considered Canva Pro is because of their graphics, but it just feels too complicated to use them. It doesn’t seem worth it.
That is why I tried to educate people. I do believe this video is a little old so I may need to do a refresh. However, now with their partnership with pixabay and pexels it becomes EVEN MORE difficult. (I do need to update badly) If you look at section 5 in their licensing - with a Pro account you can utilize their images in books. (See bullet 6). I hope this helps. Feel free to message me directly. Keep in mind I AM NOT a lawyer therefore I cannot stress getting some help from Canva or an attorney if you are concerned. www.canva.com/policies/content-license-agreement/
@@ShootingStarSVG I have heard that I can use Canva’s Pro images in books, but it’s unclear how we’re allowed to use them in books. For example, I’m not sure exactly what the one-time license allows. I don’t know if that means using a graphic only once without repeating it in any of the other pages in my book, or if I can repeat it in the other pages because it’s still the same project. I also don’t know if I’m allowed to use a graphic in both the interior and the cover, since the cover has to be a separate file from the interior. Also, if I decide to create multiple editions of a book, I wonder if it means that I wouldn’t be allowed to reuse a graphic in future editions of my book. It’s stuff like this that confuses me. I don’t think Canva’s licensing description makes it that clear.

Basically, what Canva is saying is DO NOT PLAGIARIZE. When you are in college, you are constantly told the same thing. If you use someone else's words, you must alter those words to make them your own. Canva is saying the same thing. Canva is still a good platform. Do not run away scared! You'll be fine! This was a great video. Thank you for posting. I respect that you did your research on this. That was cool! Good luck!
Thank you so much and you're right, similar to writing - don't plagiarize. Seems pretty straight forward but you would be surprised on how many people do not understand this
theres a big HUUUUUGE difference. Canva is very specifically a program FOR USING THEIR STUFF. poets dont write poems for you to use unless they are writing poems to specifically put in to public domain for inspiration. Canva stuff is very specifically for people to use.
Could you not add other images on top of original images, to change it? As in add a rose, add another rose to slightly overlap it, and maybe some foliage? Would that not change the original image? That's how I read it.
It's actually very simple. If you selling digital download mean you are reselling the resource and you definitely have no right on that even you purchase the resources at stock image site such as shutterstock. But they let you print in on merchandise cause this will not be reselling the RESOURCE, it's became your product and you are selling the products, people cannot take the "design" and create thier own stuff. And this is because you don't owned the resource, they let you use it, the ownerships belong to the creator. If you want to owned something, create it! Or find someone else create for you (employees or freelancer etc).
What about fonts? surly we can use these? i am fine with creating my own art but what about fonts, would these be classed as "stockmedia" if they were in a design i made with my own images. i see hundreads of designs on Etsy with Canva templates that people are selling so how do these people get around this?
@@paulworster3683 if you are reselling the Font as digital download then no you cannot. Font either be free or commercial use. same goes with stock image you can use it on print on graphic design so on as long as you are not reselling it. So, you can sell prints and merchandise you design using Canva (no for digital download). And about the selling on Etsy thingy I guess it's like a black market. No one ever report those seller so they are safe.

@@ShootingStarSVG thanks for the quick response!!! Wish you all the best
I'm surprised that a video like this really exist it's common sense 🚶🏿♀️🚪
I do research about this topic and you're the only one doing a whole video on that I t is really nice of you because it should be normal for people to know that.
Thank you so much! I try to educate the best I can and will be doing a series on multiple sites soon to help educate the masses.
Thank you for addressing this. Just wonder how many people will comply.
Most do, but some won't. It's unfortunate but that risk is not worth it for me!
You are exactly right. Don't use images or elements for. Canva to sell on Etsy or REDBUBBLE..
so I can use elements to be a part of 1 page (design it up with other things on my own) to make a book cover for sell or picture which is a part of book/ebook, something like that will be ok, right? without people face, logo, place specific.
@@ShootingStarSVG Thanks! I will join the group FB :)
Correct. If you do use their elements you need the appropriate license to resell it digitally and even then it is a little shady.
What about using canva to create e books
Are you using a free or Pro version??
@@ShootingStarSVG I have a Pro version.
@@alishasharma4085 I will double check but I am sure you can use the elements for social media as a pro user without issue!
You. Are. Awesome. And this was soooo helpful! Thank you!
I appreciate this information!!
Glad it was helpful!
Is it ok to use their backgrounds for my projects that I'm selling on Etsy ?
It entirely depends on what type of background you're referring to
Total Crazy, thanks for your investigation. Canva is very unclear!!
You're very welcome. It was super unclear to me until I started digging. Would hate for anyone to get into hot water
Great video! Thank you :)
Thank you!
Brilliant Video. Reallly Helpful!! Just one question, If something is designed in Canva Pro and only canva elements are used, images and everything is mine then is it okay to resale or not?
If the work is created I'm Canva Pro with YOUR OWN elements it's totally fine to do.
Omg! How about business cards, invoice that we make and sell via fiver to a clients? Now I'm shocked!
Be leary
Learn a design program!!
Happy to help where I can!
My customers are saying that they are still seeing watermarks when they purchase my templates
More than likely you are using paid elements and they only have free accounts you need to ensure you are only using free elements
Hope that helps
So, I pretty much have to do most of these designs over again. Great. 😒
I wouldn't say that, just be careful in the future.
Thanks for the info ...my friend made several digital files but has not upload them im glad i found this video ..
Is there any goid hassle free app to make your own designs ?
Inkscape is free depends on what your friend creates
Correct
I only use my own images to make things on Canva.. I only use Canva to create my projects quickly.
Best way to do it if you need access to ready made templates you can quickly manipulate!
@@ShootingStarSVG Yes exactly
💙New subscriber, thanks!
👉🏾Design and Video Request: 👆🏾I would like to see more Canva tutorial how to create and utilize the Elements without worrying about copyright issues. How to go around creating to make them look different that I can use my designs and sell with worries? I just spend money for the yearly Pro membership to only find out so many Elements have copyright issues.
You would have to create your own elements. I have a bunch of videos on how to achieve this on my channel
THIS GIVE ME CLEAR ACTION NOT TO TAKE THE SUBSCRIPTION ....I WAS ABOUT TO
There are some perks to the pro subscription but if you're looking to generate income on your digital items it is best to do it on your own :)
Baby I understand where you're coming from, but I'm pretty sure you are overthinking this. But I can appreciate your passion for following rules. I really would like people who suck at designing to stay the f- out of our space with their canva templates. So I hope you scared a bunch of people away. I just want you to know its not that serious cuz you started to sound a little frantic. And trust me, Canva knows its not that deep, that's why you got those responses lol . The people at Canva are still probably talking about the one person who read their licensing agreement and wrote in with legal questions 😸👍😍 love u chick
Thank you! It can be frustrating for sure but I think the bigger picture is people do not educate themselves before selling and THAT is the big issue. Appreciate your support
