    There's something weirdly poetic about a show depicting the deep emotional trauma of adolescent girls, and what causes them to commit harm against themselves having the Middle-aged male overseers that raised, demonized, and sexualized a girl of their own scientific creation written by a Middle-aged man go "huh guess girls just emotional or somethn"

      This is the perfect comment. Ep 11 was a really beautiful and simultaenously harrowing story for me because it's almost like the in-show metaphor on how WEP lost its grip on taking its own characters as whole, fully-fleshed out people

    Wonder Egg's script writer is also known for taking good concepts and launching them off a cliff. There's rumors that he butted heads with the director a lot about the directions they wanted to take the show, hence why it feels like two shows poorly mushed together.
    Also feels weird that this show about the traumas of teenage girls is written by a middle aged dude, and you can definitely see his ignorance rear its ugly head time and again through the show.

      I don't think they butted heads. The writer would then have to involve himself. he just trow the scripts at them.

    It really was a beautiful and unique story even with its horribly rushed ending. I watched all but the last episode, after reading a comment thread about the 13th episode. I'm hoping the creators can someday go back and finish this story.

    In a similar way to how you described relating to Ai's mental space being presented through random photos and recordings from her walks, I found the final ep to reflect how hard is it to get over something and walk away - how a support group you found can become a weight of its own, and how instead of helping you get over a hangup, it wraps you into a whole another mess that you never signed up for. About deciding what and who to trust, about warning signals, about throwing yourself into a neverending whirlpool of danger consuming your whole life, and deciding when you have to cut yourself off even when it's emotionally exhausting and it feels shitty to do. About how what we dreamed of can turn out to be entirely hollow, about how easily people can drift apart, but also how you can get addicted to the thrill to the point that your life just feels pointless without it. I know saying that something is purposely unfulfilling sounds like a copout, like "oh it's just PRETENDING to be bad". But on other hand, assuming that you see how this resolution may have been intentional and that this feeling of frustration and emptiness was what they were going for - how many stories actually have balls to commit to that, and is that something inherently wrong? For me the metatext was always the most important side of this story and as such I felt like the show was throwing hints quite early that I shouldn't grow too attached to the plot or lore because I won't find satisfying answers in them, with the subtext here being that with traumatic events like this we might look for some sort of answer and a neat narrative wrap, but most of the time we'll eventually have to accept that there was no meaning in this and there is no plot progression to be had, we just have to work through it and move on. I think this story could've ended with a more conventional ending and still be as good, and I bet more people would've liked it that way, but personally I genuinely liked this ending and I'm very happy with how the show turned out overall.

    The science fiction was the misstep to me. Keep it a nightmarish fantasy and psychological thriller action. It is still worth a eatch, maybe an incomplete one up to ep 12.

    I had a wish for a while that the show would just reboot from either episode 4 or episode 10. The first few episodes of this series were one of the few pieces of art that let me feel that ethereal, undiluted emotion.

    I take cold comfort in having called it perfectly and quit the show right as it started going downhill. Also, THEY MADE IT ABOUT A FALSE RAPE ACCUSATION??? God, that's exactly what I would expect from the crew that brought us "girls commit suicide because they're just more emotional than boys :3"

    • @TexasCat99
      @TexasCat99 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Spoiler - It's worse.
      Spoiler
      How her friend died by "accident" = badly done.
      1 - she "faked" the R because the teacher rejected her. Okay, I've seen odd stuff from rejection. But... uh, Ai saw them making out?
      2 - The teacher knew about her threat - but did nothing. If he was innocent, then he'd get the staff involved ASAP.
      3 - The roof had dozens of kids up there, they saw her on the other side of the fence. BUT none of them see her slip and fall.
      4 - Ai's teacher getting into a relationship with Ai's mom = wrong on so many levels. Like a groomer getting into a relationship to be close to her.
      Two recaps for a "13 episode" series? Who does that? Take out the re-caps and it's 12 episodes. They should of wrapped it up, the mess it was = why would they think there would be a 2nd season? The B-Story was really its own thing and didn't clear up anything.
      It's really sad, because the first 6~7 episodes are quite good.

    wonder egg struck me as (in addition to "just kind of a mess") being very voyeuristic, but I do also find it really interesting to hear about something as specific as "wandering around your neighborhood taking things in" resonating in such a personal way with someone. since it's very much not for me on a personal or aesthetic level, AND is very easy to find fault with artistically, I appreciate you for getting into its appeal a little bit (while still acknowledging the mess). really insightful!

    That's basically what I heard about this show. I've seen a few scenes of Ai in what scanned to me as her trying desperately to be proud of herself for the baby steps she could manage towards being a human, and it was REALLY powerful, but I'd also heard it flops real bad. I wanted the cuts I had seen to be good so badly, I was really disappointed

    Always love seeing a new video from you! Yeah, Wonder Egg Priority... my feelings on the show after it wrapped up are... complicated, to say the least. So much that it did well combined with so much it was crushed under the weight of it's own ambitions. But there were elements of the show that truly touched me and I love how it dealt with subjects so much media usually shies away from. While the show didn't stick the landing in the least (it more fell flat on its face) I would never regret watching it.

    This is one of my favourite animes. I honestly didn’t even hate the other subplot. I was watching for the characters, but I thought that some of the lore was pretty interesting, and it functioned as an interesting threat. I wish they could’ve just taken another 12 episodes to finish it all. I really feel like the ending could’ve been something real if they just took their time.

    I think the fact that there is a post-show drama cd where all the girls are friends again and they are going to Ai's mom's wedding is crazy as hell because I want to know how they got there.
    That's what important to me. what the hell. they flubbed so much between adding sci-fi stuff and weird collusion and all of the special, but if they retconned episode 13 I think they could bring it home, and make it work... but instead this is what we have, and we will never know how it gets there.
    incredibly frustrating, i think about this show an awful lot. Even the idea that a revived person comes from another reality is a bit... strange? even if they're newly like hostile, that's cool, but the implication that they were plucked from another universe is kinda weird to me. the magic of the show is kind of lost.
    Obviously the false rape accusation suicide accident is NUTS, it could've easily been literally anything, even if it was just actually something else unrelated to the teacher to have it not make the drama CD weird. I don't know, that whole idea needs to be gotten rid of it totally tramples on so much of the previous story.
    EDIT: the drama cd is on volume 3 of the blu-ray, and there's a translated version here on youtube. it's abou 20 minutes long.

    I still love Wonder Egg Priority (the main tv anime). While the exterior conflict was left unresolved, I felt that Ai's internal conflict was resolved and that's enough for me. A lot of anime end with unresolved plots so I really don't mind that much. I do hate the special though, it retcons and regresses a lot of elements, from plot to characters. But I'm fine to just ignore the special. I feel satisfied with the tv anime and I'd give it a solid 8/10

    • @spitfiremase
      @spitfiremase หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree with this. i think episodes 9 and 11 are a bit of a mess, but episodes 10 and 12 are mostly quite good. I have problems with 12, but overall it does work to resolve Ai's internal conflict, which would embolden her to fight to save her friends in a better version of the special. Even never hearing the teacher's answer - that's enough for me, i think.
      But between episode 11 and the special, it's just... dire. i don't even really mind 11 as like it's own little story, it just kind of used up time that the show didn't have.

    • @TexasCat99
      @TexasCat99 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I felt that it was 100% that the teacher was lying to Ai. In the dreamland, the teacher *IS* a sexual predator. Sure, it's an alternative universe, but still - her teacher is still creepy in every scene. The teacher let her friend die to cover for the affair. "I was too late to save her. There was nothing going on between us" = uh, no. He didn't report her to the school staff? Ai didn't know "how she died", geez, there were about dozen kids on the roof, talking or listening to her friend before she "fell". They didn't see her "Fall", so maybe she did jump. They all happened to look away the moment she "slipped". Those 12 kids would have told everyone what happened, Ai would have heard it too. Her friend was also secretive about the teacher.
      Those last eps were a mess. They should have spent a few more days writing the last 3 episodes (10~12, don't count the recap ep). It wouldn't not have taken much effort. The whole story about the AI/Bot was actually boring and senseless. They could of had a create series on their hand. It's remembered for crashing and burning. First 6 eps = 10. Last 3 eps = 2.

    Ehh, I don't necessarily agree. The SciFi elements in the story seem to have been a deliberate choice. Honestly, they could have worked, but I think it just comes down to bad writing. Unfortunately, bad writing exists in both brutal and optimal working conditions.
